Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is available on a wide range of platforms. It was originally released for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 [1]. Over the years, it has been re-released in several editions including the Special Edition and Anniversary Edition, which are available on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4
[1]. Additionally, Skyrim is available on the Nintendo Switch, making it accessible to a broad audience across different gaming systems
[1].
Elder Scrolls Online (ESO)
Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) can be played on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms. The base game is often bundled with various chapters such as Morrowind, Summerset, and Elsweyr, and is available from digital retailers or console stores [2:2]. For Xbox users, ESO is also available through Xbox Game Pass, providing an accessible option for players on that platform
[2:4].
Platform Preferences and Modding
Many players prefer playing Elder Scrolls games on PC due to the availability of mods, which enhance gameplay and offer customization options not available on consoles [3:2],
[4:2]. However, some console versions, like Skyrim on PS4, do support mods, albeit with limitations compared to PC
[3:1]. Players who favor controller use might choose consoles like Xbox or PlayStation, though PCs can also accommodate controllers
[4:6].
Future Releases and Platform Considerations
With the upcoming release of Elder Scrolls VI, there is ongoing discussion about the best platform to play it on. While PC is favored for its modding capabilities and flexibility, Xbox Series X is also a strong contender, especially since Microsoft owns Bethesda [4:1],
[4:7]. There is speculation about exclusivity, but Microsoft has historically supported cross-platform releases
[4:3].
Recommendations for New Players
For newcomers to the Elder Scrolls series, starting with either Skyrim or Oblivion Remastered is recommended. Both games have unique qualities and independent storylines, allowing players to start with either without missing out on essential plot points [5:3]. Skyrim is noted for its action RPG style, while Oblivion offers a more traditional RPG experience
[5:2].

You forgot the Legendary Edition
or maybe not.
Legendary Edition is a bundle.
Anniversary Edition on the other hand is sold as a DLC (it's on the list), as well as a bundle (not on the list).
There's a legendary edition? I didn't know that
Hello,
I'm a bit confused on where to buy the base game to try out the game. Thank you
There are several options but all you NEED is any version that says it includes the Base game. You can buy it from the ESO website or other digital retailers for PC. For consoles you buy on the console store.
Is it the one that costs 59.99 Greymoore? not the 39.99 one for PC
There is one for 20 (or at least close to it). It comes with the base game and the first expansion (Morrowind). It is the cheapest out of all the options.
The basic ESO is just the base game bundled with the Morrowind chapter.
More expensive options are the base game bundled with Morrowind, Summerset, and Elsweyr chapters (Elsweyr Edition), or pre-ordering the Greymoor Edition that's the base game + those three chapters and the upcoming Greymoor chapter.
If you’re playing on Xbox, the base game is on Xbox Game Pass.
If you got a ps4 the base game is on ps now. Ten bucks a month for it plus a ton more great games
I’m pretty sure I’m like a lot of people. I started playing on console but I wanted mods so I switched to PC. I’ll probably also get TES6 on PC if it can run it but if not then Xbox.
Skyrim on PS4 Supports mods
PC. Even removing mods as a factor I just prefer mouse/keyboard controls for anything first-person.
You can also use Keyboard and Mouse on PS4
I started on playstation, but I wanted to play while I was at uni, so I got a copy for my switch
I prefer console rather than PC and play on PlayStation.
Me to
All of the above
Sorry, didn't know how to do a poll.
Probably pc, but xbox has been pretty friendly towards mods so it should still be a good choice
Xbox will be restricted to using Bethesda.net for mods, which will likely force the best mods to be paid.
PC will have many, MANY unapproved, free mods on the Nexus, making it the superior platform to play on.
How will Xbox be restricted? Microsoft now own bethesda so they set the rules
PC if you like mods Xbox/PS if you like controller. Though obviously pc can use controllers. So really anywhere where you game the most.
Since when is Elder Scrolls 6 coming to Sony? Is God of War also coming to Xbox? Maybe a Zelda game on PS5?
MS may have bought Zenimax but MS has said in the past they don’t believe in exclusives, Pete and Todd both said that nothing is changing in the way they publish games and that there is nothing to worry about. MS owns Minecraft and Nintendo just had a massive circle jerk with it today. TES is the biggest western RPG in gaming, do you really think they are going to let all that potential money go? It’s absolutely insane to think that it’ll be exclusive. At the most it’s a timed exclusive but they aren’t going to let that Skyrim potential sales numbers go.
I can’t stand not having mouse/keyboard controls and ALL the mods so I only ever play TES games on PC, but YMMV.
Having the command console is nice as well. Really helps when you encounter bugs.
Yes, that. Hell just using it to get around followers blocking the door is enough to stick with PC.
PC, there wont be any script, size or any limitation with mods
PC is where ES thrives but ive played both Oblivion and Skyrim many times over back in the day on the 360. While you won't get the same customization, you'll be fine either way
Hello I’m not new to Bethesda games i played a bunch of fallout but never any elder scrolls i was wondering if i should just get Skyrim or get Oblivion Remastered for my first elder scrolls?
Skyrim is more action RPG (you’re basically a superhero that can do everything in the game in a single playthrough) and oblivion is more old school rpg (you’re encouraged to commit to the character and build you create, meaning a mage-heavy character might not touch the thieves guild in their playthrough).
Personally, I find Oblivion to be much more replayable than Skyrim, but you’ll get plenty of hours out of Skyrim in one playthrough. You can’t go wrong with either, and should definitely play both eventually, so it’s really up to what you’re feeling. If you want a power fantasy, go with Skyrim; if you want an RPG that feels like you’re playing through a fairytale, go with Oblivion.
You can venture and do whatever you want despite your attributes, class system, and so forth in Oblivion. You’re not locked in to one faction or anything at all. It just helps guide you to get extra bonuses and things.
Either way works. Each game has an independent storyline so you can start with any game just fine. They do reference each other occasionally, but this is mostly through history books (Skyrim is set 200 years after Oblivion) and a handful of recurring characters, so you're not going to miss much.
As for which game is the better one, that's a bit subjective. Personally;
Both are definitely fantastic games and you can't really go wrong with either of them. But I'd personally lean towards Skyrim a bit.
Definitely Oblivion Remastered first
Skyrim is absolutely the best one released, but if you know you will play both, go oblivion then skyrim
Well I’ve started with Oblivion Remastered and I’m having a blast so far, 55 hours in. And it’s got me even more excited to eventually move into Skyrim after.
Hey everyone, I’m new to the Elder Scrolls series, as in I had no idea what it was besides the word Skyrim because everyone talked about it back in the day lol. Recently, I managed to get all of the games on steam for sale for like 65 dollars in total. I’ve watched gameplay of all of them and I think they all look really cool, especially Oblivion and Skyrim. So, as a new player to this series, which game do you think I should start with? I plan on getting to them all, but I’m sure all of you know what’s best lol.
Also, I plan on getting ESO later down the line.
Not Arena. Hard to play and quite dated. More something you want to play if you're already into TES.
Daggerfall if you want a giant procedurally generated world with a lot of RPG options like climbing, advantages and disadvantages, etc. and you don't care about graphics and can get used to the dated controls. You can download a sort of updated version of it though. Daggerfall Unity, I think it is.
Morrowind is the most original, strange world. Still very much an RPG. Combat still isn't very kinetic, very dice roll based. And the graphics are still kind of old, though significantly less so than Daggerfall and Arena. And with mods you can make it look, not modern, but still pretty. And if you don't mind reading a lot because you talk a lot and voiced dialogue is rare. No quest compass either, so if you're not used to finding your way you might take a while for some quite simple things. Some people like this, I don't, so your mileage may vary.
Oblivion Remastered would be my biggest recommendation. Completely modern graphics. Good control. Combat isn't amazing, but it does feel kinetic and I still enjoy it. Still a strong RPG experience, if a bit less so than Morrowind, Very good side quest writing. A quest compass to allow you to find your way around, but not overbearing, imo. I like that, some people don't. Oblivion Remastered I think is the perfect balance between a good RPG but a modern design and graphics. World is completely gorgeous, but it's less unique than Morrowind's and less nuance to things like factions.
Skyrim is by far the easiest the easiest to get into. RPG characteristics are reduced but still present. World is very fun to just explore and live in. Quest writing is much worse than Morrowind or Oblivion though, imo. Especially the factions I found disappointing. Better environmental storytelling than any other TES game though, imo, and an insane number of mods to make the game almost whatever you want.
Battlespire and Redguard are not RPGs.
If you're looking for basically a really expansive experience and don't care so much about things like story or graphics, play Daggerfall.
If you're an RPG veteran looking for a unique world and a very nuanced and interesting setting and are alright with it being a bit dated, go Morrowind.
If you like RPGs but maybe aren't a veteran and you want great side and faction quests and modern gameplay and graphics without losing RPG roots, play Oblivion.
If you want a game with good graphics and modern controls and want to mostly wander around an expansive world with great immersion and environmental storytelling and care less about RPG elements or storytelling quality, play Skyrim.
This is amazing. Thanks! Going off what you have provided, I’m leaning toward Oblivion then Skyrim. As for Morrowind, I definitely don’t mind reading a lot. As for the older games, pre Morrowind, I definitely want to check them out and I don’t mind the graphics, but I’m not going to act like they’re more appealing than the more recent games so they would be last for me personally.
If you can mod Morrowind, throw on voices of vvardenfell. It's a project to completely voice the game and absolutely transforms it. I'm 75 hours in and haven't finished a single guild so be ready for the long haul
I actually thinkt hat Arena is much easier to play than vanilla Daggerfall. Daggerfall is much more mechanically complex and you can soft locked when you do not do the second main quest in the right time.
Play Skyrim. It's fun, simple, quick to pick up. If and when you like it, Oblivion will be fun. Continue with Morrowind and more if you like the story and type of gameplay.
Redguard
I knew the top comment would be either Redguard or Battlespire.
Are you familiar with RPGs in general? Especially older RPGs?
If not, Skyrim has the lowest learning curve.
Otherwise, Morrowind is a rich and interesting experience.
I’m not familiar with this style of RPGs. I normally play souls games. I don’t even remember the last time I played a first person game. lol.
Morrowind, oblivion and skyrim can be play in 3rd person.
A pirates life for me
Never played any elder scrolls game. So would like to ask with which game is best to start. Didnt even played rpg games much overall. But i would like to get in it, atleast try it.
I would say Skyrim is the most easily accessible for a beginner
Start with Skyrim. If you like the game, go backwards.
Oblivion. Skyrim is usually everyone's 1st choice, but Oblivion is truly a great stepping off point for any new player.
Skyrim and go backwards
Start with the most recent game and explore from there. The most recent being Skyrim for Main Series and Elder Scrolls Online for Spin Offs. The older games (Morrowind and Oblivion) are great, but they lack modern amenities that might turn off newer players. If you really end up loving the series I'd recommend looking into Daggerfall Unity. And if you really really love the series or just hate yourself, I'd recommend Arena. If you really really love the series or just hate hate yourself then try Redguard/Battlespire. If you hate the series and yourself try the mobile games.
Hello! I’ve recently been seeing a lot of stuff on elder scrolls and am really wanting to get into it. I’m wondering what game would be the best to start with? Oblivion remastered or Skyrim? Thanks a lot!
Honestly the oblivion remaster was the easiest for me to get into. The mechanics are nice and straight forward, and you easily learn everything organically. Although if you want a game that isn't a buggy mess, Skyrim has been the best option for me. Especially since you can get mods that can fix bugs bethesda refuses to see or change! Just personal opinion/experience though! <3
Does oblivion not run well? I’d be playing it on ps5.
It runs wonderfully in my opinion, I play it on Ps5. Only real issue is sometimes it'll crash before you get past the start menu, but that is not very often.
Either is a good pick, in my opinion. If you choose the Remaster, you are doing the right order, so to speak, as it's been graphically updated and some mechanics cleaned up, but it's earlier in the order as Number 4. I've been playing since 1994 with Arena (Elder Scrolls 1), so wish to offer advice if you like history & lore in your games - read the books or collect the books for your own library in the game.
Oh wow man you’re a real veteran, I’m more interested in experiencing a great open world adventure and story/lore rather than combat. Do you think oblivion is still a good option to start with?
Thanks for the nice way to say I'm old. 😀 Lore is in both, and the many books are repeated in Skyrim. The story is a mixed bag, exploring & adventuring are the keys to Elder Scrolls, finding cool places and dungeon delving. Combat happens when you interrupt the denizens of the places you go, part of the game.
Play oblvion then, side quests are chefs kiss the world is really fleshed out its so gawd dayum good. Skyrim is goofy in comparison, fun, but goofy
I started with Oblivion original, though I feel Skyrim would be a better introduction gameplaywise. Both games are excellent in their own right.
I’m coming into it more for the story and open world exploration not as much combat mechanics. Is oblivion still a good choice for me you think?
Yeah people here and myself agree the story is alot stronger. I feel if you care alot about story, Oblivion Remastered might be your best bet. If you care about exploration and variety of dungeons, I feel Skyrim has tons for you.
Oblivion had a better story. So did Morrowind.
Both are good but in my personal opinion to truly get into the Elder Scrolls I say start with Morrowind
What's the difference.
one is the base game, the other is an expansion for said game. go to steam, on the greymoor page it will tell you "requires eso (the base game) in order to play it.
Both; ES:Online is required for Greymoore as Greymoore is an expansion / chapter.

Why is Skyrim the only game that gets each console version counted as a seperate release?
Nobody says Cyberpunk 2077 was released six times.
I unironically expect some sort of Skyrim content releasing, along with some starfield and fallout 76.
Maybe if the planets align we get another teaser for tes 6.
would be funny if they made it even shorter and more cryptic this time
It'll be a preview of the basket-weaving system (which will eventually be cut, and most of the resources transferred over to pottery instead).
Tes6-jack? Why are you sad? Are you stupid?
Don't you know laughter is the best medicine? Don't you know you are doing self-harm by putting so much stress on yourself?
I can teach you how to enjoy muatra dysfunction and skooma induced pubic baldness my friend. All is joy flowers and horker fatty steak when you laugh, why cry jack? Why cry when you can simply realize how funny it is?
