TL;DR
Understanding Boss Patterns
A key strategy across discussions is to focus on understanding the bosses' attack patterns. For instance, players suggest learning how to tell which attack a boss will use next and using dashes to avoid damage [1:5]
[1:9]. In particular, Athena's Divine Dash can be very helpful for deflecting attacks and avoiding damage
[1:3]
[1:8].
Builds and Boons
Certain builds and boons can significantly enhance your ability to defeat bosses. Ares and Athena combo boons like Merciless End are recommended for dealing high damage while staying defensive [1:1]. For Typhon, Aspect of Supay with Hestia on attack and Zeus blitz on special is suggested as an effective build
[2:2]. Additionally, focusing on chunky damage gods like Hephaestus and Zeus, along with Demeter's freeze, can be beneficial
[4:2].
Survivability and Defense
Increasing survivability is crucial, especially when facing challenging bosses. Some players recommend ditching Death Defiance for single-life arcana options that offer more consistent survivability [2:1]. Utilizing defensive boons such as Athena's Dash Reflect can also help mitigate damage during boss fights
[5:1].
Trial and Error Approach
Many players emphasize the importance of trial and error in learning boss mechanics. It often takes multiple runs to understand the nuances of each boss fight and adjust strategies accordingly [2:4]
[5:2]. Players have shared experiences of needing numerous attempts to defeat certain bosses, highlighting the game's challenging nature
[5:3].
Resource Management and Preparation
Preparation before entering boss fights can make a significant difference. Swapping tools and gathering materials to level up Arcana and gain game-changing incantations is advised [4:1]. Ensuring you have rerolls to optimize boon selection can also enhance your build
[2:2].
These strategies collectively offer a comprehensive approach to tackling bosses in Hades 2, emphasizing both skill development and strategic planning.
How do I beat Hades? I pop every fire skull I can, and I try to stay far away, but he's so fast and hard hitting, even with 3 death defiances, the 100 HP psuedo death defiance, and 300-400 HP, I can barely beat his first healthbar, let alone the second one...
I've gone at him with magnetic cutter gloves, the base shield, and base form spear a good couple times now, but no dice
Best advice I give to everyone, focus purely on not getting hit, as opposed to trying to do damage, and learning how to tell which attack he's going to do. If you can get those down, all that's left is to find opportunity to attack.
Yeah, my first couple of wins were with ranged/DoT builds. They let me focus on dodging. Once I got his pattern down I was able to transition to melee/DPS and now I rarely lose a life
I literally can’t beat him without using hangover Chiron bow lol. I’m on heat 10 with it, but with anything else I am shit
While my personal playstyle is just stack damage and screw health/dodge, i remember how my early runs were about just HP and dodge
It’s sometimes easier to dash through him when he attacks. Athena’s Devine Dash helps a ton.
this is also a good tip bc it opens him up for a couple higher dmg backstabs before he attacks again
try going for Athena’s dash. Helped me learn him a lot, slow me down because I had the deflection, and now he’s swiss cheese. You got this!!
Trial and error. You just have to learn his patterns for the spin, rush and throw and know when to dash away. Also skull explosions can be dashed through.
FYI, even though the game is relatively old, its still pretty common practice to refer to him as Redacted.
try to get Ares and Athena combo boon called Merciles End preferebly with athena dash. Hit him with an attack and dash through him.
I’ve been playing Hades 2 for a while now, and I’m getting to a point in the game where I’m stumped. No dialogue. No gifting options. Can’t upgrade any of my weapons any further. No more incantations. I’m able to get through to both Tartarus and the Summit pretty easily without using any of my death defiances, unless I run into an issue with Prometheus, but I’m still fine. I’ve encountered Typhon twice now, and I’ve gotten him damaged enough to surpass the point where Zeus and the gang helps me out. I manage to get his “hp” quite low (physically obvious) but then always end up dying to him near the end. I obviously cannot tell if I’m close enough to killing him, but it’s very aggravating because he dumps out so many mobs and so many moves that it’s hard to dodge without running into something else. Same goes for Chronos. I’ve fought him many times and have his patterns down, until the second phase starts and then I die. Any tips?
Aspect of supay with hestia on attack and zues blitz on special. Try and get storm ring on the cast as well. Be sure to bring as many rerolls as you can and try to reroll for those gods/boons. I’d also recommend Hera on dash to help clear rooms. I breezed all the way to Rival Typhon and almost beat him first try because the build was so OP. I choked and lost but now that I know what happens I’m sure I’ll get past him Another try or two. I also beat unrivaled Chronos first try with the same build. I really think supay gives you the ability to just sprint around and near enemies so your Scorch and blitz take effect, drop your cast a lot and do some omegas when safe.
As others said, I’d really try to get a lot of hearts going too. Not sure what your health pool looks like going into the fights, but for new players the more max life you have can’t hurt. Wouldn’t take it to the detriment of your build though if you’re trying to get your boons filled up. Sea stars from Poseidon is super useful for extra poms, magic and hearts. Hermes has a boom that replaces first item bought at a shop with another item. So you can get extra boons that way too. I’d still rock with DD personally. I know people like the strength card, but it’s been nerfed a bit and I think fully upgraded DD and Strength, you get more health back with DD than the life bonus from strength. Also take Toula for the DD.
For Chronos' second phase you need to keep in mind that his moveset is roughly the same. Pretty much every one of his new abilities is just area denial to punish you for tunnel-visioning him. Try not to race him down and instead be more methodical with how you're positioning yourself. Try doing this fight with a ranged weapon and try to wear him down without taking a hit. I was having a lot of trouble with him at one point until I took the staff and just slowly chipped him down while focusing on avoiding as much damage as possible. Once I'd done that consistently it made fighting him with every other weapon a hell of a lot easier. To fight Time, you need patience
Typhon... idk. I just picked the game back up a day or two ago and when I'd previously put it down, Eris was as far as you could go on the surface. I've managed to beat Typhon three times now and all three of those times I COMPLETELY maxed out Path of Stars on either the beam (2x) or the meteor hex. Those hexes can carry you if you've got the right boons for quickly spending and gaining magick.
You just have to keep trying and learn the new phases like you did with the first ones. Some of the attacks change up a bit, so don’t muscle memory attacks just because they look similar to the first phase ones.
For Chronos’ second phase, just checking that you know this: he opens with an avoidable instakill. Get to the 1 glowing circle on the clock face. That’s the safe zone. He’ll repeat that occasionally or a different one where he’s in the middle in a black circle and the outer ring of the arena is also black. Stay in the narrow ring between the black zones.
yup, i figured out the instakill crap on my second time cuz i was too overstimulated on my first try to notice it lol. thanks!
You either need higher DPS or more survivability— what are you arcana like? I found it way easier when I ditched death defiance totally for the single life arcana options. Fast hitting weapon like blades or coat special with hestia / Poseidon/ Zeus should do it. If you have supay, there are multiple easy builds off of that with heph/zeus on the special and any other god on attack.
I'n having some serious troubles defeating Zagreus. I just can't seem to adapt to his different builds due to the sheer number of different weapons he might use, not to mention those pesky boons from my Olympian bretheren. I've tried pretty much everything, melee combat, using my Cast to put skulls in the area, summoning wretches, fire beams, urns that trap him. I've also tried healing mid-fight and even summoning Cerberus. Even with my Death Defiances it's just hopeless. Do you guys have any tips for me?
If he's gotten to you you've already lost. It's clear that you've already taken extreme measures, but you haven't even taken advantage of the basics of the Pact of Punishment; even something as making the traps deadlier will weaken him and make your urns more deadly, but why fight him if you can make your minions kill him for you? Make your minions work overtime, and put them through a regimen of calisthenics and hard labor. Put out a summons for more minions while you're at it, and use a stick of middle managers and a carrot of benefits packages while you're at it to keep your minions in line. Start charging convenience fees too, Charon will love the extra free income so his greedy ass will definitely not complain.
Hold a kaizen to improve damage control, customs, inspections, and approval processes as well, those will make his weapons and smuggled Olympian boons less effective.
Oh, Zagreus doesn't want to implement the pact? Taunt him with bounties of Titan's blood and ambrosia. Or better yet, appeal to his pride and taunt him into agreeing to use more heat. Eventually he'll tire of the escape and he'll go back to sulking in his quarters like he used to.
Thanks for the tips, I really appreciate it! I have tried some of the things you mentioned and the funny thing is, I used to do really well at the start, beating him several times in a row. I think my Death Defiances kinda threw him off at the start. Convincing him to pick Extreme Measures 4 was also really helpful at the start but I've been doing worse lately. Maybe that weird skeleton dude could help me out here.
The Narrator seems pretty good at killing Zagreus; you should ask him.
Once he even fell off a cliff. Or something.
Have you considered showing him love and understanding, in an effort to trick him into not laying waste to your realm and destroying your insurance premiums?
Instructions unclear; made him angrier
Just grab him and throw him far away so just dies lmao
Take away that boys allowance
Players sleep hard on this strategy.
So I started the game last night and it felt dragging as how roguelikes are, but I enjoy the grind. The staff is sooo beginner friendly spam special if you find it hard.
Not sure if we can spoil area bosses so I'd go with A1, 2 & 3. A1 is a skill test, dodging and waiting for the timing A2 is a build test, checking if the boons you have work well and can cause enough damage A3 haven't beaten him yet, but I think it's a mix of both as swarms will appear and they are a pain /moment of rest.
Still so much to do resources to farm builds to discover.
If you have any tips/nocturnal arms that is fun to use-boons that it works well with. Let me know.
May moonlight guide us all!!
Welcome! As a lover of this particular brand of progressive challenge, story, and fantastical build-craft, I personally couldn't be happier with hades 2.
It's been a while, but before I unlocked weapon aspects i found focusing on gods with chunky damage like Hephaestus and Zeus along with a freeze from demeter to be the most fun.
Welcome to the geeking out!
Take your time and explore different options, different paths. Unlocking certain dialogue triggers and story progression requires certain things to happen. Even just reaching the boss of a Region will trigger things. Talk to everyone you can who has a ! above their head. Skip nothing.
Make use of the Forget-Me-Not once you have it; it will make your life so much easier finding resources.
Change up your farming focus every now and again. I don't mean some mechanical focus (you used to be able to prioritize tools, but that just changed), I mean opting whether you want to go hard on a bunch of Psyche to level your Grasp, or Ash to unlock Arcana or other things, and so on. Gives a refreshing change of pace as you work to unlock things.
Get Nectar when you can. Every character that you can give Nectar to, give exactly 1 and no more until you've given just about every character 1 Nectar. This goes for Boon-giver gods especially. You may have figured this out already, but it's how you get Keepsakes, and you want to get them ASAP so you have them for runs.
Enjoy the story and dialogue. The gameplay is very fun, but half the draw of the Hades series is the story. If you played Hades 1, you'll know what I mean.
Lastly, take the time to learn enemy attack patterns and how to not take damage. It's a rougelite, damage has a habit of sticking. You don't have a timer.
Death to Chronos!
So, Boss1 shows you, that you take a huge amount of damage from all attacks, which means dodging and keeping distance is a valid and good strategy. Later on some skills let you regenerate health, but thats rare.
Boss 2 throws different dangers together, one on their own is very predictable, but 2 or even 3 is much to calculate with.
Boss 3 is a check if you are skilled enough to endurance a very long fight, as you have to run around a lot with distance weapons (meele is another thing), then it is dancing before and behind him (much easiert than with all overworld bosses, but also doable there)
Or if you do unholy amounts of damage, just throw all attacks out at once.
Sad thing with all bosses except Underworld 2 is, you cannot stack Burn on them, as they have either several phases or just have ways to loose/heal the burn.
Nothing stopping you from building up a shitload of Scorch, it's just those downsides that make you need to evaluate its capacity. It still acts as 1/2 of Origination if anything, and you avoid the issues a bit more with the Hestia boon that accelerates the tickrate. Or you could almost entirely sidestep the problem with Freezer Burn if you get that duo 😂
Didn't it used to be able to stack burn, well burn used to do all damage if it hit the threshold for a different phase
Be sure to check the cauldron and swap tools every now and again. Every now and again it's good to do a run with the sole focus of gathering materials as some incantations are game changing.
When you're able to get companions Frinos can block the first bosses morph attack.
Also make sure you're giving 1 nectar to all characters you can. Not sure if you're new to hades in general but in the first game I didn't do this until beating REDACTED a few times thinking nectar was needed for something else.
Edit almost forgot you can level your Arcana and grasp. Early builds of Hades 2 it was hard to tell where to go to do so and IK many people didn't know how to do so for a week or so
You don't swap tools anymore
Swapping tools gives higher odds of the respective resource showing up if I'm not mistaken. So if you need seeds do a run with the shovel, minerals the pickaxe, psyche the tablet, and bones the fish.
More like Greek out
Hey all, Recently just started playing and am on between 15-20 runs at the moment managing to get to Styx pretty consistently only really having trouble from the Elysium boss. Now this was my most recent sword run and I managed to pick up quite a few neat little boons and Daedelus Upgrades and went into the fight expecting a first win, but alas I think I'm missing a bit of understanding on the boss mechanics to win this fight of yet. I thought I was primed perfectly to button mash my way through him with multiple Attack Damage increases plus Damage mitigation from this and another boon plus Tidal Wave upgrades and 2 Death Defiances, I got to his second form and had him at about 50% before dying from hitting his spawned pots and getting hit with his skulls that cast a debuff on you. Please any help and ideas for which boons or which trinkets to take would be much helpful.
It typically takes around 35-40 run to kill the boss, so you still young and good. I suggest you just learn how he fight and try to boost the mirror for perma buff
I would do it sub 20 but smaug & ornstein in elysium legit took me 30 tries to get down.
35-40? Wow now I feel good about my 26 being my first clear
So I did another 2 runs today, one later that was a spear and another sword run after that, This time I managed to pick up Hermes Double Dash as well as Athena's Dash Reflect and Epic Attack Reflect, I managed to win my first run after 20 goes so that I was really happy with! He is truly a difficult fight and I went through 2 of my 3 defiances getting to him :/
I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I just don’t enjoy the boss fights in this game that much. It kinda feels like you’re forced to play at range which I’m not a big fan of. Chronos feels like his attacks are so insanely fast and require such precise timing to dodge correctly that it becomes nearly impossible especially with all the visual clutter. Also Cerberus is just plain boring.
yeah i never use the skull or torches, ranged is just lame. knives are fun though, get aphrodite boons and close range them fights, youll die alot but utll be funner
Yea the knives are definitely the most fun way to play
You’re not forced to play at range. If you can’t get into melee no offense but it’s a skill issue and you need to practice more
Chronos isnt too bad to fight with the daggers since you can omega attack to teleport behind him. Axe is pretty hard though if you don't get the ranged whirlwind or something
I’m like, generally decent at video games. I’m not a god tier gamer but I pick things up pretty quickly and don’t really struggle with difficulty outside of like, I dunno, the hardest difficulty of Doom or something that’s just kind of insane. But Hades 2 is genuinely kicking my ass and taking my name.
I can usually clear the underworld without many issues. But the surface is just a crapshoot. I can usually make it to Olympus, but once I get there it feels like I do 0 damage and get chunked for 1/4th my health if I get hit. I’ve managed to make it past Prometheus once, made it all the way to Typhon and died on the second phase. Haven’t made it back since.
I really love this game but why tf it so hard
Turn on god mode for a bit? It's not like god mode in other games, it just gives you more damage resistance. The reason why those end bosses are hard is you haven't learned their moves yet. Reminds me of Charon in Hades 1 where he beat my ass with his oar swipes. I had to dodge at him or in the direction of the swing but facing him was so rare that it took longer to learn.
If you're really struggling at the game then I wouldn't underestimate how much just getting a lot of health can help, particularly on the surface runs. Sometimes you just need a big HP bar if you're not good at dodging and you can generally get by on fewer boons than you think, although they are a lot more 'fun'. Once you get better at the game it's really more about outputting DPS than about your own health, but I think just being able to tank more is useful for beginners or people who are struggling.
Learning about boon combos and aiming towards boon combos that synergise both with each other and with your weapon aspect is a big part of the game. Beyond just 'gitting gud' at dodging etc it's probably the area you can improve at the most in the game. I still have a lot of room for improvement in that regard! Partly it's just about experimenting, with some boons/aspects it's more obvious than others. You can dig out content/recommendations from online if needed.
The most important thing imo is learning to protect yourself.
A good build can help you make up for mistakes, but getting good at dodging can let you win with bad builds.
Some of that comes from learning enemy attack patterns and how to avoid them. Know which enemies you need to be close to, which ones to stand behind, which ones to take out from afar, which ones to trap with your cast, etc.
The other side of that is learning your weapons movesets, so you know what openings you can afford to take and what works well in different scenarios.
In terms of builds, you learn what are good gods for difrent types of weapons. Some like the weapon to have a high DPS, others like it to have a high rate of fire, others like it to be aoe. Matching that eith thr attack and special can make a big difference by itself, then learning what secondary boons support it well and what types of duo boons you want.
Turn on God mode
Why did I have to scroll so far down for this
Because OP asked for advice on getting good, not on how to make the game itself easier
First remember that all roguelites have a difficulty that drop over time since the meta progression between runs so do all possible quests and so on.
Second, from arcana, to weapon, keepsake, pet and vows, ensure to fit the playstyle with proper synergies, remember to keep a balance of offense and defense options.
Three, consider god mode option to reduce difficulty since Hades is known to be designed as fairly hard, so the option is there on purpose for thoses who want a more relaxed experience.
I've only gotten to Rivals 2 so far, so no spoilers beyond that but the upgrade in difficulty feels a lot harder than Hades 1 and the bosses feel almost impossible, taking multiple to all death defiances. Are there any advice or tips on what to do or is just a skill issue on my part here?
Make sure you have upgraded all the arcana cards and your weapon aspects and keepsakes - that's your baseline
Then make sure you have a build in mind when starting a run and try to aim for it.
And then it's just pure skill and learning boss moves.
I think its part skill issue and the bosses being a bit too strong. The strategies that we used for their previous forms don't work as great with them like rushing Unrivaled Prometheus would just kill you ASAP. My tips would be to plan your run knowing what you're up against and use all the broken things at your disposal (scorch is bonkers now) Good luck!
Polyphemus 2.0 in particular feels destined for a nerf. I'm kind of enjoying the fight in its current form even though it inevitably has at least one 'he grabbed me from across the screen' moment, but I can't imagine that's the final version of it.
I think they're fine as they are, the whole point of the vow of rivals (and fear in general) is that it's supposed to be hard. It's not like they're THAT hard to begin with if you're experienced with the game.
Aside from the more specific advice folks have given: Be patient with yourself and give yourself some grace with the learning curve.
It's easy to forget a year into EA, but we all struggled with the bosses in their Rival-Free form for the first few weeks after they were initially released as well. While the identity of the bosses themselves are largely unchanged in their rivaled form, in terms of attack patterns and strategies you're basically looking at 8 new bosses to learn at once.
It's going to take time to memorize and adapt your play style accordingly, let alone doing so on a consistent basis. And honestly, that's not an indictment of player skill or even boss difficulty - it's just the reality of having effectively doubled the boss pool AND having done so all at once instead of staggering them across multiple updates like they did with the Surface bosses.
Give yourself time to learn and practice without getting to frustrated by a self imposed timeline of when you 'should' have it down by. It's a LOT to take in at once, give yourself some grace and keep your head clear enough that it's more likely to stick.
I remember the days when Eris gave me more trouble than Chronos. Hell, Prometheus STILL does sometimes.
Polyphemus : Play patiently, keep distance between you and the boss, and only rush in when you know it's safe. Also, Medea only has a few patterns, you'll get used to them over time
Eris : Stay close and play aggressively, go behind her when she prepares her laser. Try to pop the bombs with your attacks during her phase transitions.
Hecate : When she activates dark side, you can get a couple hits in but you need to get away quickly or you'll get hit by her attack spam. It can deal a ton of damage if you're not careful, definitely her most dangerous move.
Scylla : There's a lot going on, but staying mobile will naturally make you evade a lot of the projectiles. You can kinda run laps around the arena and hit whatever is close.
Scylla kill the drummer ASAP and then just keep dashing around taking out tentacles.
My only gripe is for Rivals 3 Underworld, like how can you even dodge or block in the first stage alone
This one gets better quick as you learn the pattern I think, like knowing when it does that annoying backwards swipe. You might have to do times dashes for some of the AoE though, but the ground circles are at least telegraphed.
I'm not good at this game (took me 43 tries w/ God Mode to beat 1st time), and I keep getting hit a lot by the explosions made by the flaming skulls. How to best deal with them?
Have you tried dodging? For your early runs divine dash is your best friend. I also recommend killing the skulls before they explode when you can it will slow the boss down from using his stronger moves because he likes to keep the skulls out.
The problem with dashing is I often overestimate how much dash distance happens and end up right on the explosion line.
Destroying the skulls before they pop will make your life alot easier.
Run straight to the shockwave and double dash trough it.
Remember that if you attack while dashing, you aren't invulnerable
You have the mirror upgrade for 2 dashes right?
I’m sorry but just “have you tried dodging” sounds a lot like a Hypnos comment lol
Oh it is.
I’ve won probably 80% of my Hades fights using a leveled up call, for what it’s worth. That lets you focus on dodging and killing the spawns until your gauge is full
How to defeat bosses in Hades 2
Key Considerations for Defeating Bosses in Hades 2
Understand Boss Patterns: Each boss has unique attack patterns and phases. Spend time observing their moves to learn when to dodge, attack, or use special abilities.
Upgrade Strategically: Focus on upgrading your weapons and abilities that counter the boss's strengths. Choose boons that enhance your damage output or provide defensive capabilities.
Use the Environment: Take advantage of the arena layout. Use obstacles to block attacks and create distance when necessary.
Keep Moving: Staying mobile is crucial. Most bosses have powerful attacks that can be avoided with good movement. Use dash abilities frequently to evade damage.
Manage Resources: Keep an eye on your health and any consumables you have. Use healing items wisely, and don’t hesitate to retreat and regroup if needed.
Learn from Defeats: Each defeat is a learning opportunity. Analyze what went wrong and adjust your strategy for the next attempt.
Recommendations:
Choose the Right Weapon: Some weapons may be more effective against certain bosses. Experiment with different weapons to find the one that suits your playstyle and the boss's weaknesses.
Utilize Boons Wisely: Prioritize boons that enhance your damage or provide crowd control. For example, boons that inflict status effects can help you manage the boss's health more effectively.
Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t get discouraged by defeats. Each run is a chance to improve your skills and learn more about the bosses.
By focusing on these strategies and adapting your approach based on the boss you’re facing, you’ll increase your chances of success in Hades 2. Good luck!
