Installing and Setting Up KakaoTalk
To use KakaoTalk on your computer, you first need to download the KakaoTalk PC app. This is available for both Windows and Mac operating systems. Once downloaded, install the application and log in using your existing KakaoTalk account credentials. If you don't have an account yet, you'll need to create one on your mobile device first, as the initial registration requires a phone number [5:4].
Making Calls and Video Calls
KakaoTalk's desktop version supports voice and video calls, which can be particularly useful for activities like fansigns or fancalls. Users have reported successfully using their laptops for these purposes, noting that it's important to test your setup beforehand to ensure that your microphone and camera are working properly [1:2]. Practicing with a friend can help you get comfortable with the interface and troubleshoot any issues before an important call
[1:3].
Screen Recording and Additional Tools
If you want to record your calls, tools like OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) can be used on Windows computers to capture video and audio from your screen [1:2]. For Mac users, QuickTime Player offers built-in screen recording capabilities. It's advisable to test these tools in advance to ensure they work smoothly with KakaoTalk.
User Experience and Performance
While some users find the KakaoTalk PC app functional, others have criticized it for being unreliable and occasionally crashing [5]. Issues such as non-responsive behavior and frequent pop-ups have been mentioned, though some users have found ways to mitigate these by editing host files to block certain IPs
[5:1]. Despite these criticisms, many still prefer it over other messaging apps due to its features and integration with the Korean market
[5:5].
Customization and Themes
The KakaoTalk PC app allows for some customization, including theme options like dark mode. Users can choose between different themes to personalize their experience without additional costs [5:2]. This feature can enhance usability, especially for those who spend long hours on the platform.
By following these steps and tips, you can effectively use KakaoTalk on your computer for communication and various online interactions.
Hey there, I'm sure there's some people around here that have won online fansigns before, so I was wondering if anyone participated in the call using their computer instead of the phone. :)
I've applied to fansigns and while the chances aren't big, I want to be prepared. I have an android phone and a windows laptop. Kakaotalk is installed on both but I've never had the opportunity to use KKT for calls.
Now I'm wondering if using the desktop app on the laptop would be just as fine as the phone app, aka does calling work on laptops, would I see the idol alright, would they see me alright (phone vs laptop format/horizontal vs vertical)?
And also whether someone knows if you can screen record calls on laptop?
I typically use my laptop for video calls and they see you totally fine! I would say to make sure to practice with a friend and make your laptop's audio works.
For screenrecording, if you have a Mac you are able to screenrecord through Quicktime player. Not sure about other laptops tho.
Edit: I think my friend used OBS to screenrecord with a Windows laptop
Thank you for the tips, I'll need to look into OBS~
I’ve seen plenty of people use their computer/laptop for fansigns and it went just fine. I don’t have the answers to all of your questions, but I suggest seeing whether screen recording and everything works by doing some test calls
That's a good idea, I'll have to ask if my friends have Kakaotalk or if some family member would be willing to install it and test it out with me. Thank you for your reply!
does your laptop have a mic? that's good to know before the call
Yes it does!

hello, I have a question, do we also need to have it to see the emoticons sent to us in kakaotalk? (I use it with a foreign number)
What do you mean "have it"? If you mean the emoticon, no, it will still show up on your Kakao. The only thing you can't use with a foreign number is to use hashtags, that's how it was earlier at least.
I downloaded it for fun, is there anyone else?
Most of us with Korean friends have it.
Constantly flakey, sometimes doesn't minimize, not very responsive, occasionally crashes - this is what you get when a country encourages anti-competitive practices and singular companies get to dominate an area of business.
What do you mean? I have a dark mode theme on my kakao right now.
Edit: I just went and looked, and there's a dark, light, "follow device setting," options, as well as several free themes (I don't pay for them) that are all dark mode esque, like "black"
PC, not mobile.
The only reason why they are so big now is that they were the first. When smartphones started coming out it was the only viable messenger in the Korean market, so they monopolized the market fairly easily. I saw it all real-time and this thing was even shittier back then than it is now, but it literally was the only option there was. Since Korean government don't really regulate monopoly, even the government came aboard and started offloading a lot of their job to the messenger (i.e., public announcement, certificates), further enforcing their position. The rest is history.
I remembered when they tried to hit south East Asian markets, I remember trying to get a free doll or smthn but they tried getting into Indonesia and was doing fairly well until line just started promoting like crazy, offering free stickers, idol collabs and just entering first and the rest is history, but people still flocked to whatsapp in the end lmao line’s dead
Isnt line the main messager people use in Japan?
Also, considering the fact that SMS messaging at the time wasn't free and you had to pay per message, a free messaging app was guaranteed to succeed. At the time, most people were using NateOn Messenger on the PC. Huge mistake by NateOn to not move fast enough to bring their client to smartphones.
Better than WhatsApp I guess
I like how the advertisement pops up before the app does.
You can get rid of most popups for potplayer and kakao talk by blocking some IPs on your pc by editing the host file.
Can you provide some more info on this? Would love to start blocking these pesky ads
Almost every Korean App or online experience feels like a scam site. Zero UI, overcomplicated integrations, certificate galore and pop-up ads first. Absolute rubbish!
What's wrong with the app, I've never had any issues?

Korean apps suck because the country doesn't do anything about the crazy monopoly so theres zero competition, and the desktop Kakaotalk app gives you ads. Even if you "end task" on task manager it turns itself back on to give you the ad. its insane. so i uninstalled it using control pannel, but the ads havent gone away. i dont know what to do, i cant find anything on taskmanager and the ad doesnt say where its from.
Windows 10
Edit: I think i found the culprit, i have a thing running called "HncUpdateService (32 bit)" that pops back up even when i end task-ed and when I googled it it seems to be related to hancom, but when I click "open file location" it says "config.msi is not accessible. access is denied"
Edit: i found a file called adfit under the kakaotalk thing on registery, and its what kakaotalk calls its advertisement system. i dont know if i can just delete it im looking into it. have i mentioned im not good with computers?
Edit: i deleted both. good news, my computer hasent exploded. bad news, the fucking HncUpdateService (32 bit) thing is still there. i think its going to haunt me as a ghost for the rest of my life
Edit: I think I defeated it?? http://www.windowexe.com/bbs/board.php?q=hncupdateservice-exe-c-program-files-hnc-office-2018-hncutils-service-ct (saved on archive.org) <---followed this tutorial. first i disabled it by "[Control Panel] - [Administrative Tools] - [Services], stop the service in properties, and set the startup type to Disabled", then I deleted it for extra measure. just run cmd as admin, then type: sc delete "HncUpdateService_2024_Viewer". HncUpdateService_2024_Viewer might be different for you, on the website it said something else. You can find it under services, just copy the Display name and replace the text.
TL;DR: What i did:
not sure if it worked or not, and if it did what worked, but i havent gotten an ad in a hot minute so fingers crossed lolz
If it is not visible in Windows start menu, use autoruns from microsoft sysinternals suite to find entry - it could be in startup, services or scheduled tasks.
there is an entry in windows registry that controls which apps are started at boot, also take a look at "startup" tab of task manager
There's nothing on startup, and I couldnt find anything under current user>software>microsoft>windows>run
but
under current user>software i found kakaotalk and hnc. can i just delete it? idk how registery works and im scared to touch anything, please help me oh wise one
yes you can delete it where ever you see it on your PC
Hey all, I found this github repository where you could block ads on kakao PC.
https://github.com/real21c/kakao-noadv
There was a commit in April of this year but I'm wondering if anyone uses this and if it's actually working. Thanks.
You can use something like pyhole: https://github.com/pyhole/pyhole, instead of nextdns, it all depends on your personal skill level deploying the Raspberry Pi with the installation. With this you will block even the ads in the tv.
What ads?
Can't confirm whether that repo works, but...
It's probably more practical to use custom DNS to block ads on all devices on your network (wifi), or at least your PC.
Something like a raspberry pi--a very small computer--running ad-blocking software is not uncommon, but technical, and IMO there are better and easier alternatives.
I'd recommend using NextDNS. To block on all devices, you'd either install it on your router or change the DNS setting on your router to use NextDNS.
You could also (I'm gonna assume you use Windows), change your Windows internet settings to use custom DNS, which you can easily learn how to do from a Google search.
NextDNS https://nextdns.io/ of course has further instructions for many cases.
As a person that grew in a tech-y household, i lived the fantasy that people understood how to work with computers until we actually had our first Computer classes in school and i saw how hard it was for others. Yet up until this day i am astounded when people can't and refuse to learn to use them properly, yet spend hours per day on Instagram or Facebook and complain how difficult their work is. Only if they took their time to learn to type without looking at the keys and left clicking to copy and paste. It is surprising that they can type on their phones keyboard so fast but on computers they have to look for the keys for so long
You have to change the subreddit's name now r/professionalPCists
Fire explorer is lit!
I think that might actually be a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo, going by the front cover.
Where is this from? I've never really gotten into anime but it was a fun clip!
Looks like it's called Comic Girls. If you've never watched anime my suggestion (as well as many) would be Cowboy Bebop. Good blend of action, comedy and drama with a killer sound track. Only one season so it's not like you're committing to 10+ years of content.
I agree with the other suggestions but if you particularly like the slice-of-life girls genre, I 1000% recommend Nichijou. Total classic
She rerouted the graphic card output to board's internal connector.
Truly a genius.
Kinky
But most of the power cords are 2-prong US style without ground.
NO SHE SAT ON THE COMPUTER
Edit: professional PC-ist
there was 3 plugs besides the dvi and ethernet, probably for keyboard/mouse/speakers (or a tablet since she's drawing). the keyboard was wireless but it's possible the dongle was just on a cable
I'm getting stuff together to have a go at becoming a KJ, and right now I'm looking at what kind of laptop (or maybe tablet?) I'm going to need starting off. I'm going to be using Karafun for everything at the start, and probably buy unavailable/better versions of certain songs based on request and need. That being said, what with Karafun Pro having apps for mobile devices as well (do those function the same as the KJ-ing software proper?), what's the most basic of requirements for a laptop/tablet to be able to run this?
Obviously I'll need to be able to connect to a monitor. I'm not sure how broadcasting would work, so I'm planning on making sure there's an HDMI output. I'd prefer to make sure I can keep the workstation secured to prevent theft or wild beer tosses from destroying my hardware. I'm looking at a few options right now, but I'm curious to see what you folks here think. Is this overkill? What would you do if you had to pull together a karaoke setup for a party or something, starting from scratch on a limited budget?
Thanks in advance!
Any modern i5 or later machine with 8+ gigs of ram and HDMI out will do. I would also recommend going with an SSD or m2 drive. I load Windows 11, my karaoke hosting app (plus some useful utilities), and me entire karaoke library on a 500gig SSD/m2.
My fleet of laptops are all i7 machines with 8-16 gigs of RAM, and SSD or m2 drives. We only use tablets for filler music.
It was mentioned below that one will need a headphone jack, but I use Allen & Heath ZED series mixers that have USB connections for audio. The sound quality is superior to analog headphone jacks. It's also real easy to break a headphone plug off in the port and you only have one. Most laptops have a minimum of 2 USB ports and it is much more difficult to break those.
I‘m new to this sub and just curious, what do people actually do as a KJ? I mean it‘s not really comparable to a DJ right, because people just put songs in queue and sing them themselves?
No. A KJ is someone who hosts Karaoke events (like parties or nights at a club/bar/venue) ... so you're responsible for keeping the list of people who want to sing and what song they want to sing, and making sure you've got it all lined up in your software, and then you're calling people by name for their turn, having to say nice fun stuff to keep the crowd entertained, somtimes (at parties or reception events) having to make special announcements, play special songs, keep a list of regular songs to be played when people aren't singing, take requests for those songs, and generally keep the music going, all while making sure none of your equipment gets stolen and none of your stuff gets ruined or broken by drunk people sloshing their drinks around. Understand now?
Oh makes sense I guess. At thr karaoke bar I go to they just use Karafun and you scan a qr code to join the session, so you put songs in queue with your name and it will show up on screen when it‘s your turn. Very nice and uncomplicated
All currency is Australian dollars here.
Low specs are fine, and honestly are the way to go. Always have a backup laptop with you. Keep it cheap, you are working in an environment where drunk people are holding liquids. Buy refurbished ex-business laptops where reasonable; a laptop someone paid $1200 for in 2018 will be fine and you can probably get it for $300 or less.
If your venue serves beers in glasses, budget an additional $10-12 per show to replace liquid-damaged electronics. If it serves beers in bottles, drop this to $3-5. Factor this into your prices.
Bring one monitor of your own. You want to be able to connect to the venue's screens, but the show can go on with your monitor if needed. You will usually have an HDMI output to the venue screens. Your monitor should be cheap and nasty.
Laptops are far superior to tablets.
You will also need a 3.5mm jack output to your mixer.
Rod Stewart did "This Old Heart Of Mine" with Ronald Isley ... That one is a fun jam. Then you've got Hall & Oates.
A laptop with HDMI output is a must. A tablet works but I'm much more efficient running the software with a mouse. I run the output into a HDMI splitter so I can run multiple displays. As a KJ I like to have one display for the singer and at least one display for the crowd.
Until Win 10 is totally obsolete I prefer a Win 10 laptop with at least an i5 processor, minimum of 8GB ram, minimum 256GB SSD drive. I prefer Lenovo or Dell.
I don't secure the laptop for security nor do I let anyone with drinks come close enough to it to be an issue.
Karafun has mobile apps that allow singers to look up songs in the catalog and put songs into the queue. It also allows the KJ to control it remotely. You need to experiment with these functions to find out what settings works best for you.
IMO a setup for a party is different than running a show at a bar. At a party available space is usually limited so I look for a more compact setup. Running a show at a venue I concentrate on putting the best experience out there for the singers.
