Korean Emoji Usage
Korean emojis, like emojis in other cultures, can have multiple meanings depending on the context. For example, some users interpret certain emojis as expressing "meltingly happy" or relaxation [1:2], while others might use them to convey exhaustion
[1:6]. The interpretation often depends on the situation and the accompanying text.
Cultural Context of Emojis
The concept of emojis originated in Japan, with the term "emoji" meaning "picture character" (絵文字) [2:2]. While this style of emoji was popularized in Japan, similar forms of expression, such as emoticons, have been developed independently across various cultures. In Korea, emojis are often used alongside kaomoji, which are emoticons that represent facial expressions using characters from the Korean alphabet or other symbols.
Emojis in K-Pop Culture
In the K-pop community, fans often use specific emojis to represent idols as a form of endearment. These associations can become part of an idol's branding. For instance, Jungkook is often represented by a bunny emoji, Hwasa by a lion, and Kai by a bear [3:3]
[3:5]. Idols are generally aware of these associations, and some even participate in choosing their emojis, as seen with groups like Enhypen and NCT
[3:7].
Idol-Inspired Emojis
Some idols have unique stories behind their emoji representations. For example, Taemin from SHINee is associated with the cheese emoji due to a nickname given by a fellow band member [3:1]. Similarly, Hoshi from Seventeen is known for his dedication to the tiger emoji, which he uses frequently
[3:8].
Choosing Emojis for Representation
Fans and idols alike play a role in determining which emojis best represent them. This choice can be influenced by personality traits, physical characteristics, or inside jokes within the fandom. For example, members of a group may be associated with animals that reflect their personalities, such as a dog for Martin or an eagle for James [4:1].
Understanding the cultural significance and context of emojis can enhance communication and connection within the Korean community and beyond.

Melting and relaxation, I take it as positive.
Could be used to express exhaustion or relaxation, or to describe something meltingly (it is a real word look it up). It really depends on the context tbh
exhausted?
My wife is korean and I still don’t know the meaning of it or why she uses it
Uj/ why does japenis have so many emojis lmao down to their island? No other nation is like this
Like others say they invented emoji and had been using them for many years before they became widespread elsewhere.
Emoji is literally a Japanese word that means picture character: 絵文字. The fact that it happens to sound similar to the English word emotion or the older computer term emoticon is a coincidence.
Stuff like :) or ^_^ in Japanese is called kaomoji or "face character": 顔文字
They invented emoji
They may have invented a specific style of emoji but my understanding is emoji/emoticons were also developed in the West (and really in every other culture since the dawn of time of we want to go down that route).
So again I ask why does japaneis have so many emojis lol.
Koreans: 🤮 Japanese Koreans: 😍
Actually Japanese Koreans are also 🤮 according to history.
funny as hell to think that the west glazes japan while southeast and south asian countries are glazing korea because of kpop
Kpop fans like to use emojis to represent idols as and use them as a term of endearment. Like most of us use the bunny emoji to represent Jungkook, the lion emoji to represent Hwasa, the angel emoji to represent Jeonghan or the bear emoji to represent Kai. Are there any idols who knows about this and has talked about fans using emojis to describe them.
i dont know shinee very well but im pretty sure taemin's emoji is cheese and i think he's very aware of it judging from his vlive titles and ig captions.
kai meanwhile identifies himself as a bear really strongly and collects a lot of items with bears in it.
i think baekhyun is aware he has the cute looks that reminds people of dogs. even their manager knows the animals/emojis the exo members represent.
Yes Taemin's emoji is cheese which started about 4 years ago cause minho nicknamed him baby cheese lol, Onews / Jinkis is a bunny . I don't really know keys and minhos but assuming it's these ️
AFAIK, they all used to have an animal associated with them: Onew was a bunny, Jonghyun was a dog, Key was a cat or fox, Minho was a deer, and Taemin was a baby bird, as well as "official" emojis: ^▽^, ㅎㅅㅎ, `ㅂ´, ㅍ_ㅍ, and ^^;;/6v6. Taemin still uses 6v6 a lot for himself. (This is how I know I'm a hagwol lol).
It's definitely changed in the past few years though, and what you put in your comment is correct. It's what I see fans use the most, especially when translating bubbles.
I think most of them knew, especially the newer generations. Enhypen even decide their own emojis lol.
definitely, its part of their branding. armys recently discussed switching taehyungs emoji from tiger to bear and asked him for his opinion about it on weverse - it seems he prefers tiger lol
Yeah they are. At least for a fact that I know all Nct knows their emojis. Nct 127 even talked about those in one of their interviews and they use it as well. Nct twitter also uploads pictures and uses emojis to represent the members.
Cue Jaehyun and emoji discussion
NCT even teaching their newest members shotaro and sungchan to choose emojis as a part of rookie things to learn uwu & pair
Oh, I didn't know that otter emojis existed!!
Hoshi knows for sure. Considering he’s the one that uses it the most and risked getiing demoted in fancafe cause of his sheer dedication to the tiger emoji.
I think that Hoshi may have the most aggressive emoji change ever. At the same time, nobody really mentions him as a hamster only either.
At least he knows suho resembles a bunny lol
Or do they already have emojis?
This are the ones I got from the profiles someone postes a few weeks ago
Martin: 🐕 (Dog – Italian Greyhound) James: 🦅 (Eagle) Juhoon: 🐢 (Turtle) Seonghyeon: 🦊 (Fox) Keonho: 🐶 (Puppy)
