What Redditors are Saying

What Happens During the Sunbeam Event in Subnautica

TL;DR The Sunbeam event involves a rescue attempt that ends with the ship being destroyed by an alien weapon. It is not crucial for game progression, but it provides significant narrative context.

Event Overview

The Sunbeam event is a scripted sequence in Subnautica where a rescue ship attempts to land on the planet but is shot down by a massive alien gun located on the island [5:1]. This event is triggered after receiving specific radio messages and results in a countdown timer appearing on your screen [4:1].

Timing and Triggers

The timing of the Sunbeam event can vary depending on when you listen to the radio messages. Some players experience the event early in their playthrough, while others encounter it much later [4:2]. If you miss the event by not being at the landing site, the PDA will imply what happened, but you won't see the visual spectacle [5:1][5:6].

Impact on Gameplay

While the Sunbeam event adds to the storyline, it does not affect gameplay progression significantly. Players can continue exploring and completing other objectives even if they miss the event [5:2][5:3]. The event primarily serves as a dramatic narrative moment rather than a pivotal gameplay mechanic.

Saving the Sunbeam

There is a challenge associated with disabling the Quarantine Enforcement Platform (QEP) before the Sunbeam arrives, which prevents its destruction [3:1]. However, this does not lead to an alternate ending or change the overall outcome, as the developers did not include a scenario where the Sunbeam successfully rescues the player [3:5].

Additional Details

Some players have reported experiencing unique visual phenomena during the event, such as eclipses, which are random occurrences and add to the atmospheric experience [2:1]. Despite these moments, the core event remains unchanged across playthroughs.

ORIGINAL POST

I am confused. I have ran through all my radio messages, i am 12 hours in, have a cyclops, have a prawn suit, visited the lost river. I havent gotten the sunbeam event yet. I got a message saying they were on their way but havent heard a thing since

Sounds like you might have missed it then. I’d your not around the area when it happens, you don’t hear anything. And nothing pops up. When they say their on their way, you get a timer on screen in the top right corner. And when it finishes counting down, the even happens regardless of of your there or not. And nothing is recorded in the data. Just that it lost contact suddenly and that’s it.

I haven't run into that, always get a timer after listening to the final radio messsage, sounds like it glitched. Usually the radio message for it it comes up around day 10 for me, but there's probably some sequence and random timing involved. In other words, there's a sequence of 4 radio messages so it may depend on when you trigger them and when you listen to them.

You can actually ignore the Sunbeam altogether and it won't impact the game. If you're out of the area but within line of sight when the Sunbeam arrives you see a graphic of it entering the atmosphere and getting blown up then a message about it over the PDA. If out of sight, you'll just get the PDA message.

Is this scripted during the sunbeam explosion?

Posted by tanklord99 · in r/subnautica · 2 years ago

I was doing another playthrough of Subnautica because its been a few years since I last played. And during the sunbeam landing/explosion scene, I had a total eclipse and it looked so cool, but I don't remember it happening last time I played.

[spoiler] sunbeam event question

Posted by io_inachis · in r/subnautica · 2 years ago

I finished my first playthrough 2 weeks ago; one thing that stood out to me was that the sunbeam event chain seemed to progress very slowly: The final event, where the ship was destroyed, happened on day 60 - by this time I had received all lifepod messages except for pod #2. (But the slow pace did not really bother me, as I was busy exploring wrecks & building a big, beautiful base anyway.)

Now I started a new game. It's only day 9 and the 40 minute countdown has just appeared on my screen. I have not really explored a lot at this point, I have no base, and I have only received 3 of the lifepod messages via the radio so far.

This time difference seems extreme to me. Of course I am faster in my second game, since I already know how to collect resources & craft basic tools, but I don't think that's good enough to explain it? Are there any weird triggers for the sunbeam events?

I think it just depends on when you listen to the radio is when they'll come for you. But you can save the Sunbeam which not many people know about, or at least don't care to save it.

Its not really that important in itself. Head over to where the landing site was supposed to be. While you did miss one of the best parts of the story, you should be able to piece together what happened.

The PDA should have implied something happened to the Sunbeam... Won't spoil it, you would have seen it if you were there. What happened: >!A giant laser gun on the island shot down the Sunbeam and destroyed it and it's crew.!< Basically, just continue playing the game as normal.

[Spoilers] Just finished the game, thoughts about sunbeam.

Posted by shadowboi04 · in r/subnautica · 2 years ago

I was disappointed to hear that saving the sunbeam (disabling the alien laser before it arrives) doesn't trigger any sort of alternate ending, but instead gives a unique radio message about space debris being in the way. While Subnautica isn't a particularly long game, I felt that most of the work went into curing the virus rather than actually making a rocket ship to escape on, so it would make sense to reward the player for getting the cure *before* the sunbeam arrives. What are other people's thoughts on this?

I think the normal ending is great by the way, and I loved the game as whole 10/10, I just wish this was an option for players on their second or third play through.

Subnautica, along with it's horror feel, is supposed to make you feel isolated, that their is no one left but you. The Sunbeam Event is meant to solidify that feeling, that you are once again alone. If there was an alternative in which the Sunbeam could actually save you. While cool on paper, can make the game feel less alone, because you know that anyone could just stop by and pick you up now.

But idk that's just me.

Is it possible to disable the cannon before the sunbeam arrives?

Posted by AmbassadorBonoso · in r/subnautica · 2 years ago

This question just popped into my head. Is it possible and if so what happens to the sunbeam? Or would that be a sequence break and the sunbeam still gets shot down due to that being a set story beat?

It is possible, as the Sunbeam event is triggered by answering that radio message. What happens then is that the Sunbeam is unable to reach the planet because of space debris or something.

Note if you disable the cannon in the time between receiving the radio message that starts the timer and them arriving, the game breaks sort of, it will never arrive and the timer won't ever go away

He leaves because if the sunbeam doesn't come they send a radio message saying they couldn't come because there is a lot of debris in the room.

So if you read that radio message it will go away.

Okay, so I just started yesterday, game's paused, here's where I'm at so far:

I got 2 minutes until the Sunbeam touches down.

I'm infront of some cool alien structure.

I have seen the Aurora blow up.

I haven't gotten any new vehicles yet.

Did I go too far in? Or am I meant to be here right now.

(I've already been inside and explored a little, I'll make a new save if Sunbeam is an ending)

It's an exploration game - there is some guidance from radio calls and PDA entries, but you're meant to just travel around looking into stuff

There's plenty left to do, you can keep busy for a while yet!
