TL;DR To play Minecraft with friends, you can set up a server, use LAN if on the same network, or opt for Minecraft Realms or free server hosting services like Aternos.
Setting Up a Server
One of the most straightforward ways to play Minecraft with friends is by setting up a server. This allows multiple players to join and interact in the same world. You can either host your own server using guides available online [1:2], or pay for third-party server hosting services if you prefer not to manage it yourself
[1:4]. Services like Aternos offer free server hosting but may have limitations such as hourly renewals
[1:4].
Using LAN for Local Multiplayer
If you and your friends are on the same WiFi network, you can easily play together using the LAN feature. Start by opening your Minecraft world, then go to settings and select "Open to LAN" [2:1]. This will allow others on the same network to join your game. It's a simple and effective method for local multiplayer sessions
[2:2].
Minecraft Realms
For a more seamless experience without the hassle of setting up a server, consider using Minecraft Realms. This is a paid service provided by Mojang that offers a persistent online world where you and your friends can play together. It’s particularly useful if you want a reliable and easy-to-manage multiplayer environment [4:5].
Free Server Hosting Options
If you're looking for cost-effective solutions, free server hosting platforms like Aternos and Minehut can be good alternatives [2:3]
[4:3]. While they might not offer the same performance as paid services, they provide a viable option for casual multiplayer gaming without financial commitment.
Troubleshooting Multiplayer Issues
Sometimes, technical issues can prevent you from playing with friends. Ensure both players are using the same version of Minecraft and have enabled multiplayer options [5:5]. If friends aren't appearing in your tab, try restarting your device or checking your internet connection
[5:3]. Additionally, console players need an online subscription to play multiplayer
[5:4].
i play on pc btw
I have been trying to play minecraft with my friends for quite some time and nothing has worked. I know console is really simple but not freaking pc. I have started to play my single player world by myself and I would like to include my friends in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Or pay for realms or third party server hosting company, if you can't/aren't able to do it yourself
You can make a realm or go on server.pro and get a free server that you have to renew hourly
You need to have a server to play with friends.
Me and my brother just got minecraft and we want to do a survival together but we don’t know how can someone help us, thanks!
What game are you playing? Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, or Legacy Edition?
Java edition
To play with someone on your network first, choose a host computer. This computer should be fast enough to play Minecraft, while running a server for other players as well. You then launch the game and click "Single Player" and create a new world or open an existing one. Once inside that world, press the Esc key, then click the "Open to LAN" button. Here, you can choose which game mode to set for the other players.
Once you have set these options, click Start LAN World, and you'll see a message that a local game has been hosted. Other players on the same network who wish to join can now start their game, select Multiplayer, and in a few moments, their computer should automatically detect the game.

If you aren’t on the same network, try using aternos or minehut
You need to make a server to do that
If you are on the same WiFi then you can just start a normal world and then when you load in go to setting and open to lan. You can then modify settings for him or just leave it how it is.
Hi so I just got Minecraft to play with some of my friends in a server. I have never played before so I am wondering if you can answer some of my questions based on what I have heard about the game from them.
(Vote has already ended)
i do, i dont know how to add them, why else would i need this?

I know youre joking lmao
You could get a realm. Or, if you don’t want to pay all that money use aternos. It’s a free server provider. It isn’t the best but it’s the best you can get for free.
Tru tru. It is a big grind. But the outcome is very worth it.
If you're all on the same wifi use lan
Rent a server or realms
If u have too much money- REALMS If u haven't got too much money- servers
Step one:get friends Step two:get minecraft Step three: make sure they all have minecraft Step four: LAN party
Soo my friend and i want to Play Minecraft together. I added him as a friend too. But for some reason he isn't showing up in friend tab.It shows that i have 0 friends. He and me are playing in the same version also. We also enabled multiplayer option but it didn't help. Anyone know how to fix it?
Your game isn't loading right and giving you the old UI, which won't let you join online friends, as it doesn't populate
Try restarting your device and go to a place with better wifi connection, if that doesn't work make sure you and your friend does the same. Let me know if it works!
If you play on console you need an online subscription
It doesn't matter, friend world will shows up.
Not in my experience. they might have fixed it tho
Please tell me how you got that UI back
its most likely a bug or loaded too fast (idk), i got it once on pc and then after exiting and entering play menu back there was no more old ui
Yeah,me too please😭🙏
You have to invite your friend to your world or your friend have to invite you to world
It doesn’t seem like I can invite them to the server I’m on so I was just wondering if there’s any way for them to Join my game or for me to join theirs? We’re both on PlayStation
This, Minecraft.net states: This live event is open to all Bedrock players, and you can bring some friends along or make some new ones in the village square. Yet there is no play along with friends options.
It's pretty bad that this isn't something we can group with friends for. My son and I have been looking forward to this. There's even an "Invite to Game" button but it's greyed out.
We've been trying to land on the same server by hitting Connect at the same time - but no luck.
Estoy exactamente igual y mi hija y yo jugando cada una en un mundo 🥹
They advertise that you can play with friends, yet has zero way to actually play with friends & then any friends you might make, you'd never be able to play it with them again once you both disconnect.
They definitely dropped the ball with this
What a huge misplay. Like how the hell can you not allow people to group up before joining. Like I want to play with my 2 kids, but I can't get in the same server. Soooo stupid.
Yup same here, trying to play with my nephew and all he wants is for us to be able to play it together, seems like such a missed opportunity
Im in the same boat. my two kids have to play alone. its stupid
Same here, very dissapointing.
Exact same situation.... Beyond dumb
Same here.. can't play with my son. Such a disappointment. I know Minecraft personel most likely will not see this, but this is such a ball drop... excellent foresight, folks...
So frustrating, I’m trying to join friends but it’s just not working. Even pressing the play button at the same time is not working
Same issue here. It’s lame
I play Java. My friend wants to play for the first time ever. He’s in a different state. So do I need a server?
You don’t need to have a server there is a mod you can get which enables multiplayer without a server
If you want to play together, yes you'll need a server. There's free hosting sites all over, or you could look into a paid one like Shockbyte or Pebblehost.
If you want to try a LAN world you can try Himachi.
So I got a server and my mods work on my end but not on his. I thought there was a way to have mods on the server so he didn’t need to install them? Or is that just for realm?
all players needs the mods
all players will need to full set of mods that you install on the server. If you're very new to modded multiplayer minecraft i would recommend you guys download curseforge and pick one of the modpacks there.

I mean there is a possibility you could run the essential mod but may be intensive on whoever's hosting. If you're looking for other free alternatives, I'd actually recommend aternos, it's very bare bones but it'll get the job done
Wsg! I recently have found myself with NO MINECRAFT! This is a problem.. I LIKE to play minecraft! 🤔. I primarily play Modded minecraft (create mod is my fav). If you or someone you know has a Modded Minecraft server shoot me an invite. I also have 2 friends who also LIKE minecraft (modded). I don't frequently check reddit but you can friend me on the ol' cord (wonderfulrivet) and ill respond!.
Hi I'm setting up a Vanilla Plus server with few players.

So I want to play minecraft on pc with a friend. What is the best way to do this? Do I need a server for this or is there an alternative like on xbox where you don't need a server?
If you aren’t on the same wifi you can use a program called hamachi by a company called logmein.
I use ngrok but, hamachi may be the best for <5 players
You can host a server on your own pc.
Or you can port forward your singleplayer world
How can I host a server on my own pc?
They just join my world when I’m on it
Realms is the easiest to play with friends
I want to play survival Minecraft Java with a friend that lives far away, but don’t know how
Here are all of your options for playing together

You can also launch your own server if you have access to your routers settings and the correct files
There are lots of options. If only someone had listed them for you.

Setting Up a Server:
