How to Improve Laptop Cooling

TL;DR

  • Use a cooling pad or elevate the laptop for better airflow.
  • Replace thermal paste and clean fans regularly.
  • Consider undervolting the CPU/GPU.

Cooling Pads and Elevation

One of the simplest ways to improve laptop cooling is by using a cooling pad, which can help dissipate heat more effectively [2:3], [3:5]. Additionally, elevating the rear of the laptop can significantly enhance airflow without the need for a cooling pad [4:1]. This allows air to circulate more freely under the laptop, reducing temperatures.

Thermal Paste and Fan Maintenance

Replacing the thermal paste with high-quality alternatives like PTM7950 can lower temperatures [3:1]. Regularly cleaning the fans is also crucial to prevent dust buildup, which can impede airflow and increase heat retention [3:4]. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, it's advisable to seek technical service for fan cleaning and thermal paste replacement [3:4].

Undervolting and Software Solutions

Undervolting your CPU/GPU can reduce heat generation without sacrificing performance [2:8]. For software solutions, tools like Notebook FanControl (NBFC) can help you ramp up fan speeds to manage heat more effectively [5:1].

Non-standard Options

For those looking for unconventional methods, creating a custom fan enclosure or modifying airflow by adding extra holes or removing tape over vents can be considered [2:9]. However, these options may require more technical expertise and could void warranties.

Monitoring Temperatures

It's important to monitor your laptop's temperatures to ensure they remain within safe limits. Ideal gaming temperatures are generally below 95 degrees Celsius, depending on the specific CPU and GPU [4:1]. Tools like Nvidia monitoring can provide insights into GPU temperatures, while thermal imaging cameras can help assess surface temperatures [4:2], [4:3].

By following these strategies, you can effectively manage your laptop's cooling and maintain optimal performance during intensive tasks.

This (hopefully) is temporary, I made it tonight. My four year old laptop has been through a lot and this is all I can do to get “cool” enough to run games at a decent frame rate let alone run at all. I also don’t want to spend money on a cooler that does the same thing and costs more if I’m getting an actual pc. Just look at the temps, I need a new thing of thermal paste but is just too much.

Hell yeah dude!

Though I would consider turning the fan around, the intakes are on the bottom of the laptop so you want the fan blowing fresh air into the box not blowing it out.

11 upvotes on reddit
buzzyboy42 · OP · 4 months ago

I was thinking it maybe would pull the hot air out, but I don’t have an intake fan so it’s useless. Thanks.

1 upvotes on reddit
Jack70741 · 4 months ago

No, it's not useless, if you turn the fan around, it will create a higher pressure in the box that will want to escape any way it can. That means much of it will force its way through the laptop intake. You don't want another fan blowing out because you want the air to exit via the via the vents on the back of the laptop.

Trust me this is a solid idea you have, just turn the fan around and it will work a lot better.

Why do so many people still seem to struggle with the temps?? Mine never goes above ~85 C while gaming.

85 Celsius is 185 Fahrenheit so about mine after the box “upgrade”.

you just need a gap from the bottom I.E it sitting on the desk and not on a blanket. The box and intake fan (now that you turned it around) are prob still choking it off.

Not an expert but I'm sure that replacing those fans with better ones will do the trick

Yeah.. not going to happen since each laptop has vastly different fans. Replace the cooling paste for better paste or pads. You could mod the airflow (extra holes/remove parts of tape over vents. Or put a laptop cooler under it. Acer has crap cooling. Laptops are really hard to keep cool.. lots of hardware in a tiny box.

I replaced the thermal paste a month ago, and the temperatures are definitely lower than when I first bought it. I also cleaned the fans inside. But I was wondering about some non-standard options.

So care to recommend replacement fans?

Afaik each manufacturer has custom fans and there isn't a commercial solution to just swap them out for noctua or something.

It really depends on if your laptop is lucky enough to have aftermarket fans.

Idk man, it was just a random thought. I don't know that much about laptops or computers to know what's a viable upgrade and what's not, that's why I started my comment with "I'm not an expert..."

Mock up a 3D fan enclosure for the whole back. Then fit in intake and output vents.

Might look a bit odd but then again you didn't indicate what you wanted.

My dad, back in the old days of early laptops, used a cooling base with fans built into it.

If that laptop has been properly designed, it should need no additional cooling. Just make sure not to block the vents.

I hardly recommend cleaning the fans ( don't do it yourself go to technical service) and check thermal paste Then look at the settings for the power of the fans depending on the brand that you use maybe the " gaming mode " or something like that. Then although somebody says that they are cousing your device to collect more dust maybe you can consider buying a cooling pad

Clean and repaste with PTM7950 and thermal putty.

Maybe add a cooling base, best is to use the laptop in a room with AC.

You can always liquid metal the CPU to make the transfer of heat from the cpu die to the cooling system much easier. Also, just lifting the rear of the laptop of the surface that you're putting on will do as much if not more than a cooling pad, so you don't need that. IDEAL gaming temperature is below 95 degrees c. It depends more on the actual CPU and GPU that the laptop is running. Most likely if it's an intel chip and is cooled well, max should be 90c.

Aldeusciel · OP · 3 years ago

Wow, I see my GPU temperature at 60 degree with nvidia monitoring. I think I’m a crazy idealist.

How can I check my actual laptop temperature ? Maybe I’m not looking it well 🤔 (seems kinda hot sometimes)

Z2810 · 3 years ago

You want to monitor surface temperature then? Like the keyboard and the bottom of the laptop? AFAIK, the best way to do that is to get a thermal imaging camera or a flir camera. Can be very expensive but there are attachments that can go onto phones.

I get that it's a joke but I'd still like to point out that laptops don't produce nearly as much heat as a mid-level desktop gaming PC. They don't get stupidly hot because of the amount of heat they produce but rather because they are extraordinarily bad at getting rid of it.

This, the beefiest laptops eat around 300w, so that's 300w of heat to dissipate

So I noticed that my X7 pro overheated a bit too much during long gaming sessions and throttled because of that, so I grabbed one of those small fans and strapped it to the back of my case. Suprise suprise I gained around 5-10c thanks to that going from 44c on the battery to 36-37c with no more throttling even after hours of playing.

About 2 years ago I bought a Lenovo legion 5 pro when I started school. Recently, it has gotten, very hot, concerningly hot. Idle ranges between 50-60 F, and under load throttles at 86 F. I have cleaned the fans, and propped the laptop up on a stand. My room does range between 75 F and 86 F though. Other than making my room colder, I don't what else to do to make my laptop cooler. Here are the specs:

Processor

  • Intel Core i7-11800H Processor (8C / 16T, 2.3 / 4.6GHz, 24MB)

Graphic Card

  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050

Memory

So yeah we all struggle with heat, laptops are always hot, not made for gaming yadda yadda, well you've already probably heard of this and probably have one, but if you don't, get is ASAP, Llano V10 laptop Cooler with (or without) RBG lighting and 4 USB ports, man, this thing looks great, is pretty quiet at 1200 and keeps you laptop really cool by forcing the air from below into your laptop, you can even feel the air coming our form your keyboard, perfect for keeping it cool while idle but even better for intense gaming sessions, I kid you not, bought one for each of my Asus Tuf, an F15 i5 11th gen RTX2050 and an F15 i7 13th gen RTX4070 and wow, idle temps went down from 50-56 to 32-37, gaming temps went down from 84-90+ to 65-75 tops, it has a few down sides, like needing it's own power source, a bit bulky, the RGB sux, but overall I would never part with these, the peace of mind I get knowing that I will prolong the life of my investment is priceless.

Can ya tell me more about the power requirements for the cooler? Do you mean it has to be plugged in to a wall socket? ,what about max RPM?

And also can you mention the price in USD? I looked for few but unfortunately it's really expensive when it arrives to my country (Currency difference + Shipping). Thanks!

1 upvotes on reddit
Eduhudtwalcker · OP · 6 months ago

Sure, well power requirements are just a regular wall socket, it comes with it's own power adapter, like the one on your router ?? Something similar and a USB A to C cable to connect to the PC (not required) and that is just for data transfer in case you wanna use the extra USB ports it has in the back, now the RPM it can go all the way to 3500 but then it becomes very noisy, I would only recommend that speed for very intense gaming and actually it's not even needed, I usually keep it at 1200 (very quiet) and ramp it up to 1500 or 2000 when gaming and it keeps everything very cool and at acceptable temps.

As far as where to buy it, I've bought these two that I have directly from Amazon, it ships for free to my country (Peru) and the total price is like $87 I think, that's the lowest I've seen it at anywhere, not sure about shipping fees to other countries though, this is the link from where I bough it.

I dont blame you. I once considered mounting some external cpu coolers to the laptops heatsink (with some very big cuts into the chassis). On a stroke of luck really I had the GPU fan go out. Just replaced with two off brand fans (better performing) and re pasted with some Corsair TM30. Running the new type fans on 100% with the new paste and the cleaning (you wouldnt believe how dirty it gets in there, even while raised). Im not seeing anything over 80 deg C at full load. A far change from the 95-96 that was consistent. What I did notice though is that the time it takes to come up to max temp is ALOTTT longer. Maybe the factory paste wasnt adequate or possible it was just cheap. Or the heatsink wasnt pasted in a way to allow for proper heat transfer. But Its certainly working better now. Mind you this is with full boost (Set to 112 watts), power plan cranked to 100% and all relatable settings. GPU is only pushed 15mhz past clock. But its Ghelper is it even really actually adjusting the clock LOL :)

Trying to squeeze as much performance as possible out of a laptop actually feels good, lol. Talking about fans after few months from owning the laptop, one of the fans started making noise. So, I sent it in under warranty, and they replaced the fan.

Exactly a week after that, my laptop was at 55% charge, so I plugged in the charger—but to my surprise, it wouldn’t charge. I tried multiple fixes, even went as far as resetting Windows, but nothing worked. I didn’t have a multimeter at the time to check the charger voltage, so I submitted my laptop again, this time with the charger. The next day, they called and told me the charger had no issues, but they needed to replace the entire motherboard because something in the charging circuit had fried. Apparently, they don’t even bother fixing the motherboard—they just swap it out.

So, when the time came, I picked up my laptop after a week again and went home. Since they had reset Windows, I had to reinstall all the drivers. To my surprise, the NVIDIA driver kept throwing an error: “No NVIDIA GPU detected.” Meanwhile, AMD installed just fine. After multiple attempts and another Windows reset, nothing worked. At that point, I knew the issue had to be with the motherboard they installed.

So, for the third time, I took my laptop back. The next day, they called and confirmed that the replacement motherboard was faulty, and they needed to order a new one. Thankfully, all of this was covered under warranty.

Now, my laptop’s warranty has expired. But despite all the issues, I still love this machine, XD. Two years later, everything works perfectly, and I haven’t had a single problem since.

I know this was long—sorry! :)

As long as it doesn't get TOO hot, it shouldn't be an issue.

If you've tried the fan pads, the only other things really left are other ways to increase air flow, like directed external fans to push hot air away or opening it up and upgrading the heat sinks. Both would be cheap.

opening it up and upgrading the heat sinks

You can do that on a laptop? I've wanted to do that with mine but I can only find replacements for the ones that are already in there.

3 upvotes on reddit
D
Dioxid3 · 2 years ago

Not feasibly, really. Laptops have often a closed copper-cast system, that cools the CPU and GPU or both. It’s just a different shaped heat dissipation from a heatsink seen in desktops, but due to size constraints is made a little differently.

If you are experiencing overheating, however, cleaning fans with compressed air and changing thermal paste will help a lot. Changing the heatsink itself… well, ymmv, but I am pretty confident that unless the stock is utter shit, you won’t see many improvements.

If instability occurs, software like MSI Afterburner (which works for many brands) can help you by e.g. limiting the GPU power draw. Less power = less heat.

Laptops aren’t horribly complicated to pull apart, but deffo label and photograph every step if it is your first time with said laptop

15 upvotes on reddit
Z
Zebov3 · 2 years ago

Like others said, taking it apart and messing with heat sinks is a pretty tricky procedure to do for little benefit. If you've had your laptop for years, it might make sense though... Maybe. When was the last time you blew the thing out? It could just be a ton of dust buildup.

I've never used the fan pads, but keeping it off of soft things (beds, pillows, blankets, etc) so the air can flow helps. I've used some chair leg pads on the corners to give more space for air to move, which even though they were only like 1/2", worked surprisingly well. Put a little fan directed underneath, going across (left to right/right to left). I've had laptops that vented out the back and you don't want to accidentally push all the air back in.

Other than that, put it near an AC? I'd really check to see how hot it was actually getting before doing anything crazy.

1 upvotes on reddit
three9 · 2 years ago

The short answer is no, they're just saying to replace the thermal paste on the heatsink/processor. If you've had a laptop for awhile that's been working hard then sometimes the thermal paste that's applied from the factory dissipates and heat transfer will no longer be optimal.

Big problem in the methodolgy: the time the stress test was run for wasn't specified. Overheating for laptops becomes a problem when the surrounding environment of the laptop (wooden table) is heated over a long period of time, causing the air to be preheated by the environment before entering the laptop. In my case this takes around 1h30 before the laptop starts throttling hard. The fan pads totally eliminated the problem, the table was still at room temperature regardless of duration.

Professional_Pie_894 · 2 years ago

Thanks for the update and clarification. You are very likely right. In my experience, what I've found is to get one of those laptop raisers and make sure the air intake is not blocked. That is good enough for me 99% of the time as I basically only do office work o n my PC.

Underclock it a bit, or set the Driver software to slightly lower aim values (heat, Power, FPS)

Clean it (if you are technically able to do that)

Replace the cooling paste with Liquid metal (if you are technically able to do that)

The trays you already use

If that all doesn't work you need a Desktop with decent cooling

Depends on how comfortable you are opening the case. The heatsink fins should be cleaned & the thermal paste on the cpu & gpu should be replaced with new paste. One more thing is to get an external monitor & keyboard and actually place the laptop upside down. That way the fans are always clear for more airflow.

I can tell you probably won't be comfortable opening it up.

Instead, go buy a can of compressed air. Spray it into any vents you have on your laptop.

Good chance this will fix your problem.

It's kind of weird but I find it efficient and cheap than the typical laptop cooler stand, because the typical laptop cooler has a low rpm fan and does have a small wind coming out, unlike a mini fan like this it has a strong wind and high rpm and can even last long since you can clean it up. What's your thoughts?

Gosh, this reminds me so much of my old setup with my Acer Aspire 5 that I forced and overclocked to do gaming. But there's no filter though, and I had to do cleaning very 6 months.

Nowadays, with my Lenovo LOQ, I have an Ilano Laptop Cooler. Has a filter, and drops temps by a whole lot, worth the investment. Especially that's its already summer in my area, I really needed this one.

IET and FlyDigi laptop cooler will work just as well.

Any of the Ilano, IET, or the Fly Digi laptop cooler. Any other cooler other than those brands is not worth getting.

All reviews only show that thing running at max and being really loud. How well does that thing work at lower settings that dont require noise cancelling headphones?

You can stick to lower RPM. Still way bettee than nothing. Still at least -10°C

My first thought is you’re going to be cleaning way more dust out of your laptop than you would if you used a high quality cooling stand with a filter. It’s always worth paying a little extra to protect your investment.

Cooler. The monitor will cost a lot more and the earlier you’re able to start managing those temperatures, the longer your laptop will last.

how to improve laptop cooling

Key Considerations for Improving Laptop Cooling

  1. Clean the Vents: Dust accumulation can block airflow. Regularly clean the air vents using compressed air to remove dust and debris.

  2. Use a Cooling Pad: A laptop cooling pad can help dissipate heat by providing additional airflow. Look for one with built-in fans for enhanced cooling.

  3. Elevate the Laptop: Keeping your laptop on a flat surface can restrict airflow. Use a stand to elevate it, allowing for better ventilation underneath.

  4. Manage Background Processes: Excessive CPU usage can lead to overheating. Close unnecessary applications and processes to reduce load and heat generation.

  5. Thermal Paste Replacement: If you're comfortable, consider replacing the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. Over time, thermal paste can dry out, reducing its effectiveness in heat transfer.

  6. Check Power Settings: Adjust your laptop's power settings to a balanced or power-saving mode to reduce heat generation during less intensive tasks.

  7. Monitor Temperature: Use software tools to monitor your laptop's temperature. If temperatures exceed safe limits (typically above 85°C), take action to cool it down.

Recommendation: Start with simple solutions like cleaning the vents and using a cooling pad. If overheating persists, consider more advanced options like thermal paste replacement or checking for hardware issues. Regular maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan of your laptop and improve performance.
