Transferring WhatsApp data from one phone to another can be straightforward or complex, depending on the devices involved and whether backups are available. Here are some key considerations and methods based on user discussions.
Using Cloud Backups
For both Android and iOS users, having a cloud backup is crucial. If you have a Google Drive backup (for Android) or an iCloud backup (for iPhone), transferring your WhatsApp data to a new phone is relatively simple. You can restore your chat history during the setup process on your new device [1:1]. However, if there is no backup, retrieving data becomes significantly more challenging
[2:1].
Transferring Between Android Devices
To transfer WhatsApp data between Android devices, ensure that your chat history is backed up to Google Drive. On your new phone, install WhatsApp, verify your number, and choose to restore your chat history from Google Drive when prompted [4].
Transferring From Android to iPhone
Transferring WhatsApp data from Android to iPhone requires additional steps. The "Move to iOS" app can facilitate this process, but it requires the iPhone to be factory reset before initiating the transfer [3:3],
[5:1]. This method has been reported as successful by several users, though it may require multiple attempts
[5:2].
Manual Methods and Challenges
Some users have attempted manual transfers by copying WhatsApp data files directly from one phone to another. This involves moving files like "msgstore.db.crypt" from the old phone to the new one. However, success with this method varies, and it often fails at different stages of the process [4:2].
Considerations for Broken Phones
If your old phone is broken, accessing data can be difficult unless you have a prior backup. Without a functioning screen, creating a new backup becomes nearly impossible [1],
[2]. In such cases, using previously made backups is the only viable option.
Recommendations
By following these guidelines, you can increase the chances of successfully transferring your WhatsApp data to a new device.
Is there any way to transfer data from an old phone to a new phone even though the screen on the old one is damaged and you can’t bring up the transfer menu
I had an android phone in which I totally broke the screen so I couldn't use it. I had an insurance replacement so before I sent the phone to the insurers, I fortunately was able to mount and copy the whole OS to my computer including Whatsapp and all its data.
Is there a way of porting this to a new phone so all Whatsapp and pictures/vidoes are available? To add insult to injury, I had been using the Google Drive backup. But unbeknownst to me, it turns out that if there is no activity on the backup then Google will silently delete it without warning. I found this out when I tried to see if the backup was still there only to find it had been deleted 3 months previously. So just putting the information out there so you don't suffer the same experience as I have. If you're using a backup like Google Drive make sure you access it so it not deemed dormant.
The reason I couldn't access it is because I moved to an Apple iPhone which doesn't use Google Drive. So now I have an Apple phone with new Whatsapp data. I'm going back to Android so if I do so how can I merge the new data with the data from my old phone?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
I want to transfer my data from my android phone to my new iPhone Any suggestions
I want to transfer data without factory reset
iPhone has to be factory reset : https://faq.whatsapp.com/686469079565350
Hello everyone,
Thank you for your time. This is not an ordinary request; I'll explain.
I need your kind help please regarding helping me transfer my WhatsApp application (complete with its history) from one phone to another. But there's a catch.
All "conventional"/recommended methods have failed. Here's what I tried:
- Backing up my conversation history to Google Drive then attempting to restore on the new phone
- Manually copying multiple "msgstore.db.crypt" files from the old phone to the new one and attempting to back up from all of them
- Deleting all backups on both Google Drive and phone memory and generating brand new ones, then trying all the above methodologies again
- Deleting all WhatsApp media and doing all of the above steps again and again
- Waiting 6 months (!!!) and attempting to backup again, doing all of the above steps
- Making absolutely sure that both WhatsApp versions are the exact same version
- Making absolutely sure that both WhatsApp versions are the latest version
In all attempts, the WhatsApp restore process fails at 24%.
Now on the bright side, when I (am forced to) go back to my old dying phone, it doesn't even go through a backup/restore process because all the data is already there. It just boots up WhatsApp at the state it was before I left it.
So my request is: I would please like help manually "excavating" my WhatsApp data from my old phone's system files to manually "plant" that data in my new phone's system files and all. I tried researching this and doing it myself but I don't know enough about Android's system file structure.
This is super important for me, because I have critical court evidence on there that I must preserve, and I cannot afford to "start fresh". Sadly, my old phone is now dying on me.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much.
Thank you very much. Unfortunately I've already tried this but it didn't work.
At what step did it fail?
My mom recently got a new phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 to Samsung Galaxy S7), with the exact same number & had to reinstall WhatsApp. I was trying to help her get all her messages & contacts on the new phone but nothing I was doing worked. I backed everything to Google Drive but I can’t figure out how to transfer everything over. The WhatsApp FAQ states a “restore” message should pop up but that never happened. I’m honestly getting very frustrated & idk what to do.
You can copy the whole "Whatsapp" folder from her old phone's internal storage and paste it in the new one.
Then, during the initial setup, disable wifi / mobile data (so that it will skip checking for a backup at Google drive). Then, it will look for the files within the internal storage and will prompt you to restore.
same as title
Unless one is WhatsApp and the other is WhatsApp business, you can’t transfer two accounts to one new phone
I am facing quite a difficult problem.. I'm switching up from a Huawei P Smart 2021 to a Samsung Note 10+ and I have not been able to transfer and kind of data to my new phone. My biggest issue is with WhatsApp though. Google services are not available on my Huawei, so for the 3+ years I've had it there was no WhatsApp backup to my Google account. But it is backed up in the internal storage. I tried to manually restore the data using an SD card (I copied everything from the old phone to the sd card and then to the new phone), but the whatsapp on my new phone doesn't detect it/ it doesn't back it up. It only ask for Google drive back up, which I don't have.. I've tried following many tutorials, but nothing works. I really need to transfer my whatsapp data Does anyone have any solutions?
You can't. Had the same issue and wasn't able to recover my messages from my old phone.
I'm having the same issue with no luck
Update! I was finally able to do it!
can you tell us how?
I had Gspace installed (a Google emulator), so I installed WhatsApp inside Gspace, it detected the last backup I had and saved it to my Google account. Installed WhatsApp in my new cellphone with my Google account and it immediately restored all my WP conversations.
I need to move whatsapp backup from huawei to a different brand phone and cannot find how to do this. Any help here?
You can install whatsapp through gspace or gbox on the Huawei phone, back-up on google drive, then sign in into whatsapp on the new phone and restore from google drive.
Connect the phone to a pc, copy WHATSAPP folder, connect the new phone, copy that folder to the same location on phone and done.
But no, it is not working. Same folder, but on new phone it is ignored and asks for the phone number.
Yeah, it's ok. After the phone number, Whatsapp will prompt "a secutrity copy was found on this device, do you want to use it? And say yes.
Thank you so much! So no encryption to deal with, because whileas on Huawei it says it is encrypted I cannot turn it off, as that menu part is completely missing from chat settings.
Do you have google drive on your mobile?
i'm really scared to change the number in my old phone since i really don't wanna lose my chats
Do not change your number on your old phone until you transfer your WhatsApp chats, first, back up your chats from the old number, then use WhatsApp’s Change Number feature within your old phone’s settings so your chat history will be kept and safely moved. After updating to the new number, install WhatsApp on your new phone with the same Google Drive or iCloud account and restore your chat backup when the app prompts you, ensuring you do not lose any message history.
I hope this helps.
Backup can be restored to the same number . It cannot be restored to a different number. WhatsApp says
If you’re changing phone numbers and want to keep your chat history, you must first change numbers on your old phone.
https://faq.whatsapp.com/1197347060992858/?cms_platform=android&locale=en_US
After doing this.. you need to back up so that the backup has the new number.
Then attempt restore with the backup
hey i tried doing this, but for some reason when it comes to the back up step it says that there's no backup affiliated to my google account even though when i check on my google drive, there is one. do u have any advice for this?
Oh, you can back up your WhatsApp chats to your phone’s internal storage or SD card instead of Google Drive. When you set up WhatsApp on your new device, it will automatically search for and restore from that local backup if a Google Drive account isn’t linked.
How to backup to SD -> https://www.fonetool.com/app-management/backup-whatsapp-to-sd-card.html
The backup will not be restored to a different number.
The phone number used for backing up and the one used for restoring must be the same.

Not sure why this sub can't get this detail right
thank you so much! i hope this works.
Also. Back up first.
