TL;DR
Reputable Sources
One of the most reliable ways to ensure you're buying authentic anime merchandise is to purchase from well-known, trustworthy retailers. Japanese shops are often recommended as they typically stock only official merchandise [1:1]. Some users have suggested stores like Crunchyroll, Box Lunch, and ThinkGeek (though it's closed down now) as potential sources for legitimate products
[1:3].
Licensing and Tags
Checking for official licensing and tags is crucial when determining the authenticity of anime merchandise. Look for copyright marks and UPC codes on the packaging [1:2]. For specific series, such as "Attack on Titan," you can look for the production committee's name on the product or packaging
[1:1]. In the case of Sanrio merchandise, items should have a tag indicating the character's name, and phrases like "Sanrio License" or "Sanrio Originals"
[5:1]
[5:4].
Price and Quality
A common red flag for fake merchandise is pricing that seems too good to be true. Authentic items, especially popular ones, are rarely sold at low prices [3]. Additionally, examine the quality of the item closely. Fakes often have flaws in stitching or other details that can give them away
[2:3]. If possible, request additional photos to better assess the item's authenticity
[2:2].
Ethical Considerations
Many collectors prefer to buy authentic merchandise out of respect for the creators and the industry [4:3]. Purchasing fake items does not support the original creators and can sometimes fund unethical practices. However, some individuals are okay with purchasing fakes as long as they are priced accordingly and not misrepresented as genuine
[4:5].
Community Resources
Engaging with online communities can also be helpful. Many collectors are willing to share their expertise and help others identify whether an item is real or fake [2:4]. Visual guides and community discussions can provide valuable insights into spotting counterfeit products
[2:1].
I want to support the anime industry, but I'm not ready to pay 45 dollars for blu rays or for figurines. How do I know if a certain product is official merchandise profit of which goes to the creators?
Example: there is a AoT Memo Pad by GREAT EASTERN, is it official?
Well, there's a few signs. My general way of telling if something's a knockoff. Check for wrong information, like if it's a photo of one character but it doesn't have the character's name or a completely different name on the box. Check for UPC Codes, "Copyright" marks.
If you're buying it used, like with Ebay or something, it's not gonna help the industry.
Try Crunchyroll store, think geek, box lunch.
Just tried ThinkGeek and its closed down.
Also you buy the manga for series. That you can do almost anywhere
It's supporting the creator only, not the industry, so doesn't fit for me.
Fair enough.
The easiest way is to buy from japanese shops which are known to be trustworthy and only stock professional merchandise. Though there are some reputable american and european shops as well. Another thing is to recognize the usual manufacturers of merchandise. For example, Cospa makes all sorts of clothes and trinkets, but they don't sell things directly to the customer.
Yet another way is to check that the merchandise is licensed by the production commitee. In SnKs case, it would be the 「進撃の巨人」製作委員会. You can look for this on the packaging or in the product description online. If it lacks such a copyright claim, chances are it's not official.
Here are some shops selling merch: https://www.reddit.com/r/AnimeFigures/wiki/shops + "Amazon.jp", the ".jp" part is important.
And here is a FAQ for buying from such retailers: https://www.reddit.com/r/AnimeFigures/wiki/faq
that was pretty an extended answer, thank you very much!
hello! as someone who’s passionate in collecting chiikawa merch, i’m always eager to help others out in getting their favourite merch. i know it can get upsetting when you worked so hard to end up getting a duped (if you’re okay with fakes, more power to you ‘cause it’s difficult & $$$ to get access to authentic merch!)
i wanted to make a small visual general guide for anyone who's new to buying chiikawa merch - specifically 10cm mascots. this is for those who aren't buying from chiikawamarket.jp but from second hand online stores (jp mercari, surugaya, rakuten, mercari, yahoo auctions, vinted, ebay, carousell etc) and aren't aware of what to look out for! i hope this helps at least one person out 💕
please join us at #goods channel in the /nagano discord if you need more help 🥺 we love sharing our hauls and help others out identifying if their chiikawa is fake/authentic!
Love this visual guide and attention to detail! 🫶 I think in the west we're so used to merch/products in general not looking exactly like the ad/promotional material, but in Japan the standards are much higher (usually)! If the listing doesn't look similar, we should take a closer look or if you're able to, request more pics! Happy merching every1!
thank you🥹! there isn’t really a guide in the western community (from what i’m aware of) so i figured to make a general one. great advice 🥰
If it’s confusing, just focus mainly on the stitching and tags. They always will have one of those flaws if they are fake + no one is making really good fakes of Chiikawa since it’s pretty widely accessible in Japan and isn’t really that big in the US.
At best you will find a fake that has some identical stitching or features to the real one but all of em always got a flaw.
i showed this on the discord earlier but this is an example of fakes getting really close to the original where some people couldn’t tell w/o a trained eye. (left: real right:fake) this is unfortunately sold out on chiikawamarket so the only way to get this is through waiting for a restock or 2nd hand sellers. there are people who collect and do mind having fakes. it’s pretty expensive to go through a proxy + shipping fees to end up disappointed in getting a fake. there is a community in the west who collect merch so this guide is mainly for them to hopefully help 🙂↕️
hii!
thanks for this guide. i have pinned it to our community highlights 😊😊
Just jumping on here but if anyone wants to know if their merch is legit and wants to compare to a real one, pm me!! I bought over 40-50 chiikawa plushies in Japan in official stores :)
no you’re so valid- the bootlegs unfortunately have been getting better and it’s being made faster after new releases. the quality of the chiikawa merch is actually really well made! its one thing for a seller to be explicit about selling a dupe but when they hide it and sell it for more, thats scummy 😣
They are kinda getting better since I seen a few pop up on 3rd party sites but I don’t think they’ll get to point where there ends up being really good clones of it. You’re better off making fakes of other stuff than chiikawa plushies unless you legitimately live in Japan. Most of those fakes don’t even make it back to the states because of how actively Japan cracks down on fakes of anything, especially clothes.
I'm fine with bootlegs, so long as i'm paying bootleg price
oh yeah for sure if you can get at bootleg pricing! it sucks when sellers dupe people fakes with authentic pricing 🥲
After seeing so many posts about whether Ado plushies are real or fake, I wanted to share some tips to help you avoid getting scammed.
1. Check the price:
If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Real Ado plushies are never sold cheap. Resellers know how popular and hard to get these are, and they take advantage of that by selling them at high prices. But if something is way too cheap, it's most likely a fake.
2. Look closely at the photos:
If the listing only uses stock photos, that’s already a red flag. Even if they look like real photos, do a reverse image search (for example, on Google). If you find the same photos in other listings, it’s almost definitely a scam.
Tip: Message the seller and ask for more photos – ideally with a piece of paper that has your name or a specific word written on it. That’s a good way to confirm they actually have the plush.
3. Check the seller’s reviews:
Are the reviews good or bad? What do other buyers say? But be careful – good reviews can be fake too. If they were all posted around the same time or sound very similar, that’s a warning sign.
4. Pay safely:
Always pay using eBay Buyer Protection or PayPal with buyer protection. That gives you a much better chance of getting your money back if you do end up falling for a fake.
I hope this helps some of you. And I truly hope you all get your hands on an Ado plush someday!
This is a burner account bc I’m not sure if this will be received poorly or not, but I’m genuinely curious on why people are so adamant about whether merch is fake or not. Is it a price scam thing (fake merch sold at real merch price) or is it more like the “cool” factor that comes with having real merch? Because if it gets to the point where people can’t tell if it’s real or fake, I feel like cute is cute and if you like it that’s all that matters. If you already bought it, maybe you could warn other buyers in a review or get a refund or something , but I feel like the only thing that would come of it at the end is getting upset about a product you already have when you could just enjoy it. I’m only asking because recently all I’m getting from this sub are a bunch of “is this real or a fake?” posts. Thank you for any answers.
It's a question of ethics. Respect for the creator, respect for the people who designed the goods, respect for the people who make it, respect for the people who sell it in legit places.
Uncontrolled counterfeit can be dangerous and is often made by barely paid children who just get dismissed and replaced when they are hurt.
yep! there’s many ways to support a creator. through creating fan art, to creating memes, sharing their work etc. buying merch is one way to express our dedication. i want my money to monetarily support Nagano and her team instead of the hands of a scammer. there are people who can’t buy merch (whether it’s accessibility or financial reason) and there’s nothing wrong with that. however, for those who do, getting a fake is upsetting when we spend a lot of money to get said product
If people care about respect they would start doing the research to make sure they're not buying from scalpers. But they're not. People just want real merch. I'm sorry
I want to support Nagano and I don't want to buy products from someone who is making money selling low quality fake products without permission.
I understand that in some areas you can only get fakes.
But I don't like people who take advantage of the feelings of Chiikawa fans and sell them fake products.
For me it’s a price thing, if I pay the price I would pay for a real item I want to ensure I get the real thing. I’m okay knowingly buying dupes/fakes for much lower prices, but if I’m paying $20 +for a keychain it better be genuine. If someone sells it to me as genuine and authentic it had better be authentic. I’m not okay being lied to or scammed out of money. I’m sure most people feel like this.
absolutely. i don’t think many people are aware that it’s not easy when it comes to buying chiikawa merch. if you want authentic merch, you’d need to go through a proxy + shipping fees. sure you can buy from sites like mercari, but as you get deeper into the hobby, you realize there’s a lot of stuff you would want to collect but it’s only possible through second hand sellers. there are limited mascots such as the halloween, holiday and birthday mascots that don’t re release and the only option is to buy from second hand sellers. id be upset if i paid the same if not more for a mascot to find out its a fake because you can just buy a fake that’s $1
You can't be serious right?
Consumers are expecting they're products to be authentic instead of receiving a fake especially when sellers are charging over retail for them.
i like to support the original creator even if its something like merch
I'm going to be honest here, I didn't even think that in a brand this huge it would be such a big thing if something is legit or not. Maybe because Sanrio is everywhere and it (sadly) has become so normal to see even wonky looking Hello Kittys in thrift stores, markets etc. So without even thinking about it, my dumb ass recently ordered a big bunch of Sanrio themed blind boxes from AliExpress, and only now I wonder if any of them are going to be legit? How can I tell?
A big thing I've noticed, look at the tag carefully. Official Sanrio will say "Sanrio" or "Sanrio License". Fake Sanrio will almost always say " Sanrio Smiles"
It's honestly difficult to tell with figurines. Some are very obvious due to quality alone. But some are very well made. Imo, if it's cheaper and good quality, it shoudktn matter much.
Sanrio Smiles is a legitimate tag but it was mostly used in the 90’s and 2000’s. These are items designed and produced by Sanrio vs a company who purchased the license.
I should add - items like this now use the Sanrio Originals tag but sometimes still say Sanrio Smiles.
Thank you, this helps a lot and takes away some of the guilt I have😅
Sanrio Smiles isn’t fake, Sanrio Smiles is a division of Sanrio that is from its company but sells usually direct from that store only. There’s a Sanrio Smiles in my town and it’s an official Sanrio store just the name is Smiles. Idk if it’s old, or from Japan for America but it’s real. Aliexpress is also “real” if it’s licensed. OP you’re gonna wanna look at the tag in the actual doll. Usually Sanrio merch has a tag for THAT character. So if it’s a Tiny Chum it should have a Tiny Chum name tag, Mocha would have a Cinnamoroll tag etc. if its tag-less it most likely is a “fake”.
Sanrio Originals are, well, the original. This tag is on products designed and manufactured by Sanrio’s Japanese branch. These products are the ones you find in Sanrio stores and authorized specialty retailers only. They’re super strict about this one.
Hello Kitty & Friends are North American Sanrio. These are legit but they’re designed and manufactured by a different branch with completely different standards (and much bigger volume). You’ll find these at lots of mass retailers.
If it’s Sanrio for other countries, it will say Sanrio and then License underneath. I think they always have a holographic sticker too.
Hope this helps!

sanrio needs to start doing something like the nintendo seal tbh
I’ve been thinking of making a video or something showing the different types of tags. If I do I’ll post it here!
That would be so amazing ✨
For some ungodly reason, several Tsutomu Nihei series are out of print and not cheap to collect. People on this sub have warned against buying fake, usually Malaysian, bootleg copies. My question is: how the hell can someone tell if a copy is bootleg or not? Collecting Abara or Biomega would be a dream, but dropping hundreds of dollars on manga of questionable authenticity is less than ideal. Any advice for what to look for when purchasing out of print manga?
It’ll have Kodansha or Viz as publisher if it’s authentic.
By looking at the publisher, if the original print is hardcover/soft, etc but it diffrence from series to series
The bootlegs have a different spine than official copies. Anything from Malaysia on eBay is fake. You can also backwards image search pictures from listings to see if the pictures have ever been used before, bootleg listings reuse photos a lot.
Reality just is you’re going to be paying $75 at least for an authentic copy of Abara in English.
Stay away from eBay, that place is a cesspool of fakes. Amazon actively removes and prosecute counterfeiters, which is why they don't do business there.
Abara and Biomega is our of print so you're at the mercy of resellers but there have been a lot of Biomega volumes showing up so you can get some volumes for only $22 on Amazon but Abara is a different story.
thank you!
I think the only choice a buyer would have would be to contact the seller, converse with them, get pics of the product being held by the seller (such as them having the manga next to a piece of paper saying their seller name, like "Silicon-Seller-997") and then taking a bet on its authenticity.
The only real safeguard would be a strong, guaranteed return-policy that would insure that you'd get your money back if it's a bootleg item.
hah, safeguard
My background
I’m a native Mandarin speaker and a North-American retailer, so I deal with many Labubu manufacturers—both legitimate and counterfeit. After talking with 20-plus sellers of the so-called “祖国版” figures (the polite Mandarin term for fakes), here’s what I’ve learned about telling real Labubu from knock-offs such as “Lafufu” or “Lapopo.”
>
People can buy bootlegs on purpose—they’re cheaper and still cute—but no one should pay authentic prices for a fake. I hope this helps you spend wisely.
Would you say a Labubu that has a legit QR code on its paper tag is the best way to verify authenticity?
Check the third image and the last one you will know QR code can be fake
I mean the tag on the Labubu itself not box
Do you have any tips on identifying fake Zimomos or just the labubu blind boxes
Are they actually fake Zimomo made at the moment? 🤔
Oh I don’t know. I was just asking in case Zimomos are starting to get fakes made of them. I ordered one from Snkrdunk and I did a lot of research on other people’s experiences but you never know when ordering from other sites. It hasn’t come in yet but when it does I want to know how to verify its authenticity myself
only apply to the blindbox
Just don’t trust the QR CODE. The one I sent was used on the care label inside the package. The QR code I show here were taken from unused box and it is real
When you open the link it will bounce to popmart that is how they fake it like real
EMPHASIS ON THE QR CODE!! because I just reviewed a whole set of macarons and the QR code was legit but the labubus are most definitely lafufus and don’t have a QR code on their tags
Are the bags in glossy or matte?
Just to verify if the tag on the labubu itself goes to the m-gss.popmart.com site and comes back as first time verification then without a doubt it's real?
Hey guys,
I'm looking into second-hand plushes right now, and I was wondering: are there any common giveaways that a plush is fake ?
Are there any common tags / models that are commonly fake ? How do you spot them usually?
weird stitching/looks understuffed, its hard to explain but when you see bootlegs in person its very noticeable. also suction cups. im not aware of any official plushies using one however, but im less knowledgable on mario stuff compared to sonic/pokemon
I made this video last year with some tips to spot bootleg plush: https://youtu.be/w0eNwIx3a70?si=EYruJmNCiqTqDbN4
Overtime youll notice patterns within official plushes that, when u don't see them in a plush, or notice that they're very off, you'll know its a bootleg. It's hard to pinpoint what makes someone instantly know it's bootleg without having the knowledge of what already exists out there.
Depends alot on the character you're talking about too, "Sanei" is the most popular mario plush producers, and so bootlegs usually have that label, trying to pass off as a product from that company, try searching youtube for reviews/unboxing of a certain plush and see if they mention it's official, and if no one in the comments sais otherwise.
A common tag used is a white background with a "Super Mario" logo, it was used by Sanei in the japanese release of their plushies, but very common amongst bootlegs; most plushies nowadays dont have printed on/sticker materials either
I see so many clueless folks falsely claiming items are fake/real. Unless you actually know, don’t do it. Doesn’t help anyone, doesn’t make you look cool.
fake

Can someone recommend some legit websites where i can buy a Naruto shirt for my 3 year old?
Found theses guys on TikTok the shop is Lexxyy I got from them only took 2 weeks good quality and pretty affordable they are underrated for sure
^amazon is not legit merch unless it’s Amazon.co.jp !! If you’re looking for legit merch that’s not illegally made, then go to
https://en.animate-onlineshop.jp
https://www.amazon.co.jp/s?k=ナルトシャツ&ref=nb_sb_noss (You’re able to order from Amazon jp by changing the language to English and selecting shipping to America. You’ll need to either use a proxy service to pay in Japanese yen tho idk if they have PayPal, or buy a Japanese Amazon gift card from playasia. I’ve bought 3 Amazon Japan Amazon gift cards from playasia and one Japanese iTunes card and I can guarantee that they’re safe to order from. Shipping is super quick and it arrives within a week most of the time! My family friends always use Amazon jp and we’re always surprised how fast the shipping is)
Edit: I totally forgot Amazon jp has currency conversions so you’re able to use your credit card. I’ve only pre ordered from here so far and pre orders don’t accept this. If it’s not a pre order you can do currency conversions!
https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/ut-graphic-tees
(Uniqlo is a Japanese fashion company and they collaborate with animes pretty often. I have so many of their Pokémon collab shirts and they’re very very good quality and they still look brand new after like 7 years. )
These are the best places to look for new anime T-shirts or merchandise for Naruto. Except for Uniqlo, the rest are a bit pricey because they are official merch made from collaborations with the official studio that made the Naruto anime so they ship from Japan. Uniqlo is cheaper because they have stores in America now. If your son like Demon Slayer as well my advice is to go snag some of the Uniqlo T-shirts right now because they’re doing a final sale which means that it’s currently at the cheapest price and after this sells out they won’t be making it again.
Moving on to legit merchandises that are available in the US, I recommend
https://store.crunchyroll.com/collections/shop?q=naruto+shirts
Crunchy roll is an official company that has permission from Japanese anime studios to post their newest anime episodes on their app. It’s like a Netflix for anime, except you are able to use the app to watch free anime although you’ll have to watch like 3 ads per episode. For episodes without ads, you pay a subscription.
Any shirt or merchandise that is sold in crunchy roll store all has permission from the Japanese animating studios, and they’re legit merch. I’m guessing they’re good quality too. I’ve never ordered from them since I’m Japanese and my grandparents buy me Japanese t shirts of my favorite animes. Crunchy roll has a wide selection of Naruto T-shirts and long sleeved shirts and probably even sweatshirts, since it’s an American company and knows that American people like Naruto (the faze kinda died in Japan sadly although there are a ton of Naruto lovers.) so they have lots of Naruto shirts on the website right now. And I took a look at it and all the designs are amazing!
https://www.hottopic.com/search?q=Naruto
Although the hot topic shirt designs are kind of simple compared to the crunchy roll ones, hot topic also has permission from Japanese studios to sell certain anime merchandise. They’re around the same price as the crunchy roll shirts!
Anyways, the most cheapest and best quality is from Uniqlo but unfortunately Uniqlo doesn’t have any Naruto collabs going on rn and idk when they had one last time. Japan doesn’t have any new recent Naruto shirts so the best to look at right now is crunchy roll store and hot topic! For more expensive options, Amazon jp.
If you order on Amazon jp and get it shipped to the US do you have to pay for shipping? Like normally Amazon prime is free shipping but is it different if you have a prime account and order of Amazon jp? I know this post is a year old sorry just stumbled on it while looking for best places to get anime merch. Is the quality of like anime figures higher/better from Amazon jp compared go ordering the "same" (the photos look the same but often the figurine you receive doesn't look like the photo advertised) from Amazon USA?
If you want to order figures from Japan I recommend Amiami instead of amazon jp. It’s cheaper and has a much better packaging quality. For amazon jp you basically make a new amazon account and then you can order stuff with whatever your currency is. But you can’t pre-order things with your currency. If you wanna pre order something you’ll have to get an amazon giftcard secondhand from somewhere like playasia (I did this for the genshin concert box because only amazon had free shipping!)
Amiami is better for figures because amazon jp packaging quality literally sucks. I ordered a pokemon plushie for my friend and it came in a cardboard box that looked like it was beaten and kicked around for fun. It was so beaten up that the box was literally open you can stick your hands in the box and steal the plushie. There were cut marks foo. The concert box came in a decent box because its heavy so if they gave me a crappy box it will fall out lol. It was still a crappy box compared to packages I’ve ordered from any other place.
They don’t allow you to review about packaging either. I made a loooong detailed review showing the package pictures of when it just came. They didn’t allow the review because it was “not about the product”
Shipping will be insane if you order from amazon jp. I think figures have like a $100+ shipping just for one figure. If you put your address in and search the figure you want, you’ll see the shipping price as well. Amazon prime in your country and in Japan are different so you won’t get free shipping ever 😭
The only difference with amazon US and amazon Japan is that amazon US has a lot of fake figures while in amazon Japan the legitimate companies for the figures sell on amazon as well.
BoxLunch is also good - https://www.boxlunch.com/
Same parent company as HotTopic, but they often have different items.
You can use a non Japanese credit card for amazon.co.jp. The only time I've ever needed a proxy for it is when one of the items can't ship directly to me(so like 2 orders out of many)
Omg wait I totally forgot you can 😭😂 the only thing I’ve ordered from Japanese Amazon so far is a pre-order item which is the genshin concert box and they don’t do currency conversions for pre orders so I completely forgot they do conversions since I read about it. Oops my bad!
Do any of the sites you've listed have issues with shipping to Lithuania? (i know this post is old by now..)
Yep, at least crunchyroll, uniqlo and amazonjp do, i don't know about the others. Im also looking to order clothes to Lithuania :D
https://www.anime-hood.store/ they dont have many but they have rly nice designs
In
I usually go with CDJapan for my stuff. They've been around for quite a bit and have an awesome range of merch and books that are tough to find elsewhere. They also offer this proxy service which is a lifesaver when you want something from Japan that's not listed or already sold out. The only minor hassle is that it takes about a week longer to get your order, but that's about it. Super legit!
