TL;DR
User Experience and Content Accessibility
Webtoon is favored by many users for its accessibility and user-friendly interface. It offers a significant amount of free content, which appeals to readers who do not want to spend money frequently [1:1]
[2:5]. On the other hand, Tapas often requires payment to access certain content, which can be a drawback for some users
[1:1]. However, Tapas provides a better community experience with fewer pop-ups and easier navigation of subscriptions
[2:6].
Creator Support and Platform Features
Tapas is noted for treating its creators better, offering them more options and customization for their comics [2:7]
[5:1]. This includes allowing sound and GIFs in comics, which Webtoon restricts to featured/original creators only
[5:3]. Despite this, some creators express dissatisfaction with both platforms due to visibility issues and changes in support programs
[2:2]
[2:4].
Audience and Community
Webtoon has a larger audience, which increases the potential for gaining a substantial following [5:1]. The platform tends to attract younger readers, while Tapas is appreciated for having a more engaged community where creators can connect with readers
[3:1]. Some users have expressed that Tapas used to have a unique identity but has shifted focus under new management
[2:4].
Content Quality and Variety
Some users prefer Tapas for its perceived higher quality art and longer chapters [2]. However, others find it challenging to discover good content on Tapas compared to Webtoon
[1:3]. Both platforms offer a variety of genres, but personal preferences will heavily influence which platform is deemed superior in terms of content quality.
Platform Stability and Future Concerns
There are concerns about the stability of Tapas due to potential business changes, such as ownership transitions [4:4]. However, Tapas is reportedly profitable, and any sale would likely aim to maintain revenue streams
[4:1]
[4:6]. Users are understandably worried about losing access to purchased content if the platform were to shut down
[4:3].
Ultimately, whether Tapas or Webtoon is better depends on individual priorities—whether it's free content, community engagement, creator support, or platform features. Exploring both platforms may provide the best of both worlds.
Webtoon is more user-friendly, I feel, so I use it much more than Tapas.
Tapas content webtoons system
I feel like I can’t find good content on tapas. Do you have recs that are better than Webtoon? I’d love to expand. (I got really into Webtoon and Lehzin both but could never get into Tapas.)
Webtoon.
I like both, but since I cant spend moneu ofter on *coins* I choose webtoon, since they are free and in tapas you need to pay at some point, but if you can spend money both!!
Just curious which people prefer. I greatly prefer Tapas because I find that the drawings are often better, and the chapters longer. I know it costs more, but I also know that they treat their writers way better.
This is mostly my POV as a creator rather than as a reader, but they're both terrible for equally similar and unique reasons. I'm no longer using either of them. At this point the question of "would you rather use Tapas or WT" is the same as the hypothetical, "would you rather take a bullet to the head or a bullet to the gut", they're both terrible and I'd rather just walk away from the question entirely. I do not benefit from using either of them as a creator and most of the comics I read and enjoy nowadays can be found on their own sites, in print, or on other platforms exclusive of WT / Tapas (ex. Tumblr, ComicFury, GlobalComix, etc.)
I personally think tapas a little is worse, at least webtoon always had a corporate angle from the start. Tapas built itself on indies, threw them away with kakao money they wasted and visibility for us on there is basically nonexistent now. i still get subs on webtoon every now and then. bar is in hell though lol
God, preach. But then again, WT also pulled similar shit like removing the Creator Rewards program. But yeah, Tapas is a real shame, I remember back in 2012-2014 when it had this super unique identity as the place to be for gag-a-day/slice of life/comedy comics and experimental indie stories, now it's just another dump for Korean imports and cheap Wattpad adaptions. I left in 2020 and never looked back. I do still sometimes miss what it used to be like, but it's never gonna go back to being like that, especially not while it's under the management of Kakao.
WEBTOON since it has much more free content but I read a lot on other sites if it is not free elsewhere. Still, I have unlocked episodes on Tapas for new or really good series. Used to watch ads, take quizzes and play games for ink in the past but I gave up because it was time consuming and I could find the same stuff freely.
Tapas nowadays. Less pop-ups, my subscriptions are easy to follow, I get free ink on Mondays, and my fellow readers are less annoying. None that "first" and "speed of gay" nonsense.
Tapas. I made the switch cause Kaleidoscope left webtoon for tapas, plus I can support the creator directly.. I just wished they had a deeper catalog in terms of thrillers and mystery
plus I can support the creator directly
I know that Tapas treats its creators better, but I've been wondering how the actual financial breakdown works.
Webtoon, but mainly for the nostalgia. There was a time in my life that I wasn’t doing so well and I knew what day it was based on which webtoon originals were released.
This was literally me a few years back, woke up early everyday just to read webtoon. Now I'm stuck stressed with busy days and have no time for it daily
You do realize tapas takes pretty much all their titles from seeing what’s popular on scanlation sites? It’s how they know what titles are popular. It helps the authors get their works translated. Again, I have supported many authors on Tapas too.
We always have at least since I have been using Tapas and have for some time. On Mondays in the app go to inbox>gifts>fortune cookie
You can get somewhere between 300 to 1,000 ink. I usually get 375 ink which is just enough to unlock one episode of Kaleidoscope. :)
I’ll pass on that lol I don’t watch the show I damn sure not about to read it
So, I've created the first chapter of my webtoon The Secret of Death. I curently uploaded to both Tapas and Webtoon Line. What do you guys think? WHich platform is better?
https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/the-secret-of-death/list?title_no=211944
I feel like tapastic is slowly dying, they had some issues a while ago with comic makers and some of them left the platform. I refused to change to line because I thought it was weird and not that intuitive to use but it seems that tapastic is fighting to be even more weird and the last update was a mess. I guess you could try both and maybe just stick to one when you get the differences more clear :)
I really think which one is "better" just depends on what audience you're going for and what you value. Webtoon readers tend to be a bit younger, but there's a lot more of them. Tapas has a better community and I've met way more people there.
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with posting on both, it's what I do as well!
Okay, I'll stivk to both and see for myself! Thank youu!
I read mostly on webtoon and tapas. What's gonna happen to all the series exclusively on tapas?
No. Tapas might not sit down due to this sale and I think the overreacting to it as if it'll shut down immediately is ridiculous.
There's a lot, in this article you linked, that's pretty well explained and once again Reddit users don't rest articles post the headline so in not even shocked anymore that people are freaking out.
Tapas is profitable and Kakao Entertainment is in control of a lot of companies that make it money (SM Entertainment for one). Kakao Entertainment is selling its major shares in that subsidiary because their previous economic plans (the IPO) fell through. They're trying to recoup what they initially thought they were going to gain off the back of that.
So no, I don't think Tapas is going to shut down after this sale. It's like the equivalent of Naver selling its major shares in Webtoon.
Well hopefully they will find a new home or you can continue to support creators via Patreon.
Why are you acting so obtuse? Obviously people are going to be distressed about losing hundreds of dollars of spent money if tapas closes. I’ve spent so much money unlocking novels and manhwa and I won’t own those anymore if they close down. I’m not going to re-spend that money on creator Patreons.
Yea, this is the biggest thing that dissuades me from spending money for digital comics.
Like, it would be one thing if they let you download everything you purchased offline since they're shutting down and you paid for it...but they will just pull the plug and tell you bye, and you'll lose everything you spent years collecting–which is why I understand why people "sail the high seas" (there's literally some comics that wouldn't exist anymore because of it).
I earned all my ink on Tapas with ads and the offerwall, and I'll definitely be torn if I lose everything.
Because it hasn't happened yet and it doesn't matter to me at all. 🤷🏿♀️
Well yeah, that's the right way I guess. I just don't like the prospect of losing all my reads and history overnight.
Nah don’t listen to her. She’s wrong and is being rude.
Well if it happens it happens. No use worrying about it when nothing has been decided.
Where are you getting that they might close down? If they sold to a buyer the buyer would want to keep revenue coming
EDIT: Also this article from Jan 24 suggests Tapas is very profitable for Kakao: https://newsroom.kakaoent.com/news/tapas-webtoon-platform-leads-kakao-entertainments-global-growth-with-industry-milestone-krw200-million-in-daily-revenue/
When companies are bought and sold they tend to sell a lot of things off, for example in 2018 a korean company called NHN Global bought the independent webcomic site Smackjeeves and by 2020 that site was completely closed down. If Kakao does find a buyer it's not impossible the same thing happens to Tapas if they don't find it profitable enough to maintain
Nice
Which of the two is better for hosting comics? And could you use both?
You can use both. Tapas is more creator friendly in that you get more options and customs for your comic, but webtoon as a whole has a much larger reader base so the potential to gain a large following is higher there. I personally prefer webtoon more for that reason, I have something like 30x more subs on webtoon than on tapas.
I might try em both out but it seems like webtoon is the better option. They've got sound and small animations now so maybe I could do somethin cool with that!
Sound and animation is only for featured/original creators. Not us plebs in the discover/canvas section. Tapas allows sound and gif tho.
What are your favorite comics on other platforms? Tapas, Manta, Namicomi, etc...
Tapas: I Married the Male Lead’s Dad
Marriage of Convenience
What It Means to Be You
Manta: Your Eternal Lies
I’ve Become A True Villainess
Idk what namicomi is 😅
also on tapas how to hide the emperors son is really good i first saw it on webtoon but u have to pay for anything after tne 3rd ep so i went to tapas and binged it all in one night 😭
That one’s on my TBR lol
I’m not sure on favourites but I sometimes go looking for other comics/story’s when I can’t find anything on webtoon I’m reading legend of Dangum rn
down for me as well, came here to check if anyone else is facing the same lol
yea me too im almost caught up on orv then it went down :(
someone pls tell me when its back :(
nvm guys its back now
ill check again but before when i tried to open it it said connect error?:(
Damn what are you reading
Tapas: Solo Leveling, Beginning After the End (maybe you already read it) Manta: none👎🏻 Namicomi: I didn’t even know this app exists until now 😅
Webtoon has just been going downhill lately and I was wondering apps I can use that are like Webtoon but not as money hungry, and without the annoying lack of creativity with content. Thank you!
For a creator first platform that's not money hungry there's Namicomi
For other platform most similar to webtoon theres Tapas, they are a mix of commercial and creator comics but have a system for earning free credits to read the premium comics
NamiComi did more in 3 years than Webtoon ever did, so I strongly suggest checking it out. Hanza and Merryweather already moved there too.
GlobalComix is a great one 😎👍
If anyone is sick and tired of webtoon's action, there are other comic platforms that need some lovin’.
•Namicomi
•Lemoon
•Globalcomix
•Comcraft
•Inkverse
I could say that tapas is not as good as webtoon, but you can check it out.
Thank you
thank you!
I’ve been thinking about signing up for various webtoon platforms (namely Tapas, Tappytoon, and Webtoon so far), but I also strongly prefer to read on my laptop instead of my phone and from what I’ve gathered from each’s FAQs they’re all more app-driven than web-driven. With that in mind, I’ve got a bunch of questions for people here that use any/all of those platforms. Feel free to answer one, some, or all of them, I don’t mind getting multiple people's input on these, and thank you in advance to anyone who responds!
General questions for any/all platforms:
Tapas-specific question:
Webtoon-specific questions:
Those are the three places that I use as well (both website and app except for Webtoons). Webtoons unless I'm just not a smartie I can't figure out how to (easily) read on both app and have it transfer to to the app and site so I just use the app.
I don't usually go out and seek the functions but I do know that Tapas is a LOT easier to get rid of stories on the app than the website (if you can?) Tapas (awhile ago) did have different sections on app vs site (including a section on the app that had a bunch of stories that have the ad to read extra.
Sorry, I don't have any knowledge on the special currencies, since I don't buy any. I do know that on Tapas you can get some every Monday for free using the app but accessible on both.
I don't usually pay attention to the ink/coin cost until I get to the end of a series where I have to finish the last little bit and that's only been needed for two so far!
Tapas:
I didn't have a referral code so IDK, sorry!
Webtoons:
I don't buy coins
I'm not sure how often (if ever) a series gets completely removed? I haven't seen any of my stories (I'm reading) have disappeared and I don't remember seeing "YZ has disappeared!" but I could be wrong.
Comparing the three:
Tapas:
You can read back and forth on both computer or app which is really good, you'll just need to make sure you went to the very end of the chapter (like to the comments on the app) for it to change to the next chapter next time.
Tappytoon:
Unless you're willing to buy their currency, be careful of which stories you start. A majority (that I was interested in) were ones that I needed to spend points on for every chapter and I wasn't willing to do that. I don't usually pay for my stories if I can help it (without going to the seas).
They do have a subscription for "X" points a month and quicker unlock time (but I don't use it).
You can read back and forth on both computer or app which is really good!
Webtoons:
You can BINGE! That's a big plus for a lot of people who can't stand waiting (for free)!
All:
They all have their own currency to buy chapters
Thank you so much for the answers! I totally understand needing to be careful about how much money you spend, too. Do you generally use the "wait till free" options on Tapas/Tappytoon to read whatever stories you're interested in on those platforms?
Hi! I can answer some questions about Webtoon, because that's the one I use. General Experience: Mostly positive. - There's a lot ot series on here that I like. - Binge reading a series and going from episode to episode feels very smooth.
The vertical scroll format is perfect for reading on my phone.
It bookmarks your spot so you can pick up right where you left off. Downsides - You can't search by topic, only by title or author. If you don't know exactly what something is titled, good luck. - Daily Pass series, which drive me crazy, though they've been getting better. You used to be able to unlock 1 epsiode for free per day, and the unlock expires after 2 weeks. Now many of these series have more unlocks/day, or you can unlock additional episodes by watching an ad. - Sometimes the ads are buggy and don't load. Web platform vs. App - You need the app if you want to read any daily pass series, or unlock any fast pass episodes. Monetization - Coins round to about 0.10$ USD. Example: 100 coins costs $9.99 + tax. Comes with 8 bonus coins. - Fast pass in ongoing series is usually 7 coins per episode.
Daily Pass (which are usually completed series, though not all completed series are daily pass) costs about 3 coins/episode. Or you can buy in bundles, like 25 coins to unlock 50 episodes. - Visa gift card probably? I haven't tried it.
Are series ever removed?
Is Webtoon free?
Thank you so much for the useful info, I appreciate it! To make sure I understand about the Daily Pass/completed series thing though, if I were to buy all episodes of a completed Daily Pass series, I'd still only be able to read them on the app and not the web, right? Which is such a bummer, 'cause there's a few ongoing series I'm currently following (without an account) that I'd consider buying whenever they're completed if that becomes the only way to binge reread them, but I prefer seeing the pretty art on my laptop's bigger screen.
Yeah, that's correct. Daily Pass series usually have the first 10 or so episodes available on the website, but then everything else is in the app.
Maybe if you're lucky, and if this is preferable to you over the app, you can go for getting paper copies of your favorite series instead. Not every series has this, but more and more webtoons have been getting released as actual books.
Why is the background combat from a video game?
Our comic is a prequel to the game we are making. This is some of our early gameplay for background footage.
That's cool. Good on you and your team!
Without context it feels very out of place.
Im currently debating what to do with my project, so this is a great post for me 8] thank ya.
No problem! Feel free to message me if you have any more questions
Oh, shit...you produced this.
Ummmmmm actually yeah I kinda may have to message you. Im just about ready to start pushing some things finally and you seem like a damn swell resource...
This video kicked ass, thanks so much.
this is exactly what i was looking for, great video, thank you so much.
Great video. Very helpful and well made. :)
Came across it today, it seems like a decent website, especially for manga and webnovels. I also noticed it has novels, very popular ones like SL and such.
Does anyone know more about it? Has anyone tried publishing anyone it and has information they would like to share?
So far I'm only using it to read manga and webnovels, but I'm wondering if it's a decent website to crosspost on.
Oh, me. Contracted author here.
In terms of money, it doesn't give that much, but the plus side is that the staff is very kind and helpful. They also edit the work and help you commission for the cover
Also, your book is not tied to them forever if you don't want it to. Unlike other places where the story is stuck there, regardless of whether it does well or not.
Anyway, it definitely gives a bit more flexibility in what you want to write, since many other serialised novel platforms seem to prefer certain genres and other genres would get buried.
Ultimately depends on what you're writing though. Each platform has their own pros and cons, and their own genres of preference.
That's actually good to hear. So it is cross post friendly? Since I post on RR first then everywhere else? And I get to keep the rights to my own work?
Since I already have a cover and edit my own work, will I need to let them edit it again or is that no necessary?
Yes. If you're contracted tho, only crosspost the free chaps.
Yes, you can also commission your own cover. SOme of my friends do this, since they have particular art style they want for their stories
Sure you gotta order more plates, but they all cost less so you're basically getting the same amount of food for the same amount of money
Ha ha
I'm here just ordering three plates of the padron peppers.
I meant the website but I will jot down this advice too.
I think you have to go Exclusive for that.
They have community side (non contracted) but the exposure is less
I used to read there, but I don't anymore. The microtransactions got to me and I didn't find it worth the hassle.
