Overall Reception
"The Sinner" has received a mix of positive and critical feedback from viewers. Many people praised the movie for its unique blend of horror, drama, and musical elements, with standout performances, particularly by Michael B. Jordan [1:1]
[2:1]. The film was described as a breath of fresh air in the entertainment industry, offering a compelling script and strong acting
[2]. However, some viewers felt that the vampire aspect detracted from the film's initial setup, which was more historical drama/action/musical
[1:2].
Plot and Genre Elements
The movie incorporates traditional vampire tropes but attempts to blend them with deeper drama elements [2:3]. While some viewers appreciated this approach, others found it lacking, especially in terms of character depth and plot resolution
[2:7]
[2:10]. The film's middle third is noted for having ambitious sequences, although it sometimes falls into tropey action
[5].
Villain and Themes
Rennic, the villain, is highlighted as a memorable character due to his psychological assault on the protagonists and his complex motivations [4]. His Irish background and connection to themes of oppression add layers to his character, making him more than just a typical antagonist
[4:7]
[4:8]. Some viewers appreciated how the film addressed issues of cultural erasure and identity through its characters and storyline
[4:9].
Criticism and Areas for Improvement
Despite the praise, there are criticisms regarding the movie's pacing and dialogue. Some viewers found parts of the film boring or felt that certain plot points were not fully developed [5:3]. Additionally, the film's climax and resolution were seen as disappointing by some, who expected a more satisfying conclusion
[1:5]
[2:6].
Conclusion
While "The Sinner" may not be universally acclaimed, it has been recognized for its creativity and ambition. It offers a fresh take on the vampire genre, blending horror with music and drama, and features strong performances that make it worth watching for fans of these genres. However, viewers should be prepared for some uneven pacing and storytelling choices that may not fully meet their expectations.
There’s so much stuff online about this movie being great, I can safely say it 100% lives up to the hype. The acting, sets, and especially the music are amazing. Just you’re run of the vampire movie it is not. It definitely earns the 97 critic and audience rotten tomatoes rating and I would recommend it to anyone in DGG who likes horror, blues music, or good movies.
I’d give it a 7 or 8 out of ten tbh.
I feel like the final act lets the movie down. It does a great job setting up the conflict, but doesn’t quite land the finish. Also some of the historical social commentary symbolism was a bit on the nose.
But overall, still a great movie that I’d recommend, high quality stuff.
Felt the same way as you honestly. I really believe this movie didn’t need vampires at all, and a lot of weird and silly things started happening once they made the genre switch.
The first hour and 10 minutes were so good that they should’ve kept it that way. Just make it a historical drama/action/musical.
The biggest disappointment for me was the hype though. People told me it would be the best vampire movie I’ve ever seen and that I’ve never seen an actor play twins like Jordan does here. A perfect 10/10 movie. When I hear 10/10, I expect something like Interstellar, 12 angry men, or The Dark Knight. This doesn’t get close to any of those.
This is also not even close to the best twin acting I’ve ever seen. Tom Hardy in Legend is absolutely insane. If you don’t know who Tom Hardy is or the premise of that movie before watching it, you most likely won’t realize it’s the same actor for the twins until about 30 minutes in, that’s how good he was.
Overall, it’d give this a solid 7, maybe an 8. If they had stayed away from the horror genre entirely and kept cooking like they did with the first half, it’s undeniably a 9 for me.
Everything up until the vampires was damn near perfect. The movie does a good job of immersing the viewer into the world of the movie. There are a bunch of interesting conflicts that each character is involved in, allowing the viewer to connect with everyone on screen to one extent or another. It feels like there are a bunch of spinning plates just waiting to fall. But unfortunately, the resolution to these conflicts is woefully disappointing.
I was hoping that the vampires were gonna be used in some interesting/unique way, but it all feels so generic. Not to mention the ham-fisted cultural critique metaphor they tried to shove on top of that. Maybe I need to watch it again or think about it more, but the whole metaphor felt shallow/trite. The vampires just feel like such an awkward narrative tool in the context of what we'd already seen in the movie.
This shit was so good, watched it over the weekend and it’s easily the most creative movie made this decade.
I guarantee you destiny hates this movie
My only issue with the movie is that it was hard to understand some dialogue, I've talked to people with a deep accent but still struggled at times with the movie
Not even Steve could dislike this film
If destiny hates it, it's a must watch.
Great movie very fresh
Growing up in the south myself, I knew after 10 min that so many people were gonna have issues understanding the dialogue. I missed a bunch of it myself.
The Inverse Destiny Movie Index never fails.
Except for EEAAO, even Cramer gets one right now and then.
That movie is so much better than Sinners.
No spoilers. I saw about 300,000 reviews of this movie on this sub, thinking it was all hype and promotion…
And here I am. Sinners was a breath of fresh air that I needed to reignite my faith in the entertainment industry. Much like, The Substance, Sinners was a unique blend of horror, drama, and art.
I really enjoyed this movie. Great script, great acting, and just an overall outstanding movie. I would highly recommend it.
And sorry for being the 300,001st person to write a positive review. It really is a solid movie. (And like months late to the party) 👍 👍
I felt this 100,000%. I love vampires, I’ve consistently felt let down by the latest trend in Black horror, I was fully prepared to HATE this movie. Loved every second.
And there were the familiar vamp tropes, but it did feel like a great blend of drama elements as well. Probably up there (for me) with Bram Stoker’s Dracula in terms of movie quality.
Edit. Tropes, but the rest of the story had me questioning if they were the bad guys or just the other sides of the same coin (with humans)…after all, they were all Sinners
I think that’s what this prologue was getting after
I love vampires but was more than a bit worried when I heard about the "musical" aspect of this. This film truly blew me away. Smart heros, great set up, good gore effects, and fucking fantastic music. I can't hold out hope that the Academy will do the right thing and give Michael B. Jordan an Oscar for this movie, but he sure as hell deserves it.
you're probably a horror veteran - i wasn't impressed. started off strong but ya it dragged and the story was rather bland.
Ive seen soooooooo many horror movies many many times lol so if that counts as a veteran then ill take it. I can agree with your statement, started strong, dragged LIKE CRAZY, then me and my wife could barely finish it.
Agreed. Enjoyed it and would rewatch it but the absolute CRAZE that followed was just not reflective of how good the movie actually was. Even still I’d probably say it’s the sorta blockbuster we should strive for.. I’ll take another dozen Sinners and 28 Years Later type blockbusters that’re thematically heavy and divisive than another Marvel blockbuster ATP.
There should have been some sort of musical/spiritual showdown between Remmick and Preacher Boy and instead they went with an action movie Avenger's assemble shoot 'em up with Michael B. Jordan.
Remmick needed to connect with his past, and Sammie could literally connect the past and the future. All of the pieces were there. All of the themes and music and emotions and everything was in place and the movie turned on the most banal part of the story.
Preacher Boy should have been able to "satisfy" Remmick's insatiableness in some way, he was constantly offering himself throughout the back half of the movie. Either by defeating him, maybe even accepting "the devil" in some way to his father's greatest fears.
Either way, the first 2/3rds were great, but were heading towards a different story than the last third showed.
Yeah the characters had more depth in dusk till dawn, sinners just felt manufactured, like it was ai written lol.
Yup. It was “meh” but we are so starved for interesting horror movies that it gets overrated. And not forgetting the blatant ripoff it is of From Dusk til Dawn.
I’m with you. My main criticism is that the movie opens with the story of musicians who can pierce the veil between worlds. To summon spirits past and present, who presumedly also have that power.
Then it’s confirmed halfway through the movie in one of the best scenes of the year.
Then it’s never brought back. They defeat the vampires by normal, boring means. I don’t know how he should have brought it back, but so much importance was put on it for nothing to come of it.
That’s why it felt half-finished to me.
Yeah there are a few of us - I thought it was well made but deficient in characters and plot. I do appreciate that it was different.
🤮 people actually believe Dusk till Dawn was good lmfao
Tarantino himself knew that was a stinker. It's why he didnt direct it. It's also why he filmed a documentary during the movie as a backup plan. The script literally reads like a 12 year old wrote it and it has all the depth of that level of writing. It's also shot like hot garbage in comparison to Sinners and its not even remotely close. That ugly aged early 2000s CGI. The cringe ass "we got p***y" intro. Clooney's terrible tribal tattoo. The openly atrocious acting despite an all star cast. The complete lack of dramatic impact of anything that happens. Why someone would hold this up as a standard, let alone use it to dismiss a clearly technically and thematically superior piece of cinema is beyond me.
But if you wanted to get really technical, Dusk till Dawn is a rip off of Assault on Precinct 13 which is itself a ripoff of Rio Bravo. The entire idea that anyone stole ideas from anyone is extremely moot.
Who watches this show here? How is it? Is it mostly crime/mystery or are there horror elements to it? What can you tell me?
Definitely not horror, more long-form crime procedural but a career-best performance from Bill Pullman.
Crime, mystery, drama, and violence. But not a horror film.
I haven’t watched the second season yet but I loved the first season. It had some moments that were a little cringeworthy but overall it was great. It’s a why dunnit series instead of the usual who dunnit.
Without giving much away it’s mostly macabre mystery stuff with heavy violence.
Think True Detective season one meets The Night Of.
If you haven’t seen either of those watch them after you binge The Sinner.
I only saw a brief preview and I liked what I saw. I was immediately intrigued.
It’s definitely a show that keeps you hooked. Watching it on TV must have been like torture.
The first series was phenomenal. Not horror at all but great. I've enjoyed the second series. Not as much as the first but definitely enjoyable. Again, not horror. Definitely worth watching IMO
I definitely need to check it out. The very brief preview I saw immediately caught my attention.
It's been a long while since i enjoyed a villain in any movie that much.
I absolutely love how the movie focused on psychological assault Rennic put on the juke crew, the hivemind aspect of the vampirism was fantastic.
Honestly, Rennic was so good. Intimidating, cunning and campy in just the right way. Man just pops up in the film and wrecks total havoc. And although the movie states the clear reason why he wanted to convert Sammie i like to think he was just a vampire dude way too enthusiastic about music
She was cool, but i feel like in a movie drenched in so much symbolism it's hard to ignore the part of her being the one who let's the vampires in to consume the black people. I understand the cultural context of that statement, but seems oddly meanspirited for the film
I like how they tied his Irish past (oppression and erasure of his culture by the British) into his motivation, and how he relates to black people because of it. At first I assumed he would just be a white supremacist but he was trying to build something bigger, even seemed to despise white supremacists.
Don't get me wrong, he's still evil.
I thought it was really smart and clever for the choice of making him an old Irish vampire for reasons you listed!
Also I loved how at the end he was actually right about the white suppremacists coming lol. I had forgotten about when the movie started getting crazier, so that ending actually took me by surprise when they DID show up and got absolutely demolished lmao
I liked it. The Irish guy was a victim too, and purely a cunning villain. He wasn't just a dumb villain for the sake of villainy.
This is if we, the audience, choose to believe him. Everything he said could have been a lie, could have been the total truth. Though they go really hard on Rocky Road to Dublin which I loved and made me not doubt the vampire until thinking about it later. It could have just as well been assimilated knowledge and not longing for his previous lived experience.
I really liked how he jumped into the story (and onto the screen) with little exposition, and no how or why. It worked great. Same the moment of magic in Annie's shack. We don't have to dwell on it or have it explained.
The vampire gang's siren song was great. It would have been tempting. The story isn't criticizing who and what got co-opted by America at large or assimilated by force, but showing the struggle of maintaining a groups own original thing done for their sake.
I felt like there was hundreds of years worth of backstory for Remmick and I was only getting bits and pieces. They did such a good job making him feel truly ancient in a way that a lot of pop culture vampires don’t.
I especially love when his accent slips around the midway point.
I want a movie with him and the Native American vampire hunters. Give me now!
I love a villain that kind of has a point. It allows you to ask yourself if I were a poor black person living under those conditions in the Jim Crow south.. would I have willingly turned? Would I have not at least heard him out?
And that is something that they address by drawing direct parallels between Remmick and the Church. You have Annie, who still holds traditional beliefs and actually does most of the stuff to resist the vampires. And then you have the church demanding that Sammy give up his "soul" for the homogenity of the church, which itself is a result of colonialism. His dad is right, giving up the guitar and becoming a church boy would save him from the vampires... because he wouldn't have a soul left to steal.
I didn't even notice that as a trope reversal. Loved her, probably the most terrifying and heartening shot is her charred corpse. Probably the most visceral moment for me
I think it’s a really interesting take on how even supposedly well-meaning white allies can erase/twist black culture to their own ends too. It’s not lost on me that Rennic is Irish, a people who experienced settler-colonialism themselves and became integrated into the UK and who are traditionally staunch allies of underrepresented groups. By the end I agree with you that I think his intention wasn’t necessarily malicious, he was blinded by his vampirism and couldn’t grasp exactly how it erases individuals and their identities.
Continuing the proud tradition of The Wicker Man and blending horror and musical.
The music all around in Sinners was fantastic—the traditional blues and folk stuff just built such a good world and the music was part of telling the movie’s story.
About as good as a big-budget mass market studio crowd-pleaser is going to get these days. Definitely a little corny and a little clumsy at times, but not painfully so. Some wooden dialogue and moments that felt like they were made for promotional gifs and video-game tie-ins. Nonetheless, it is good.
Middle third has some truly electric and ambitious sequences. The main idea is compelling without being too overbearing, and sublimates well into the tropey action. Tedious video essay makers are going to feast on this one.
A fun time at the movies. Worth seeing in a packed theatre.
It looked like the trailer gave way too much away, and Michael B. Jordan is hardly a good enough actor (imo) when he’s playing just a single character let alone his “twin” or whatever. I’m glad we’re back into vampire genres though—the more things change, the more we’re gonna keep trawling the same dark waters of the collective consciousness.
I just got done watching it like an hour ago, and I have to say if you don’t think MBJ is a good actor, I think you’ll easily have this as his career performance. Like it’s not even close.
Everyone in this movie is a good actor but man this movie got so boring. The main villain didn’t seem evil or powerful enough to be a real threat. How is he running alone by himself?
The klan getting killed at the end was stupid, felt meaningless.
Lots of great ideas held together so try string cheese
Just saw it as well. Agreed
wow yeah, it definitely does give too much away.
I didn't watch the trailer before seeing it, and was expecting the movie to be truly bad, so that probably helped. I also saw it for free so that probably helped too.
Jamie Foxx of ~15 years ago would have been much better as the lead
Seeing it tonight. Kinda have high hopes considering most of Coogler’s films have been tied to a massive IP. So I wanna see it do well and see him kinda flex his own creativity, but can’t say I’m not skeptical.
I’m not Black, Southern, Irish, a fan of Blues, or a twin, but Sinners spoke to me so deeply.
Ryan Coogler is one of the most empathetic filmmakers working today. He embodies the “empathy machine” idea of film being a universal language that can help someone identity with a character whose life radically differs from their own, as well representation for those that do identify.
For the all complaints about a lack originality in Hollywood, there is no excuse not to see this wildly fun, emotional, insightful film.
I’m hard-pressed to think of another movie in recent memory that juggled so many different tones so well. It can flip from silly to scary on a dime.
Also maybe has one of the most moving and beautiful takes on the power of music that I've seen in film in a long time. THAT one scene had me in tears, chills through my body...I can tell so much love for Black music history went into this film.
Thought it was fun & left mulling over lots of ideas. Plus lots of box eating. Perfect cinematic experience.
Only child Eskimo into death metal?
Just sharing to educate and not admonish, but you probably shouldn’t use “Eskimo” anymore, it is the type of word that gets an “often offensive” warning in a dictionary and would be somewhat approaching if OP used “Negro” instead of “Black”.
Thank you! I did not know that at all. Apologies to anyone offended, obviously poor wording on my part.
Quadruplet Canadian into sea shanties
Oh the year was 1778
My movie of the year last year was I Saw The TV Glow. So far, Sinners is my movie of the year this year.
Both are about experiences I can’t directly relate to (being trans, being black or a musician or a vampire), but both moved me a ton.
And my kid who is both biracial (adopted but was told was white until she requested a DNA test) and non binary and we had a blast at both, but especially Sinners. The soundtrack has been going in our house since we got out of the movie.
I went in spoiler free and with lowered expectations due to all the hype surrounding it and all I can say is...Wow. Amazing film. Blends its drama, musical and Horror elements seamlessly and it doesn't skimp on the horror either. Excellent performances, particularly Michael B Jordan, Jack O'Connell & Delroy Lindo.
Easily one of the best films and certainly one of the best Horrors I've seen in several years. Ryan Googler knocked it outa the park with this one.
And considering I'm from Dublin, a certain scene along with its song was a huge and very pleasant surprise.
I can't recommend this film enough and not that I take the Oscars very seriously, but Sinners deserves recognition in this respect so hopefully it gets some nominations. Excellent film.
How the scene with Mary & Remmick ended outside had me jump. I wasn’t expecting it and the sudden cut. It was filmed perfectly.
The hype lowered your expectations?
Yeah as usually when I see a hyped up film it tends not to live up to it, so I went in with lowered expectations due to this and it surpassed them, I wasn't expecting it to be that good.
Ah, a fellow "low trust in others" horror enjoyer
"Sammie!!"
This one and Fréwaka (set in Ireland) are my favorites of the year so far!
I haven't seen Fréwaka yet and want to catch it, and The Devil's Doorway by the same director . :)
I haven’t seen The Devil’s Doorway yet, but it’s going on my list! I know the spooky factor is subjective, but Fréwaka really did scare me!!!
Did you stay till after the mid credits!?! I loved that scene.
I did and thought it was a great way to end it. :)
hey
the story sounds very interesting. i like series about killers like - dexter, the night of.
but i see alot of bad reviews of people saying its garbage etc etc.... and some say it a masterpiece.
anyone here saw it and can give me an honest opinion? my problem is if im not sure a show is good i wont be able to concentrate lol.
It's not really much like Dexter at all, but it was a really good story/plot in my opinion. Worth a watch, but if you're not into it after the first three or four episodes, you probably won't be into it by the end.
It is not a serial killer story like a normal one but if you like psychological mysteries you will like this.
Yes. It was a good show, enjoyable and I’m looking forward to the next season coming on Netflix.
The next season is nowhere near as good, just finished it last night and it definitely doesn't hold up.
I enjoyed the second season all the way until the big twist at the end. Just made me squirm.
Agreed it was alright. Definitely watch season 1 though OP.
ageee 100% on this.
Watch THE SINNER online free. It is finally available for streaming. Enjoy it!
Season 1 is, don't waste your time on season 2.
Yes, definitely good.
I am on the 8th episode I think, and I absolutely love it. A friend just told me that if I keep watching after the first season, I would deeply regret the wasted time. Would you agree ? and PLEASE no spoilers.
And one more request : Could you please recommend a show or a movie that is somewhat similar to season 1. Preferably on Netflix.
Thanks in advance.
I liked the first and second season much more than the third. I really wanted to like the third season too because I like Matt Bomer, but it was just ok.
I agree with your friend. I liked the first season but didn’t like the other 2.
I wouldn't be as drastic as your friend, but I do agree that season 1 is clearly the best of them.
The first one is the best, in my opinion. The third one is better than the second. But all pretty decent
Many thanks.
Omg it was by far the best Crime/drama I've seen in a while! 10 out 10 I recommend to a Friend. I loved all of the plot twists and the ending was so satisfying to see. I've been wanting to watch this show ever since I've seen previews on cable, when it came out on netflix I was super excited to see it. The show was better than I expected. Also did anyone else cringe so hard when Frankies dad pushed the needle in her arm hard and she was saying ow? Gotta admit I was touching my arms bc the cringe was real ugh!
If you havent already seen, Sharp Objects is a new show which reminds me alot of The Sinner. Something to watch while waiting for season 2
I started watching sharp objects before this show and to me it was so bad I quit watching it. As I was looking for another show I stumbled upon the Sinner and boy am I glad i found it. Sharp Objects just tries really hard to be edgy and so far it's all drama and very little crime, like the past few episodes don't really add anything new to the story except for the fact that they're all alcoholics, whether they're 15 or 50.
Omg season 2 looks hella badass I was actually surprised it still came out w The same Detective, Harry. Will definitely check out Sharp Objects
Yeah can't wait for it :). For sure, it's so similar to The Sinner(though only one episode out but it has a similar vibe/style to it).
Hey, yomomaspimp, just a quick heads-up:
alot is actually spelled a lot. You can remember it by it is one lot, 'a lot'.
Have a nice day!

Good bot
Great show! Just binged on Netflix. Great cast, solid acting, twists & turns all done in with good cinematography. Honestly, best thing I’ve seen on Netflix since Ozark.
Omg. I binge-watched this show today with my friends on a whim and wow I loved it so much! Yes, that scene and the bone-crushing scene were SO hard to watch. Also the sis-sest... ugh honestly one of the most disturbing any of us has watched. We were so intrigued the whole way through, and were excited to hear that there will be a season 2 soon.
I haven't been able to get into Netflix show in a while because I just found it too overwhelming, so I've been sticking to youtube. But this show makes me want to look for shows in the same vein/ caliber. Open to suggestions!
Oh I totally forgot about the bone crushing lol but when I saw Phoebe get her rib cage crushed I was shocked af ! It all made sense after that but damn I was like wtf throughout that whole episode. Also forgot about that sis-sest too lol but tbh I wasn't too shocked I mean she did kiss her lol I liked how despite how much Phoebe was bed ridden she was much more daring than her older sister. Netflix has a LOT of good tv shows like damn I watched so many tv shows on there lol maybe you might like Bates Motel haven't finished watching it sorry I'm rambling lol
Wow.
I just finished the show as well in two sittings. Phenomenal show. I would put it up there as a more straight forward True Detective Season 1. It was fantastic and and Beil crushed it.
Same. Started last night, finished just 10 mins ago. It was actually a satisfying ending. Loved the show so much.
