How to Sell Used Clothes

Online Platforms

There are several online platforms where you can sell used clothes, each with its own advantages. Poshmark, eBay, and Mercari are popular choices for selling individual items, especially if they are branded or designer [1:4][1:7][1:10]. Carousell is also recommended for easy transactions and is particularly popular in certain regions [2:2][5:3]. Facebook Marketplace and Instagram can be useful for local sales or decluttering groups [5:1][5:2].

Consignment Stores and Thrift Shops

Consignment stores offer a way to sell clothes with minimal effort, although the payout might not be high unless the items are trendy and in good condition [1:3]. Local thrift shops like Plato’s Closet or Uptown Cheapskate are options for selling clothes without needing to list them individually [1:5].

Bulk Selling Options

For those looking to sell clothes in bulk, some users have suggested listing items as "lots" on platforms like Facebook Marketplace [1:3]. However, finding stores that buy clothes in bulk can be challenging, and it might require reaching out to local businesses or startups that specialize in sustainable fashion [3].

Programs and Services

ThredUp offers a service where you send in your clothes, and they handle the listing for you. However, it's important to note that they charge fees and take a significant portion of earnings, which has led to mixed reviews [1:2][1:6][1:7]. TheRealReal is recommended for designer items, offering store credit and discounts after sending in clothes [1:4].

Considerations Beyond Selling

If selling proves too time-consuming or unprofitable, donating clothes to local charities, orphanages, or community programs can be a meaningful alternative [4:1][4:4]. Some fast-fashion brands offer discounts for recycling old garments, though these may not always provide monetary compensation [4:1].

ORIGINAL POST

I honestly don't want to spend hours and hours on selling clothes but I also don't want to just donate everything because I could use the money.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to go about this?

For example:

Is there a specific website or a program where you send clothes and they give you a certain amount?

Any programs where they give you store credit? For example, I know H&M has the 15% discount.

Any tips on thrift stores?

Thank you!

ThredUp is an easy option. You order a bag, fill it up with your clothes and send it in. They'll take care of listing it for you. They do charge a fee per bag that they take out of the earnings.

They are very transparent about how much you'll get once the item sells.

Sneakertr33 · 1 month ago

DO NOT USE THREDUP they at this point tell you that you're basically donating to them and shouldn't expect to see any money. If you don't pay to get your items back expect the better items to be rejected for "wear" as in the person sorting will wear them home or sell them elsewhere. Shop thredup though its much more buyer friendly.

Just my experience, but I've found that thredup makes it very difficult to net a positive return on clothing. They do charge a bag/shipping fee and also take a significant portion of earnings from clothing that sells. There's also a limited window of time for your clothing to sell in order to qualify for any earnings.

Personally I would use thredup for clothing that you don't mind letting go off/just want to find a new home for and individually sell pieces that are more expensive on poshmark, ebay, mercari, etc.

Just a warning that they will reject a lot of your clothes and not pay you for them and then list them anyway. Kind of seems like stealing?

I find consignment stores to be the least amount of work. HOWEVER the payout isn't always that good. You really have to have items no more than 2-3 years old and still in style. Some cities have more vintage/eclectic consignment places too if that fits with your items better.

Another option is listing in "lots" on Facebook marketplace.

Agree with this wholeheartedly. I have used Mercari and would do so again. Set up and selling are easy and fees are reasonable.

True. I have used Mercari as well

If you don't want to do the work, either find a local consignment store or TheRealReal for designer items and ThredUp for mall brands. You usually get a $100 off code after you send in items to TheRealReal.

If you are willing to put in the work, Poshmark is not as easy as it once was but I can still sell some items on there. They might sit for a couple months before finally selling. I usually start with Poshmark, then get bored and give up and go to the above methods for the rest.

Plato’s Closet or Uptown Cheapskate.

The used clothing market is super saturated. Consider the "sunk cost fallacy" and if your time is worth the money you might make, and how much your stuff is really worth. I take my daughters stuff to a local place that is similar to Platos closet because she is a teen and has more trendy and up to date stuff. I just donate my husbands and my clothes. I have some expensive sustainable brand stuff that I will list on Poshmark or ebay if I ever decide to unload it but we don't have designer anything so...

Try Carousell, I used to sell my pre loved clothes there and very easy naman ng transaction. If may time din try depop, though mas mahaba process. Also try posting sa stories yung decluttering, baka may gusto bumili.

Where do you sell old clothes these days? I’ve got a pile—some great, some garbage

Posted by StopAffectionate6540 · in r/IndianFashionAddicts · 2 months ago

Hey folks, I'm in the middle of a much-needed closet cleanup and I’ve got a ton of clothes—some nearly new, some worn to death! Not looking to dump them; I’d rather send them somewhere they’ll actually be reused, resold, or recycled.

Anyone here tried any services that buy or accept used clothes? I’ve heard of a few big-name fast fashion brands doing this, but I’m more interested in supporting smaller start-ups or sustainable platforms—something that feels less soulless.

Would love to hear your experiences—whether they pay, donate, or repurpose. Any tips, names, or warnings welcome!

We usually have them over to the help, like maids, security, gardeners.

Then there are people who come asking for old clothes and construction workers.

The less fortunate also take some.

The rest either gets disposed through our local solid waste management programme or burned after being used as rags.

Gotcha. Although, I'm about the waste management and the burning of clothes for the first time. You've aroused my curiosity about the waste management system; could you talk more on this please?

The local government takes old clothing (scrap/cut pieces/rags/stuff that you can't donate to anyone) at ₹50 a sack once in a few months.

there used to be a garment deposit programme at H&M where you could bring a bag of ANY garment (towel, rags, clothes, etc) and they will give you certain % off of their products. i am not sure if that is still open to all.

maybe some local guys who accept used clothes for cash but that money isn't much. just an effective way to get rid of old clothes.

donation is a good option as well. if your clothes can be still worn you could give it away to someone who could use them.

For those who have sold their pre-loved clothes, what platform did you use?

Posted by ketkalat · in r/classifiedsph · 5 months ago

Hi! Hope it's ok to post this question here.

My sister and I just cleaned out our closets and have a lot (50-60 pcs) of clothes we don't wear anymore. Either because they're office clothes (we don't go to the office anymore), too small, not our current style, haven't reached for them in a year or two.

Since most of them are branded, we'd like to try selling them. For those who have sold a chunk of clothes before, where would you recommend we sell them? Or where have you had the best experience?

So I have been clearing my closets and I’ve been donating most of my clothing that no longer fits. I’ve come across quite a few items that still have tags on them. What are you all doing with new unworn clothing. I attempted to sell some clothing on eBay but unfortunately my first clothing sale was with a scammer so I don’t want to go that route. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated😊

Thread up! So great. Pack it up and ship it off to Thread-up an online consignment store. They photograph and post your items, you control the price. After sales either cash out to your bank or spend in the app on new clothes.

Any advice on how to actually sell unused clothes?

Posted by jaduhlynr · in r/ZeroWaste · 3 years ago

Hey everyone! I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to sell clothes that are name brand and in good condition (not really designer in most cases) relatively quickly. I haven't had any luck on Poshmark or Depop because frankly I don't really have the time for the social media aspect of the apps. I've heard eBay can be good if you're trying to resell clothes as a consistent source of income, but my boyfriend and I are just trying to downsize (we both used to have a slight shopping problem, but we've changed our ways!) while trying to make back a little bit of money.

Has anyone had luck with a garage sale? Facebook marketplace? If so what are some tips and advice for actually getting your clothes to sell. Thank you!

I think it really depends on the name brand.

If you have femme clothing you can try ThredUp.

As other folks have mentioned, FB marketplace or offer up are good options for individual local sales BUT it depends on the product. If you’re trying to sell fast fashion items, the local market is smaller and you’ll probably sell for lower than you want.

If it were me, I’d take my clothes to a local reseller like Buffalo Exchange or Plato’s Closet, or I would try ThredUp. Everything they don’t take, I would just offer for free on my Buy Nothing group as I personally don’t find it worth the effort to sell clothes on offer up or FB marketplace or eBay.

I buy a lot of my wardrobe these days from Vinted. There is no social media aspect as far as I know.

You'll be miles ahead of other sellers if you:

  1. Wash/iron the clothes and put them on a hanger in a way they aren't a crumpled, wrinkled mess
  2. Photograph them in decent light
  3. Put a couple of measurements in the listing

90% of sellers don't do these very basic things. Why would I buy a wadded-up rag that you apparently photographed by candlelight at midnight and have declared is a "medium"?

edit: photographing it on yourself to display your boobs to best advantage also won't encourage me to buy it.

I found that clothes only sell when you list them very low for less than they're worth. I never made any sales until I started listing everything for between 1 and 3 euros. I'm happy I did because now it's out of my house and it's better to have a little money than no money for them.

3 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 3 years ago

Weirdly I’ve had the exact opposite experience. I’ve had some clothes listed on Depop for £5 that I’ve been hoping to shift for over a year now; then earlier this month I bumped them up to £10 wondering if it was a psychological thing of people subconsciously thinking cheap = bad style/quality and I’ve already made 3 sales after a dry spell that was ongoing since January.

Wow that's great, congrats on your sales! Maybe it differs per platform? I sold my stuff on vinted.

Anyone here want to sell the clothes they never wear? 👕👗💸

Posted by Ok-Produce-4809 · in r/smallbusinessindia · 16 days ago

Hey everyone, Be honest — how many pieces in your wardrobe are just sitting there, barely worn (or never worn at all)? Instead of letting them take up space, why not sell them?

There’s actually a pretty big market for second-hand clothes right now, from basics to branded stuff. People are clearing out their closets, making cash, and giving their clothes a second life.

Would anyone here be interested in a little “sell your wardrobe” thread? Could be a cool way to: Share what you’re selling Swap selling platform tips Or even connect with folks who might want to buy directly

Kind of a win-win: you declutter, make money, and someone else gets clothes they’ll actually wear.

How to sell used clothes

Key Considerations for Selling Used Clothes

  1. Choose the Right Platform:

    • Online Marketplaces: Consider platforms like Poshmark, Depop, eBay, or Mercari for a wider audience.
    • Local Options: Use Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or local consignment shops for quicker sales without shipping.
  2. Quality and Condition:

    • Ensure clothes are clean, free of stains, and in good condition. Minor repairs can increase value.
    • Highlight any brand names or unique features that add value.
  3. Photography:

    • Take clear, well-lit photos from multiple angles. Use natural light and a neutral background to showcase the items effectively.
    • Include close-ups of labels, tags, and any flaws.
  4. Pricing:

    • Research similar items to set competitive prices. Consider the original retail price, brand, and condition.
    • Be open to negotiation, especially on platforms that encourage haggling.
  5. Descriptions:

    • Write detailed descriptions including size, brand, material, and any unique features. Be honest about the condition to build trust with buyers.
  6. Shipping and Handling:

    • If selling online, factor in shipping costs. Offer options for buyers, such as free shipping or local pickup.
    • Use sturdy packaging to ensure items arrive in good condition.

Recommendation: Start with platforms like Poshmark or Depop if you're targeting a younger audience, as they are user-friendly and cater specifically to fashion. For a broader reach, eBay is a solid option. If you prefer local sales, Facebook Marketplace is convenient and allows for immediate transactions.
