How to Prevent Acne Breakouts

TL;DR

  • Focus on prevention through a consistent skincare routine, dietary adjustments, and lifestyle changes.
  • Use products like retinoids and azelaic acid for prevention and treatment.
  • Maintain good hygiene practices, such as changing pillowcases frequently.

Skincare Routine

A structured skincare routine is essential for preventing acne. Many people recommend using prescription-strength retinoids like adapalene or tretinoin to prevent breakouts [1:1]. Azelaic acid is also popular for its ability to control sebum production and fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) [1:2], [1:4]. A typical routine might include gentle cleansing, applying active ingredients like azelaic acid in the morning, and using stronger treatments like tazarotene at night [1:5].

Dietary Adjustments

Diet plays a significant role in acne management. Reducing sugar and dairy intake has been beneficial for some individuals [3:2], [4:1]. Some users noted that cutting out these foods cleared their skin within weeks. Drinking plenty of water and maintaining a balanced diet can also support clearer skin [4:1], [4:2].

Lifestyle Changes

Several lifestyle changes can help prevent acne. Ensuring adequate sleep, managing stress, and avoiding touching your face are commonly recommended strategies [1:1], [2:2]. Regular exercise can improve circulation and overall skin health, although it's important to cleanse the skin afterward to remove sweat [4:2].

Hygiene Practices

Good hygiene practices are crucial in preventing acne. Changing pillowcases frequently and using clean towels for your face can reduce the transfer of oils and bacteria [2:4], [5:6]. It's also advised not to wash your face with hot water, as it can strip natural oils and exacerbate acne [2:1].

Avoid Overwashing

While keeping your face clean is important, overwashing can lead to increased oil production, potentially worsening acne [5:1], [5:2]. Washing twice a day with a gentle cleanser is generally sufficient unless you have specific needs due to environmental factors.

By combining these approaches—consistent skincare, dietary mindfulness, lifestyle adjustments, and proper hygiene—you can effectively manage and prevent acne breakouts.

Do you treat the pimples while they’re inflamed or after they subside?

In terms of pimple stages this is what I use:

Prevention wise: adapalene 0.1%, azelaic acid 15%. I don't have to worry as much about healing pimples if they stop happening in the first place

When a pimple is forming: benzoyl peroxide 4% short contact therapy, then wash off. It's a little too drying for me to use daily for prevention so I use it on pimples as a spot treatment

Healing pimple (dark marks - PIH/PIE): both adapalene and azelaic acid still target this so they play multiple roles for acne management. There are a lot of other ingredients popular for fading hyperpigmentation but personally I think getting the acne under control first makes more sense. I just added the azelaic acid so I'll see how I feel about it helping with this before adding more

Sunscreen application is a must.

AB is really good for supporting the skin barrier especially when I was getting used to the adapalene.

i also like the approach of focusing on prevention! i hear many good things about azelaic acid but more of as fading pie/pih. i’m on the look out for gentler options to control sebum and breakouts daily

Yeah, the adapalene is definitely the heavy hitter for prevention! But it's not the most gentle hahahah. Azelaic acid is pretty mild in comparison

hi there, may i know how did you incorporate adapalene and azelaic acid into your routine? wouldn’t it be very irritating? and do you mind sharing your skincare routine?

It's a pretty common combo, especially for tretinoin users

I've been using adapalene for over a year so my skin has been adjusted to point I can use it daily for a while now. This was incorporated slowly with a barebones routine

I just added the azelaic acid, haven't had issues with my barrier yet.

AM: wash with water, moisturizer (purito Oat in gel cream, minon amino cream on cheeks), azelaic acid (starting off with every other day for now, going to try to work up to daily), sunscreen (BoJ aqua fresh or eucerin oil control if outside activity)

PM: Matsuyama hadauru gel cleanser (if used water resistant sunscreen), prequel Gleanser, moisturizer, adapalene

I'm not particularly loyal to any cleansers, moisturizer, or sunscreen, it's just what I'm using currently

Both. My acne is my main skin concern and my routine is built around it. I never change from this routine.

AM: cetaphil gentle skin cleanser, Rx Azelaic Acid 15% Gel, Aestura 365 Atobartier cream, Skin1004 Sunscreen

PM: Bioderma micellar water, cetaphil gentle skin cleanser, Tazarotene .1% cream

tazarotene and azelaic acid are the main ingredients to help with my acne.

Does the micellar take off your sunscreen? I’m assuming you use it with cotton pads? I’m looking for acne steps for my 16 year old. I think oil cleansing is too much for him.

Noticed a huge difference when I added some facial massage and face yoga to my routine—helps with circulation and puffiness, especially on days when my skin feels sluggish. I still keep my core routine AB-focused (love my centella and snail!) but the face yoga added a nice boost. It's a calming ritual too, almost like skincare meets self-care.

My acne prevention routine falls into 3 stages: prevention, spot treatment, post acne healing

  1. Prevention: sleeping enough is crucial to my skin not overreacting 😅 if I don’t sleep my whole body is inflamed and I can get acne easier that way, also avoiding fried foods help a lot 😅😅. Otherwise, some kind of prescription strength retinoids like adapalene or tretinoin applied every other night helps to prevent new breakouts or at the minimum whatever breakout appears will be smaller and heal faster.

  2. Spot Treatment: if an area around my face get that soreness before a cyst appears, I slap 20% azelaic acid ointment on it immediately, 2-3 times a day. Usually that calms milder forming acne down but deeper cysts can still form. Once a bump appears I put on some microneedle acne patches on top of the azelaic acid and let the microneedles send the azelaic acid down deeper. This would go on at most 3 days ish and I revert back to azelaic acid until it heals.

  3. Post acne healing: sometimes were left with PIE and PIH, I tend to stick with Azelaic acid until it’s mostly not red anymore and if there is a brown spot left I go in with hydroquinone 5% and along with the use of tretinoin the spot should be gone in a month or two.

Recently was chatting with a pharmacist while picking up Azelaic acid and they actually gave me a tube of clindamycin, they said I should incorporate it into my routine for when I get an open wound with the acne, so i’ll be trying that as well.

Rinse with luke warm water in the AM and before bed- use face lotion after, wash your pillow case often, try not to touch your face.

Do not use body soap or hand soap on your face. Face wash is fine because it’s for your face. Other soaps are too harsh and can cause problems.

Less sugar, wash your face as needed for your skin to get rid of excess oils, towel over pillow or change pillowcase often. If you need more than that, ask someone else

Don't wash your face with HOT water!
I always had pretty bad breakouts, but not washing my face in the shower (I like my showers pretty hot) along with having a clean pillowcase has pretty much eliminated them. I just wash my face afterwards while I'm shaving.

I cut sugar and dairy from my diet when I was 16 and suffering from zits, although it wasn’t the cystic type of acne. My skin cleared up completely within a few weeks. I had gotten my first bout of acne when I was in the fifth grade, and I suffered from breakouts for years until I made that dietary change.

Get a good face cleanser and moisturizer.

If you have a breakout one thing you can do is before bed take some ice, wrap in a towel and rest on breakout area for 10 minutes. It reduces swelling.

Don't touch your face during the day. Change your pillow case every few days.

Also you might end up like some of us in our 40s still getting breakouts.

That last point is so true - my dad is almost 60 and he still gets pimples. My grandpa had the same oily skin so there has got to be a genetic component. I've just come to terms with the fact that I will never have perfectly clear skin.

i urge you and your family to research tretinoin! complete life changer for some people, though you need a script. check in with your dermatologist, and who knows, they can give you both advice and the medication you need to feel happy with your skin, should you so desire.

Sugar is the main cause of acne imho.

Besides that, I also find that:

  • Exercise sweat from cardio somehow really helps my facial skin.

  • I like using the product "Weleda skin food" on my face after taking shower.

  • Avoid using soap on your face when taking shower.

  • Drink more water

  • Food allergies. Try changing your diet a bit. This doesn't just apply to skin issues but also to people who are trying to get flat abs. Sometimes food allergies make you bloated and you never know why if you're not experimenting with changing, cutting out different parts of your diet from time to time. I happen to know that eating raw cashews makes my face break out. Eating raw almonds helps my digestive system and flattens my abs a bit - or at least reduces the feeling of bloat.

  • If none of the above works might want to see a dermatologist

Keep a clean diet (little sugar)

Stop washing your face with soap.

Use jojoba oil to very lightly moisturize (dime size amount.

No. If you're not working in an environment that gets your skin greasy, you shouldn't be washing your face more than 2 times a day. Stripping your skin of it's natural oils can actually make things worse.

It might help some people, it could also make it worse for some people. Overwashing can be just as mush of a problem as not washing enough.

I get more zitty when consuming junk food sugars (think gummy bears and chocolate). But anything in regards to diet is very personal and there are necessarily any parallels between two individuals.

I know people who get zits eating oily food/cheeses/processed carbs.

Everything triggers mine. But it’s weird cuz when I actually stick to a daily skin care routine my skin gets worse. When I go to bed without washing my face or even when I leave makeup on my face (which I rarely do cuz ew) I’ll have little to no inflammation and usually don’t have any new breakouts the next morning either. So idk what the fuq I’m supposed to do or what the secret is but I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t

It sounds like you have sensitive skin. When you skin your skin care routine, you give your skin a break from products that don't work for you & it calms down. Possibly adding more simple & calming products to your routine would have a positive effect.

How do I prevent more acne from developing.

Posted by 1_greyskies_1 · in r/Fungalacne · 10 days ago

I’m having a flare up of fungal acne because of my job. I have to stand outside for long hours in the hot sun, so I sweat ALOT. I also prefer to wear makeup at my job because I sell things to people and looking put together helps a lot. I also have lots of dandruff that never seems to go away. My skin care and makeup is fungal acne safe, and I’ve been using dandruff shampoo but it doesn’t seem to help. I think it’s because I still have to sweat and stand in the sun which is allowing the acne to keep growing. Help?

Shower after work because the longer sweat and heat stay on your skin, the more fungal acne can flare. Quick showers immediately after work help.

If you can, take short breaks in the shade and gently pat sweat off with a clean cloth or blotting paper.

You can potentially ask your derm for the oral treatment. It’s apparently more effective. I did read it potentially causes issues with your liver though so be careful. I try to powder my face as much as possible to keep it dry

If you get breakouts, always do a trial of removing dairy for at least a month. You will know pretty quickly if it's helpful or not. Also a good quality, broad spectrum probiotic can really help improve acne if you also have gut issues such as constipation, bloating, diarrhoea etc as well.

Adding to this, wash your hair! Build-up from your hair can easily transfer to your pillows then to your face

Or wear a bonnet or some other kind of silk head wrap to minimize contact with the skin while protecting the hair.

Also I want to mention if you have poor mental health and struggle with this type of thing or are feeling overwhelmed; this is not required of you in any way. Do not add more to your plate than you can handle. Whatever you're doing is enough. You are enough.

Also, know that having your hands near/ in your mouth is a calming response. Think of a group of kindergartners listening to a scary story… where are their hands? Where do we put our hands when we’re concerned or thinking?

Stress, alone, may or may not cause acne, but our behavior with our hands certainly does.

how to prevent acne breakouts

Key Considerations for Preventing Acne Breakouts

  1. Skincare Routine:

    • Cleanser: Use a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser twice daily to remove excess oil and dirt.
    • Moisturizer: Even oily skin needs hydration. Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer.
    • Exfoliation: Incorporate gentle exfoliation (1-2 times a week) to remove dead skin cells, but avoid over-exfoliating.
  2. Diet:

    • Balanced Diet: Focus on whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit sugar and dairy intake, as they may trigger breakouts in some individuals.
    • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.
  3. Avoid Touching Your Face:

    • Keep your hands away from your face to prevent transferring oils and bacteria that can lead to breakouts.
  4. Makeup Choices:

    • Use non-comedogenic makeup products and always remove makeup before bed to prevent clogged pores.
  5. Stress Management:

    • Practice stress-reducing techniques such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise, as stress can exacerbate acne.
  6. Sun Protection:

    • Use a non-comedogenic sunscreen daily to protect your skin from UV damage, which can worsen acne.

Recommendation: If you continue to experience breakouts despite following these tips, consider consulting a dermatologist. They can recommend topical treatments (like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid) or prescription medications tailored to your skin type and acne severity.
