How to Start Dropshipping

TL;DR

  • Begin with a Shopify account, choose a niche, and find reliable suppliers.
  • Budget around $300-500 for ads or start organically with social media.
  • Learn business fundamentals and marketing strategies.

Setting Up Your Store

The first step in starting a dropshipping business is setting up your online store. Most users recommend using Shopify due to its ease of use and popularity among dropshippers [1:1][3:1]. You'll need a domain name, which typically costs around $10-15 per year [1:3]. It's important to pick a niche that has demand but isn't overly saturated [1:1][4:1].

Finding Reliable Suppliers

Choosing the right supplier is crucial for ensuring product quality and timely delivery. Some recommended platforms for finding suppliers include CJ Dropshipping and AutoDS [1:4]. Testing suppliers with small orders can help you gauge their reliability before scaling up [5:1][5:2].

Marketing and Advertising

Marketing is key to attracting customers to your store. You can start by running paid ads on platforms like Meta and TikTok, or opt for organic growth through social media channels such as Instagram Reels and TikTok [1:1][5:2]. Learning about advertising strategies and customer attraction is essential, with resources available on YouTube from creators like Marcus Lam [3:4][5:4].

Learning Resources

To get a comprehensive understanding of dropshipping, many users suggest watching free content on YouTube [4:4][5:4]. There are also detailed guides and blueprints available online, such as those shared by experienced dropshippers [2:1][3:2]. However, be cautious of courses that may not provide genuine value [2:2].

Common Mistakes and Pitfalls

Starting small and focusing on one product category can help you learn the ropes without overwhelming yourself [5:2]. Avoid jumping onto trendy products too quickly, as they might not have sustainable demand [5:2]. Additionally, it's important to test your suppliers and have a backup plan in case things don't go as expected [5:1][5:3].

By following these steps and leveraging available resources, you can set a solid foundation for your dropshipping business.

yo you’re not alone lol — literally everyone feels clueless at the start, so no stress. dropshipping sounds wild complicated at first but it’s really just learning a few key things and stacking wins over time.

to start, here’s what you actually need:

  • a Shopify account (basic plan is like $39/month)
  • domain name (around $10–15/yr)
  • a product to sell (start with 1–2 max, don’t overthink it)
  • some kinda traffic plan — either organic (TikTok, Insta Reels) or paid ads (Meta/TikTok ads)

budget-wise, you can get goin with $300–500 if you’re smart about it and maybe lean into organic content to save ad spend at first. if you go with paid ads, aim for $20–$50/day test budget.

and if the whole store setup thing stresses you out, you can look into done-for-you stores from places like ecomency.com .. helps skip a lotta techy stuff and you can just focus on the product and marketing.

biggest tip tho: don’t try to learn everything at once. just learn > test > repeat. first sale hits diff fr. keep pushing 💪

Starting dropshipping isn’t as complicated as people make it seem, but it’s also not as easy as "just set up a store and make money." The key is learning how to sell, not just finding products. Start by picking a niche—something with demand but not overly saturated. Budget-wise, you’ll need at least $300-500 for testing ads, but if you go the organic route (TikTok, IG Reels), you can get started for less.

Set up a Shopify store, find reliable suppliers (not just AliExpress), and focus on good marketing and branding. Platforms like Why Unified can handle fulfillment if you want an automated approach, but if you're bootstrapping, focus on testing and learning before scaling.

I’ve started 5 different dropshipping businesses and only 2 are successful. They still get sales without running any ads. I have tried building my own stores with a million products and failed. An agency built me a niche specific store for like $50 and it took off. Now I have another one with another niche. I finally figured the mistakes I made. Give these guys a try (this is not an ad). DM me if you’re interested

The fact that you’re asking ‘where to start’ shows a lack of research and care factor on your end.

  1. To be successful in business you need to be self-motivated. No one is going to wipe your arse for you. Figure shit out and get it done.

  2. Set an objective.

  3. Avoid dropbro guru douches.

  4. Study some of your favourite businesses and understand how they started and what made them successful.

  5. Understand business fundamentals.

  6. Read some books—7 Powers, How Brands Grow…

  7. Take your time.

  8. Don’t jump on the low-quality ‘select a winning product, spin up a crappy website’ bandwagon as you’ll fail.

  9. There needs to be a ‘why’ behind what you do and you need to deliver something compelling and competitive to the market or you’ll be quickly chewed up and spat out.

  10. If you personality don’t bring anything to the table you’ll up your chances of failure. Work out what your superpower is and leverage it. Can’t think of some? Why get into business?

  11. The more shortcuts you take, the less self-motivation you possess, the more cheap tactical materials you try to learn from—the lower the rate of success.

I can save you time and money and tell you how it will end for you.

You will spend a load of time designing your store, you’ll spend money on ads and will make no sales. You’ll call e-commerce a scam. The end.

best place to start is free content on youtube, but stick to people who actually show real testing and numbers. marcus lam is solid if you want step by step breakdowns especially on ads and creatives. for learning customer attraction, watch how he tests angles and hooks instead of just copying viral tiktoks. once you get the basics you’ll learn faster by launching small tests yourself instead of only watching videos

You attract customers by running paid traffic to one winning product offer and the creatives only work when they highlight a single clear hook tied to that offer.

Back up a bit, learn the basics of business and as part of that you’ll learn the ins and outs of advertising.

Careful about searching too broad on YT too as you’ll fall into the dropshipping course lead magnet cesspit.

Have a read of the post pinned to my profile to hopefully head in the right direction.

The best way to start is to just START. There is a multitude of people on Reddit in general asking questions that can easily be solved with research and analysis of the topic they wish to learn. The internet itself is a monumental library of knowledge and information where you can learn literally anything for free. If you want to know where to start do your research by watching YouTube videos, reading articles, or browsing this sub and go off information that has already been validated to work for others and implement it yourself and fail to learn. Learning anything in this world is going to introduce failure to push forward and show you what works and what doesn’t. And the best way to start is to START

First you need to decide on the niche for you to start drop-shipping. After that, you need to set up your Shopify store. The last thing is to find a supplier of your dropshipping products. Let’s talk about each step in details.

Start small, like really small, to learn the ropes. Focus on one product category to get the hang of sourcing and shipping. Avoid jumping onto trendy products too quickly; they'll burn you if you don't understand the demand cycle. Also, watch out for supplier reliability—test orders are your friend! For marketing, consider diving into social media ads; they're gold for targeting specific niches. Don't forget to stalk the competition's social media and learn from their mistakes too. Backup plan? Always!

Man, it’s like you crawled straight into my mind. Back in my newbie dropshipping days, I thought selling fidget spinners would make me rich overnight. Spoiler alert: it didn’t. Starting small is key, like testing out a pet rock store or something. Supplier hiccups made me feel like I needed a stress ball ten times a day, so be sure to test them with a small order. Social media ads are my secret weapon too. Plus, using tools like Semrush or BuzzSumo to spy on competitors can save you tons of headaches. Pulse for Reddit also makes creeping on competitors super easy, just sayin'. Happy shipping, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Ive been dropshipping and reselling on Amazon & Ebay for about 200 days now. Its going well.

Using tools & resources are not gonna be helpful to identify niches. You really gotta think outside the box. Dropshipping isnt new, its saturated, but there are niches and products still able to be found.

I spent a couple of years doing other projects to learn how to get products cheaper. I cannot share what I do because its a cut-throat world out there and anyone can snipe your listings. The "going well" could easily collapse in a day and that is a risk I am trying to mitigate.

The biggest advice id give, is dont get dollar signs in your eyes when you see ROI % on products.
Profit margins are more than just your Product Cost - Platform Fees - Tax.

You have to account for returns, fraudulent refunds, cases and time it takes you.

I always ensure my time is fairly compensated and this is profitable.

Shopify is the user friendly platforms, start with shopify store. Find less competitive niches which product in demanding. Make good creatives which can attract customers to dive into your store to buy item. Also put such pricing which can make you some profits and people can buy it easily.

The first thing you would want to do is determine the products you want to sell and your target market.

What do you want to sell? Is there a demand for the product? Will it be easy to market or advertise? Will the product be profitable?

You can really get a lot of ideas at https://www.shopify.com/blog/trending-products and then you can check Google trends and see if the product is still trending online at https://trends.google.com/trends/

Then look for the most reliable supplier, this is also very crucial. You can check them out on thislink , hope this helps with your research.

They have suppliers located in different parts of the world, including Europe, the USA as well as Asia, they source and produce their own products and these suppliers will ship from the closest warehouse to the recipient' to ensure faster shipping.

They also offer "Premium products" which are curated lists of high-quality products, sourced from the best suppliers on their platform. These Premium products are tagged as "best sellers" and "highly discounted items".

Don't forget to also Market your store (Google/Facebook/Instagram Ads), and watch youtube tutorials (Yes they do help!)

Never stop learning , don't give up and be patient and your sales will follow through as your end result!

Good luck with the store! Happy Holidays!

Focus on customers' and competitors' research. Most videos in YouTube may stress the importance of ads and digital marketing, but how can it work if you are not aware of the market trendings and get familiar with targeted customers? Before starting your own store, being sure about who is your customers group, including their age, gender, education and other identities signals. Besides, knowing your competitors about their website theme, pricing strategies and logo are also important. In doing this, you can differentiate your store from others and being overweight. Although it seems assignment-loaded, you can deal with them under the help of tools like SimplyTrends, Similarweb, shophunter and so on.

How to get started with dropshipping [Tutorial]

Posted by Max-20 · in r/startdropshipping · 6 years ago

Dropshipping is an extremely popular business model for new entrepreneurs. Since you don’t need to stock or handle the items you are selling, it’s possible to start a drop shipping business with limited funds.

An ecommerce website that operates a drop shipping model purchases the items it sells from a third-party supplier or manufacturer, who then fulfills the order. This not only cuts operational costs, but it also frees up your time to focus all of your efforts on customer acquisition.

1. Select a niche.

The niche you select needs to be laser-focused and something you are genuinely interested in. A product range that isn’t focused will be difficult to market. For product research you can use Dropshipscan.com which sorts products from Aliexpress by order growth over the last several weeks. It also shows you the profit margins you can expect by searching for the products on big ecommerce platforms and calculating the average resale price.

If you aren’t passionate about the niche you select, you will be more apt to becoming discouraged, because it takes a lot of work to successfully scale a drop shipping business. Here are some points to consider when selecting your niche:

  • Seek attractive profits. When you are running a drop shipping business model, your focus is on marketing and customer acquisition, so the amount of work required to sell a $20 item is essentially the same as it would be to sell a $1,500 item. Select a niche with higher-priced products.
  • Low shipping costs are very important. Even though your supplier or manufacturer will handle the shipping, if the cost is too high, it will act as customer repellant. Find something that is inexpensive to ship, as this also gives you the option of offering free shipping to your customers and absorbing that cost as a business expense in order to attract more sales.
  • Make sure your product appeals to impulse buyers with disposable income. When you are focused on driving traffic to your website, you want to experience the highest conversion rate possible because most visitors will never return. The products you are selling should trigger impulse buys and appeal to those with the financial ability to make a purchase on the spot.

2. Perform competition research.

Remember, you will be competing with other drop shipping operations as well as retail giants such as Walmart and Amazon. This is where a lot of potential drop shippers go wrong, because they look for a product that has little to no competition. That’s a sign there isn’t demand for that particular product.

There are many reasons why a product might not have a lot of competition, including high shipping costs, supplier and manufacturing issues or poor profit margins. Look for products that have competition, as it’s a sign that there is a high demand and the business model is sustainable.

3. Secure a supplier.

Partnering with the wrong supplier can ruin your business, so it’s important that you don’t rush this step. Conduct proper due diligence. Most drop shipping suppliers are located overseas, making communication extremely important, both in terms of response speed and the ability to understand each other. If you are not 100 percent confident in the communication abilities of a potential supplier, move on and continue your search.

Alibaba has become one of the largest online resources to identify and communicate with potential manufacturers and suppliers. Make sure to ask a lot of questions and learn what their production capabilities are in the event that your business grows exponentially. You want to be certain they have the ability to scale with you.

4. Build your ecommerce website.

The fastest way to launch a website that supports a drop shipping business model is to use a simple ecommerce platform such as Shopify. You don’t need a tech background to get up and running, and it has plenty of apps to help increase sales.

Even if you have a sizable budget that would allow you to hire a web design and development company to create a custom solution, it’s a much wiser move to use one of the plug-and-play options, especially in the beginning. Once you are established and the revenue is coming in, then you can explore additional website customization.

With Dropshipscan.com you can export the products you found and import them directly to Woocommerce or Shopify with a single click.

5. Create a customer acquisition plan.

Having a great product and a website is great, but without customers looking to buy, you don’t have a business. There are several ways to attract potential customers, but the most effective option is to start a Facebook ad campaign.

This allows you to generate sales and revenue right from the start, which can contribute to quick scaling. Facebook allows you to place your offer directly in front of a highly targeted audience. This gives you the ability to compete with the largest brands and retailers immediately.

You also have to think long term, so search engine optimization and email marketing should also be a focus. Collect emails from the start and set up automated email sequences that offer discounts and special offers. It’s an easy way to leverage your existing customer base and generate revenue without additional advertising and marketing spend.

To create ads you can use the inbuilt ad designer of Dropshipscan.com to place your logo, add a text, emojis or filters. This increases the attention your ad will get as well as your CTR rate and lowers the cost per sale.

6. Analyze and optimize.

You need to track all of the data and metrics available to grow your business. This includes Google Analytics traffic and Facebook conversion pixel data, if that is your main customer acquisition channel. When you are able to track every single conversion -- to know where the customer originated from and what path they took on your website that eventually led to a sale -- it enables you to scale what works and eliminate what doesn’t.

You will never have a set-and-forget advertising or marketing solution. You need to constantly test new opportunities and fine-tune current campaigns, which allows you to know when to optimize or shift campaign spend.

Choosing the right trending product is the first key. Design your store in an eye catchy way too and be great with your ads. You'll get it right

  • Understand the basics, like concept, workflow, risks, and what to prepare before starting.
  • Have a plan, and backup plans.
  • Have a budget, and make sure you stick with it.
  • Be patient, as things take time.
  • Be prepared for frustrations.
  • Don't complicate everything. Often, things are just what you do daily, e.g. communication.
  • Take chances at times, but be sensible.
  • Always review your store as a customer.

How to start?

Posted by Emergency_Basis1905 · in r/dropshipping · 1 month ago

Hi everyone, is there any guide or can you teach me how to start dropshipping?

I am from the Philippines and wanting some extra income as relying on wage is not enough for a father of 2.

If there's some kind hearted person who can teach how to start.

Dropshipping isnt the only way to make money online. here are some other options you can consider that might be easier:

– Info products like a checklist of guide. It's low cost and not too hard to sell.

– Micro-niche blog on your niche/area of expertise. No cost to start but need good writing skills and knowledge.

-Online tutoring- you could teach Philippines english or vice versa if you're fluent on a platform like preply

If you want other ideas and ways to start check my profile :). Hope this helped

Bro starting dropshipping from the Philippines is doable but you gotta treat it like a real business not just a side hustle you hope works out First pick a niche and dont just grab random products choose something you either know about or see strong demand for Then set up a Shopify or WooCommerce store but keep it clean and focused so you dont overwhelm buyers For suppliers you can go with AliExpress CJdropshipping or even local suppliers for faster shipping in PH Learn Facebook Ads or TikTok Ads because marketing is where you actually make sales not just listing products Also budget at least a few thousand pesos for ads and testing it is not free money And seriously watch Marcus Lam on YouTube his step by step beginner guides cover exactly how to pick products set up your store and run ads without burning your wallet.

Key Considerations for Starting Dropshipping

  1. Choose a Niche:

    • Focus on a specific market that interests you and has demand. Research trends and competition to find a profitable niche.
  2. Select Reliable Suppliers:

    • Use platforms like AliExpress, Oberlo, or SaleHoo to find trustworthy suppliers. Ensure they have good reviews and reliable shipping times.
  3. Set Up an Online Store:

    • Use e-commerce platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce to create your online store. Choose a user-friendly design and optimize for mobile.
  4. Market Your Store:

    • Utilize social media marketing, SEO, and paid ads (like Google Ads or Facebook Ads) to drive traffic to your store. Consider influencer marketing for wider reach.
  5. Manage Customer Service:

    • Be prepared to handle customer inquiries, returns, and complaints. Good customer service can lead to repeat business and positive reviews.
  6. Analyze and Optimize:

    • Use analytics tools to track your sales, traffic, and customer behavior. Adjust your marketing strategies and product offerings based on data insights.

Recommendation: Start with a small product range to test the market before expanding. This helps you manage inventory and understand customer preferences without overwhelming yourself. Additionally, consider using tools like Oberlo for Shopify to simplify the product import and order fulfillment process.
