TL;DR You cannot save the Sunbeam from being destroyed. The game is scripted such that the Sunbeam will always be shot down by the Quarantine Enforcement Platform (QEP), regardless of your actions.
Understanding the Sunbeam Event
The Sunbeam event is a scripted sequence in Subnautica where the rescue ship, Sunbeam, attempts to land on the planet but is inevitably destroyed by the QEP [1:2]
[3:2]. Despite various attempts and strategies shared by players, the developers did not include an alternate ending where the Sunbeam survives
[4:9].
Disabling the QEP
Some players have attempted to disable the QEP before the Sunbeam arrives, hoping to prevent its destruction. However, even if you deactivate the gun, the Sunbeam will still be shot down due to the game's programming [3:2]
[4:2]. There is a hidden "Easter egg" message indicating that the Sunbeam can't land due to debris fields if the QEP is deactivated, but this does not change the outcome
[4:9].
Radio Messages and Timing
One strategy discussed is delaying the Sunbeam's arrival by not listening to radio messages. The countdown for the Sunbeam event only starts after you listen to certain radio communications [2:2]
[5:1]. By ignoring these messages, players can delay the event, giving them more time to explore and prepare
[2:10].
Game Bugs and Patches
There have been reports of bugs affecting the Sunbeam event, such as the gun firing despite being deactivated [3:9]
[4:11]. These issues may vary depending on the platform or version of the game, and players should check for any patches that might address these bugs.
Exploration and Preparation
While saving the Sunbeam is not possible, players can use the time before the event to explore the game world, gather resources, and build bases [5]. This preparation can enhance the overall gameplay experience and help players progress through other aspects of the game.
Idk, please tell me
Sadly the devs didn’t add a sunbeam ending their deaths unavoidable
I’ve played the game before. I know I’m not getting picked up by the Sunbeam, but I did want to challenge myself to disable the QEP before they arrive.
>Challenge myself
>Look inside
>Delays sunbeam by not touching the radio for 11 hours
Ah hahah fair enough I have been watching this game since development so I know a decent amount about the game
No they're not? This is the special message you get when you disable QEP before the sunbeam tries to land. Idk why this is top comment.
I have a feeling that this also happens if you are not in the mountains when they arrive, even with the QEP active.
No, you just don't see them blow up
Yeah you get a narration of it from your PDA instead, talking about how it detected a large power surge and could no longer detect the ship.
Re enable the QEP so when Alterra comes back, they get a nasty surprise.
It will yeah. Did it recently, got to -40 before I took off
Space ligma😭
I just wanted you all to know its possible to save innocent lives coming to rescue you. If you cure yourself and disable the gun before you get the radio messages to go to the island. The Sunbeam will instead tell you that there is a large debris field around the planet and they cannot land. I just did this on my hardcore run and thought I'd share. I hope a lot of you might go out of your way to save that ship in future runs.
Yes, it’s possible, but you somehow need to guess (or find on google) some door code in the aurora. In my latest gameplay I managed to finish the game without the sunbeam being shot
The easiest way is to not listen to radio messages. The Sunbeam countdown will not start until you listen to the radio message. That will leave you plenty of time.
You don't need the Aurora Door Code to get the cure; you only need it to build the rocket. You can get cured, disable the gun, fix the radio, listen to the sunbeam being saved, then get the door code after that.
Or just watch Neebs Gaming’s Subnautica series for the door code (they are the voices in the message that gives you the code)
Or… just search for the code in the wiki…?
It’s ok… once you’ve done The Thing you can work your way through the rest of your radio messages and get that code. (Pro tip: if you partially deconstruct then reconstruct a radio it gives you the next available message right away. Helpful!)
The fun part is that their first radio communications imply that they dislike alterra. The first communication you get from them is them asking if Aurora reads, then proceeding to say that alterra sends and S.O.S. whenever the engine is low on grease and that they’ll have to waste time running errands for alterra.
Sunbeam does not like alterra.
Alas, >!the canon story in BZ is that the Sunbeam got shot down. How's that parallel timeline treating you?!<
>!Well, lost contact… maybe the parallel timeline has them continuing on their way and not bothering to deal any more with Alterra?!<
How do you cure yourself quickly enough though...
Pretty sure you just don’t answer the radio, or like the above comment suggested, skipping it completely.
its as simple as ignoring the radio during the whole game. Easy enough
Sunbeam? On my last 2 playthroughs, I stopped listening to the radio messages after the Sunbeam tells you they'll come get you (but before the countdown one) and then I did all the stuff to get the enzyme to get cured, so I could go get poked again at Gun Island, and everything powers down.
I go listen to radio messages again, Sunbeam contacts me, starts the countdown to landing, and I go and wait on the island and... the no-longer-powered gun still blasts them out of the sky!
Do I have to just not listen to any radio messages completely at the beginning? I know it's just a little script change that awaits, but I really wanted to save them, just once!
Your not suppised to, there is an event that happens only after the sunbeam is destroyed that progresses the story. The QEP is pre programmd to ALWAYS fire at the sunbeam, even if it has been deactivated.
What event are you referring to? Other than the Aurora exploding and you being given the passcode to the captain's quarters, there aren't any radio-based events that you need to go through to finish the game.
actually if you turn of the QEP you can save the sunbeam I even did this in my playthrough
Its currently bugged
There's some youtube videos about it... you can hear the sounds of the gun activating and firing and blowing them out of the sky but the gun doesn;t actually move from it's deactivated position.
That's strange. I read the Sunbeam is supposed to give you a message about being unable to land due to debris fields, if you deactivate the platform.
You have to desactivate the quarentine zone during the timer not before or after :)
nah I never listened to the radio and disabled the QEP and the sunbeam never started a countdown
During the timer... haven't tried that.
/sigh. Time to start up a new save. (No regrets.)
just don't listen to the radio period and then turn off the QEP (it worked for me)
You can't... at least not as of august 2018
can't seem to find anything more recent.

You dont, they never got around to coding it when they released the game.
There's a hidden "Easter egg" that if you disable the big gun before they arrive then they'll call you to say there's a huge debris cloud around the planet and they can't come and get you, so no there's no way to be saved by them
Really? They changed that then.
Tried exactly this in a playthrough. Finished the game, disabled the gun. Before answering any radiocall.
After answering the radio several times, the Sunbeam still arrived unchanged. The gun then glitched. The sounds of the gun deploying were audible, but the gun remained unmoved right until the shot was fired. That moment it jumped into firing position and the Sunbeam got shot down.
A bit anti-climactic, but not completely unexpected. Would have been cool if they arrived and picked me up though.
I had the same result, playing on PS4 I thought it was a console issue. But honestly it felt basically impossible, like that I had to ignore the radio and disable the gun ASAP. Feels like something they put in to troll anyone that did just that
IIRC, I think there was a bug that prevented the easter egg from occuring. They nmight have included a fix in the recent patch though.
I made a playthrough once where I launched the Neptune rocket as the timer expired for the sunbeam hoping for some sort of different dialog or event.
TLDR nothing happens, you get the same dialog with the debris field...even though I was already in space!
How were you able to receive the message when already in space?
You can't build a radio on the neptune? And even if you could, you can't interact with anything once the launch cutscene is started?
Once the timer is started for the Sunbeam’s arrival, it requires no further action on your part. The “cutscene” where the Sunbeam begins it’s descent happens whether or not you’re in the area once the timer ends. So if you timed it right, you could be in the launch sequence whilst hearing the Sunbeam’s approach to the planet
Once the timer is running you don't need a radio anymore. The timer runs out and you get the message from sunbeam saying they can't get through the debris field
I want to ask how you got all the resources in so little time, but I feel like the answer would involve spoilers and I haven't finished the game yet. I'll just assume it's as impressive as it sounds!!
They probably don’t die anyway. If you look close, you can see, that two intact life pods detach from the sunbeam, but they clip through the ground instead of landing in the water. I think the devs may add something there later, or it’s just an Easter egg.
Technically you just don’t have to use the radio till the guns off, if you don’t seek rescue they never come
I did see a video where a live gargantuan leviathan bursts out of the water and swallows the sunbeam whole.
I think this must have been a fan made patch rather than anything official but it was still very cool.
I finished my first playthrough 2 weeks ago; one thing that stood out to me was that the sunbeam event chain seemed to progress very slowly: The final event, where the ship was destroyed, happened on day 60 - by this time I had received all lifepod messages except for pod #2. (But the slow pace did not really bother me, as I was busy exploring wrecks & building a big, beautiful base anyway.)
Now I started a new game. It's only day 9 and the 40 minute countdown has just appeared on my screen. I have not really explored a lot at this point, I have no base, and I have only received 3 of the lifepod messages via the radio so far.
This time difference seems extreme to me. Of course I am faster in my second game, since I already know how to collect resources & craft basic tools, but I don't think that's good enough to explain it? Are there any weird triggers for the sunbeam events?
You listened to the radio later in the first save.
I think it just depends on when you listen to the radio is when they'll come for you. But you can save the Sunbeam which not many people know about, or at least don't care to save it.
I am confused. I have ran through all my radio messages, i am 12 hours in, have a cyclops, have a prawn suit, visited the lost river. I havent gotten the sunbeam event yet. I got a message saying they were on their way but havent heard a thing since
Sounds like you might have missed it then. I’d your not around the area when it happens, you don’t hear anything. And nothing pops up. When they say their on their way, you get a timer on screen in the top right corner. And when it finishes counting down, the even happens regardless of of your there or not. And nothing is recorded in the data. Just that it lost contact suddenly and that’s it.
I had the rendevous point pop up on my screen but didn't get any indication of when It would arrive. annoying
Well that event in itself isnt much interesting, but what you find next to it is.
I haven't run into that, always get a timer after listening to the final radio messsage, sounds like it glitched. Usually the radio message for it it comes up around day 10 for me, but there's probably some sequence and random timing involved. In other words, there's a sequence of 4 radio messages so it may depend on when you trigger them and when you listen to them.
You can actually ignore the Sunbeam altogether and it won't impact the game. If you're out of the area but within line of sight when the Sunbeam arrives you see a graphic of it entering the atmosphere and getting blown up then a message about it over the PDA. If out of sight, you'll just get the PDA message.
Edit: Nevermind
Edit 2: holy shiznick thanks for that shiny star
FYI... the outcome you faced is inevitable, so don't lose any sleep over it thinking you somehow lost the game. There's no way to change that fate.
SPOILERS
You use to be able to prevent the Sunbeam from being destroyed by shutting down the cannon in time. Does that not work anymore?
I think he’s talking about how >!you’re still stranded regardless. I’m pretty sure you can still save the sunbeam.!<
the canon recognises you are infected and does not accept your quarantine shutdown because its the sole reason its activated in the first place.
No, it doesn't. Turn the gun off > gun fires.
oh you can still disable the gun, but it fires anyways.
You can never board the Sunbeam, but you can save it; if you complete the main story before it arrives, you instead a message that the debris field is too dense and they can’t land, but will send for help.
I assume nothing happens once they send for help, right?
Well if you finish the complete story line before they get there they do something different will not spoil it though
Yeah you can stay when the Sunbeam arrives.
I mean the 'when' is never in doubt. It most certainly makes it down to the surface
Oof
I wasn’t at the landing site when the countdown ran out. But I just read that the Sunbeam is important to progressing the story. I imagine there’s still gotta be a way to progress though, right?
Sun beam isn’t important to gameplay don’t worry
Its not really that important in itself. Head over to where the landing site was supposed to be. While you did miss one of the best parts of the story, you should be able to piece together what happened.
Sorry, you missed your chance. You're stuck on the planet forever now.
Oh shut up. That's not true.
It is! I played it out, and got the ending where Riley grows old, on the planet, and has seven kids with a Gasopod. Honestly, they could have looked worse...
The PDA should give you a clue what happened to it.
The PDA should have implied something happened to the Sunbeam... Won't spoil it, you would have seen it if you were there. What happened: >!A giant laser gun on the island shot down the Sunbeam and destroyed it and it's crew.!< Basically, just continue playing the game as normal.
Please mark it with a spoiler. Also, it's not the end of the game, it's coded to >!explode!<
Unless you disable the quarantine platform beforehand. Then it >!flies away because of an asteroid feild!<
Wasn't it a >!debris field instead of asteroid!<
No one could kiddo.
Actually you can save them. If you avoid the radio until completing the game and disabling the gun, it won't be destroyed.
It still won't save the player though, there's an alternate message.
So cute that you had that fire extinguisher ready.
might be smart to mark with a spoiler.
Can’t save it.
I’m at a point where I don’t know what to do so I explore but I can’t explore much cause I can only go 200 m and I’m still finding cyclops fragments and I need to go deeper so how do I get upgrades? Also where is the lost river?
There are several entrances to the LR, you're not ready if you can only go 200m...you need a vehicle upgrade console, its a structure you'll place on a wall in your Moonpool.
You'll want to find the Degasi bases, the deepest one is near an LR entrance, but I recommend the one in the trench.
Ok thanks. Once I upgrade I’ll go down and hopefully not die
Its really not that bad, use care in managing your engine speed when near genuine threats while piloting the Cyclops, don't panic, and you'll be fine. Create a minibase near the entrance in the LR or in the biome above so you have somewhere close to respawn, and keep your SeaGlide handy. Casper is a sweetheart, he mostly gets his head stuck in the skull when I pay him a visit.
And plant a couple Bulbo Trees in the control room of your Cyclops, you'll never want for water or food again. All Praise to the Prophet Shel Silverstein!
Please don’t put spoilers in titles!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I only did just because the sunbeam exploding is part of the story and not everyone has gotten their yet so chill
Exactly. You put the sunbeam exploding in the title. You realize you can see the title weather or not it has the spoiler tag, right?
Luckily not a major spoiler, it happens very early on in the story and is pretty predictable
Have you explored the Aurora yet? Many interesting things can be found there. Bring a scanner.
Yeah I just made a laser cutter so next time I get on I’ll go. thanks :)
I'd also recommend bringing a propulsion/repulsion cannon
