TL;DR The Verizon Unlimited Plus plan offers unlimited fast data without throttling, but video streaming quality is capped unless adjusted in settings.
Plan Comparison and Speed Expectations
Verizon's Unlimited Plus plan is designed to offer unlimited fast data without throttling or deprioritization [3:1]. However, users have reported noticing differences in speed when switching from higher-tier plans like Unlimited Ultimate, which might be due to network congestion rather than plan limitations
[1:2]
[1:4]. It's important to note that both Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Ultimate should theoretically provide similar speeds, with the main differences being in additional features such as international calling and higher video streaming quality
[1:6].
Video Streaming Quality
A significant factor affecting perceived data speed is video streaming quality. By default, Verizon limits video streaming on the Unlimited Plus plan to 480p on LTE/5G networks [3:7]. Users can enable higher-quality streaming (up to 720p) by adjusting their account settings
[3:1]. For those seeking even higher quality, such as 1080p or 4K, this may require an upgrade to the Unlimited Ultimate plan and further adjustments in settings
[2:1]
[3:8].
Hotspot Usage
While the Unlimited Plus plan offers unlimited fast data for smartphone use, hotspot usage is limited to 30GB of high-speed data per month. After reaching this limit, hotspot data speeds are significantly reduced [3:4]
[3:12]. This distinction is crucial for users who rely heavily on tethering other devices to their phone's internet connection.
Network Congestion and Coverage
Network congestion and coverage can also impact data speeds. Users in areas with outdated infrastructure or high congestion may experience slower speeds regardless of their plan [1:4]. It's advisable for users experiencing persistent slow speeds to consider their local network conditions and possibly test speeds at different times or locations to determine if congestion is a factor.
Recommendations
To maximize your experience with Verizon's Unlimited Plus plan, ensure you adjust your video streaming settings for higher quality if desired, and be mindful of hotspot usage limits. If you frequently experience slow speeds, consider checking for network congestion or exploring alternative plans that might better suit your needs.
I’ve had Verizon for about 5 years now, and originally I had upgraded my plan to the unlimited ultimate, which had crazy fast speeds. I was looking at the plan the other day and realized I didn’t need to be paying for the international calling since I didn’t use it, and the 1080P streaming since I don’t stream movies/tv on my phone that much anyway. I switched to the unlimited plus being that it’s supposed to have the exact data package as the ultimate just without those extras.
Well, since switching I noticed my speeds have taken a massive hit. I’ve gone from almost 1,000 MBPS to about 60-300 MBPS. I’ve used multiple speed testing apps (speed test by Ookla and Opensignal) and the results are roughly the same. I would not be surprised if I’m being throttled because of the plan change, but I would like to know for sure. Has anyone else had this happen to them?
The only variation between the two is with streaming video and hotspot.
You’re just experiencing the placebo effect of a recent plan change, alongside transient network congestion.
My unlimited ultimate definitely has faster speeds then welcome all the time. I have 2 lines on welcome. They are not slow slow. But ultimate let’s say might be 80 but welcome will be 30-40. Works fine but definitely capped a bit.
Welcome is different. He is asking about ultimate vs plus, which should not be different.
I have a feeling that because the Speedtest stuff has to do with video that he’s going to see a reduction of speed on plus versus ultimate since ultimates pretty much got things wide open Almost would’ve been worth keeping ultimate if you knew everything was gonna work at peak efficiency
That's incorrect. QOS on both is identical.
To my knowledge (fairly new indirect rep) those two plans should have the same speed and never be throttled. The unlimited welcome 9n the other hand is subject to being throttled in areas with high congestion.
I could be wrong though.
Makes sense. I also live New Mexico where the infrastructure for our cell service as a whole throughout the three carriers is still pretty out of date so I do expect a larger amount of congestion. T-mobile and AT&T also experience throttling due to congestion so I anticipate that would be an issue anyways regardless of the plan, but I haven’t experienced this much of a drop before. I’m going to try it for the month and see if it gets better.
When these plans were introduced there were only two. Welcome which is 100% low priority and Plus which is 100% high priority.
Ultimate was later added which simply adds features (international, faster video, more hotspot, another 50% discount on connected devices) to Plus. Plus is essentially the same plan without these extras.
Ok, so I'm on the Unlimited Ultimate plan. What I'm trying to figure out is, is my streaming speeds supposed to be throttled? I've noticed some buffering on YouTube, and I can't watch 4K content. After just doing a speed test on Fast.com (which shows what your speeds are for watching video on for instance Netflix) Im only getting like 4mbs. I'm new to Verizon, and I'm Using an iPhone 16 pro max. Thanks.
Yes you're being throttled. Even on the most expensive plans you still need to enable HD streaming in account settings. Also I don't think you can stream in full 4K as I think the cap is about 10mbps.
I think yea 1080p sadly
https://www.verizon.com/support/unlimited-ultimate-faqs/
What streaming quality does my phone get with Unlimited Ultimate?
With Unlimited Ultimate, video streams at up to 720p on 5G Ultra Wideband or up to 480p otherwise. And when turned on in your settings, video can stream at:
Up to 4K Ultra High Definition when you're using our 5G Ultra Wideband network on a capable device. Up to 1080p when you're on 5G or 4G LTE.
Im a new customer with verizon and joined the unlimited plus plan in order to never run out of data. Today while sitting here i remembered my old phone plan would slow my data down to snail speeds if i watched a video for too long without realising i was on data.
Is the unlimited plus plan unlimited FAST data?
Or is it limited fast data but technically unlimited since they replace it with near unusable slow data?
Im asking so i can set a data limit warning if need be
Unlimited plus doesn’t have throttled data.
Streaming is throttled to 720p on LTE/5G. Do a Fast app test or fast.com to verify this. If u get approx 4.1Mbps, you’re set for 720p. If u get around 1.6Mbps, you’re getting a horrible 480p, where u need to go either to your online account or in your app to switch to 720p.
If u upgrade to Unlimited Ultimate, you’ll have 1080p at 10Mbps download on the Fast app for LTE/5G but only if u flip the switch on your web account or in the app.
Yes but the streaming quality is regardless of how much data you use. Even if you haven’t used any data you’ll stream in 720. It’s set up that way but you won’t experience a change if you already used a certain amount of data, meaning you won’t go from 720 to 480 just because you used X amount of data in your billing cycle. What you’re referring it’s most likely about network coverage; if you’re in a poor coverage area your video will stream in lower quality to prevent long buffering.
Unlimited plus is unlimited and un-throttled data.
Short answer: unlimited FAST data on that specific smartphone. If you tether (hotspot), you get 30 GBs of FAST data, then unlimited useable slow data, to use your terms.
So it's not unlimited fast fast data then? Which one is it..?! Lol
Oh, to clarify: let’s say you have an iPhone. You get unlimited FAST data when using apps like Safari, YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, etc.
The moment you decide to use iPhone as a hotspot, meaning “sending a WiFi signal out” for another computer or device to connect to, all the devices connecting to the iPhone via hotspot will enjoy the first 30 GB of data with FAST data speeds, then experience unlimited throttled data speeds.
30gb of hot spot are included, but unlimited plus data speeds are not throttled. Only unlimited welcome
It’s unlimited premium (fast) data.
They don't want you to know because they don't want customer to know. That's also probably why they re-named the switch from premium video to vaguely labeled "unlimited data."
No, you’re thinking of the hotspot. It’s completely unlimited fast speeds
Unlimited fast data. You never have to worry about being throttled or deprioritized.
HOWEVER, you have to turn on faster video streaming. If you don't turn this on your video is limited to 480p when on 5G/LTE (2Mbps.). Verizon has this off by default and you have to op-in. Also if you ever change plans remember to go in and turn this back on.
The "Learn More" link below it explains what this does. https://i.imgur.com/OVuVHDK.png
Is it really unlimited or do they start to slow down speeds once u use a certain amount of data?
Unlimited data and unlimited speed are not the same thing
Which do you recommend for speed as I am on unlimited welcome and no one told me about th Boyd with a higher tier plan I bough out my iPhone 15 pro . But when I chose my plan I did I was paying on the spot . Should have chosen pro max but kinda glad I distas I don’t want to be stick with a 3 year contract
First off, There is no contract.
If you outright own your phone. Check out www.visible.com and check out the visible + plan.
Unlimited just hotspot is deprioritized after u use ur allowance
they don't slow down speeds, but they will email you if you go over 900 GB per month.
Depende what tier
Not really. If you are using 5G Nationwide for 900 GB on a regular basis... You're going to get a letter.
Now if you are doing that mostly on 5G UW coverage, they don't care as much. And having a higher tier plan will give you UW network access.
There are meters for each in My Verizon for this reason.
It's unlimited.
It’s unlimited.
I poured it over from T-Mobile last night and for 30 bucks a month all inclusive along with my Apple Watch, that’s a sweet deal! Speeds in my development are decent on LTE but this morning the Ultra Wideband… not bad! This was just outside my development in the suburbs north of Philly.
From what I understand, and correctly if I am wrong, when you’re on Ultra Wideband, it’s unlimited premium data but when you’re on regular LTE or 5G, it’s 50 gigs prioritized?
Even if it’s a little bit slower here and there, I can’t complain for 30 bucks a month it your beats paying 105 to T-Mobile. And even still with the savings, I can afford to buy the streaming services without ads and still have money left over. Well, for now lol. Netflix and their damn 90th price increase.
Most of the time I'm connecting to towers with 400-650Mbps and that's way more then I'll ever need on the 5GUW. The few times I was at some international airports here in the states, I've gotten 3gbps. It's wild.
this is my speed band as well, in AZ
wow nice! wish i got those speeds!!!
My area in the middle of nowhere and a few Verizon towers got upgraded within the last few months.
Don’t forget to enable improved video streaming in the app so video resolution isn’t crappy.
I did that last night. So far the 720p isn’t too bad.
Sounds good. For 4K videos, just enable a VPN.
I ported in. Apparently voice texting likes to make me sound like I’m having a slurring stroke lol
Also if u can't pay ur bill, they will cover it for u for 3 months!! I'm so happy I found them
how fast is the unlimited data plan at 4g and 5g. and how many gb are available before it throttles.
There is no GB allotment before speeds slow down, it's based on the usage in the area.
If you're on the Unlimited Plus plan, you're considered a preferred subscriber, you're not exposed to those congestion slow downs.
On the Unlimited Welcome plan, you have the potential for slower speeds when there is congestion or usage in that area that exceeds what the network can readily handle at that point in time. There is no guarantee it would be experienced at the same time every day, because peak hours and usage fluxuates.
I was told for the phone plans it throttles to 600kbps after 5gb. And there is no throttle at all on the 5g wireless home internet plan? im currently paying 25/month for spectrum home cable internet at 100mbps. The verizon home internet plan cant be 5g speeds for the same price? that would be a no brainer to switch.
You were told wrong. That’s only if you still have the Start Unlimited (no longer available) and it’s referring to Mobile Hotspot usage. The home internet does not get deprioritized.
It depends on the plan and type of device you have. There are multiple options.
data plan people are so evasive to anything home internet.
600 to the Home will shape up to the rise at 100 but the jet plan will be home faster until you break out of the path.
I literally had to talk spectrum down to 100mbps. its not available unless your super poor. you have to qualify for the tax act plan or whatever to even get it. which is a complete and total fraud. 100mbps is fine. videogames run in kbps since the original xbox. that ran at 5mbps. data plan speeds.
I have Unlimited plus and I've noticed I either get really fast speeds 25mbps + or low speeds below 1 Mbps and I usually only get fast speeds in the middle of the night so it seems to me Verizon is lowering my speeds even though I pay extra for them not to do that. I keep calling and they keep giving me the run around.
Is Verizon this congested? I keep seeing these kind of posts. I understand all networks have congestion and location matters but it seems Verizon has this the worst out of all.
It should change since they just got access to all their cband with early clearance. Remember building a new network takes time, however the light is beaming through at the end of the tunnel. https://www.verizon.com/about/news/verizon-5g-network-addition-more-spectrum?INTCMP=oth_b_x_pr_var_pr1_23_08_os_cband
No, that's just congestion. That's normal on Verizon and will be until the C-Band build is dense in your area.
The premium plan gives you a higher priority for what capacity is left, but doesn't guarantee you a speed.
In that same area yours is really slow, there's going to be someone on a lower priority plan that cannot access data at all when you're using it as you've paid for the higher priority than them.
It clearly states that the top tier plan isn't affected by congestion. If it is than that's lying and false advertising
Where does it say that? It just says you have unlimited priority data, not that it won't ever slow down in a capacity contained area. There are physical limits to what can be provided on a "per Mhz" basis.
Again.. there are rules of physics involved here.
In all reality if you really need data capacity at any price point.. Verizon is just not a good choice and has not been for several years.
Until C-Band is dense in your area this will be the norm as Verizon in 700/850/1700/1900 has the least capacity per customer than the other two generally.
That's called network congestion
That's not supposed to happen on the high priced plan. That's why you pay extra. It clearly says speeds won't be lowered on the top tier plan.
It doesn’t say it won’t be lowered. It says it will be lowered after 30GB.
They’re not actively lowering your speeds. It’s congestion.
I thought that they're not supposed to do that with the higher priced plan? It says clearly that speeds won't be lowered due to congestion on the plan. That's why you pay extra for that plan
You can have all the priority data in the world, but if it’s congested it’s congested.
This dude thinking his unlimited plus plan gives him the right to defy the laws of physics 😂
I believed a bunch of people when they said the 450 gig limit was the maximum amount you can use. So after I woke up this morning I did a chat with visible customer service.
I said I believed I found the limit before you are throttled down to 1.5 speed wise. The agent did give their name this time and said your on the Pro + Plan and I have never heard of any 450 gig limit. You're only throttled, unless you are in a congested area or there are many users using the same tower as you was the agent's response. I was then asked for my IMEI number and Esim number to look at a few things and do some repairs.
Took like 15 minutes and they reset it. But they emphasize, like three times during the chat that there is unlimited data and there is no limit on usage. The agent was saying that the network was probably congestion in my area. It's 4:30 AM on a Saturday morning, driving down the highway in the Sacramento. Area, I do not believe it was congested, because in that area. I easily get right two hundred 24 hundred on the speed test.
I just wanted to share my experience.
As long as it is just mobile data that you’ve used on your device you should be able to contact Support they will remove any sort of cap that it gets put on there. They’re not trying to stop people from using unlimited data on their phones. They’re trying to stop people from exploiting the service by putting it into external networking equipment and trying to take advantage of it that way. When you use a significant amount of data very quick it could in theory be you exploiting it so that’s why they put the cap on there.
I don’t believe there is a “hard limit”. However if you suddenly use a lot of data all at once in one day I believe it flags the system I was able to use 890 GB before I got the speed cap at 1.5mbps up and down. However I downloaded 2 box sets of tv shows 230GB of data within 2 hours. I contacted support they removed the cap and I was back to full speed with no issues since.
How did you contact support? Through the app?
Just depends on network conditions. Situations can differ. They basically can do whatever they need/want to "manage the network".
High usage customers should probably not do annual payment plans.
I would take that one with a grain of salt. I have used the annual for over 2 years now. I use 300-500GB a month for travel and just avoid WiFi. Only had my speeds reduced to 1.5 Mbps up and down one month and I used 890GB, contacted support and they removed the cap. I think they look to see if it’s on device usage.
He said they refreshed his line so I’d assume so. They quietly throttle to 1.5mbps after a certain point but they’ll take it away if you reach out to them
How does one use that much data on a smartphone though?
Entitlement. Some people think they are actually entitled an unlimited amount of data for $45/month. The terms clearly say that if you are in the top 5% of users you will get throttled.
The answer is quite simple. People who uses a lot of GBs tend to use the hotspot to fulfill their home internet need.
It's just that if you become dissatisfied, for whatever reason(throttling, depriortization, etc), you've paid a lot of non-refundable money, if you decide not to stay with Visible.
No reason to think one would be treated differently(monthly, annual), if "network management" came into play.
I guess some people don’t have WiFi at home
It's in the terms that you acknowledge to have fully read.
I know they say we get "unlimited" data, but I also know about deprioritization and throttling and all that, so I'm curious about actual rubber-meets-road performance. Has anyone used their mobile data for something truly data-heavy, like streaming tons of HD content or GeForce Now or the like? Do you notice a performance hit after a few days, or is it good all month long?
Answer is very coverage area, specific tower, season (tourist, event), time of day dependent. All the answers in the world from who knows where will not help as much as trying yourself. If speed is that important use a cellphone that supports the latest 5G band aggregation for all US carriers, WiFi 7, Dual SIM Active + toggles in Settings that allow combining multiple cellular / Wi-Fi networks for fastest speeds, AND buy 2 MVNO cellular Promo plans roaming TMO & Verizon- should total $30-50 depending on how well you sleuth promos & if you pay yearly.
I do be streaming a lot. No affects whatsoever. There's a toggle in the app to turn on 1080p. Speeds are unlimited. Since I get UW where I'm at
Show me where please?
In the app, under account, scroll down under usage. Should see HD video.
I jumped from total wireless, tw didnt offer watch add on
I've used 700gb a few months ago , no issues
No notice from Visible?
Nope , and this month I'm at 316GB
That's actually a lie as it's sent after the bills due or close to being due.
Yeah I use it for Xbox series X call of duty modern warfare 2 multiplayer it doesn’t buffer
Recap: Yesterday Verizon refreshed their postpaid Tablet plans, old plans got grandfathered, and there are three new plans: Welcome ($20), Unlimited ($40), and Unlimited Plus ($50). The price here is before the 50% connected device discount.
I made a post about this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/verizon/comments/1mqjys6/new_tablet_plans_lineup_the_welcome_plan_has_only/
Since this post will become very technical, I posted it in this subreddit. Also, my findings show some new network management strategies that I haven't seen in Verizon’s network before. Their phone plans and MVNOs might also implement similar things in the future.
Ok so let's start. I switched my grandfathered tablet plan to Unlimited Plus, and later to Welcome. Sadly I lost my grandfathered plan permanently. Since Unlimited (the mid-tier one) has the same video streaming quality as Welcome, and the same network priority as Unlimited Plus, I didn't test that.
First thing on Unlimited Plus, the video streaming in 5G UW is now throttled! Now to 40Mbps on Fast.com. It was not throttled on old tablet plans and current phone plans on 5G UW (by 5G UW, I mean the 5G UW icon)
However, in LTE, the streaming now is also 40Mbps. Which makes this plan the only Verizon plan that can stream 4K on LTE.
If you read the fine print very closely, it matches Verizon's terms. Under the 5G/4G LTE section, it mentions that:
>(7) video typically streams up to 1080p, and up to 4K UHD when toggled on by user on Unlimited Plus plan (capable device required).
On the other hand, although the Welcome plan supports 5G UW, and does show the 5G UW icon on my iPad, the streaming speed is capped at 4Mbps on all networks, including 5G UW.
For some reason I can still run full speed after 2GB of data, and didn’t go down to 1Mbps. This does not match what Verizon’s plan page or fine print says. Either my provisioning is glitched or Verizon’s page is wrong. I am able to run Speedtest for more than 10GB, still full speed on both 5G UW and LTE.
However, my Welcome plan is deprioritized after 2GB, even on 5G UW. Here are 5G UW Speedtest results at my home, same place, same hour (I also ran the each combination multiple times, and then shuffled, to get the most accurate data. The result are always same):
* Two iPhones are on Verizon's QCI8 plan
Similar finds in LTE also, but that's unsurprising since Verizon always has prioritization in LTE for lower end plans.
Another interesting finding is that hotspot is supported in the Welcome plan. But the speed to hotspot is capped at 0.5Mbps. Although 0.5Mbps is almost unusable these days, allowing enabling hotspot could be a very useful feature to let iPad set up a local LAN network.
Before this tablet release, usually the Verizon plans that supported 5G UW can run on QCI8, and they had basically unlimited premium 5G UW data and never deprioritized on 5G UW. Now the new tablet plans are quite different. Based on the fine print, the mid-tier and high-tier tablet plans will also suffer deprioritization after 50 or 100GB on 5G UW and 5G UW usage will counts to the premium data bucket, unlike before.
This is awesome info, thank you for testing!
This is a copy of the OP's original post in case they decide to delete their post/account so that others searching can find it later:

Verizon Unlimited Plus data speed
Key Considerations for Verizon Unlimited Plus Data Speed:
Data Speeds: Verizon's Unlimited Plus plan offers 4G LTE data speeds. After reaching a certain threshold (typically around 22 GB), your data may be deprioritized during congestion, which can lead to slower speeds.
5G Access: If you have a 5G-capable device, you can access Verizon's 5G network, which provides significantly faster speeds compared to 4G LTE. Check if your area has 5G coverage for optimal performance.
Video Streaming Quality: The Unlimited Plus plan typically streams video at 720p (HD) resolution. If you want higher quality streaming, you may need to consider other plans or add-ons.
Mobile Hotspot: The plan allows for mobile hotspot usage, but speeds may be capped at 600 Kbps after using a certain amount of data (usually around 15 GB).
Network Reliability: Verizon is known for its extensive coverage and reliable network performance, which can be a significant advantage in rural or urban areas.
Recommendation: If you frequently use data-intensive applications or stream videos, the Unlimited Plus plan is a solid choice, especially if you live in an area with good 5G coverage. However, if you find that you often exceed the deprioritization threshold, you might want to explore higher-tier plans that offer more data without deprioritization.
