TL;DR
Clothing for the Climate
Las Vegas has a desert climate, which means hot days and cooler nights. Packing layers is essential to adapt to the temperature changes [1:3]. During the day, opt for light, breathable clothing such as shorts and loose shirts, especially if you plan on walking the Strip
[5:1]. Comfortable shoes are a must due to the extensive walking involved
[1:2]. For nighttime or indoor activities, consider bringing a warm jacket or sweater, as casinos and convention centers can be heavily air-conditioned
[3:3],
[5:4].
Dealing with Dryness
The dry climate of Las Vegas can be harsh on your skin, especially if you're coming from a humid environment. It's important to pack moisturizer and lip balm to prevent your skin and lips from drying out [1:1],
[1:4]. Sunscreen is also crucial to protect against sun exposure during outdoor activities
[5:7].
Staying Hydrated
Hydration is key when visiting Las Vegas, particularly in the summer months. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of water throughout the day [5:2]. Some travelers recommend electrolyte packets or coconut water for better hydration
[4:6],
[4:9].
Additional Accessories
Consider packing sunglasses and a hat to shield yourself from the sun while exploring outdoors [5:3]. A parasol or light-colored umbrella can provide additional shade if needed
[2:11]. Evenings can get chilly, so having a sweater or jacket handy will ensure comfort when transitioning between indoor and outdoor environments
[5:4].
General Tips
Plan your wardrobe based on your itinerary. If you’re attending events like weddings or shows, include appropriate attire. Keep in mind that distances between locations on the Strip can be deceivingly long, so plan transportation accordingly to avoid excessive walking in the heat [2:6].
I’ll be spending most of the holidays with family in Las Vegas. I have never been to LV before, i live in the Philippines (tropical climate). I’m figuring out what outfits I should be packing for the December climate, like jackets and short etc. Any ideas would help.
Wear comfortable shoes, there's a LOT of walking in Vegas
You’d think that were common sense. I mean, I think it’s great advice. But I married into a Filipino family and I swear, they would all wear “thongs” (flip flops) on a 15 mile hike through red rock without blinking an eye.
Layers
Best advice here besides “check the weather app”. There’s a 20° difference between daytime highs and night time lows, and the highs are comfortably warm enough for lighter clothes. Unless every day features multiple trips back to the hotel room for a wardrobe change, having layers is key.
Nice warm jacket. And fall/winter outfits. it will be cold for you if you’re in tropical climate. (It’s also cold for most (Las Vegas people). Also bring lotion and chapstick. Skin of your hands might crack as It’s a very dry climate. Lips incase they dry too.
I was also going to post about brining moisturizer and lip balm. OP coming from a very humid climate to a very dry climate, they will for sure need good moisturizer.
Google the weather for the time of your trip. Plan accordingly
It'll be cold 🥶
Like put on 1 layer of jacket cold
Wanting to share a capsule wardrobe I've worked on and whittled down! I love packing, and I'm pretty proud of this edit
I'm heading to Las Vegas and surrounding towns for 1.5 weeks for the first time.
I know that black will be hot, but it's my color of choice and makes up basically everything in my wardrobe!
Activities will include a wedding, museums, a bit of strolling and shopping, a pool or two.
Included in image: 3x series of black tops, a slouchy black jacket, a black straw hat, 1x t-shirt dress, a long and flowing floor-length casual dress, a blue slinky dress, black linen shorts, light linen pants, cat eye black sunglasses, an asymmetrical midi dress.
Not pictured:
Good luck in all black in Vegas. I was just there. I'm from Texas so the first time I went to Vegas I thought I'd be fine. Turns out we hug our AC more than I realized in Texas. Figured that out when I tried to walk between two hotels. On the map it looked fine, just one hotel between them. On the ground that hotel turned out to be so huge they have their own tram from one end of the hotel to the other.
Not to discourage you, rather just be aware and plan to take ubers or whatever rather than attempting to stroll unless it is after dark. The sun in Vegas is brutal and there will be a shocking amount of heating coming up from the pavement as well due to all the sun beating down on it all day. Even a couple of hours after darkness fell it was surprising how much heat was coming off the pavement in front of my hotel.
This - last time I was in Vegas in September I was sweating in shorts and a tank top at 11pm just from the 15 minute walk from our room at the Venetian to the Bellagio fountains. All that concrete is a massive heat sink and when the sun is out you are getting heat radiating from every angle. During the day, light colored tops and loose fitting woven clothes are a lot more comfortable than dark colored knits. Consider saving black for the clothes you will wear in the evening, like the long dresses
Thank you, really good info, I really appreciate it. Most of our itinerary it tightly planned with ubers and avoids going outside in those peak times, but this is super helpful and I think swaying me to pack (and first, find) a nice light something.
So true about hotels looking closer than they are. Even google maps distances/walking times can look deceiving!
They definitely can. And the heat is just somehow way more oppressive. I think it has to do with how much concrete there is on the strip. I can walk around downtown Dallas on the hottest day and walk the same distance without a problem. I was absolutely wilting walking that distance in Vegas.
Yeah, maybe throw in a white shirt just in case!
Or snag a parasol in LV
100% this. As someone who lives in Phoenix and loves black, I can’t wear black tops in the summer at all. More like October - March or so. :/
Bring a light color piece/top just in case. :)
Thank you — this is very helpful. Will rummage for a light little something!
I always wear all black in Vegas. Except my swim suits, those are bright colours!
Listen, I’m a musician in southern Arizona, so I spend a lot of time in all black, and my heat tolerance is high. I’m telling you, unless you’re already from the desert, don’t do this. You’re gonna give yourself heatstroke going outside in Vegas like that. If you absolutely insist on wearing all black, really monitor yourself, bring a light colored umbrella for shade while walking outside, and have a large water bottle with you that you’re drinking from regularly. Heat stroke is no joke, and if you get it once, you get it more easily for the rest of your life.
Have you been to the Vegas strip before? Do you know how far apart the casino’s are? It’s about a mile of walking outside with no shade to get from one casino to the next. It’s sort of impossible to limit your time outside while you’re staying there. Unless you’re planning to just stay in the same casino all day long, that plan is going to be a problem.
From one nearly all black dresser to another, I salute you! (I’ve gone to Vegas many times with an all black wardrobe and it was fine.)
I’m traveling to Vegas next week for a trade show. I’ve only been to Vegas once 15 years ago but it was in the summer. I saw that the current nightly temps are in the high 30s and then high 50s at night. But do they usually keep it pretty warm inside places? We have embroidered company shirts we need to wear but they’re short sleeve. I could wear a jacket over but it would cover our company logo so I bought long sleeve shirts to wear under. Just curious how much warm clothing I should pack for the week. Thanks!
My problem at a busy trade show wasn't inside. But outside you have to wait an hour for a bus or taxi, or walk. Then it's really cold. Hope your hotel is attached to your convention center.
We're staying at the Linq and the show is at the Venetian. Looks like a short walk on Google Maps.
Your best option for comfort is going to be layers. Some places are overheated in my opinion. It depends where you want to go. Layers will allow you to move freely from place to place. This week is relatively warm though.
They blast the heater in the winter and I hate it.
Ugh it’s horrible. You walk in outside where it’s nice and chilly and then just cook
Always
It's very dry here so high 50's at night doesn't seem that cold. In the morning when it's in the 30's you need a jacket IMO. The casinos try keep it as comfortable as possible so people will not want to leave. Sorry, convention centers I don't know.
Need to know what are the must have essentials for a week in the heat. What has worked best for everyone? Thanks
bring a sweater.
preferably something in a nice Scottish wool.
Water and comfortable shoes are essentials, no matter the season.
Electrolytes work better than just water. Yes, water is important but electrolytes help keep you hydrated much better
I bought the LMNT electrolyte packets!
I used to use electrolyte package a lot and was told by my doctor to avoid due to high sodium. Coconut water is much better and many stores sell this!
It puts the lotion in the suitcase
lol 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
deodorant
Antiperspirant **
Was in Vegas 6/12-6/17..... Average 105.... Water, Gatorade....
Heading to Vegas for a long weekend.. early June. What the heck do I pack?! We'll be mostly doing stuff on the strip, casual no clubs or anything. The desert heat is a bit intimidating.. appreciate all the tips!!
Thick socks, I know that sounds crazy but you will be walking around A LOT, my friend was just here and he complained how his heals were hurting and getting blisters. Luckily I carry blister patches in my car. You want comfortable shoes, you want light clothes, sometimes long sleeves but thin light fabric offer good protection from the sun, sun glasses, lip balm, sun screen, water, water, water, water, water, water, did I say water? Make sure you have a reusable water bottle, get water from Walgreens and stack it in your hotel room.
If you care more about comfort then looking cool get a boonie hat. I wear one all the time when I'm out doors during the day, it's a life saver.
And don't let me forget water ;)
This may sound odd, but try thick wool socks, designed for wearing with hiking boots. Wool breathes and will protect from the hot pavement.
I was there in the summer when it was like 110. It was dry heat, so it is hot but if you drink plenty of liquid and hop in and out of casinos with AC it is fine. It is actually easier than Florida humid heat. Wear a sun hat outside, carry water.
I’ll take 110 dry in Vegas any day before 85-90 with 90% humidity
Fr. I'm in Philippines right now and every morning waking up in a puddle of sweat. Even 80° with this humidity sucks 😂
Bring a sweater! Believe it or not, the AC can get really freaking cold. Especially if you get too much sun during the day and get the chills at night.
This is great advice!
Light breathable clothes like dry fit stuff work. Believe it or not if you can find some light dry fit stuff that is long sleeve it helps keep the sun off your skin.
Become a master of the shade during the day.
Good shoes for walking with socks.
A hat to keep the sun off your face is good too.
Drink a ton of water... till you pee clear
Your pee shouldn't be clear. That's a sign of drinking too much water.
Unfortunately, I no longer trust my government to publish facts. Here's the breakdown courtesy of Australia.
https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/beattheheat/Pages/urine-colour-chart.aspx
It wasn't meant to be literal. The point is you need to drink lots of water. People randomly pass out in Las Vegas constantly during the summer because they do not understand the heat out here.
Shorts, loose shirts, good and comfortable shoes, top quality socks like Darn Tough.
Drink lots of water and stay in the casinos as much as you can (that's basic desert survival though).
Everything there is farther away than it seems. Don't be shy about taking Uber, taxi, Deuce, whatever.
Start with a suitcase. The rest is on you
You just need your plane ticket home.
You just need one thing, a Lt. Dangle Costume.
Bring extra gas money so you can skip Reno and go to Vegas.
right now its pretty cold and are you going to go up the mountains to the snow or just stay inside ?
Both!
the mountains and the nights are Very cold so be ready If you are casino hopping you might be able to get away with dressing lighter. Reno is not the place where you need to dress up
Hello. We are moving from New England to Las Vegas. We have a large collection of beautiful, high quality winter coats in good condition. Not sure how many and what types to bring? Like, is there any scenario where I would want a full length down parka? How often does one wear a leather coat? A stylish wool coat? Or do people just wear the same winter coat no matter the occasion because it is so rarely cold enough 58 be worth the closet space. We will likely live in Summerlin if it make a difference.
Our winters can get down as low as 30-ish degrees, but since we have very low humidity, it will bite a little more.
If you are going to be here at least for the winter I'd bring those nice coats or keep a couple and sell / donate the rest.
If you live here long enough, I promise you’ll forget that this is warm relative to New England lol😭🤣 You’ll just wake up one morning and be like dang it’s a little chilly outside and it’ll be 50
I’m a native Californian but my partner and I moved here from Michigan.
Every winter here, there is at least a month where I wear my 800 fill down Michigan winter parka while walking the dog in the evening.
Is it necessary? No, I could get by with a few layers instead. But I am glad I kept it because it’s a really nice coat and it’s just nicer being toasty.
Because in Vegas, ANYTHING goes. Even while walking the dog 🤣 Plus, it's always easy to find a nice place, to wear said fancy coat;)
80s in LA feels chilly, compared to Las Vegas.
I have been here for 10 years. I moved here after 20 years in Alaska. I don't like the cold. I was so excited to finally be warm.
Yes, very quickly 80°F becomes not "hot."
Winter-wise, though, I still don't need much more than a zippy hoodie under a light jacket.
Yeah but you need like one coat. Coat closets are also a waste of space here. I wear short sleeves year round
I’m from Illinois. The heaviest I’ve needed is a pea coat and decent pair of gloves
A stylish pea coat and a scarf is perfect for day to day (for like 3 weeks) agreed.
You won't use them unless you travel. It does get cold but you aren't out in the weather for hours sitting in a chair. You are going from your house to your car to a store.
I have 3 depending upon my outfit. Otherwise I have lighter ones.
Been here from Boston in 2009 and never had the desire for that!
It definitely can be, Mt Charleston in the winter and I still use my thick Minnesota jacket
I have a seven night trip to Las Vegas planned. I feel like everything here mixes and matches pretty nicely. It will be a combo of pool days, light hiking (I’m super comfortable in Chacos), daily gym trips, casual and mid level nice meals, shows and hanging with family and friends.
I will likely add one more bra just to ensure I always have a dry one although I suspect laundry will dry quickly there.
Does this look like. Good amount of clothes…too much…too little of something?
I’m hoping to do one carry one plus a personal item. I have some health issues so that will require a bit of PT gear and other health gear that I’ve not tried to one bag with before so I am really trying to nail the clothes so that I have enough but am not taking extra. Any guidance is welcome.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Vegas. I agree you probably don’t want pants, and it’ll be easy to pick up new things there. I would personally want short sleeves instead of tanks to keep the sun off my shoulders. I might swap out one of the tanks for a golf/athletic polo for dining out. I would also not want to hike in sandals because cacti and goat heads, but if you know the risks, you know the risks. I would want a bigger handbag or small backpack so I could throw a water bottle inside.
Thank you for the hiking recommendation. We have prickly pear and sand burrs here so I am used to walking with those around but I will see if I can find the vegetation in the Mt Charleston area and see if I think the Chacos are still a good choice. I hadnt considered that.
I wear tanks year round at home and have always done so in the past in Vegas so I'm good with those. I am very good about sunscreen application. I may throw in a zip up rash guard if I have the space.
I am hoping that my personal item will be a Lug Hopper backpack. Its a mini pack about the size of a Loungefly. Just fits my ipad. That would be good for day use. I might need a larger personal item once I get everything packed though. In any case I will have some sort of backpack. The bag shown for evenings is deceptively large, I can easily fit a water bottle in it.
You may want something dressier, depending where you’re dining this won’t be acceptable for Vegas standards. Check the dress codes
Outside of that it looks awesome and I love your color combos for daytime wear!!!
I have checked dress codes as well as more practical searches on what is acceptable. Thank you for that suggestion. We have chosen a more casual steakhouse than what we were originally thinking and that was the dressiest on our list, I am good per all dress codes now of places we have reservations.
Laundry does dry quickly, especially when ac is blowing. I was there Mother’s Day extended weekend for the Sphere. (Three nights, mid grade hotel, walked everywhere, 7 percent humidity)
Do you plan on being in water? Does your workout/hiking clothing double as swim for you?
Make sure you have more hydration tablets than you think you need. I didn’t feel well hydrated at all while there, and was home three days before I felt right. And I’m not a drinker and didn’t use any THC. I have had heatstroke in the Utah parks. This felt similar.
As for your clothing, check dress codes for restaurants and theaters.
The number looks right, but since laundry is on the table, you could drop the graphic tank, unless that’s your travel day, not packed, outfit.
I brought two skirts and three tops, too. With a pair of Xeros (I was Chaco Z feet for years, 1998-2016, until I got tired of no ground feel). Rinsed the shoes a couple times. Gritty dust and sweat irritated my feet in a way they don’t get in Colorado. I included a cotton over shirt for some extra sun protection and for the concert. Two bras, three undies. They dried overnight. Since I was in a hotel with people other than my partner, I had a 32 degrees dress as lounge and sleepwear. If it had pockets, it would be a perfect desert city dress.
I used to go to vegas regularly it’s just been a long while. I just drink about a bottle of water an hour and I’ve never had hydration issues there. But it’s always a good warning, thank you.
Thank you for confirming laundry would dry quickly in the room. I’m used to sticking to SE, coastal north America these days where the humidity is super high and stuff can take forever to dry, even inside.
We will probably be in the pool most days. The bottoms can double as workout/ hiking/ walking around shorts. This is my usual outfit from about April to October at home so I’m very comfortable in it. All of my other suit tops are a blouse style and take up a lot more room to pack so that’s why I am just going with the one top.
I am technically not good with the dress code to one restaurant since the skirts are actually skirts and technically athelesure. But we aren’t going anyplace super fancy and I’m guessing the will pass.
Graphic tank is travel day. Since I don’t have my usual blouses swim tops I did want something I could throw over my swim top if needed.
I live in coastal Carolina do I’m used to sand. Iirc the sand here at home is way worse than Vegas. That’s why I’m not concerned with the shoes. I used to do Birkenstocks in Vegas, and just life, but swapped out to using Chacos when out and about and my feet like this. I can do a week Birkless though, I’ve done it on other Vacations including Disney with a decent amount of walking.
Not what you asked, but are you personally confortable being underdressed compared to other people? While your outfits may meet most dress codes, you're going to be way more casually dressed that most other people at shows and restaurants. I know for some people that can make them self conscious. My husband ran into this when we were in vegas last year (it was his first time there), and said he wished he had brought some nicer clothes even just for wandering the casinos. If you don't care then obviously a moot point, but I know it can be for some people.
I’d be worried that I would be cold inside. They AC like crazy in Vegas. Maybe add a nice cardigan type top? Also it looks like you have 5 Bottoms which seems like a lot to 7 days. Maybe cut to 1 sleep, 1 swim and 2 skirts/pants? Or can you double swim and sleep?
The blue in the plane outfit is a long sleeved zip up light sweatshirt. I will bring a collapsible bag because I’ve got free checked bags on the way home. So if I shop or have to buy a heavier layer, I am good with getting that home.
The lavender shorts are for sleep. I have the other two darker shorts to rotate daily or, if I need shorts after swimming, I should have a dry pair. I’d be uncomfortable giving one of the darker shorts up.
We will be going out every night so I feel like I need two skirts to rotate since it’s a full week we will be there. Is it terribly uncommon to rotate two looks for a week stretch?
I would suggest changing your plane outfit to go with the bulky sneakers. Pack the smaller sandals instead. Always wear the bulky items on the plane!
By itself, the clothing should even work for an under bag setup. So you should be fine with just a regular carry on when including your PT gear.
You didn't post your other "stuff" so that could be what is taking up the space. Toiletry kit? Are you taking a big laptop? etc. Those are space and weight stealers.
I would add in a very light scarf to change your outfit looks and act as a warmth layer for air conditioning. a light scarf easily stores in a purse when not in use.
Thank you for the scarf recommendation. I have added one!
I have a good bit of my toiletries and other stuff gathered but wanted to get my clothing in line, it just felt like the right order for me. I havent crammed it all into a bag yet because I am waiting for another suitcase to arrive to decide which would work better, what I have or what is coming. I will update once I have decided on the bag with all the stuff. :)
I can see why you made the footwear swap recommendation but the "sneakers" are old Lands End Water shoes. They are much lighter than the Chacos and condense down just as small. Plus Chacos are much better for my feet. The water shoes are only for the gym in case they are sticklers on close toed shoes.
Second on changing the plane outfit. Don’t wear the skirt on the plane; the backs of your thighs might get sweaty from the plane seat.
Going to Vegas this weekend and the weather will be cool-ish. Trying to be casual but cute.
I’m only going for 2 days. Thoughts on any of these?
5 & 7 !!!
I’m kinda shocked everyone is saying #5. Should I do belt or no belt???
Idk if you ever went to Vegas, but when you there you'll see why 5 and 7 were the winners haha For 5 depends, if you use that shirt you maybe don't need the belt , but if you do a more sophisticated shirt or something a Lil fancy you can use the belt. I feel the belt is too much for such a basic shirt In my opinion I would do another shirt ( white ) like a body or something a little fancier and the belt. For 7 just leave it as it is , is perfect!!
Oh and if you have any low heel pointed shoes or fancy sneakers that matches the color for #5 i would def consider it .
Dont wear ratty shoes , it throws off everything
They’re actually new
1, 5, 7. Casual luxe chic
I’d go with 1, 6, and 7! I know it’s only a two-day trip, but outfit #1 gives you that polished yet casual look during the day while also making you stand out as fashion-forward at the casinos, especially if you visit a more upscale one. For walking around, comfort is key, and #6 is perfect for that. The loose-fitting top and exposed shoulders create a fun, effortless vibe. Plus, if you’re packing light, reusing the same pair of pants makes for an easy transition from the casino to exploring the city. And #7 is an absolute must! You look stunning in it, and it fits you perfectly. Whether you’re heading to a concert, a show, or an exclusive nightclub with friends, this outfit is made for nightlife and it definitely deserves a photo op! Have fun on your trip!
One day we’re going to the festival grounds and the other days probably just sight seeing and stuff on the strip
We take a Britta Water filter and aeropress coffee maker (many rooms dont have coffee)
Comfortable shoes, including something you can go hiking in (if you have time). Red Rock canyon and valley of fire are both very cool. Even just walking around the strip can be some distance. I track steps and have had several 15+ mile days in vegas (I like walking).
A case/bag for sunglasses as you'll find yourself wearing them while walking the strip, then not when going inside.
Cash for tipping hotel staff, gambling, etc. ATMs in vegas are super expensive. In general, vegas is expensive.
A couple plastic cups so you can make drinks to walk around with and save a few bucks. Liquor can be bought just about anywhere (gas stations, drug stores, etc)
Clean clothes to sleep in. You'll feel super grubby when getting back to the hotel at night. In general, maybe pack more outfits than you think you'll need.
A couple rolls of Tums.
A list of restaurants you want to eat at, bars to drink at, shows to see. Figure out where they are and make it a point to get to those things and see what you discover on the way. Especially on the restaurants, do some research. Lots of great food in vegas, some really bad and a ton of ho hum. Find the goods that suit your tastes.
More than anything good attitude. I first started going to vegas for work conferences and was kinda meh on it. Thought it was too fake and BS, I was the typical jaded person who'd rather be skiing or at a national park or on a beach. When I sort of let my guard down and readjusted my attitude, it became a really fun place that I've gone too a couple of times just for fun too. There is a LOT to see and do besides the usuals,, there is surprisingly good outdoor activities nearby (hiking, climbing, kayaking, etc), cool attractions like the neon museum, a mob museum, etc. Some of the casinos are littered with art. My wife freaked out when we just kinda stumbled upon a jeff koons sculpture that was worth many millions of dollars, i think there are aome picasos around and lots of dale chilully's work.
Also the more typical vegas stuff (cheesy live music bars, clubs, gambling, pools, walking the strip etc)is really fun if you just sort of buy into the idea that everyone is there to have fun and relax. The people watching is incredibly entertaining, you'll see behavior you can only see in Vegas. Talk to strangers, you'll meet all kinds of people.
Thank you for all the tips!! I didn’t even think about hiking that’s a good idea if time allows for it! I already have too long of a list of things I wanna do lol that I probably won’t get to all of it! I’ll definitely meet and see all sorts of people I’m sure!
