When I post on social media from our business accounts it seems really hit and miss, but all I want is some comments from our customers or a tweet back to gauge a response.

We can see the post has been seen by X amount of people, but the only time we get comments is if we do a prize draw.

After weeks of long work, I've finished my website and I have my ads ready. But i need to build social media engagement just in case potential customers check my social media. I created an account on Facebook and IG and in an effort to cut corners I bought 500 followers on IG but my engagement is out of wack and I can't get any likes on my posts.

Increasing Engagement on a Low-Performing or New Social Media Account (Instagram & Facebook)

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve noticed is the lack of a strategic approach to social media content. Many businesses post randomly without a clear objective. I experienced this firsthand while managing social media for a Hotel business. During my initial assessment, I observed that they were posting a mix of unrelated content—such as food photos from their in-house restaurant and occasional promotions—without any consistency. As a result I’ve seen an average of just 5-6 likes per post with little to no engagement.

To turn things around, I focused on three key content strategies, aligning them with how people use social media. In most cases, users engage with content for entertainment, information, or knowledge. Additionally, there’s a fourth category: raw, minimally edited footage that people watch purely out of curiosity or relaxation. For instance, I might come across a video of someone cooking fish in a remote, scenic location. I’m not watching it because I plan to do the same, but it provides a sense of relaxation, especially with soothing background sounds.

Execution Strategy for a Hotel Industry Account

Since this was a hotel business, I structured the content accordingly:

1. Informational Content: One of their unique selling points was late-night check-ins without extra charges. Instead of paying for a full day, guests only paid for the duration of their stay (with a minimum required payment). To make this engaging, I used creative hook lines like, “Before booking your next trip, check this out…” followed by a breakdown of how their flexible check-in policy worked and how that can lower the travel cost.
2. Entertainment Content: I created and posted memes related to travel and hotel experiences. These memes combined video clips that delivered humor and relatability to the audience they experienced in a funny way.

Initially, I experimented with different content types, analyzing what performed best. In this case, memes and informational content stood out, so I began posting them in a structured ratio. This consistency was crucial because social media algorithms prioritize accounts that repeatedly post content within a specific niche. By doing this, I trained the algorithm to recognize the account as an authority in the hospitality space, ensuring that our content reached the right audience.

Results Achieved

With this approach, I saw a significant shift in metrics. In just two months of consistent and frequent posting, engagement increased by nearly 20%.

After managing the account for six months, the results were remarkable:

• A 600% increase in followers
• A 70% increase in engagement, especially in comments
• A significant rise in website traffic that resulted out from a well-planned content funnel

The Role of Hashtags in Organic Growth

Another key factor in achieving better reach is training social media algorithms to understand post context. Instead of using a mix of random hashtags, it’s essential to be specific.

For example, while managing the hotel’s social media, I had to differentiate between posts about rooms, banquet halls, and the on-site restaurant. Instead of using broad, mixed hashtags, I kept them highly relevant. A restaurant-related post only included restaurant-specific hashtags, such as #bestrestaurant or #veganrestaurant. This helped the algorithm categorize the post correctly and target the right audience.

Additionally, checking the popularity of hashtags is crucial. Using hashtags with millions of posts can cause content to get lost in the crowd. Instead, selecting medium-range hashtags increases visibility and reach.

The Power of Organic Growth

This strategy has helped me grow multiple accounts and generate sales while boosting brand awareness—all without relying on ads. An organic approach builds a strong and lasting brand presence, leaving a lasting impression on customers. Though I somehow used the boosting feature but very occasionally.
