How to Correctly Use a Pimple Patch

TL;DR

  • Apply pimple patches on clean, dry skin.
  • They work best on pimples with heads or after popping.
  • Replace patches regularly until the area heals.

Application Method

Pimple patches are most effective when applied to clean and dry skin. It's important to cleanse your face before applying the patch to ensure that no dirt or oil interferes with its adhesion [2:2][4:1]. Some users recommend using disposable lancets to gently puncture the pimple, which allows the hydrocolloid patch to absorb fluids more effectively [5:1].

Effectiveness on Different Types of Pimples

Hydrocolloid patches are designed to absorb fluid from pimples, making them particularly effective for pimples that have come to a head [3:5], [5:5]. For deeper cystic pimples, microdart patches can be used to help bring them to a head [5:9]. However, it's generally advised not to lance or pop a pimple unless it has developed a visible head [5:7].

Healing Process

Once applied, pimple patches help keep the area moist and protected from bacteria, which aids in faster healing and reduces the risk of scarring [4:6]. Users often replace patches every 6-8 hours or as needed until the pimple is fully drained and healed [4:2], [2:12]. If the patch pulls off some skin upon removal, it may be helpful to apply a new patch immediately after cleansing to prevent reopening the wound [4:3].

Avoiding Scarring

To minimize scarring, avoid picking at the pimple and ensure it remains covered with a patch until healed [5:5]. Using patches infused with ingredients like BHA or AHA can also aid in healing [4:10]. Additionally, keeping the area clean and moisturized helps prevent recurrence and scarring [4:6].

Product Recommendations

Popular brands mentioned include COSRX and Nexcare, which offer effective hydrocolloid patches [3:2], [4:8]. For deeper blemishes, Peach Slices and Rael Beauty microdart patches are recommended [5:10].

Are you supposed to pop the pimple and clean it before putting a pimple patcher on or do you put the patche on an unpopped pimple?

I put the pimple patch on first then do my night time skin care around it. Otherwise it comes off.

Pimple patches don’t fix acne, but they do help wounds heal more quickly. They also help keep people from picking them!

Oftentimes people think the white gunk that formed is something that was pulled out of the clogged poor. While you may find that, the white gunk is just a reaction from the air hitting the Hydrocolloid (what most pimple patches contain to treat the acne).

Hydrocolloids are usually used for burns and bedsores, but now they're popular with acne.

Since these patches act like little bandages that keep foreign bacteria out and moisture in, they will help heal acne once you've popped it.

Personally I sometimes put them on blind pimples just so I won't pick!

once theres a pimple head i just put one on in the morning after cleansing and take it off in the night. the patch should pull all the gunk out and after cleansing i just put another patch on to prevent infection

From what I can tell, people will do both. Personally, I pop the pimple with an extractor and then put the patch on overnight. I've never had any luck putting it on before popping it.

When you pop the pimple there tends to be a clear liquid that comes out after the pus which never seems to end, do you just clean the majority of it and put a patch on it?

thespianomaly · 2 years ago

I try to expel a good amount, dab it with some isopropyl to clean it and then use a patch. You’ll feel more liquid “bubble” up under the patch but it gets absorbed.

I love these things because I always get a flat, inoffensive scab that heals quickly.

3 upvotes on reddit
Creeeeeesta · 2 years ago

Yeah, I just dab it once and put the patch on. If the patch gets "full," I replace it. I use the big hydrocolloid bandages (Band-Aid Hydro Seal) and cut them to size. They stick better for me (I have hormonal acne, so whatever I need to actually pop is usually pretty large) and tend to last longer without getting too full and falling off.

I actually pop the pimple in-between my face washes (because at the end of at day I use Vanicream gentle foaming cleanser first and then follow up with Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask). Do my after care and then slap the patch on once my moisturizer soaks in.

I’ve never successfully popped a pimple with an extractor, is there something important I’m missing? I either press too hard or not enough, but regardless it always looks worse after rather than if I would have just left it alone. Do you have any tips?

1 upvotes on reddit
Creeeeeesta · 2 years ago

Before I got my acne more under control, I needed to actually lance the big ones first (sterile technique, aiming for the pore, shouldn't need to force the lance in or have very much pain) and then press directly on top of the puncture with the extractor. One good press, maximum two presses with a more gentle second attempt. If nothing substantial comes out, quit and leave it alone; put a patch on it, reassess it the next day. Now, I only use extractor for very small white heads and anything that comes to a head. No head, no extractor.

I kind of had to trial and error (my poor face 😫) before I got a good feel for pimples that were extractor worthy and those that will resolve on their own/look way worse if I tried to extract them. And I never use the 'blackhead' side, that thing tears my poor paper thin tretinoin skin.

Extractors aren’t always the best tool. Most esthetician’s prefer fingers wrapped in tissues + gloves or 2 qtips.

Unless you’re lancing, don’t pop until it’s really ready. Like really really ready. You want as much of white part of the white head as possible.

For before popping, it must be JUST about to burst. Like very thin skin over the pus, would probably not bleed if popped.

[Acne] Pimple patch ripped my pimple out

Posted by TchaikTheGoat · in r/SkincareAddiction · 5 months ago

So this morning I had a really nasty pus filled pimple on my forehead, so I put on a pimple patch. I waited for 7 hours before taking it off, and when I did, it ripped the pimple off. The pimple patch didn't get rid of any pus, instead it left a hole on my forehead (with a bit of blood) am I doing something wrong here? If so what should I do in the future to get it rid of pimples. I put on another pimple patch for the meantime, hopefully the hole disappears.

Wash with soap and water (you can wash your full face at the same time), dry, and add a new patch.

Patches work best when there's a path for the seepage to the bandage - so a closed pimple is protected by the patch from your fingers and other things, but it won't really drain.

I have a system with insulin needles that can work, but if you are new to skin care, keep it simple! The hydrocolloid patches are great on their own.

Formulations for spot treatments. Low % benzoyl peroxide, Dapsone gel, salicylic acid are common agents. I would NOT put a retinoid under a pimple patch.

10 upvotes on reddit
kittenherder93 · 5 months ago

This happens when the pimple is close to the surface it can come out in one piece, which is ideal there’s no piece of it left behind. Just treat the spot, and keep it covered with a new patch and it’ll heal up quickly!

This is normal with really large ones, it basically popped it for you without causing any skin trauma (no squeezing or picking). Definitely apply any medication you use and then put another one on until it’s flattened more or not bleeding to give it an environment to heal. The hole will definitely disappear in a few days.

639 upvotes on reddit
LivingReality2984 · 5 months ago

When you take it off and it has puss coming out would you still pop?

53 upvotes on reddit
Open_Fee377 · 5 months ago

No, you can take a q-tip and clear off any openly oozing pus and wash your face normally though. Then put another on when you finish your skin-care routine.

I personally never ever pop or pick at acne though. I rarely will use a diabetic needle to lightly prick a hole in the top of a white-head before I place a sticker on to help it drain easier but no tools, squeezing, touching, popping besides that.

When I worked in the hospital, we kept hydrocolloid bandages on until they fell off instead of changing them every shift. If we needed to change a wound more frequently, we’d use medical taps because it doesn’t stick as long. Pimple patches are just small hydrocolloid bandages, so I’d guess that the issue was trying to remove in 7 hours.

[Misc] What is the goal of pimple patches?

Posted by BlackWidow1990 · in r/SkincareAddiction · 2 years ago

I’m trying to not pop my pimples or pick at my face. I had a pimple in between my bottom lip and chin, it was a big red swollen pimple. I decided to put a pimple patch on instead of squeezing it until I bled. I took off the patch this morning and the pimple turned into a white head, which I then had to pop as there was no way it was going to be covered with make up this morning. Once I popped it, it turned back into the red pimple, but it was a lot smaller.

This leads me to ask, what exactly is the goal with these patches? Is it suppose to turn into a white head? Or is it supposed to make it smaller?

I use pimple patch whenever there's an incoming pimple. It helps lessen the swollen feeling and a day after, it lessens the size too. If there's pus, it sucks it up. Btw, I'm using COSRX pimple patch which is a hydrocolloid one. Very effective!

They suck up fluid. So, they won't really do much for anything that hasn't come to a head. However, there are ones with microdarts in them that are also medicated and I put those on any painful underground ones overnight. They do seem to help bring them to a head and start the healing process. But your standard pimple patches are mainly just to suck up fluid and keep them clean and dry so they heal faster.

I find that the pimple patch gets the pimple ready to pop. It brings the gunk to a head, I pop the sucker, put on another patch, and it'll heal quicker.

YES. If I pop a pimple (carefully) and then leave a pimple patch on overnight, 99% of the time it will be completely flat and smooth in the morning.

iirc when the pore is open and clean, keeping it in a closed moist environment makes it heal better? reduce scarring? (I'm not super well versed in this tho so someone can correct me)

They're most effective on popped pimples. They essentially keep popped pimples moist which helps them heal. They also keep the area clean and keep dirt and fingers away.

I do like to use them on those big red ones you described. I think it helps them become a whitehead quicker, which I can then pop and put another patch on.

Once it becomes a white head, I put a pimple patch on (usually overnight) and when I take it off the next morning, it has usually sucked up the gunk out of it without pain or irritation like when you pop it.

How to properly use PIMPLE PATCHES?

Posted by chibunnie · in r/AsianBeauty · 3 years ago

I'm just confused if im doing it right. I cleanse my face then put the patches (i use cosrx) directly onto my pimples overnight. When i remove them, the pimple bursts (?) and the pus drained. I cleanse my face again and do not place any more products on top of the deroofed pimple once its dry. But what i notice is that the pimple recurs so i have to place another patch again. The cycle continues... i notice days after its healed that im left with a scar.

What is the best way how to prevent recurrence of the pimple and how to prevent scarring? Are there liquids needed to place when u cover the pimple (eg tea tree oil)? What are good pimple patch brands?

First, you should be applying a new patch after every time you wash your face until the pimple is fully drained (ie you put a patch on and 6+ hours later the patch is still empty). So when you say your pimple bursts/pus drains, and you cleanse your face again, you should be placing another pimple patch on the “deroofed” pimple. Pimple patches are made of hydrocolloid, which blocks out germs from getting into your pimple when it is healing and keeps it from being too dry (skin needs moisture to repair itself, skin being too dry makes it hard for your pimple to heal). A burst pimple is just like an open wound in that sense. So maybe your pimple is reoccurring because the original pimple simply isn’t healed yet and now that it’s “deroofed/burst” there’s an opening for bacteria or other germs to get it and cause it to become infected again. Also, sometimes pimples are very deep, and although it seems like the pimple had drained initially, there’s still pus and germs and sebum deep under your skin; it usually takes me 4-6 patches (two per day; one for daytime and one overnight) just to fully drain a deep pimple.

Do note that pimple patches don’t stop pimples from forming, they only help drain existing pimples and provide a proper condition for the pimple to heal. If you want to prevent pimples from forming you’ll also need to use a treatment meant for that, such as a BHA, retinoid, etc.

Also, the majority of pimple patches are the same, as most of them are 100% hydrocolloid. (There are exceptions, such as cosrx intensive master patches which have salicylic acid and tea tree in them; my favorite patches.) Just use whichever ones you feel comfortable with or can afford. You can even use cut up hydrocolloid bandages if you don’t care about how it looks & want to save money.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I put a new patch on in the morning and night. If my pimple has popped, I put a patch on it, then remove the patch to swap out a new patch. I feel like my skin is starting to heal and then when I take the patch off to change it, it peels a layer of my skin off like re opening the wound. How do you prevent that from happening?

My preferred method to use them is to pop the pimple (with SPECIALIZED TOOLS), apply alcohol to them and then put the patch on top directly (so pimple is open / pus drains directly into bandage). In the morning I remove them and wait about 30 mins before washing my face (with water only).

Putting the patch directly on the pimple without opening the “head” (sorry if this seems gross) seems to do nothing for me (unless they are those with the medicine in the small spikes).

My understanding is that you should keep replacing the patch until the wound completely heals. A dry wound (whether it’s a burst pimple or a cut or something else) heals more slowly and scars. These acne pimple master patches are basically the same thing as silicone/hydro colloidal bandages for other skin wounds. Doctors advise keeping wounds moist and covered so that they don’t dry out or scab.

57 upvotes on reddit
MonsieurLeMare · 3 years ago

I’ve never had that happen before when I use them, but I wonder if the patch leaves the pore more open afterwards. Maybe try replacing with a clean patch after you cleanse, to see if that helps prevent dirt etc from getting back in. I doubt it matters, but I use the Nexcare invisible acne covers, about $8 from Amazon

When my pimple comes to a head (soft white head) or opens, I do my routine and then wipe off product from the spot with a cotton round, dry the area, and apply a pimple patch. Every time I do my routine, I’ll replace my patch until the zit dries/there’s no more white stuff on my pimple patch. At that point, all the pus has been drained (or close to it), the zit much flatter, and it’s safe to let it heal without a covering.

I use the Cosrx pimple patches (easily accessible, three kinds of sizes, but very thick and noticeable) and the olive young acne patches (harder to find, two sizes, thinner and less noticeable). Sometimes, if my zit has closed but the area is still pretty red, I’ll pop on a olive young patch because it makes it less noticeable lol.

I’ve tried the patches with the tiny needles that are supposed to “inject” some ingredient (maybe niacinamide? can’t remember) but I’m not convinced any of the pimple patches that are “infused” with other ingredients like tea tree oil work better or do anything different.

3 upvotes on reddit
littlewren11 · 3 years ago

The only needle patches I found helpful were the olive young botanic heal brand ones with a BHA in it. Without an active like a BHA or AHA I think the needle patches are inferior to the usual hydrocolloid patches.

Just another perspective, these are awful for me. It makes my hormonal cysts angrier. Generally salicylic acid is too strong for my skin and that always seems to be in the microdart ones. I have better luck using a diabetic lance to get the head followed by a cica patch.

But instead of squeezing it too hard I take tweezers and remove the top of the white gunk and push gently so it's all out. And then I put a patch over it ! It works better for me this way. I use the COSRX patches when I reeeeally want a pimple to go away !

yes, the patches dont work unless i do, i find that it helps with me not scratching the scab afterwards, it heals better too but obviously theres still going to be hyperpigmentation, but the scar is definitely not as bad as if i just left it to scab over and me picking at the wound.

in my experience patches literally do not suck up ANYTHING except the oil on the surface of my face unless i squeeze the zit out first, wash my face and apply the patch on skin (pat dry with towel, patch, then watery toner and cream), but ymmv

edit) tried many patches, skinfood, vt cica, cosrx and i personally liked the thinner ones (skinfood, vt) better, the thick ones peeled up way too easily because i layer sunscreen on TOP of the patches in the morning, i dont have a preference between skinfood and vt i just choose the cheaper one, i recently bought the isntree onion patches but i forgot to bring it with me😭 i'll prob update this or make a seperate post when i get around to using it.

I use disposable lancets. I gently puncture the pimple, wipe off anything that comes onto and then put on the patch. I don’t squeeze after lancing. This method always works for me. For super deep cystic pimples, I’ll use a micro dart patch until it comes to a head then I switch over to lancing/hydrocolloid patch to absorb the gunk.

[Acne] Pimple Patches??

Posted by SameYogurtcloset3506 · in r/SkincareAddiction · 5 months ago

Hey guys, hope you’re doing well. I have been using pimple patches for a few years now. I find they work well sometimes. However, when I use patches on my inflamed acne (with very prominent whiteheads) the pimple will burst/pop when removing the patches. Obviously this poses a problem since I don’t want scarring and that’s counterproductive to what a pimple patch is for. I’ve read to use thinner or non-stick patches but I’ve tried so many and it happens no matter what. Even if I don’t leave it on for a long time, if I tried to slowly remove the patch, if I try to stretch the patch, etc etc. nothing works. Am I doing something wrong? Or should I just be using a different method for this type of acne completely? I just like throwing a patch on because the pimples are quite the eye sore. Any help is appreciated, TIA☺️

The point of pimple patches is to draw out the contents of your pimple so they would have to “pop” under the patch to do that.

If you’re just looking for a cover up and don’t want it to pull the contents out, maybe just a bandaid instead.

Do I squeeze the pimple after using a pimple patch?

Posted by odysseus600 · in r/SkincareAddicts · 3 months ago

Heyyy so I've been using pimple patches for a while sometimes they get the all the gunk out and sometimes there's still a bit, my mom says I shouldn't squeeze it out but it just feels unclean when I don't squeeze it I usually leave it for 10-24 hours before removing the patch.

And my routine after it is cleanser, niacinamide, retinol, hyaluronic acid and moisturizer then I add another pimple patch to let it heal and remove it at night to do the same routine.

I was wondering if that's an okay aftercare routine for pimple? and If I should stop squeezing the pimples?

jus stick a pimple patch over it after you've held down a tissue til it's stopped bleeding. you'll be fine.

it's not recommended as it opens it to infection and can make it prone to scarring

I mean it’s not a huge problem, but it’s not also something you wanna keep doing because you are much more likely to give yourself scars.

[Product Question] How should i use the cosrx pimple patch?

Posted by Skingram · in r/SkincareAddiction · 7 years ago

I have two pimples, one thats quite ready to pop and another one that is already a whitehead but i wouldn’t call it ‘ripe’.

Should i just stick the patches on my clean skin or should i poke the pimple with a sterilized needle then apply the patch?

Apply the patch on clean skin, no need to puncture it.

I usually apply them on when I can see the white head, on clean skin.

They absorb moisture basically so it won't do a whole lot unless you've opened it. I find it stops those very dry, flaky scabs which means it can heal a bit better. It forms a gel from the moisture from the wound and then gradually the patch becomes more permeable so the wound can dry out.

I will preface this by saying that i usually pop zits before following these steps because for me they seem to go away faster when I do:

  1. Cleanse

  2. Stridex, let dry

  3. Apply acne patch

  4. Continue with routine, making sure to avoid the acne patch (it's been my experience that they fall off when products gets on/under them).

[Acne] Several questions about using PIMPLE PATCHES! <3

Posted by ImDemandingARefund · in r/SkincareAddiction · 4 years ago

TL;DR
Ignoring brand claims: which kind of acne are pimple patches the best for; which kind are they useless for?

If you’ve used both types of patches (typical-hydrocolloid and medication-infused); which acne-treatment/s were in the medicated one/s? If the medicated patches were better, to what extent? Did acne-type have impact?

Do you use spot treatments directly underneath pimple patches? When you do this is fluid extraction increased OR acne inflammation reduced OR size reduction enhanced to a notable extent? If “yes and yes” which anti-acne ingredients does it/they have, do you wait in between, is adhesion impacted, any favorite spot treatment products?

MY CONCERNS
I love using pimple patches but I’ve been wanting to find out if there’s a better way of utilizing them compared to what I’ve been doing.

MY PIMPLES
When I breakout my acne types include closed microcomedones, closed comedones, pustules, papules and white heads. I don’t get cysts, nodules or true blackheads — I just get sebaceous fillaments that impersonate blackheads.

##Question
I’m interested in knowing if there is a general consensus regarding the effectiveness of pimple patches in relation to acne type.

Which types of acne do you feel pimple patches work the BEST for. Which types of acne do you feel it works decently for? Which types of acne do you feel it treats poorly? Please answer according to your own personal experience and not based on the manufacturer’s directions or other customer’s reviews.

MY PIMPLE PATCHES
Thus far I’ve used three different pimple patch products. However, all three are the “regular kind” of patches (in essence; patches that don’t have any acne fighting actives infused in them). Specifically; I’ve used Curology’s “Emergency Spot Patches”, CosRX’s “AC Collection Acne Patches” and Peach Slices’s “Acne Spot Darts”; they all had great adhesion, absorbed plenty of fluid, came in good/decent sizes and got the job done relatively well! I

I haven’t received them yet so I can’t review them but I also impulse bought Derma Angel’s “Day + Night Acne Patches” because they were only $2.99 for 48 (pre-tax) on Amazon and half of them are for daytime use; they’re claiming these patches are so “small”, “ultra-thin“ and “invisible” that they can’t be seen at all.

##Question To people who have used both regular and medicated pimple patches: have you noticed any kind of positive difference in the effectiveness of the medicated-patches?

If so: how dramatic of a difference does it make, which acne-treating ingredient/s were infused in the patches, what’s the name of the product/s, which brand is/are the patches from and what kind of acne lesions did it perform better on?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

MY ACNE TREATMENTS
I use a vast variety of different methods and products in a given week to prevent acne + eliminate acne + calm acne inflammation
However, besides the pimple patches they’re all entire-face treatments, including; comprehensive cleansing, >!(anti-acnegenic hydrating micellar water w/ cotton rounds for pre-cleansing | non-comedogenic mild face washes w/ cool water & Japanese foam maker for washing | cold water for rinsing | soft microfiber makeup remover cloth for drying)!< cold therapy w/ a full-face reusable spa gel mask, delicate manual exfoliation w/ a gentle scrub, salicylic toner, mandelic/lactic solutions, tea tree essence, azelaic acid serum, retinoid gels alternated with azelaic + tretinoin + clindamycin cream, and niacinamide-containing lotion.

##Question I was wondering if any of you have ever used a spot treatment shortly before applying a regular pimple patch on top. If so, does this seem to make the pimple patch work better at diminishing your spots overnight compared to when you don’t use a spot treatment right beforehand. If yes, what kind of spot treatment do you use? Do you put on the patch immediately after applying the spot treatment or do you wait a few minutes to let it fully dry down; is the adhesion of the patch significantly impacted when you do this?

*MY ISSUE
Sometimes my stubborn acne needs up to three acne patches (over night, morning, evening) to flatten. If I have multiple pimples like this I go through the package very quickly; so I would consider paying a bit more for medicated-patches or buying some type of drugstore-priced spot treatment in the case it will make using pimple patches more effective.

Note: >!I can’t use BPO because it degrades or otherwise contradicts various products I use!<

>!So if you want to recommend a good medicated patch to me make sure there’s no peroxides (otherwise the anti-acne ingredients used doesn’t matter) !<

>!If you want to recommend a spot treatment to me it’s best to pick something with an ingredient like; witch hazel, sulfur, tulsi/basil, zinc oxide, zinc pyrithione, zinc pca, succinic acid, betaine salicylate, probiotics, camphor, bee venom or another ingredient that has some kind of academic/clinical evidence andisn’t redundant for me to use in a separate product (in essence; isn’t already included in my aformentioned anti-acne regime.) You can break the redundancy ‘rule’ if truly feel the spot treatment is formulated in a very unique way that makes it far superior to most of the full-face products you’ve tried with the same ingredient.!<

Note: >!f you have miscellaneous tips and tricks for making pimple patches work better or opinions on the tips other people like to give I’d love to know them! (ex; apply after which routine step, minimum amount of hours to leave on, not disturbing the pimple before applying VS stabbing a hole in the center, steaming the zit VS icing it VS leaving it the f○€% alone)!<

Hydrocolloid. 100%. The other ones offer little benefit besides providing a barrier and you would be better off using a stronger spot treatment instead in that case. I like cosrx pimple patches the most!

CosRx makes a few! Which one are you referring to?

The “AC Collection Acne Patches”, the “Acne Pimple Master Patches”, the “Clear Fit Master Patches” or the “Master Patch Intensive”

I presume you mean the one with “pimple” in its name but I just want to make sure.

I currently have cyst acne. It was very big yesterday before I bought Derma Angel acne patch. I used the night acne patch and found that it took the acne pus when I peeled the patch. Then, I put anti acne serum and find that the serum made my post-acne become like having cyst again with its pus after several hours.

After that, I put again day acne patch and peeled it off 8 hours later. I found there's a whiten part in the hydrocolloid patch, which means it absorbs the pus or whatever it is which was left after the first big cyst peeled off. Now I put again the night patch and I will update the development of my post-acne peel off later.

I've tried patches that are medicated with tea tree oil, which I will use on a spot if it isn't super inflamed/sensitive/broken skin. I'm not totally sure if it makes the patch more effective than a regular one but I like the idea of it and it doesn't make it worse lol.

I don't use pimple patches on anything that is really under the skin because I find it pointless. If it's near the surface of the skin and it feels like there will be fluid to pull up (vs a blackhead or something) then I'll use one. Or if I've already popped something, then I'll definitely use them.

Edited to add: I wouldn't put my own spot treatment under a pimple patch because I can't imagine it still adhering to the skin as well. Even if I use micellar water and I don't rinse it off first, the patch doesn't stick as well.

Pimple patches - using right after cleansing?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/SkincareAddictionUK · 4 years ago

So I’ve got some pimple patches to help with my hormonal acne, mainly the ones that come up as big sore whiteheads. I honestly mainly want the benefit of not being able to pick them but also hope they can reduce scarring.

Advice seems to be that you cleanse, dry, apply the patch and then get on with your routine. But how do I stop all my other products (toner, essence and moisturiser) from soaking the patch off? I can see me easily slipping and letting product get to the edges of the patch, which will surely stop it adhering properly.

So I have a possibly very stupid question. Do you guys cleanse, do your skincare, then wipe product away from the spot area specifically and apply the patch, or put the patch on and then apply product VERY carefully to the rest of your face?

Edit: thank you for the advice last night! I followed the box instructions echoed here to cleanse, dry the area and then apply the dot and hold it on to help it adhere. The dots then help up against toner, essence, moisturiser and even a little Rosehip oil I patted on (carefully). Really impressed with the dots for spots so far!

I just do my whole routine then put some micellar water on an earbud to clean the spot and surrounding area before applying the patch, works like a charm :)

As soon as I finish cleansing , I use a cotton pad and dry that area only! Then I put the patch on! It works best when nothings on it! I had no problem with products seeping through. What patch are you using?

I’m using dots for spots and hoping to buy the cosrx ones when I next do a stylevana order!

I haven’t tried using them yet but will give it a go as you’ve advised, thank you! All the info I read said to apply after cleansing only but I couldn’t work out how to then not soak it with my toner etc! Hopefully the brand I’ve got is sticky enough

I do the exact same thing that /u/maypie26 mentions. I've done it with both Dots for Spots and the black COSRX patches and never had any issues. The only time when a patch became soaked enough to come off by itself was when I forgot I had one on and jumped into the shower.

I use the COSRX patches too - I'll cleanse, dry the area, apply the patch and then do the rest of my routine! I've never had a problem with them coming off, I'm usually just pretty careful when it comes to applying my product around where the patch is!

Lol reading these comments maybe I apply moisturiser too aggressively because I sometimes get the patch sliding off during my routine

Mine also does! I have to be really careful going nowhere near the patch with my toners or moisturiser otherwise it comes off.

The dots for spots ones stick really nicely to the skin. I managed to keep one on for about 2 days before it soaked off, that's 4x skincare routines!

Applied after cleansing, before other products applied.

That’s really reassuring! I’m excited to try it tonight. Working from home has made me struggle with not picking them through the day so I’m looking forward to something stopping me from doing that AND hopefully improving the spot/scar.

That's the exact reason I bought them! Let me know how it goes. It helped me a bit.

Also: they are good for small scrapes.

How to correctly use a pimple patch

Key Considerations for Using a Pimple Patch:

  1. Clean the Area: Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove any dirt, oil, or makeup. Pat the area dry before applying the patch.

  2. Choose the Right Patch: Select a patch that suits your needs. Hydrocolloid patches are great for absorbing moisture and reducing inflammation, while those with active ingredients (like salicylic acid) can help treat the pimple.

  3. Apply to a Dry Pimple: Make sure the pimple is dry before applying the patch. This ensures better adhesion and effectiveness.

  4. Press Firmly: Place the patch directly over the pimple and press down firmly for a few seconds to ensure it sticks well.

  5. Leave it On: Keep the patch on for at least 6-8 hours, or overnight for best results. This allows the patch to absorb pus and oil from the pimple.

  6. Remove Gently: When you’re ready to remove the patch, do so gently. If it’s still white or swollen, you may want to leave it on longer.

  7. Follow Up: After removing the patch, you can apply a soothing moisturizer or spot treatment if needed.

Takeaway: Pimple patches are most effective on early-stage pimples or those that are not yet fully formed. They work best when applied as soon as you notice a breakout. Avoid using them on cystic acne or deep, painful pimples, as they may not adhere well or provide the desired results.
