How to Survive the Sunbeam Event in Subnautica

TL;DR You cannot save the Sunbeam from being destroyed. The game is scripted such that the Sunbeam will always be shot down by the Quarantine Enforcement Platform (QEP), regardless of your actions.

Understanding the Sunbeam Event

The Sunbeam event is a scripted sequence in Subnautica where the rescue ship, Sunbeam, attempts to land on the planet but is inevitably destroyed by the QEP [1:2][3:2]. Despite various attempts and strategies shared by players, the developers did not include an alternate ending where the Sunbeam survives [4:9].

Disabling the QEP

Some players have attempted to disable the QEP before the Sunbeam arrives, hoping to prevent its destruction. However, even if you deactivate the gun, the Sunbeam will still be shot down due to the game's programming [3:2][4:2]. There is a hidden "Easter egg" message indicating that the Sunbeam can't land due to debris fields if the QEP is deactivated, but this does not change the outcome [4:9].

Radio Messages and Timing

One strategy discussed is delaying the Sunbeam's arrival by not listening to radio messages. The countdown for the Sunbeam event only starts after you listen to certain radio communications [2:2][5:1]. By ignoring these messages, players can delay the event, giving them more time to explore and prepare [2:10].

Game Bugs and Patches

There have been reports of bugs affecting the Sunbeam event, such as the gun firing despite being deactivated [3:9][4:11]. These issues may vary depending on the platform or version of the game, and players should check for any patches that might address these bugs.

Exploration and Preparation

While saving the Sunbeam is not possible, players can use the time before the event to explore the game world, gather resources, and build bases [5]. This preparation can enhance the overall gameplay experience and help players progress through other aspects of the game.

It took about 11 hours, but I disabled the QEP before the Sunbeam went to its doom. Now that I've cured space ligma, what should I do before I go offworld?

Saving the Sunbeam

Posted by Odingatron · in r/subnautica · 2 years ago

I just wanted you all to know its possible to save innocent lives coming to rescue you. If you cure yourself and disable the gun before you get the radio messages to go to the island. The Sunbeam will instead tell you that there is a large debris field around the planet and they cannot land. I just did this on my hardcore run and thought I'd share. I hope a lot of you might go out of your way to save that ship in future runs.

Yes, it’s possible, but you somehow need to guess (or find on google) some door code in the aurora. In my latest gameplay I managed to finish the game without the sunbeam being shot

41 upvotes on reddit
squashcanada · 2 years ago

The easiest way is to not listen to radio messages. The Sunbeam countdown will not start until you listen to the radio message. That will leave you plenty of time.

You don't need the Aurora Door Code to get the cure; you only need it to build the rocket. You can get cured, disable the gun, fix the radio, listen to the sunbeam being saved, then get the door code after that.

Embarrassed-Camera96 · 2 years ago

Or just watch Neebs Gaming’s Subnautica series for the door code (they are the voices in the message that gives you the code)

Or… just search for the code in the wiki…?

RafRafRafRaf · 2 years ago

It’s ok… once you’ve done The Thing you can work your way through the rest of your radio messages and get that code. (Pro tip: if you partially deconstruct then reconstruct a radio it gives you the next available message right away. Helpful!)

32 upvotes on reddit
LampshadesAndCutlery · 2 years ago

The fun part is that their first radio communications imply that they dislike alterra. The first communication you get from them is them asking if Aurora reads, then proceeding to say that alterra sends and S.O.S. whenever the engine is low on grease and that they’ll have to waste time running errands for alterra.

Sunbeam does not like alterra.

Posted by FHL88Work · in r/subnautica · 6 years ago

Sunbeam? On my last 2 playthroughs, I stopped listening to the radio messages after the Sunbeam tells you they'll come get you (but before the countdown one) and then I did all the stuff to get the enzyme to get cured, so I could go get poked again at Gun Island, and everything powers down.

I go listen to radio messages again, Sunbeam contacts me, starts the countdown to landing, and I go and wait on the island and... the no-longer-powered gun still blasts them out of the sky!

Do I have to just not listen to any radio messages completely at the beginning? I know it's just a little script change that awaits, but I really wanted to save them, just once!

Your not suppised to, there is an event that happens only after the sunbeam is destroyed that progresses the story. The QEP is pre programmd to ALWAYS fire at the sunbeam, even if it has been deactivated.

What event are you referring to? Other than the Aurora exploding and you being given the passcode to the captain's quarters, there aren't any radio-based events that you need to go through to finish the game.

There's a hidden "Easter egg" that if you disable the big gun before they arrive then they'll call you to say there's a huge debris cloud around the planet and they can't come and get you, so no there's no way to be saved by them

1098 upvotes on reddit
RobertMaus · 2 years ago

Really? They changed that then.

Tried exactly this in a playthrough. Finished the game, disabled the gun. Before answering any radiocall.

After answering the radio several times, the Sunbeam still arrived unchanged. The gun then glitched. The sounds of the gun deploying were audible, but the gun remained unmoved right until the shot was fired. That moment it jumped into firing position and the Sunbeam got shot down.

A bit anti-climactic, but not completely unexpected. Would have been cool if they arrived and picked me up though.

I made a playthrough once where I launched the Neptune rocket as the timer expired for the sunbeam hoping for some sort of different dialog or event.

TLDR nothing happens, you get the same dialog with the debris field...even though I was already in space!

219 upvotes on reddit
P
Pyrhan · 2 years ago

How were you able to receive the message when already in space?

You can't build a radio on the neptune? And even if you could, you can't interact with anything once the launch cutscene is started?

4 upvotes on reddit
MorgFanatic52 · 2 years ago

Once the timer is started for the Sunbeam’s arrival, it requires no further action on your part. The “cutscene” where the Sunbeam begins it’s descent happens whether or not you’re in the area once the timer ends. So if you timed it right, you could be in the launch sequence whilst hearing the Sunbeam’s approach to the planet

5 upvotes on reddit
Itchy-Fennel2392 · 2 years ago

Once the timer is running you don't need a radio anymore. The timer runs out and you get the message from sunbeam saying they can't get through the debris field

I want to ask how you got all the resources in so little time, but I feel like the answer would involve spoilers and I haven't finished the game yet. I'll just assume it's as impressive as it sounds!!

They probably don’t die anyway. If you look close, you can see, that two intact life pods detach from the sunbeam, but they clip through the ground instead of landing in the water. I think the devs may add something there later, or it’s just an Easter egg.

34 upvotes on reddit
D2the_aniel · 2 years ago

Technically you just don’t have to use the radio till the guns off, if you don’t seek rescue they never come

DevilRenegade · 2 years ago

I did see a video where a live gargantuan leviathan bursts out of the water and swallows the sunbeam whole.

I think this must have been a fan made patch rather than anything official but it was still very cool.

[spoiler] sunbeam event question

Posted by io_inachis · in r/subnautica · 2 years ago

I finished my first playthrough 2 weeks ago; one thing that stood out to me was that the sunbeam event chain seemed to progress very slowly: The final event, where the ship was destroyed, happened on day 60 - by this time I had received all lifepod messages except for pod #2. (But the slow pace did not really bother me, as I was busy exploring wrecks & building a big, beautiful base anyway.)

Now I started a new game. It's only day 9 and the 40 minute countdown has just appeared on my screen. I have not really explored a lot at this point, I have no base, and I have only received 3 of the lifepod messages via the radio so far.

This time difference seems extreme to me. Of course I am faster in my second game, since I already know how to collect resources & craft basic tools, but I don't think that's good enough to explain it? Are there any weird triggers for the sunbeam events?

Sounds like you might have missed it then. I’d your not around the area when it happens, you don’t hear anything. And nothing pops up. When they say their on their way, you get a timer on screen in the top right corner. And when it finishes counting down, the even happens regardless of of your there or not. And nothing is recorded in the data. Just that it lost contact suddenly and that’s it.

I haven't run into that, always get a timer after listening to the final radio messsage, sounds like it glitched. Usually the radio message for it it comes up around day 10 for me, but there's probably some sequence and random timing involved. In other words, there's a sequence of 4 radio messages so it may depend on when you trigger them and when you listen to them.

You can actually ignore the Sunbeam altogether and it won't impact the game. If you're out of the area but within line of sight when the Sunbeam arrives you see a graphic of it entering the atmosphere and getting blown up then a message about it over the PDA. If out of sight, you'll just get the PDA message.

There are several entrances to the LR, you're not ready if you can only go 200m...you need a vehicle upgrade console, its a structure you'll place on a wall in your Moonpool.

You'll want to find the Degasi bases, the deepest one is near an LR entrance, but I recommend the one in the trench.

Its really not that bad, use care in managing your engine speed when near genuine threats while piloting the Cyclops, don't panic, and you'll be fine. Create a minibase near the entrance in the LR or in the biome above so you have somewhere close to respawn, and keep your SeaGlide handy. Casper is a sweetheart, he mostly gets his head stuck in the skull when I pay him a visit.

And plant a couple Bulbo Trees in the control room of your Cyclops, you'll never want for water or food again. All Praise to the Prophet Shel Silverstein!

How to survive the sunbeam event in subnautica

Key Considerations for Surviving the Sunbeam Event in Subnautica:

  1. Preparation:

    • Ensure you have enough health and food supplies before the event. Stock up on Med Kits and nutrient blocks or cooked food.
    • Equip your best gear, including a high-capacity O2 tank and fins for faster swimming.
  2. Location Awareness:

    • The Sunbeam event occurs at a specific location (the landing site). Familiarize yourself with the coordinates (approximately -2000, -2000) to navigate quickly.
  3. Time Management:

    • The event has a set time frame. Make sure you arrive at the landing site well before the Sunbeam arrives (around 10-15 minutes prior) to avoid missing the event.
  4. Avoiding Hostile Creatures:

    • Be cautious of aggressive creatures like Reapers or Stalkers in the area. Use stealth or your Seamoth for protection when traveling to the site.
  5. Watch for Signals:

    • Pay attention to the radio signals leading up to the event. They provide important context and can help you prepare for what’s coming.

Takeaways:

  • Arrive early to the landing site to ensure you witness the event.
  • Bring health and food supplies to maintain your well-being during the encounter.
