TL;DR The Sunbeam event involves a rescue attempt that ends with the ship being destroyed by an alien weapon. It is not crucial for game progression, but it provides significant narrative context.
Event Overview
The Sunbeam event is a scripted sequence in Subnautica where a rescue ship attempts to land on the planet but is shot down by a massive alien gun located on the island [5:1]. This event is triggered after receiving specific radio messages and results in a countdown timer appearing on your screen
[4:1].
Timing and Triggers
The timing of the Sunbeam event can vary depending on when you listen to the radio messages. Some players experience the event early in their playthrough, while others encounter it much later [4:2]. If you miss the event by not being at the landing site, the PDA will imply what happened, but you won't see the visual spectacle
[5:1]
[5:6].
Impact on Gameplay
While the Sunbeam event adds to the storyline, it does not affect gameplay progression significantly. Players can continue exploring and completing other objectives even if they miss the event [5:2]
[5:3]. The event primarily serves as a dramatic narrative moment rather than a pivotal gameplay mechanic.
Saving the Sunbeam
There is a challenge associated with disabling the Quarantine Enforcement Platform (QEP) before the Sunbeam arrives, which prevents its destruction [3:1]. However, this does not lead to an alternate ending or change the overall outcome, as the developers did not include a scenario where the Sunbeam successfully rescues the player
[3:5].
Additional Details
Some players have reported experiencing unique visual phenomena during the event, such as eclipses, which are random occurrences and add to the atmospheric experience [2:1]. Despite these moments, the core event remains unchanged across playthroughs.
I am confused. I have ran through all my radio messages, i am 12 hours in, have a cyclops, have a prawn suit, visited the lost river. I havent gotten the sunbeam event yet. I got a message saying they were on their way but havent heard a thing since
Sounds like you might have missed it then. I’d your not around the area when it happens, you don’t hear anything. And nothing pops up. When they say their on their way, you get a timer on screen in the top right corner. And when it finishes counting down, the even happens regardless of of your there or not. And nothing is recorded in the data. Just that it lost contact suddenly and that’s it.
I had the rendevous point pop up on my screen but didn't get any indication of when It would arrive. annoying
Well that event in itself isnt much interesting, but what you find next to it is.
I haven't run into that, always get a timer after listening to the final radio messsage, sounds like it glitched. Usually the radio message for it it comes up around day 10 for me, but there's probably some sequence and random timing involved. In other words, there's a sequence of 4 radio messages so it may depend on when you trigger them and when you listen to them.
You can actually ignore the Sunbeam altogether and it won't impact the game. If you're out of the area but within line of sight when the Sunbeam arrives you see a graphic of it entering the atmosphere and getting blown up then a message about it over the PDA. If out of sight, you'll just get the PDA message.
I was doing another playthrough of Subnautica because its been a few years since I last played. And during the sunbeam landing/explosion scene, I had a total eclipse and it looked so cool, but I don't remember it happening last time I played.
Lucky timing, that sounds dope. Did you get pictures?
sadly no because this is my first time playing it on PC (played it on PS4 ages ago) and I forgot how to clip it and by then it was too late to clip or screenshot
Eclipses are a bit random, so you were just lucky
I have a feeling that this also happens if you are not in the mountains when they arrive, even with the QEP active.
No, you just don't see them blow up
Yeah you get a narration of it from your PDA instead, talking about how it detected a large power surge and could no longer detect the ship.
No they're not? This is the special message you get when you disable QEP before the sunbeam tries to land. Idk why this is top comment.
I’ve played the game before. I know I’m not getting picked up by the Sunbeam, but I did want to challenge myself to disable the QEP before they arrive.
Ah hahah fair enough I have been watching this game since development so I know a decent amount about the game
>Challenge myself
>Look inside
>Delays sunbeam by not touching the radio for 11 hours
Idk, please tell me
Sadly the devs didn’t add a sunbeam ending their deaths unavoidable
Naaaa. Wait for OP to update. You’ll see lol
Re enable the QEP so when Alterra comes back, they get a nasty surprise.
Space ligma😭
I finished my first playthrough 2 weeks ago; one thing that stood out to me was that the sunbeam event chain seemed to progress very slowly: The final event, where the ship was destroyed, happened on day 60 - by this time I had received all lifepod messages except for pod #2. (But the slow pace did not really bother me, as I was busy exploring wrecks & building a big, beautiful base anyway.)
Now I started a new game. It's only day 9 and the 40 minute countdown has just appeared on my screen. I have not really explored a lot at this point, I have no base, and I have only received 3 of the lifepod messages via the radio so far.
This time difference seems extreme to me. Of course I am faster in my second game, since I already know how to collect resources & craft basic tools, but I don't think that's good enough to explain it? Are there any weird triggers for the sunbeam events?
You listened to the radio later in the first save.
I think it just depends on when you listen to the radio is when they'll come for you. But you can save the Sunbeam which not many people know about, or at least don't care to save it.
I wasn’t at the landing site when the countdown ran out. But I just read that the Sunbeam is important to progressing the story. I imagine there’s still gotta be a way to progress though, right?
Sun beam isn’t important to gameplay don’t worry
Its not really that important in itself. Head over to where the landing site was supposed to be. While you did miss one of the best parts of the story, you should be able to piece together what happened.
Sorry, you missed your chance. You're stuck on the planet forever now.
Oh shut up. That's not true.
It is! I played it out, and got the ending where Riley grows old, on the planet, and has seven kids with a Gasopod. Honestly, they could have looked worse...
The PDA should give you a clue what happened to it.
The PDA should have implied something happened to the Sunbeam... Won't spoil it, you would have seen it if you were there. What happened: >!A giant laser gun on the island shot down the Sunbeam and destroyed it and it's crew.!< Basically, just continue playing the game as normal.
I was disappointed to hear that saving the sunbeam (disabling the alien laser before it arrives) doesn't trigger any sort of alternate ending, but instead gives a unique radio message about space debris being in the way. While Subnautica isn't a particularly long game, I felt that most of the work went into curing the virus rather than actually making a rocket ship to escape on, so it would make sense to reward the player for getting the cure *before* the sunbeam arrives. What are other people's thoughts on this?
I think the normal ending is great by the way, and I loved the game as whole 10/10, I just wish this was an option for players on their second or third play through.
Yeah I remember the first time I got the cure before the sunbeam, I've never been more excited, and yet.. nothing
I also thought it would be fun if you were able to build the rocket befire the sunbeam too
You can build the rocket before the sun beam
Speedruns gets the rocket in under an hour
I mean I actually kind of like that it doesn’t save you. Because That not only does It ruin they continuity of it in below zero but the feelings you get from escaping on your own are so good that you don’t need another ending.
Subnautica, along with it's horror feel, is supposed to make you feel isolated, that their is no one left but you. The Sunbeam Event is meant to solidify that feeling, that you are once again alone. If there was an alternative in which the Sunbeam could actually save you. While cool on paper, can make the game feel less alone, because you know that anyone could just stop by and pick you up now.
But idk that's just me.
This question just popped into my head. Is it possible and if so what happens to the sunbeam? Or would that be a sequence break and the sunbeam still gets shot down due to that being a set story beat?
It is possible, as the Sunbeam event is triggered by answering that radio message. What happens then is that the Sunbeam is unable to reach the planet because of space debris or something.
Note if you disable the cannon in the time between receiving the radio message that starts the timer and them arriving, the game breaks sort of, it will never arrive and the timer won't ever go away
He leaves because if the sunbeam doesn't come they send a radio message saying they couldn't come because there is a lot of debris in the room.
So if you read that radio message it will go away.
Yes it is possible to save the Sunbeam.
Sunbeam, my little sunbeam, You make me happy when you save the day, Little sunbeam my little sunbeam, Please no one take my sunbeam aw........ Well Fk*
(sing to be my sunshine)
Good song, but it’s in the wrong order. There’s one more line before the next “sunshine my little sunshine.”
Yes
Yeah it is possible but you are not getting saved.
It's almost scary the first time, you're not too deep and all of a sudden it just starts getting darker...and darker...then pitch black...and then it goes back to normal lol
For some reason I thought that was just how the sun sets in Subnautica. I didn't realize it was a special event 🤦🫣
Same, I thought huh this sunset went REAL DARK REAL FAST and it never occurred to me it was an eclipse 🤦🏼♀️
Edit: Nevermind
Edit 2: holy shiznick thanks for that shiny star
FYI... the outcome you faced is inevitable, so don't lose any sleep over it thinking you somehow lost the game. There's no way to change that fate.
SPOILERS
You use to be able to prevent the Sunbeam from being destroyed by shutting down the cannon in time. Does that not work anymore?
I think he’s talking about how >!you’re still stranded regardless. I’m pretty sure you can still save the sunbeam.!<
No, it doesn't. Turn the gun off > gun fires.
the canon recognises you are infected and does not accept your quarantine shutdown because its the sole reason its activated in the first place.
oh you can still disable the gun, but it fires anyways.
You can never board the Sunbeam, but you can save it; if you complete the main story before it arrives, you instead a message that the debris field is too dense and they can’t land, but will send for help.
I assume nothing happens once they send for help, right?
Well if you finish the complete story line before they get there they do something different will not spoil it though
Yeah you can stay when the Sunbeam arrives.
I mean the 'when' is never in doubt. It most certainly makes it down to the surface
Best edit ever
Okay, so I just started yesterday, game's paused, here's where I'm at so far:
I got 2 minutes until the Sunbeam touches down.
I'm infront of some cool alien structure.
I have seen the Aurora blow up.
I haven't gotten any new vehicles yet.
Did I go too far in? Or am I meant to be here right now.
(I've already been inside and explored a little, I'll make a new save if Sunbeam is an ending)
It's an exploration game - there is some guidance from radio calls and PDA entries, but you're meant to just travel around looking into stuff
There's plenty left to do, you can keep busy for a while yet!
yeah I kinda gathered when my ride got shot out of the sky 😭😭
There are alternatives to that, depending on how you play - but you'd still have a lot of game left to play even if that had been changed!
just wait and see
DID MY TICKET OUT JUST GET BOMBED
Technically it got shot 🤓
Bro really thought this game was that easy 🤣🤣🤣
Uhh... Kaboom?
Yes, Rico. Kaboom.
If you managed to heal and turn off the cannon you'd get this dialogue sunbeam alternate ending
