TL;DR Yes, Stardew Valley has multiplayer functionality across various platforms, allowing players to collaborate on farming tasks and enjoy the game together.
Multiplayer Mechanics
Stardew Valley's multiplayer mode allows multiple players to join a single farm. The host player manages the farm, and up to three additional players can join as farmhands [4:1]. Players need to be on the same platform, as there is no cross-platform play
[4:2]. On PC, players can generate an invite code for friends to join their farm
[4:2].
Benefits of Multiplayer
Playing Stardew Valley in multiplayer can enhance the social aspect of the game. It allows players to divide tasks, such as farming, fishing, or mining, making it easier to accomplish more each day [1:3]. Multiplayer can be a fun way to experience the game with friends or partners, adding a collaborative dimension to gameplay
[1:5],
[3:5].
Challenges in Multiplayer
While multiplayer offers several benefits, it also introduces challenges. Time does not pause during events, which can make coordinating activities difficult [5:1]. Additionally, the host player has precedence in triggering events, which might require careful planning
[5:1]. Despite these challenges, many players find multiplayer enjoyable and rewarding
[5:3].
Platform Considerations
For those considering where to purchase Stardew Valley, it's important to note that multiplayer requires a PS Plus membership on PlayStation [5]. If you prefer playing without this subscription, Steam might be a better option for multiplayer
[5:2]. Mobile versions have experimental multiplayer modes, but they are designed for local play on the same Wi-Fi network
[2:1],
[2:2].
Overall, Stardew Valley's multiplayer mode provides an engaging way to share the farming experience with others, though it requires some coordination and platform compatibility considerations.
It just doesn't sound that fun to me to have to coordinate with another person on what's already a pretty easy game. Can anyone change my mind?
Interacting with friends is fun.
Unless you have shitty friends
I can do that already though?
Not in stardew.
Until now.
Me and my fiancee love the game, so it's neat to work together
Presumably (as someone who is waiting to play multiplayer for the Switch), it would be easier to get more done everyday. One person farms and takes care of animals, while you can go fish all day. Or one person farms while the other goes to the mines for the whole day, with no energy missing from watering crops.
And like it was already stated, it's a way to play a kick-ass game with a friend (or in my case, my girlfriend who is currently rocking her own solo on Switch).
I enjoy it, it's fun to collaborate and take a break from the usual. Everyone has different playstyles so it's always interesting and different.
You're right, this game isn't really marketed as hard or needing farmhands to actually succeed.
Having friends on your farm allows for the social group building aspects of doing the same activities together. Example: you can go to the movies/restaurant solo just fine, but for a lot of people, they'd prefer to go with others if possible.
The beautiful thing about Stardew is it doesn't force you into a specific playstyle. If that's not you, no worries. Enjoy it your way.
Does it have multiplayer now? I keep hearing about a secret multiplayer mode I wanna play with my friends would it work? I need to know so i buy it on mobile
it has multiplayer yes. while its experimental, it runs smoothly for me and my partner 98% of the time, and I only play on mobile. its designed to be played by people on the same wifi but if you use Nord VPN you can play with your friends anywhere as long as their devices are linked.
watch this video and it will explain how to do it: https://youtu.be/qycdffT1d5w?si=RGrn34fMS7LNcsT7
Thank you so much
I don’t think multi player works on mobile
With the new update they say there’s a multiplayer mode Its just in beta
There’s an experimental way to do multiplayer. CA posted a tutorial on his Twitter, or you could find it on this subreddit with relative ease if you use the search bar.
The latest update includes experimental multi-player mobile: https://www.stardewvalley.net/mobile-multiplayer-guide/
Do i need them to be on the same wifi as me?
Sorry, I don't know. There seem to be quite a few details in the link.
I love the multiplayer expansion, and I find it hard to play without a friend now. What has your experience been like? Do you play multiplayer a lot? Or do you prefer single player still?
I did about 20 days of single player on my let's play, then added a friend. 4 days in with her, and I'm having way more fun! Having someone else to good around with is a blast.
We finally power leveled my SO to get the recipe for quality sprinkles and my love for him has never been stronger.
My main Year 6 farm is where I relax, our multiplayer farm is where I have fun.
I prefer single player, unless my husband gets through his first solo run and we can start one up together. I just like doing things at my own pace and pausing whenever I want to.
Same here. For me, gaming is a solitary activity. My husband wanted to play Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U with me and made me promise not to play it without him.
Years later and we still haven't played it.
I play with an IRL friend and it’s so much fun whether we are on our laptops sitting right next to each other on the couch or playing from our own separate houses all the way across town, it’s really great.
I wanted multiplayer to work, but getting anyone to actually play longterm is like pulling teeth... so yea lately it's just been me and the hubby playing.
I was talking to a friend who doesn’t have the game and she asked if she got the game would we be able to play together I didn’t know and gave a very “uhhh maybe but idk and some other bullshit” answer so how does it work
as long as you're both on the same platform then it's easy to set it up.
Will she have it on the same platform that you do?
Depends on what systems you are playing on. Currently there is no cross system compatibility so if you are on PC and she is on Switch you are out of luck. I’m familiar with Switch so I can explain that and I suspect other systems have similar options (though there is no multiplayer on mobile).
Multiplayer works by having one player with the ‘host farm’ and others who can join in as ‘farm hands’. The host can play on the farm at any time, even solo. The farm hands can only play if the host is also playing. You can have up to three farm hands. All the data for the host and the farm hands is saved on the hosts device.
You can play with a local connection (via WiFi) if you are in close proximity or you can play via an internet connection even if you are apart (which naturally means you all have to be on line).
Each farm hand can level up skills and befriend townsfolk just like in a normal farm. You both contribute to the community centre/museum. You can chose at the set up of the host farm to have a shared money pot or to each have your own ‘purse’. There are a few other options you can set up too.
Hello hope this isn’t a stupid question- I want to get Stardew valley seems hella fun either on steam or PlayStation. I would prefer to get it on PS however to play multiplayer on PS I need a PS plus membership that I don’t want to get. Should I instead get it on steam if I want to have fun on multiplayer OR should I still get it on PS even tho I can’t play multiplayer
If you have friends who play Stardew on the PC, then get it on that.
It's great! I've probably spent 1/4 of my SV time on multiplayer.
Pros, you have more hands doing different things with separate energy bars. More fun with more people.
Con, The person who owns the farm has precedent when triggering events and coordinating those events sucks because time doesn't stop no matter what. You literally cannot pause the game. It's fine with casual playthroughs, but difficult when you try to optimize efficiency.
Try having others open inventory menus. Works on Switch split screen, dunno about other contexts.
They were planning on steam, so unless that works for local I just assume time keeps going. Also didn't realize that on the Switch split screen.
If you want to leave every cutscene and its magically 1 am and leave every building and your horse magically disappears, then yes. It really is a ton of fun, it's just hard to get used to with time constantly rolling
MP with gf/bf = wholesome and romantic MP with friends = chaotic
Your call.
like do you have to use a code to join the server everytime or once you put a code in does it stay? does a good connection depend on your internet or the hosts? is there even a host or does stardew have dedicated servers?
There is a host yes. They will get the normal farm house. You’ll have to build cabins for everyone else. You can choose to have them pre built and have them automatically placed spread out or close together, or place them in your own and collect the minimal supplies it takes to build them.
When my sister and I play after the initial invite code she can just join the farm when I load it up. I’m pretty sure you have to have a good connection for any online game as well! So just keep that in mind. It would suck to lose connection in the middle of a good day.
So the host needs to be on for someone to join the game? makes sense i suppose, it would suck to come back and find all your crops and stuff dead because your friend decided to play a bit without you
Yes. They cannot play unless you are on. There are mods you can look into that run the farm for your friends if you’re not on. It’s like multiplayer anytime or something?
My sister has been talking about maybe getting Stardew, I have Stardew on the switch. I was wondering if it’s possible to do multiplayer when she doesn’t have a switch.
Her options are mobile or her PC. I’m thinking it’s likely not but if it IS we’d like her to get the better version for that ^^
Stardew Valley does not support cross-platform play
Alright! Figured it didn’t but I wanted to be sure and I couldn’t find any answers that had been posted within the past year. Ty! ^^
So a friend of mine suggested I get this game, and I’m still very new. But I was curious about the multiplayer aspect of the game. How does it work?
Thanks to all who respond to this
It’s pretty configurable, basically you all share the farm (up to 4 people) and you can also open up your single player world to people. . You can chose in a new world how many cottages spawn if their far apart or close together. You can mess with money, weather it’s shared or individual and even toggle the profit margins. The one thing to know though is that in single player when you are interacting with something or in a cutscene/dialog time pauses but not in multiplayer.
There are ways to pause, but you’ll need to work out how. e.g. on Switch split screen, both players having menus open or a cut scene in progress is sufficient.
how do you pause multiplayer on PC?
Greatly appreciated, thank you
I'm thinking abougt picking it up so me and my GF can play together via LAN on PC.

I've heard good things about it, but realistically, neither I or her will ever play the single player.
Is the game just as good if it's multiplayer only?
I pretty much only play multiplayer! It might b kinda rough bc you're not accustomed to things yet. Like, I'm fairly familiar with the heart events' content from singleplayer, so I can skip/rush thru them in multi since time still passes and I don't want to pass out and lose our stuff. Or how I know the pace I should be making money at from singleplayer, and I try to earn similar levels in multi even tho it can be easy to let other players do all the work while you chat. It's not a big deal tho, the only real downside is you're not always able to play when you want to and even that can have its benefits lol
It's completely worth it multiplayer only. It's a great game to play with friends and family.
It's still fun, although it will make the game a little bit more difficult, since time doesn't pause in menus, during cutscenes, or while fishing i nmultiplayer. But unless you're trying to min-max, it shouldn't really affect anything
Yeah
I bought it for my wife, and two kids and then let my two kids borrow two crappy laptops to play it on (with Xbox controllers, since they haven’t mastered the way of the mouse yet, damned touchscreens making everyone soft).
We have a 4 person farm and it’s lovely. Downright fun.
So yeah, I bought it 4 times, but at $9 right now, it’s awesome and they love it. (And if ya’ll haven’t used Steam’s “Family View” mode, it was a sinch to get under 13 users to be nice and cozy. :)
I've been looking into getting a co op game for 3 of my friends and i have played SDV abit on singleplayer and i have no clue how the multiplayer is like, is it good? is it actual co op or more like drop in and out? pros and cons?
I'd say it's really good, and can be both actual coop or drop in/out, i'll list a few:
pros:
A multiplayer farming + life-sim game, not too heavy on pc/network requirements either.
Allows independence, but encourages cooperation very much.
cons:
shared money, this can be bad (esp if your friends are the kind that splurge or not tell when spending money), but shouldnt be an issue with proper communication
time trouble, time isnt handled that well in multiplayer, and cutscenes and such wastes a lot of time (time never freezes in multiplayer due to balance reasons, but even cutscenes won't freeze em)
It's pretty fun with multiple people. People can come and go as they please and everyone gains villager affection and skills differently. The big shared thing is money and resources you all farmed and put away.
How does going to sleep work in multiplayer (and time in general)?
Time moves at the same pace as normal if everyone is awake. In order to sleep, all players must sleep. Any of them not in their bed around 2 AM pass out and those sleeping don't get any debuff.
How different is it in terms of gameplay compared to singleplayer?
The biggest difference I've found is that the game time doesn't pause when you open menus. This makes it feel much faster paced to me. You have less time to make decisions when buying seeds, less time when fishing, can lose big chunks of time when you're getting things out of chests or opening geodes, etc. It can get a bit frantic at times.
(Also it doesn't pause during cut scenes, so it's quite possible to pass out at 2am because someone was talking to you.)
The same but with friends picking up your funiture and moving it in weird places.
Basically exactly the same.
It's drop in/out but the host of the farm always needs to be present
Not on the xbox. Just sayin. The one place you would expect it to be coop and its not.
Pc has priority since that was its release platform before any other console. Multiplayer is coming to all consoles prob in winter.
It’s a lot of fun, in my opinion!
Is stardew valley multiplayer
Key Considerations about Stardew Valley Multiplayer:
Co-op Gameplay: Yes, Stardew Valley offers a multiplayer mode where you can play with friends. You can host or join a farm together, sharing resources and responsibilities.
Platform Availability: Multiplayer is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. Ensure that all players are on the same platform or that cross-play is supported.
Hosting a Game: One player needs to host the game, and others can join through an invite or by connecting to the host's game via the game's menu.
Farm Management: In multiplayer, players can work together to manage the farm, but each player has their own inventory and skills. This allows for collaborative gameplay while maintaining individual progress.
Limitations: Up to four players can join a single game. Keep in mind that some features, like certain quests or events, may behave differently in multiplayer.
Recommendation: If you're looking to enjoy Stardew Valley with friends, gather a group and start a new farm together! It enhances the experience with shared goals and teamwork, making it a fun way to explore the game.
