TL;DR Secret notes are collectible items that provide hints and insights into the game. They can be found after completing the "Winter Mystery" quest, which is triggered by an event in Winter of Year 1.
Unlocking Secret Notes
To start finding secret notes, you must first complete the "Winter Mystery" quest. This quest begins when you encounter a shadow figure at the bus stop during one of the first few days of Winter in Year 1 [4:1]. You need to walk (not ride horseback) from your farm to the bus stop between 6 am and 4 pm to trigger the cutscene
[3:3]. After the cutscene, follow the footprints left by the shadow figure to a bush near the community center and interact with it to obtain a magnifying glass
[2:1].
Finding Secret Notes
Once you have the magnifying glass, secret notes can be found while performing various activities such as mining, hoeing, chopping trees, fishing, and checking trash cans [5:2],
[3:2]. To read a secret note, select it in your inventory and click on your character, similar to consuming an item
[2:1].
Purpose of Secret Notes
Secret notes often contain lists of liked or loved gifts for NPCs, providing players with valuable information for building friendships [1:1],
[1:2]. Some notes may also lead to special events or rewards, such as "fetch" quests
[1:2]. While there isn't a direct reward for gifting all items listed in a note, they serve as helpful guides for gift-giving
[1:3].
Troubleshooting
If you haven't encountered secret notes despite being several years into the game, it's likely that you haven't triggered the initial cutscene for the "Winter Mystery" quest [5:1]. Ensure you walk to the bus stop during the specified time in Winter to begin the quest. If you've already triggered the quest but missed the footprints, you can still interact with the bushes in the area above the shop and clinic to progress
[5:5].
When i get secret notes like this am i supposed to be able to help get her those items? Like gifting them to her? I haven't attempted bc i dont want bad friendship points
No,lists like this one( or when other npcs make shopping lists for their friends/family) are their liked/loved gifts. Pretty much npcs giving you ideas what to gift to others.
Some are "fetch" notes >!like one with necklace in front of bath house!<
I wish there was a secret Easter egg type thing where if you gifted her everything on this list, she'd give you a new gadget for your farm or something
Like "thanks for all your hard work farmer! I made this new farm device that stimulates fruit tree growth" or sumn lol
I was so hoping for this but i dont mind the hints on the npc likes
She actually loves those gifts I think demetrius also has strawberries as a loved gift.
I bet if you tried you'd find her eternally grateful for the gift.
Gotta love that the list of loved gifts on the NPC's menu page updates with the information found in secret notes. It's a great way to access the information again later, if you need it.
Title says it all :)
it's a secret....
You can find them starting in Winter of year 1 after you get an event where a shadow person runs away from you at the bus stop. Follow the shadow person and find the footsteps they left in the snow that lead to a bush near the community center, then click the bush. You will find a magnifying glass.
From then on, you will be able to find secret notes while doing all sorts of activities: mining, hoeing, chopping trees, fishing... to read a secret note, select it and click on your character, as if you were eating an item.
Thanks so much!! This helped. Have a good day kind stranger.
I’m at the beginning of Winter, Year 1. Technically my second play through but I only barely got into year 2 last time. All year so far I’ve been keeping an eye out for worms, checking trash cans, fighting in the mines (currently at level 90). I’ve found a ton of missing books but not a single secret note. What am I missing? Or do I just have the worst luck in this playthrough?
Did you get the cutscene with the shadow person then follow their step and get the magnifying glass? Also I've found breaking rocks and fiber to give them more commonly. So maybe try farming fiber levels like 25 or 81
I completely forgot about that scene, I haven’t gotten it yet. What triggers it? Or is it random?
It's trigger by leaving you farm via the bus stop between 6am to 4pm
how do i unlock the cutscene for the secret notes?
Happens in winter. Although PS4 and Xbox currently don’t have them if that’s what you play on
One of the first handful of days of Winter, you walk from your farm to the bus stop and it triggers. I think it's the 4th? Also note that you have to WALK, it will not trigger if you're on horseback. I figured that out the hard way.
thank you!
I got my friend on the stardew train, and he just told me he gets secret notes, in the mines, from the worms, trees etc. He just started year two.
But I’m in year 4, have soooo much complete but I don’t think I’ve ever seen these secret notes???
You got a cutscene the first time you walked towards town in Winter year 1 where a little shadow fella ran off leaving footprints behind him.
They'll still be there for you to follow next winter.
Where are the footprints? Im in winter now but can’t seem to find anything to do with the quest??
They are in the area by the fountain above the shop and clinic.
Should lead to one of the bushes. If you can't see them for whatever reason just interact with all the bushes in that area
It doesn’t have to be winter if you triggered the quest. I did it the following summer because I forgot about it.
That means you have not completed the Winter Mystery quest
So, I’m on year 3 summer right now. Whenever the Krobus running away cutscene happened during year 1 winter, I didn’t know I was supposed to follow him so I was just like “huh, weird” and continued on with my day. The winter mystery quest appeared in my journal but I wasn’t really sure how to solve it or whatever (and I didn’t look it up cause I’m an idiot).
My second interaction with Krobus was when I got the rusty key from Gunther and immediately went to the sewers to interact with him. I thought that the winter mystery journal entry would be solved or whatever since I’d found Krobus, but it didn’t. I ended up just deleting the quest from my journal a while later because I thought it was a glitch that it wasn’t resolved. Now my friends who also play stardew are telling me that I’ve actually screwed myself over because I cancelled the quest that would give me the secret notes and I have no way of getting them.
Do I really need the secret notes? Is there a way I can continue without them and still finish their mini quests just using the wiki info? If y’all have any clue please let me know :)
Next winter, try going to the bush where he is hiding and interact with it. Maybe he’s still there even though you deleted it.
You can’t get the stuff from the notes without the notes.
UPDATE: thanks for your help everyone! I just clicked on the bush Krobus was hiding in and the whole problem is fixed!
Is the secret notes creature canonically krobus?
yes
You really cant do any secret stuff without finding those secret notes first. Wait until winter again and hope for the cutscene to appear.
You need the secret notes.
Not sure it actually has to be winter, though. Try interacting with the bush in whatever season it is now.
It does have to be winter unfortunately

Solution to your dilemma
I've been saving them but do I really need them?
You need to read them, and then they'll disappear from your inventory. You need one of them to unlock an event in the secret woods
Aaahh okay. I'm on Android, don't suppose you know how to read them?
Same way you eat food. Hold and tap
I'm on switch, so I don't know Android controls at all. Sorry! I imagine it's the same way that you would use any other item in the game.
Does anyone else has the feeling that the notes in dredge are not mainly for narrative purposes, especially with the fact they are separated from the messages in another tab, but rather that they are a sort of puzzle that leads to something for the player to get or see? If so, has anyone ever tried to solve/was able to solve them?
I believe the ragged note was >!written by the old mayor of little marrow!< but thats just about all ive got
yeah, maybe it was but what i really want to know is if theres a puzzle to solve within these notes
i don't think so, it's mainly supposed to give you some lore and it allows you to make theories about the character's past
also i think the character has schizophrenia
Unfortunately there's no gold at the end of the rainbow :( the notes layout the events before the story takes place.
i feel like some of the notes have been written by ourself,, it mentions the loss of a woman, and the player has supposedly lost their wife 🤷🏻♂️
Hmm, I thought about this, and I do think that there might be some hidden lore, we should try to get game theory to make a video about dredge (unless I'm just being stupid and there is already one)
I need to go back to my file and check these off
On my original farm, I never met Krobus during the first winter and unlocked the secret notes. I’m now in year 6…. Did I miss out on them forever for this save file?
You should still be able to get the magnifying glass by interacting with the bush by the community center (not sure if you need to do it during winter season or not though). In winter you would see footsteps leading to the bush.
Did you already shake the bush by the playground and see if he's there?
Thank y’all so much!!! I’ve been trying to figure this out for the longest time 😭
No, you can still trigger the cutscene with the shadow person at any time if I remember correctly although I think the ability to figure out how to trigger it if you don't already know only shows up in the winter season.
