TL;DR To enable performance mode on Dell laptops, you can adjust settings in the BIOS or use software like Alienware Command Center or Dell Power Manager.
BIOS Settings
Dell laptops often have a "Performance Mode" setting available in the BIOS. This setting allows you to toggle between "Balanced" and "Performance" modes, which affects how power is allocated to the processor [1:1]. The performance mode may provide a boost before the operating system takes over power management
[1:3]. However, it's important to note that undervolting the CPU is typically not possible through BIOS settings
[1:4].
Alienware Command Center
For Alienware models, such as the Area 51m, performance mode can be managed through the Alienware Command Center [3:2]. Some older models might also have a dedicated button on the keyboard (e.g., F6) to switch between modes
[3:3].
Dell Power Manager
Another option for managing performance settings is through the Dell Power Manager application, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store [4]. If issues arise with switching modes, users have found success by using the built-in performance slider present in the taskbar instead of third-party apps
[4:2].
Considerations for Using Performance Mode
Using performance mode will generally allow your laptop to draw more power, providing better performance during demanding tasks such as gaming [5:1]
[5:3]. While it won't harm your laptop under normal conditions, it can lead to increased energy consumption and reduced battery life
[5:4]. It's advisable to use performance mode primarily for GPU or CPU-intensive tasks
[5:5].
Hey. Does anyone know what the user scenario "performance mode" does in the bios. There are two options. Balanced and performance. Seems weird and must do something. It isn't Windows Power plan. Any ideas?
Also anyone know if you can undervolt the cpu?
Thanks.
What performance boosts do you realistically get with making these changes in the BIOS? Also does it impact the battery life then too? I am considering making changes but not if it isn’t a massive gain.
It may be the performance mode before the OS takes over handling things.
You can't UV CPU, you can only play with loadline calibration to gain something.
OK thanks.
This is the performance toggle that the OS setting interfaces with to adjust the power to the processor. If you are booting a non-UEFI OS for some reason, that's how you would have to adjust it.
Cool thanks.
Hello I accidentally enabled something called ultimate performance mode on my laptop, I did this by pressing some combination of keys on the bottom left I did this same thing once before and found out I can undo ultimate performance mode by pressing those keys again but I don't know what the keys I pressed were and I can't find the webpage I found last time that told me what the key combination is. I've tried looking for it but all the articles that tell me how to turn ultimate performance mode off or on but they say to go into settings and power and sleep and then a specific page in power and sleep and my computer doesn't have those settings, as far as I can tell the only way I can turn it off is by figuring out the combination of keys I pressed to turn it on and then press them again, does anyone know the combination. I have a dell inspirion 15 if that is relevant.

I've heard there is a performance mode for the laptops (specifically the area 51m 2019 version) where you can get more consistent frame rates but I'm not sure how to enable it. Are there any tutorials for how to enable it?
It will be in Alienware command centre probably
I have an older model but I have a button on my F6 I think it is, that switches modes
It’s always in performance mode . No optimus on Alienware
hi, so recently i realized i hade my g5 5500 in optimized mode and wanted to put it in performance mode but when i installed this power manager from microsoft store it gave me this prompt, so i did as it said and went to my dell app to change it, but the thing is it automatically goes back to optimized mode. can someone help me figure out a solution for this. thankyou.
delete the app use the built in performance slider present in the taskbar.
do those adjust the power limits like the dell software does?
Please explain it to me like I am 5 years old,I have the core i5 12th gen with nvidia rtx 2050 4gb ram ? Please explain should I use it in performance mode or not ?
Personally, performance mode is always on.
yeah, it's not going to hurt it, just because it's in that mode doesn't mean you are pushing the hardware to its limits a 100% of the time. it's no different than any other mode. the only thing it enables your computer to do, is when you are gaming, and need that extra wattage or power, or MHz, your computer will allow it to use or consume it. whereas in other modes it will cap the wattage/power draw to the components so that it doesn't heat up, draw extra power i.e. battery life, to last longer on battery. its
You will use more energy. That's it. I did have a mac laptop that desoldered its GPU from heat, but I think these LOQs have over-engineered cooling systems from the Legion series and can handle it without sweat. Cap your FPS if you wanna lower temps a bit.
Nothing. But save it for gpu or cpu intensive tasks.
If you want more fps and wanna squeeze out the power out of your laptop means use performance and it will harm your laptop.I use my laptop always at performance mode and rn its in performance mode as well as I always game
What does performance mode even do?
give more fps in games for higher power consumption
Try putting this in the terminal
echo performance | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor
Your laptop might not have that as an option.
Did you upgrade to 22.1? You have to do that.
I think hardware acceleration needs to be supported in order for the performance mode to be enabled, not all open source drivers and/or desktop environments do that correctly, especially without any additional tweaks.
Is there a way to change what color the different modes make the power button? I want to leave my laptop in performance mode but don’t want the power button to be red. The white is nice so I was hoping there was a way to swap the colors around but I cannot find if it’s possible to do so.
I used some thin cardboard to conceal the RAM value for the Llano Laptop Cooler like this, screw that blue light especially at night. A similar approach might be your best bet.
I don’t notice that much difference between the 2 modes
There is a difference, the performance mode increase the power comsumption for the device, if u want to check it install furmark 2 and do a stress test with balanced mode on and then switch to performance mode. This increases the gpu consumption to the maximum it can handle and even with higher TGP (a method to make the gpu get its full power) it will be a huge difference.. for me with my rtx 2060 woth the stock vbios i get 76 watts on average gpu power consumption, and with performance mode i get like 85 at max and with vbios i get to 115 watt, it can make a difference of 10 frames or more for the stock vbios and like 20 to 25 frames for a new vbios depending on the optimization of the game.

Enable legion AI and There won't be much difference between performance mode and balanced mode.
We definitely need control over that light. I don't mind the color, but I really wish we could turn it off because it's too bright at night.
I can’t believe you can’t turn it off it’s so bright! And the glossy oled reflects it. Big miss.
Someone in another thread recommended these giving them a try later tonight.
I gave my laptop to dell services due to an IO chip issue. After receiving the laptop i noticed that under load the CPU frequency was locked at 3000MHz and was not reaching the intended 4000MHz.Even while gaming it was reaching only to 3000MHz.I checked on HWInfo and saw that the core performance boost was disabled. But the thing is there is no option to enable core performance boost in the BIOS.Is there any way i can enable it.Any help would be appreciated.
And yes, the processor performance boost mode is set to aggressive in the power options and maximum processor state is set to 100%
Wait is your turbo boost enabled or you say it’s not.
Quickest way probably throttlestop to enable it if it’s missing from bios.
Then if that overheats your laptop you can set mhz In the frequency settings which you can unlock using the following.
I hope this helps you. The registry key is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\75b0ae3f-bce0-45a7-8c89-c9611c25e100
Change attribute from 1 to 2 to unhide the maximum processor frequency setting in power options.
A simple reinstall of windows solved the problem.I don't know how but the core performance boost is now enabled. Thanks for the help man.I really appreciate it.
Hell yeah. Good stuff. Weird that it enabled on reinstall. Funky stuff lol

Hi,
I am trying to find whether there is any way to switch between performance/ balanced mode in the desktop mode, or whether these profiles are available in gaming mode only.
I cant find any info about it.
It would help to know what hardware you're using
Hello, I recently purchased a dell xps and I cannot enable high performance, i attempted to do it by adding the command in CMD but even that was ineffective, this is a common problem on multiple xps' and any help would be greatly appreciated.
It isn't needed for anything anyway, but I don't know if you can enable it with modern standby or not, it's possible only balanced is available. But if you click on the battery, and move the slider to the right it is basically the same thing.
Yeah turns out it’s not the battery problem, it’s the XPS thermal throttling, so I gotta replace my thermal paste and shit
