How to Play Blackjack at a Casino

TL;DR Learn basic strategy, avoid 6:5 payout tables, and understand table etiquette. Use strategy cards if needed.

Understanding Basic Strategy

To play blackjack effectively, familiarize yourself with the basic strategy, which involves making decisions based on your hand and the dealer's visible card [1:1]. The goal is to get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Basic strategy charts are available online and can guide you on when to hit, stand, double down, or split [1:4]. You can even bring a physical strategy card to the table, as casinos typically allow them [1:1].

Table Etiquette and Payouts

Proper table etiquette is important for a smooth experience. Avoid handing cash directly to the dealer and learn the flow of the game [5:1]. When choosing a table, look for those offering a 3:2 payout for blackjack rather than 6:5, as this significantly affects your potential winnings [5:3][5:4]. A 3:2 payout means you win $150 on a $100 bet if you hit blackjack, whereas a 6:5 payout only gives you $120 [5:4].

Avoiding Common Mistakes

New players should avoid common mistakes such as doubling down on hard 12, splitting 10s, or hitting on a high hand like 20 [4:4][4:5]. Learning these nuances will help minimize losses and improve your gameplay. If you're unsure, stick to the basic strategy until you gain more confidence [4:6].

Managing Expectations and Bankroll

While winning is possible, it's crucial to manage your expectations and bankroll. Casinos have a house edge, meaning they profit in the long run [3:2]. Set a budget for how much you're willing to lose and walk away when you're ahead [2:3]. Remember that gambling should be viewed as entertainment with stakes, not a guaranteed way to make money [3:2].

Using Apps and Resources

Consider using apps or online resources to practice before heading to the casino. These tools can simulate hands and help reinforce the correct plays [1:2]. Websites like Wizard of Odds provide detailed information on rules and strategies for various games, including blackjack [5:1].

Hey yall; I’m slowly learning card games so I thought I’d try Blackjack at my local casino. Is is easy as it seems? Just don’t go over 21? I’m not trying to win big I just want to understand better unless I’m just overthinking it

Gain a basic knowledge of blackjack using apps. On iOS or Android you can practice strategy with.

https://blackjack-strategy.co?r=a

It deals you starting hands with the possible options. You choose, it tells you if you’re right or wrong (and shows the correct play). It tracks your streak up to 55 before resetting. The best part is it doesn’t give you the hit. This trains you to recognize the statistically correct play and ignore results. At the table you can always deviate if you want, you’ll know the right move. And don’t worry about the other players. A 12 against a dealer's up card 3 is a hit. Most don't know it

Extremely basic description.

Your goal is to be closer to 21 than the dealer.

  1. Always imagine the dealers bottom card is a 10.

  2. You should also expect the next card to come out to be a 10.

Now the the dealer will always stay if they have 17 or better (other rules can change this but we wont get into that right now)

So lets say if you have a 13, and the dealer is showing an 8. We are going to ASSUME they have 18 because the bottom card is most likely a 10. We know we are most likely going to bust with our 13 because the next card is probably a ten. (again very basic description). BUUUUUT 13 doesnt beat 18 so we might as well try to be closer to 21 than them.

Now if the dealer is showing a 2-6 we know they absolutely will take a card. Because we are assuming at most they have a 16 and they have to hit until they have 17 or better, or bust.

So if you have a 12, and the dealer is showing a 6. We are assuming the dealer has a 10 under. And the next card will be a ten. There is no reason for you to try and get closer to 21, when are pretty sure the dealer will go over 21! (Bust)

Now if you have 10 or 11. You want to take advantage of these moments because they are strong hands and can help you get more money on the table. Because we are assuming the next card is a 10 if you have an 11, always double. If you have a 10, double against any card except for an ace or face.

You can look up basic strategy charts, but id honestly recommend just watching a couple youtube videos and watching people record there play.

It's easy once you learn the basic strategy, and it's really fun! You can Google the basic strategy charts and when to hit/stand/double, but as far as playing at a table you might get weird looks if you split 10s.

Ya, I've been wanting to play also, but... if you dont follow the "written rules" it seems like everyone else at the table gets pissed at you. I'd be like Screw you, I'm not trying to make you money, but I dont feel like getting into a fight over it

I was at a table once and a guy refused to split aces. All the players and the dealer told him to split. He refused. The dealer took everyone’s money that hand. Everyone, me included, got up and left. Fight? Nah, just really pissed off.

Lmao yeah the table etiquette is real but honestly most people aren't gonna say anything unless you're doing something really dumb like hitting on 20 or something. Just learn basic strategy beforehand and you'll be fine - the angry old guys are usually just mad they're losing their rent money anyway

Is it really that bad? I only played in Asian casinos so far so blackjack isn't that popular of a game, but the other players on my table are always horrible. Was playing free bet last time and they never once used a free double, they just hit on 11.

Personally I don't care at all though, don't believe other players choices influence me or it will even out in the long term.

You want to beat the dealer. So if you have 12 and the dealer ends up with 22 then you win. It’s import to base your decision on what the dealer showing card is. Lookup “blackjack basic strategy” and follow that. You can even get a credit card sized version of the strategy table to take with you. The casino won’t care. You can’t have it on your phone as they won’t allow any electronic to be used at the table.

$40 to $1000 first time in casino!! Playing blackjack

Posted by Acrobatic-State8279 · in r/gambling · 1 month ago

A part of me wonders if the Casinos when they scanned my ID knew im new and have complete control of all the cards and rigged it where I win huge to turn me into an addict how crazy this was.

I pull out $40, go to blackjack put it all in and double to $80.

I leave the casino a winner and come back and put it all on baccart and double it to $160.

I leave for the day.

Next day im itching for poker.

I turn it into $300 and go down to $51. Im like I have no way of getting back to $300 let me go to blackjack. I shove it all in and double.

I keep playing small and doing all in doubles and I get it up to $800!

I take a break and come back. I lose lose lose and an insane $150 split to $300 total beating. Im down to $300.

I take another 20 min break and im in a good mood again. I dont care too much about the money because everything is budgeted and I can afford losing it.

I pull out $300 cash turn it into chips and fire it all in at once blackjack.

I get a blackjack!!! Turns out the table had shitty blackjack payout but whatever.

I play some more and I shove my $600 in again and I get another blackjack!!!

I leave with $1250 after I gave some tips out.

I come back and play with $200 and I end up doubling up then losing it and I leave the casino with $1000 cash. All started with $40

Never tip the dealers. They aren’t the reason you made the money. YOU won the money, don’t give any of it back to the casino.

Nah the casino didn’t do it. You became an addict on your own. The key is walking out when your up. Do not!! I repeat, DO NOT expect to have all trips go like this. You will have times that your bankroll just goes to 0 in minutes. That is when you walk out. No ATM! Also, that 1k is not ammunition for more casino visits. That is the frame of mind that lets the casino win.

How do people actually win at casinos? Or is it all just smoke and mirrors?

Posted by TransitionSimple9340 · in r/AskCasinoExpert · 1 month ago

Hey folks, total beginner here and trying to wrap my head around how casinos work in real life.

Is there any real chance of winning, or is it basically just paying for entertainment like going to the movies?

Some questions I’ve been thinking about:

– Do people actually walk away with profit?

– How does payout work if you win something big?

– Do casinos just have piles of cash sitting around for this?

Also, how does something like blackjack or slots compare to buying a lottery ticket? I know it’s all chance, but is there any game where you’ve got a legit shot?

Not looking for “how to get rich quick” tips, just honest opinions and maybe some stories from anyone who’s had a lucky (or unlucky) run.

Good question — and you’re not the only one thinking about this. Yes, sometimes people leave ahead. But long term, the house keeps its advantage. Think of it as paying for entertainment, with a chance to come out on top.

Profit can happen, especially in games with strategy like blackjack. Large payouts are covered with checks, transfers, or split payments. Odds: slots beat lottery, blackjack/baccarat beat slots — but luck rules.

Bottom line: it’s entertainment with stakes. Some games give slightly better chances, but luck runs the show.

Casinos definitely pay out, I’ve seen people cash big. My uncle hit a $20k slot jackpot in Vegas, they gave him a big check and some in cash right there. Problem is he spent half of it back in the same weekend. That’s how they still win in the end.

First time at a casino,

Posted by DayTripper556 · in r/blackjack · 2 months ago

It was my first time at a casino and my first time playing blackjack, it’s the only game I wanted to play because it’s very fun. idk the rules exactly but for some reason they asked me all sorts of questions, don’t get me wrong I look like I’m 12 I showed my id more than I placed bets, but the big guy walking around the tables dressed in a suit kept asking me questions and watching me play. It was weird and threw me off while I was trying to focus on what card I thought would be dealt, they also didn’t like how I kept putting my high chips in my cup holder under my drink and leaving some quarters on the table to play hands with, they also kept coming over every time I sat hands out while others played and then would come back when I would start betting again, don’t get me wrong I went in with 100 got it up to 600 cashed out 5 and went back to playing with quarters made another 500, lost 300 on a stupid hard 12 I doubled on. And called my losses at 700, is it always like this, is this something to worry about? I plan on going back this weekend with the 700 I won, since it’s just fun money I don’t have to work for, I played for maybe an hour total across 4 tables. Should I go there or should I try a different casino? Or will they all be stingy

And why do they get mad if I sit out a hand, they seem very stingy towards me but not the guy who was up 8k and then left, they also kept calling black action every time I bet an 100 chip, even though there were guys there betting 1.5k and winning and they said nothing.

Blackjack apprenticeship. Site that give information and training for people looking to count cards. But that's a big investment of both time and money.

Like some people already suggested, i would highly recommend just learning basic strategy and learning it well. Short of counting cards, that's the best thing to do to minimize loss.

I have wanted to play blackjack at the casino in Vegas but do not want to slip into any traps because I am fairly new to blackjack.

Besides my experience playing blackjack in resident evil 7's 21 DLC, I have no experience in blackjack.

What should I look out for while playing blackjack pro? I heard something about the house always wins because they can see the cards?

As long as you get paid 3:2 on blackjack it’s all pretty similar. Look, unless you spend a few dozen hours practicing, memorizing, understanding, etc. you’re not going to learn to count, so play 3:2 and expect to lose whatever you’re willing to play with.

Have fun! Take a basic strategy card for the rules you’re playing, some gift shops have them or just hand write on paper from Wizard of Odds. You should be losing about $5 for every $1000 wagered if you play according to the strategy card for the correct rules and are playing 3:2, so get them for as many free drinks as you can and you’re probably breaking even!

Brief-Percentage-193 · 2 years ago

You want to find one that says 3:2 instead of 6:5. This is the ratio that you get if you get blackjack. An example of why this matters is assume you bet $100 and get a blackjack. If you are at a 3:2 table you win $150 and if you are at a 6:5 table you win $120.

All of those things are good advice, and that link to the 3:2 games and their rules is very helpful!

It wont improve your numbers but if you've never played in a casino before I'd read up on basic table games etiquette on Wizard of Odds or similar. It just makes life a lot easier and the flow of the game more fun. Nothing going to get you labeled as a ploppy faster than doing something like trying to hand your cash directly to the dealer or similar.

I have been playing Blackjack in an online casino exclusively since March. I am playing it like a business, tracking it like an investment on a spreadsheet. I have a return on investment of 18% and a bankroll appreciation of over 1000%. What an amazing game. I am approaching this with a short term hit and run approach. I am playing mostly the Random Number Generated games but have started adding in the occasional real dealer session. I have been with them for years. They pay out fast too. The last time I withdrew about 2 am and had my money by the time I woke up around noon.

Oh boy, you are making the biggest rookie mistake you could possibly make with online gambling. That mistake is thinking you can make money off of this. You have simply gotten very lucky, that's it. There is no method to beating the online casinos.

Your sample size is not enough. You haven't even gotten 1000 hands documented and you're assuming that's going to extrapolate out into the future. I got news for you, IT WILL NOT. Proper blackjack simulations are played out over 100s of thousands of hands and the math is not in your favor.

The issue with your "method" is that there is going to come a session where you will get absolutely COOKED. There will be a session that you will win almost zero hands. But because you are so convinced you can make money, you will probably chase (thinking you'll win it back) and then all of the money you won will get wiped out. It is statistically guaranteed with enough hands played that you will hit a horrendous stretch of hands.

The only thing that has happened here is that you've gotten extremely lucky and started documenting during some positive blackjack variance. The negative variance is coming and it will be very ugly for you.

  1. Learn basic strategy. You can use a strategy card at the table, no one will care.
  2. Game selection - play on games that have favorable rules for the player, such as 3:2 BJ payout, stand on all 17s, double on any 2, double after split, resplitting Aces, and late surrender. Don't play tables with 6:5 BJ or continuous shufflers.
  3. Ace-Five count. This is the easiest count and will give you a very slight edge.
  4. Knock-Out count. Easiest "complete" count to learn.

If you do count, your bet spreads will give you away. If you're playing significant stakes, you will eventually get backed off or barred.

This. I’d rather someone play with a strategy card than not know what the hell they’re doing. I see a lot of people not knowing what to do on a 12 v 10 and they just sit there until the table tells them what to do.

Turned $25 into $1000 within five minutes.

Posted by SparkyJet · in r/blackjack · 3 months ago

After losing almost all of the $500 I brought, I was heading towards the exit, but I stopped at an empty blackjack table with my last green chip. I bet $25 and was dealt blackjack. Parlay the winnings and got dealt another blackjack.

The dealer was a bit mystified, but chuckling at my good luck. I went all in again and won the hand. By that point I was at $250 within three minutes.

Without hesitation, I put all the chips in the betting circle. The dealer raised her eye eyebrow, but I nodded and told her to deal. I was dealt a 10 versus the dealers eight. Didn’t have any more to double so I hit. Received a nine for 19, which was enough to beat her 18.

Now with $500 in chips in front of me, the dealer said I should go. By this point, there was someone who was about to buy in. He offered to wait, which I accepted. I put the entire stack into the circle again.

Dealt 11 versus a dealer 10. Couldn’t double but I confidently said it’s no problem because the 10 was coming. I hit and receive a king for 21. Sure enough the dealer had 20 underneath.

I colored up the thousand dollars, and the dealer said she had never seen anyone have such a hot streak and a very short time. She told me I was smart for splitting with the casinos money.

Sometimes the blackjack gods can be great.

I’m trying to follow your math. Hand #1: bet $25, BJ pays 3:2 = $37.5 + initial $25 = $62.5 Hand #2: Bet all $62.5, BJ pays 3:2 = $93.75 + initial $62.5 = $157.25 Hand #3: Bet all $157.25, win $156.25 = $312.50 (Not $250) Hand #4: Bet all $312.5, win $312.6 = $625 (Not $500) Hand #5: Bet all $625, win $625 = $1,300 (Not $1,000)

It is possible to win 5 hands in a row and 2 consecutive BJ can happen but it seems the dealer shorted you somewhere.

Very much like many horses I have bet on that while in contention coming down the stretch suddenly began running backwards. The others are still running at the time of this post (albeit very slowly).

Just google a "Blackjack Strategy Chart" and figure out how to interpret it. It will tell you when to hit, stand, split, or double.

This is Fallout New Vegas. Arguably the best game in the Fallout series. Having higher luck will help you win more, but you should look up basic strategy to better learn how to play. You can apply it to casinos in real life as well.

Having higher luck will help you win more

This is genuinely a huge understatement. With max luck in F:NV you pretty much can't lose at blackjack. Double down on 20, it doesn't matter, the next card will be an ace 90% of the time.

Save before every hand, bet as much as you can every time, and reload the game if you lose.

how to play blackjack at a casino

Here are the key considerations for playing blackjack at a casino:

  1. Understand the Objective: The goal of blackjack is to beat the dealer by having a hand value closer to 21 without going over. A hand value of 21 is the best possible hand.

  2. Know the Card Values:

    • Number cards (2-10) are worth their face value.
    • Face cards (Kings, Queens, Jacks) are worth 10.
    • Aces can be worth 1 or 11, depending on which value benefits your hand more.
  3. Basic Gameplay:

    • Each player is dealt two cards, and the dealer has one card face up and one face down.
    • Players can choose to "Hit" (take another card) or "Stand" (keep their current hand).
    • Players can also choose to "Double Down" (double their bet and take one more card) or "Split" (if they have two cards of the same value, they can split them into two separate hands).
  4. Dealer's Rules: The dealer must hit until they reach a hand value of 17 or higher. Some casinos require the dealer to hit on a "soft 17" (an Ace and a 6).

  5. Winning and Payouts:

    • If your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer's, you win and typically receive a payout of 1:1 on your bet.
    • If you get a blackjack (an Ace and a 10-value card), you usually receive a payout of 3:2.
    • If you bust (go over 21), you lose your bet.
  6. Etiquette:

    • Use hand signals to indicate your decisions (e.g., tapping the table for a hit, waving your hand for a stand).
    • Be respectful to the dealer and other players.

Recommendation: Familiarize yourself with basic strategy charts, which outline the best statistical moves based on your hand and the dealer's upcard. This can significantly improve your chances of winning. Also, start with lower stakes tables to practice and build confidence before moving to higher stakes. Enjoy the game!
