TL;DR Prepaid is generally cheaper and offers flexibility without long-term commitments, while postpaid may provide better coverage and perks but at a higher cost.
Cost Comparison
Verizon prepaid plans are typically more affordable than postpaid options. Prepaid plans include surcharges except for E911, and offer discounts through autopay and loyalty programs [2:1]. For example, Verizon's unlimited prepaid plans range from $50 to $60 per line, whereas postpaid plans can cost $60-$80 per line plus additional fees
[1:3]. Visible, a Verizon MVNO, offers even lower prices with similar network benefits
[2:6].
Service Coverage and Prioritization
Postpaid plans often have better service coverage and prioritization, especially in areas with congestion. Prepaid users experience deprioritization, meaning their data speeds may be slower during peak times [5:4]. Additionally, postpaid plans may offer domestic roaming that is not available on prepaid plans
[2:2]. However, some prepaid plans like the Unlimited Plus offer the same prioritization as postpaid plans
[2:1].
Flexibility and Commitment
Prepaid plans offer greater flexibility with no long-term contracts, allowing users to leave anytime [2:1]. This is beneficial for those who do not want to finance phones or upgrade frequently
[1]. On the other hand, postpaid plans might lock you into a contract if you finance devices
[1:2].
Additional Features and Customer Service
Postpaid plans may come with additional perks like device financing, insurance, and premium data features [2:7]. They also tend to have better customer service options, including phone support
[5:5]. Prepaid plans often rely on web chat for customer service
[3:1], which may be less convenient for some users.
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When deciding between prepaid and postpaid, consider your data usage, budget, and need for additional features like hotspot capabilities, which vary between plans [5:7]. Evaluate whether the potential savings of prepaid outweigh the benefits of postpaid services, such as better coverage and customer support.
Trying to figure out what makes the most sense. I’m currently on prepaid 15 gb and really don’t use that much data at all. My wife is on a separate plan and we were thinking about having her come onto my plan. If she joins my plan does that mean we’re better off with going postpaid since I’m adding an additional line or overall it’ll still be cheaper on prepaid? None of us are financing phones and we don’t plan on upgrading phones often. She definitely wants to go with unlimited data I know that much.
I think you guys should just go get Visible get the Visible plus plan $45 a line taxes and fees included. You’ll be out the door for under $100. Postpaid has those extra taxes and fees and you do you buy devices you’re going to be locked in for three years And they’re only giving the good deals to people who have the premium unlimited plans the other option you have is buy your phones out right and use either what you’re using or use US Mobile which has some good options as well and since you’re like data users, she probably could put you guys Into one of the smaller plans or use a pool plan which gives you unlimited talk and text and you can customize it as to how much data you want to have All 5G devices have priority data
Verizon's unlimited prepaid plans are $50 or $60 per line (the latter includes 50GB of "Premium" data, meaning less affected during times of congestion than your current 15GB plan). So with your 15GB prepaid ($35/mo) that adds up to $85 to $95, plus fees.
Verizon's postpaid plans all have unlimited data. For two lines you'll end up paying $60-$80 plus fees per line, depending on how much "Premium" data you want on each (and some other frills). So definitely a bit more expensive.
In your shoes I'd consider a couple of Verizon MVNOs as well.
US Mobile offers 100GB of Premium data on their Unlimited Premium plan. Two people on this plan costs $40 each, or you can have one person on this plan ($45) plus another cheaper plan, e.g. 18GB for $25. Fees are extra, but less than Verizon's. USM also has excellent customer service, available 24/7. The only issue is that once you run over 100GB per month, additional data is throttled at 256 kbps (so not usable for video/streaming, and hardly even for casual web browsing).
Visible (technically not an MVNO, but a subsidiary of Verizon) has two plans, at $30 and $45 respectively, both with unlimited data. On the latter, the first 50GB is "Premium" data. Visible's CS is less excellent, more like Verizon's.
Finally, if you need any of the following you may need to stick with Verizon (though of course these cost extra)
In addition to this, you can get a $10/line discount if you enroll in Autopay and paperless billing.
Thanks a lot for all the info and detailed response, definitely helpful.
The way i see it is, postpaid if you want domestic roaming and travel to boonies.
If else, prepaid is still cheaper; especially with MVNO.
Thanks for the response!
Is prepaid service better than the postpaid service?
No partner roaming outside of the native Verizon network or LTEiRA partners on PrePaid. Otherwise there isn't much difference. You can see the coverage difference on this map
It’s the same. Except for the perks. You might, might get a bit slower internet but, that’s about it. Oh. Insurance, maybe different type of customer service but, it’s the same great service.
You can’t finance a phone, can’t insure a phone, can’t add perks, you have the lowest prioritization on the tower, you don’t get 5UW, and if you ever need customer service then best of luck.
Only the cheaper plans have lower QCI levels. More expensive ones are QCI 8 like other Verizon prepaid brands
The highest prepaid plan gets 5guw and the same prioritization as the postpaid plans but the rest of them yes that is correct
Yes. That too.
Check out visible. I had verizon before and it was like 160 for two phones. Now with pretty much same service on the verizon network I and my wife pay 30 for each of our phones
It's not pretty much the same service though
That's like saying switching to a ramen noodle diet is pretty much the same food lol
It’s owned & operated by Verizon though.
Depending on which plan you get, you can get unlimited priority data at a fraction of the price of Verizon Postpaid & even Prepaid as well for the exact same network. Arguably with better features than Verizon Prepaid.
That would depend on how you define better.

Postpaid cons:
What are the downsides to having Verizon Prepaid service? I am planning on getting the $60 UW plan. Is this just as good as postpaid?
Yes, minus you dont get “free 15s”
& Unlimited priority data. Especially for 4G LTE/5G DSS
I doubt there is any actual difference if you are in UW zone
And, somehow, customer service is worse.
If you're going with prepaid I would take a look at Visible+ for $45/month. The main downside is that CS is 100% web chat, no phone number.
Verizon: iPhone 16 Pro Max ($180) + $2520 Unlimited Plus ($70 x 36 months) - $300 GC = $2400
Visible: iPhone 16 Pro Max ($1200) + $1440 plan ($40 x 36 months) = $2640
Is this correct or do I suck at math?
In my eyes I’m saving money just being with Verizon. Before I added my bf to my plan I was paying around $109 (inc military disc) 15 plus, unlimited plus, apple one Hulu Netflix ad on. Visible would’ve been around $125-130 a month (inc subscriptions I would’ve alr been paying for). Ntm the promos for trade ins are now included for existing customers so we’re saving even more now whenever I plan on upgrading both phones later this year. Also plan on switching to fios whenever frontier merger is done so I’d be saving even more
This is what gets missed a lot as I was thinking the same thing. I get loyalty discount, 50% off 3 connected devices, Verizon Visa, saving $$$ on Xbox game pass ultimate and Disney bundle. And not to mention the trade in promos we usually take advantage of.
Same. We get military and loyalty discounts making it way cheaper. I’m saving about $45 with the subscription ad ons
I can tell you that taxes and fees really add up on postpaid. My Unlimited Ultimate line has $12 in taxes and fees. They didn’t charge me anything up front so a good chunk of that is sales tax installments for my 512GB 16 Pro Max but there are $6 in surcharges alone.
You have to add taxes and fees on Verizon and $35 activation / upgrade fee.
This, plus you need to be upgrading your phone every 3 years to take advantage of whatever the promo is at that time. If you ride the same phone at that point it’s cheaper to just be on a prepaid plan.
Cheaper sure . But I get enough out of Ultimate plan I rather pay for the cost. I'm paying $65 before taxes, fees and watch line. $78 with that included. After 6 years when the BYOD promo runs up maybe I'll just get a phone for "free" where the credits pay off the phone financed.
In my case it would cost more as I also use the credit add on with Verizon for Disney+ bundle, Netflix, Apple one family, and paramount. Not to mention I’m currently getting loyalty discounts too so yeah
Same here!! lol I’ve found it would either cost the same to move or more.
Fuck na
What is the real difference between the two. Is there really better service connection wise with postpaid? But I'm not asking just about this example, but every positive/negative aspect you can think of.
I really don't get the draw for post paid. Prepaid seems so much better if you don't need unlimited and if your okay with not always having the fastest (read prioritized) speeds. And honestly, my wife and I get 15GB each, with hotspot and HD voice, two features I've enjoyed. Going on road trips with the family, we never run out of data. And I'm paying $75.50....after taxes/fees/all in. For 2 lines. Why would I pay $130-$140 for postpaid? So my mobile website and load .2 seconds faster? Again, to each their own, but is it worth $700/year better?
I just made the switch and no regrets. I haven’t had any noticeable issues with service. Also you can buy discounted refill cards on EBay to lower your out of pocket cost further. Just bought some $50 refills for $32 each.
The full time depriority could be an issue if congestion is a serious issue in your market. I have been using my phone exactly how I used it on postpaid, and have not observed any noticeable change. YMMV.
$32??? Sheesh. I haven't seen any at that price. I made the switch a few days ago since it was $45 for 16gb for life.
Tried using my data earlier today and speeds were terrible. Hopefully it's just that one location.
Search eBay seller donforliowireless. He has some up right now. He seems to post some for sale every couple of days. They sell out quickly.
Those are the ones I can think of, in addition to the others mentioned.
No, I am on prepaid now and on postpaid for years. I can tell you Zero difference. But half the price and double data. How crazy it is. I don't care about customer service. Did you need to call them all the time?
I have had to chat and call them a few times. I must say I was always very impressed. The wait times are very small and they take care of you really well.
One the first day of service I ran into some really tough data issues. The lady spent 2 hours with me to resolve it. She even called me back the next day to check on things. I would say the customer support was as good as any. And I was coming from T-Mobile postpaid where I was used to calling a number and getting connected to a human immediately.
No, I've had the normal amount of issues over the years. Now I won't lie. There has been times when CS has been annoying and frustrating, but I've found that remembering what they must go through on an hourly basis helps me to just be more calm and patient.
I live in Atlanta, and I have had prepaid for 3+ years, and never had the first problem (that I know of). I have been downtown on the busiest of work days, and never had the first problem.
And yes, most LTE roaming IS included. Good luck!
You can use hotspot on other prepaid plans, just not the unlimited plan.
Hotspot is allowed on the tiered plans. They are doing a double data promo right now. 16gb for $45 if that’s enough data for you.
Just search Verizon Refill on eBay. $40 and $50 cards on there. You can find them for about 10-15 below face value.
at what point would postpaid be a better value then prepaid?
Depends on the plan and your needs. Prepaid is probably fine for half the population, service wise. Usually the price point is better, but consider: you can't finance phones with Verizon on prepaid (including promotions), no insurance through them either, and many other features are unavailable (such as certain international options).
living where a wired internet connection isnt possible hotspot is needed. i was just curious if having 3 prepaid lines would still be cheaper then 3 postpaid lines. i have the visible plus pro plan right now on my phone
Visible will probably be better value since I believe it is not throttled ever. Just speed capped.
Prepaid doesn't include hotspot unless you choose the Plus plan ($70 or $60 with autopay). And it's only 10GB then hard throttle.
New customers on postpaid could do 3 lines on Ultimate for $65 each with autopay normally, and $20 off the top right now. So $175+tax and possible $130 if you bring your own phone for all 3. That would get you 200GB each high speed and even after it throttles it's useable. And you can extend it further if necessary. If you're in 5G UWB range this could be a significant performance boost.
Customer service is poop. Either in store or on the phone.
I've heard that there is a difference in regard to the prioritization. postpaid has higher prioritization that pre-paid.
i have visible witch is owned by verizon. so idk if that point still holds
At a store level i have extra discounts i can apply to up to 2 lines. I see hot spot is a non negotiable - is that needed for all 3?
If so right now it's 65/line with auto pay x 3 lines then you get a $15 BYOD credit per line making the total before tax 130 and that doesnt include any store level discounts we can offer. This is on postpaid for your situation I wouldn't bother with the prepaid
If you have more questions feel free to dm me
Only with discounts
what kind of discounts lol

I suppose a lot of people finance devices. So, postpaid it great in that aspect.
Hey!
I’m on prepaid - there is no difference plan wise vs postpaid.
Roaming works great! (Recently used international on both of my lines).
There’s all the same features (wifi calling, etc).
Totally agree that prepaid is a nice way to avoid a potential surprise roaming bill, etc. If there’s no funds in the account, it will just stop working.
Another bonus is a lower “activation fee”. When I signed up, I paid $10 for the SIM card then the months service.
As someone who always buys my phones outright, postpaid didn’t make sense for me.
One question. Are you paying for this with a credit card?
yup. is there another way to?
Needs for data is going to be a huge part of this, but if the data available with the prepaid annuals is adequate for your personal needs I would highly recommend them over the postpaid.
Why. Whats the difference in the data between the monthly prepaid and postpaid?
The prepaid annuals provide an allotment of data that's good for the year. It doesn't renew monthly, or offer data with slower speeds once used up, it's a hard cut.
The best currently available is $159 / 40gb / year. Basically works out to $13.25 3.33gb monthly.
If you don't have large data needs the price can't be beat.
Freedom is the only Canadian carrier that has identical features and plans on prepaid and postpaid. I would recommend prepaid as you avoid all unexpected fees, as you need to add credit to your account for pay per use services to work. For example, if you accidentally make an international call, it will simply not go through instead of charging you.
It's more expensive, but is there that more coverage and speed to warrant the price?
There's perks on Postpaid to consider as well. The streaming can help offset costs if they're services you use.
Postpaid really becomes a better deal if you have multiple lines or connected devices like tablets/watches.
It really depends. Yes, it is possible to have better speeds and coverage. If you're at a place that requires domestic roaming, postpaid has it, prepaid's roaming is very limited if available at all. If you are at a very congested area, postpaid gives you more priority data, which means the speed is better (or rather, decreases the least). In my experience, postpaid also gets better customer service but it's YMMV.
So, it hugely depends on your use case and location. I used to have prepaid and never had an issue. I now have a bigger family plan and since postpaid is about the same price, I switched to postpaid. There are horror stories about how bad Verizon's deprioritization could be and I don't doubt them.
So, if you are experiencing deprioritization or are going to places where you need roaming but you don't get it, then you should consider postpaid. But otherwise, if you're happy with prepaid's speed and coverage and it's cheaper, no reason really to switch.
You get the same roaming on prepaid as you do with postpaid
Not true. My postpaid roams on us cellular in Maine. My sons prepaid does not.
That depends on where you are. Some places you probably won't see the difference. Other places where there are more people it may be a lot slower on prepaid at times.
priority, depriority, it's all a meme when the network is congested.
Don't expect any support at all on prepaid, though.
Based on my experience, having a postpaid and a prepaid at the same time for a couple of week. I can say that all depends.
Example: I did a speed test first on prepaid and after that on the postpaid, the speed are very similar. Download speed around 150mbps.
If you do the same test but both phones doing the speed test at the same time, you can notice a big difference between the postpaid (not starter plan) and the prepaid. In my case with postpaid I was able to get 110mbps and in the prepaid it was around 20mbps. This is how works DE prioritization.
In a normal day, do you even notice the difference in less congested areas. In a high congested area on my postpaid I was able to get 1.5-2.0mbps and in my prepaid the speed test wasn't able to run and in the best case scenario was around 0.5mbps.
Phone calls: The calls quality was very similar, but on most of the cases the postpaid was faster to connect the call.
Text messages: who use that? sorry I didn't use them only for codes from banks, so no experience on that.
Coverage: It is exactly the same in both in verizon network, but in postpaid you have domestic and international roaming.
Conclusion: Unless your life/work depends in your cellphone coverage and good internet all the time, you will be good with any of the 2. So this might not be good for real state agents, sellers, etc.
huh? everyone uses text messages lol
Im currently paying $66 a month for my phone. My current plan gives me 5gb a month. I use around 3gb a month. And I never upgrade or bother financing new phones (I always buy them full price outright). But I am seeing that a prepaid plan with 15gb a month comes to only $35. How is this possible? I have been trying to see what the differences between my current plan and the prepaid is. But I dont see what it could be
Stetson Doggett has a YouTube channel where he reviews phone plan. A Google search of Verizon post-paid vs Pre-Paid service help you understand the differences.
Your eyes do not deceive you. It's been better on prepaid for a long time.
The difference here is that those 5GB you get now on postpaid have network priority. No plan except the highest one on prepaid has priority. So expect your data to be slower during times of congestion.
Verizon data is slow for many and congestion is just an excuse. I had a more expensive postpaid plan with Verizon and Mint gave me 150mbps average in areas Verizon gave 2- 3.
I've heard you say this before but I think you just have a chip on your shoulder. Congestion has been an issue with all ISPs since like 2010 in my own experience. "Peak times" is the verbiage they used then but I remember even coax connections getting bogged down without any other reason.
You call it an excuse, but is it if it's true? It's a reason, sure, but it's not like it's made up. It's a physical limitation in the infrastructure. You realize Mint has far fewer users than Verizon? That alone can explain it. I don't think it's the only reason, but everyone knows LTE is capable of more than 2-3mbs and has been since 2012.
Prepaid, you get some discounts with either Auto Pay or "Loyalty". Loyalty is where you have the plan for more than 9 months.
This was when I first started with Pre Paid... first 3 months, you get $5 off. The 2nd 3 months is your 6 month point. Another $5 off. Then at 9 you get another $5. Total of $15 off your plan. But... it doesn't get combined with Auto Pay.
But now it's after 3mon, $5 off. Then after 9mon, another $5. Total of $10 off.
Auto Pay discount is $10 off for plans over $45. It does say "Additional loyalty discounts do not apply".
So for the $45 plan with 15GB, I'm paying $35 because the Auto Pay superseded the Loyalty (not including tax). With tax, it's closer to $38.
If I turn off Auto Pay, maybe the Loyalty will kick in after the cycle starts again? I haven't done it to confirm. But with the revised Loyalty, it's the same amount of discount.
I wanted to share my experience with the 15GB Plan you saw, since I've had it for a bit now. I used to be on their old 5GB Plan for $35, paying $27 with the Auto Pay discount and tax. But they've discontinued that.
2 complaints: 1) No text message for your data usage. It's app only. 2) Customer service sucks for Pre Paid. Both online and calls. So... shop around.
short answer, switch to that prepaid plan.
there is NO reason you should stay on the plan you're currently on. it's much too old, and verizon doesn't offer any promos for those older plans.
the main reasons to stay on a postpaid plan is if you plan to finance a phone with a high trade in promo (which you're not), or if you're on a family plan (+5 members can bring an unlimited line down to $27 per line per month)
I dunno. If he can use data at all he is better off than I am.
I'm on an MVNO plan for 3gb a month. Lately, I rarely use over one and it's not for lack of trying. In my area, deprioritizing makes data almost impossible to use. Voice and text is just okay, but was a lot better before the plug got pulled on CDMA. LTE is just overwhelmed.
i live in a fairly big area. lots of big cities by me. and 90% of all my data usage is on wifi as opposed to network
Thank you. I appreciate this
Yeah, that's a waste. I pay $180 for a year of service that includes the same 5GB with Mint. This works out to $15 per month. If you want unlimited, it's the equivalent to $30 per month.
All major carriers rip you off for a single line.
Hi there,
I’m looking to try and understand if there’s a good deal that would provide a cheaper rate ir similar rate with unlimited data compared to the plan I have now.
Currently there’s 4 lines, 2 with unlimited, 1 with 15gb and 1 with 3gb. Due to a promo deal gotten long ago, as well as loyalty and auto pay discounts, the current price for all those is $125 with taxes and fees included.
Does moving from prepaid to post pay count as a new customer and eligible for new phone promos?
Is there anything comparable to what I have, and what’s offered now in the postpaid space?
Thank you for the help.
Moving to postpaid does qualify you for new customer promotions:
Thank you so much. Good to know it does count as a new customer switching over and price is comparable. I’m in no rush to switch, so I think waiting until Black Friday would get the best bang for my buck. Thank you everyone who took the time!
Yes you would count as a new customer. 4 lines after tax on welcome is roughly $140. I would wait for Black Friday or cyber Monday at this point
I would avoid the Welcome plans at all costs. You have zero priority data. So if a tower is full, guess who is the last one to gain acces?
If you were to switch to postpaid; ● 4 lines on unlimited welcome would be $120+tax w/Autopay disc. You'll get unlimited data, calls, text + service in Mexico and Canada. There's also perks of other service such as Netflix & Max or Disney Bundle for $10 each if you're into that. ● You'd qualify for any entry level promo as if you were a new customer so you're good + if you get a good dude from sales they can help you out with slapping a local/national discount which is like $10 tho I can't remember how long it lasts for. ● Your discounts from prepaid would not carry over to postpaid. It'll treat as if you're cancelling service with prepaid.
