How to Set Up a Minecraft Server

TL;DR

  • You can host your own server using downloadable files from the official Minecraft website or opt for third-party hosting services like MineHut or MCProHosting.

Self-Hosting a Minecraft Server

To set up a Minecraft server yourself, you need to download the server file from the official Minecraft website [1:1]. This process requires a good computer and internet connection [1:2]. Once downloaded, follow detailed instructions available in tutorials or videos online. The setup involves configuring settings, managing whitelists, and potentially dealing with networking challenges such as setting a static IP on your router [4:2].

Third-Party Hosting Services

If self-hosting seems daunting, consider using third-party services that offer Minecraft server hosting. Platforms like MineHut provide free hosting, while others like MCProHosting offer paid options [1:1][3:1]. These services simplify the process by handling technical aspects like server maintenance and uptime, allowing you to focus on gameplay.

Minecraft Realms

For Bedrock Edition players, Minecraft Realms is an easy option. Realms are subscription-based servers hosted by Mojang, offering a straightforward way to play with friends without the hassle of server management [3:2][4:2]. While Realms lack customization compared to self-hosted or third-party servers, they are ideal for casual players looking for simplicity.

Tutorials and Community Support

Numerous resources are available online to guide you through the server setup process. The Minecraft Gamepedia provides comprehensive tutorials [4:1][5:1], and community forums or Discord servers can offer real-time support [2:1]. Engaging with these resources can help troubleshoot common issues like connectivity problems or command usage.

Hello! If you don't know anything about how to create a server, you could pay to have someone host the server for you or host it for free using MineHut (I love it). If you want to set the server up yourself, you can download the Minecraft server file from this website. Once you download the file, it will tell you that it 'could' harm your computer. It will give you two options, keep or discard. Select Keep. After that, you can follow the instructions from this video. The video is for Windows Devices only. If you have Mac or Linux, this guide won't be able to help you. The video should explain the rest. Hope that helps!

Setting up a server The 3 stages of grief when the host refuses to work

Posted by chaidickyou · in r/MinecraftServer · 7 months ago

Setting up a Minecraft server is like assembling IKEA furniture - everything seems easy until you hit that "Server Not Responding" screen. First, you spend hours tweaking settings. Then, you pray to the Minecraft gods, but no, it’s still not working. Finally, you just pretend it was a ‘learning experience.’ Why is it always an adventure?

for me its always easy lol
If you do it locally its easy
And with a host its easy too
Only if you use ssh it may be a bit harder but you can figure it out too

Running Your Own Server

Posted by RunUpRunDown · in r/Minecraft · 9 months ago

Hello all. I've always known that you were able to run your own server on Minecraft (with Whitelists, ect) but I am so ignorant on how to actually set one up, and how to access a lot of commands when in one.

I play Minecraft for Windows (so Bedrock) on PC, and don't use the Minecraft Launcher to do so. Is there an option to just create a server like a realm in the Launcher app? Or is everyone going to some third-party website (like GodLike Hosting, a semi-random one I googled) to access their server?

Please let me know, and if you have the knowledge, could you please comment a more detailed list of the components both hardware and software needed (if any)? I literally don't know anything about them, except that the link in the paragraph above goes to something that might work. And what I know is what shows on that page.

Thank you!

Two ways to do it.

  1. Pay for Realms
  2. Host a local server

Option 2 is pretty easy if you are creating a new world from scratch, but migrating worlds (like from single player with addons, etc.) has so far been a nightmare. And that's coming from a 20yr advanced IT veteran. If you don't know anything about networking and app servers, you probably want option 1.

Realms will be the easiest to go with. Usually 30 day subscription for like $8/mo. Unless you want to do a custom server, there are company’s that’ll host one for you. Or you can host it yourself. Which requires you to do some witchcraft with your internet router... making the ip static.

I use cubedhost and they are fairly cheap for what you are looking for. You wouldnt need very much memory. If you have any questions shoot me a DM, I can either point you a direction or give advice.

Look up aternos, free server hosting 1-2 g of ram as long as your on the server, they have guides and like I said is free. And again it is 24/7 as long as at least one person is on, And there is a que once you stop the server to start it again but it takes like 30 seconds so make on account and give your friends the email and password so you guys can access the world whenever. Happy gaming!

I use Apex Hosting, I have a server running where my brother and I are playing.

We play with version 0.9.5 and we are using the 6GB server option.

They have great software services, you can download the TFG modpack via their server or you can ftp your own modpack.

Their customer support is really great too.

Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Sl33x175 · OP · 4 months ago

So it’s just download and play?

No extra steps?

1 upvotes on reddit
MrPeacock18 · 4 months ago

Yup, select the modpack you want, you restart the server and it will install the modpack and you start playing.

They have a lot of youtube tutorials if you struggle

hidoyouwannaDIE · 4 months ago
  1. If you just updated the server pack via host services then it might have some residue files from 0.7.19 that cause issues for 0.9. My idea is to make a server backup (especially your world file), delete everything and install 0.9 from scratch and then add back your world.

  2. I personally use BloomHost and I find it very good. Pricing is fine for what they provide which is: a dedicated hardware, a good processor, X amount of RAM and disk space (I believe it's SSD?). What that essentially means is that, in case of many more popular hostings they either provide much older/worse hardware or shared service (essentially several different servers running on the same machine as yours). Bloom provides dedicated server (you don't share machinery with other people so better performance), they list all the hardware you will be dedicated in detail and they have a very good community support on their discord. Highly recommend.

I use Aternos, a free online server provider. Allows you to whitelist your friends and let them boot and access the server at will, only operates if people stay online (autoshuts off when people are gone). It runs entirely online, so no need for a buff computer.

Side note, nobody plays on my server with me anymore, could I join yours? Alternatively, you all can join mine! I'm in the steel age.

How to start a server?

Posted by roarbie · in r/Minecraft · 3 years ago

I’ve been playing Minecraft for years. But very, very casually. Usually just a world on my own and mess around. However, recently, I’ve wanted to play online with some friends. It’s easy to start a world and have them join. But how can I make it so they can join said world without me being online?

You have two options here:

  1. You can use a third party server and host your existing world or a new one on there.
I don't know where you and your friend live but there are lots of game server providers out there, even some minecraft only ones

  2. you can host your own server if you have a well enough performing pc or some other pc which you can leave running
If your friends are not on the same network as you, which is the case most of the time obviously, you have to forward a port in your router, which isn't that complicated but since every router has a different UI, I can't tell you exactly how to do it.

I'm hosting my own Minecraft server on a Raspberry Pi btw, can't complain about it.
If you need any more help, please let me know, I'm here to help!

How to set up a Minecraft server

Here are the key steps to set up a Minecraft server:

  1. Choose Your Server Type:

    • Decide between a Java Edition server or a Bedrock Edition server based on the version of Minecraft you want to play.
  2. System Requirements:

    • Ensure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
      • CPU: At least a dual-core processor.
      • RAM: Minimum of 2 GB for small servers; more for larger ones.
      • Storage: Sufficient disk space for game files and backups.
  3. Download the Server Software:

    • For Java Edition, download the server software from the official Minecraft website.
    • For Bedrock Edition, you can find server software from the Minecraft Bedrock server page.
  4. Set Up the Server:

    • Create a new folder on your computer for the server files.
    • Place the downloaded server file in this folder.
    • Run the server file (e.g., java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar server.jar nogui for Java Edition) to generate configuration files.
  5. Configure Server Settings:

    • Open the server.properties file in a text editor to customize settings (e.g., game mode, max players, difficulty).
    • Set eula=true in the eula.txt file to agree to the End User License Agreement.
  6. Port Forwarding:

    • Access your router settings and forward port 25565 (default for Java Edition) to your server's local IP address to allow external connections.
  7. Start the Server:

    • Run the server file again to start the server. You should see a console window indicating the server is running.
  8. Connect to Your Server:

    • Open Minecraft, select "Multiplayer," and add a new server using your public IP address (or local IP for LAN play).
  9. Invite Friends:

    • Share your public IP address with friends so they can join your server.

Recommendation: If you're new to server management, consider using a hosting service like Aternos or Apex Hosting, which simplifies the setup process and provides additional features like automatic backups and mod support. This way, you can focus on gameplay rather than technical details.
