Java Edition vs. Bedrock Edition
Minecraft is available in two main editions: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The Java Edition is exclusive to PC, offering a robust modding community and extensive customization options [1:1]
[2:3]. On the other hand, the Bedrock Edition is designed for cross-platform play, making it accessible on various devices such as PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows 10, and mobile devices
[1:1]
[2:1].
Platform-Specific Purchases
For those interested in playing Minecraft across multiple platforms, it's important to note that you generally need to purchase the game separately for each platform. While the Java Edition allows installation on multiple PCs, the Bedrock Edition requires separate purchases for each device [5:1]
[5:4]. However, there was a period when purchasing the Java Edition provided access to the Windows 10 version, but this offer has since ended
[5:3]
[5:7].
Most Popular Platforms
The Bedrock Edition is widely popular due to its cross-platform capabilities and accessibility on mobile devices, which makes it the most purchased version globally [4:1]
[4:2]. Mobile devices are particularly popular among younger players who may not have access to a PC or console
[4:3]. Despite this, the Java Edition remains highly recommended for its modding potential and is favored by many long-time players
[4:4]
[4:7].
Choosing the Right Platform
When deciding which platform to purchase Minecraft on, consider where you or your child will play most frequently. If playing with friends on different devices is a priority, the Bedrock Edition is ideal due to its cross-platform functionality [1:2]. For those who prefer extensive mods and customizations, the Java Edition on PC is the better choice
[3:2].
My sons’ birthday is this week and the #1 thing on his list is Minecraft. Looks like several different versions are available, not to mention that you can either purchase the app OR buy the PlayStation game OR download on PC.
I’ve read the Q&A on the website but need some additional clarification. Is there a way to purchase it so that you can use it on multiple platforms (iPad/phone, PlayStation, PC)? Not sure which method of playing he will like using best; what do most people do? Any help would be appreciated!
You could give him a card with a handmade coupon in it promising one copy of Minecraft on the platform of his choice. On Christmas Day when he opens it you can set it all up then. And Bedrock would be best because like the other guy said it's cross-platform, so he would be able to play with his other friends no matter what their console is.
Love this idea. Thank you!
Java Edition is for PC only
While Bedrock Edition is for almost every platform, I recommend buying bedrock for your son as it is crossplatform
Keep in mind, if you want your son to be playing it on multiple platforms, you’d have to buy minecraft on each device. So if he plays on PC i’d get him the bundle of java + bedrock but if he plays on other devices i’d get bedrock
Ahhh that makes sense. Thank you!

I have a PS4, PC and a phone, all of these have Minecraft Bedrock Edition (I guess PS4 update has also rolled out? I'm unsure) I've heard that if I buy Minecraft on one platform I'll have it on all platforms, is it true? So let's say I buy it on PC, will I have it on PS4 and phone aswell? AND do I still need ps plus for it on PS4?
The reason I'm asking this is the only two Minecrafts I've played are Xbox 360 edition and ps Vita Edition, I'm thinking of getting Bedrock Edition but don't know which platform should I get it on
Edit: My Question is Unclear. Bedrock Edition is available on PS4, XB1, Switch, Win10, Android and iOS. I was asking which one of THESE platforms, anyways I've decided I'll either go with Win10 or PS4. Thanks for the answers. ^-^
Java for PC. Best.
Would've bought Java but my friends have Bedrock. :(
Bedrock is any of PS4, WIin10, XB1, NS.
buy java edition on pc
Buy it on pc
Will I automatically have it on PS4? Or will I separately need to buy it for PS4?
Separately but PC version is better and I think there might be cross play but then again Sony doesn’t do that :/ Just get PC version
Buy for PC
JAVA
Mostly java pc because I can play modded
ps4 most of the time but i play on my laptop ocasionally if im at skool and the teacher isnt looking
PC
Java PC
PC JAVA.
I've tried the Windows 10 version, but really just prefer the one I have been playing with for 7/8 years now.
Basically which platform has the most number of downloads.
according to https://www.pocketgamer.biz/ they claim that "Mobile is the most popular platform for worldwide Minecraft players". I would agree with this as most children wouldn't have access to Java edition but may have some sought of mobile device which now falls into the bedrock category.
I don't doubt that mobile is the most purchsed, but their article seems to be back from 2016 though. I want to see a more recent source.
I understand it isn't recent but I still believe that its true as I said most people who own Minecraft are young children who bought it on a mobile device as its the most readily available device to a child. Its not like a 6yr old is going to have a pc or even a console is still hard to believe. Anyway good luck on your search.
Well ig that could be right but most people playing bedrock don't play servers. So people who play multi-player are probs using Java
Not necessarily……. Bedrock has a much better multiplayer system for worlds, where you can hit create and all your friends can join without a server (yes I know it is technically a server, but not a server in the minecraft sense)
good thing op isn't asking about multiplayer ;)
Overall, but what age range? Which country? Which demographic? A 14 year old from India is going to have a different gaming experience compared to a 22 year old from the US, for a multitude of reasons.
Java edition
java is typically the most recommended, but mobile is by far the most accessible and the cheapest, so I would be very surprised if it wasn't mobile
from this sub its probabaly bedrock
Going by this sub you might think Java edition, but at this point 5 copies of a bedrock version of the game have been sold for every 1 Java copy. Half of all copies of Minecraft sold have been on a mobile device. Java players are just more likely to use Reddit.
Very true
I first started playing Minecraft like 8 to 7 years ago and I quit but started playing again and I'm kind of confused. So I want to buy Pocket Edition and was wondering if I only have to buy it on one platform to play on the others like Windows and Java.
EDIT: Do I get Windows Edition for free if I get PE?
U have to buy pe by itself, but for me I got java edition and discovered windows edition and realized it came with it
If you have java, they give a free code for Windows 10 Edition but you have to buy PE if you want to play.
Only if you bought Java prior to Oct 2018
No they don't that stopped ages ago.
Oh I see
You have to buy each platform you want to play on individually I believe
Really? It was exclusive for the release of Win 10 Edition then?
Java can be installed on as many different platforms as you want (that'll run it).
Bedrock needs to be purchased per device.
Hi, looking for some help here. I have an almost 6 year old who loves to build. Legos, K'nex, etc. I'd love to get him into Minecraft!
I'm not 100% sure where I should start him off. Options I have available to me are: PC, Playstation, Switch & Mobile.
What do you think is the best option & why?
What would be the healthiest or most convenient set up for you guys? Playing on mobile would mean he'd be able to play it anywhere, but PC or playstation are stationary options that make it easier to set boundaries with gaming time.
Do you want him to be able to play multiplayer with anyone, and if yes, which platform will allow him to play with those people?
If he'd be playing on an adults phone that's in everyday use, keep in mind that it will drain the battery quickly and it will take time to save when you need it back.
If you end up going with mobile or anything with a marketplace, make sure you have a password set up so he can't spend money(accidentally or on purpose) without permission.
PC because it's easier to control the finances. Kids do tend to want more and more and different cosmetics and that all costs money on bedrock. Java makes you learn it to do it yourself.
Also don't underestimate your kids. They can learn quite quickly to make skins and setup mods and everything java offers.
pc is ultimately the best way, you can teach them for tech skills on that like u/danisaintdani said.
also, its my personal favorite platform.
best of luck to your kid!
give him minecraft on the gadget he plays the most
maybe a pc because java edition is much better (imo)
I use to play on Xbox 360 when MC released on it. Once i got a ps4 in 2015, i've played it on PS4 since then. Every few years i get back into the game; every few years, there is an intimidating amount of new content and changes to the way things work (looking at you, broken redstone machines). I try to go through patch notes but they are so different depending on what version of the game you have, and even figuring THAT out isn't as easy as i thought it would be.

So what is the ps4 version of MC? Is it legacy console edition, and it's receiving no further updates? Is it bedrock edition? what do these things mean? which versions have had their updates canceled for the foreseeable future? are all consoles using same or similar versions of MC?

I'm sorry for being such a smoothbrain i just have never understood and simply gave up trying to learn, but now here i am, asking for your help in understanding. Thank you.
There are essentially 3 versions.
PC has the java version not relevant to you.
Bedrock and legacy console editions are available for various consoles.
On the main menu if you can see bedrock edition under the title minecraft, you have bedrock.
Bedrock is purchased online. It gets updates synced with all other versions except legacy console.
Legacy console editions are those you got from a disk offline. Legacy console afaik does not get updates anymore.
From what i’ve been reading and piecing together, it seems like legacy console was what USE to be on all consoles, but it’s been discontinued. Which makes sense for ps4, because it was discontinued a year ago, i haven’t played in two years, and MC now looks and feels way different (the main menu, the crafting menu, etc). So it appears they like, “upgraded” me to whatever the current edition is? Because it doesn’t look like how it use to, and the whole “offline” game isn’t even an option anymore when i create a world.
The title screen doesn’t say bedrock edition, but it does say “v1.16.61”, which i know 1.16 is the latest java edition as well. So i guess it’s all the same kinda thing now? I saw some things mentioning cross platform play if i signed in with a microsoft account.
I’m still confused lmao
The versions for both java and bedrock are in sync now. Both are 1.16.
Edit: I did some reading. Latest version on PS4 was 1.95.
You have bedrock 1.16.
Bedrock is just named Minecraft now
I took my son to see the new Minecraft movie and he loved it. I own a ps4 and he wants to play the game now. Where do i start? The ps4 edition, the starter collection or elsewhere?
Thanks in advance
Ps4 edition would be fine
Is there a difference between the 2? And is there an actual story mode or end game to work towards?
no, the main Minecraft game has no story.. its simply a build whatever you want type of game. There are a tonnnnne of DLC though that I believe some of have a story mode.
I dont see a Starter Collection in the store so I have no idea what's included, or if what you are looking at is just DLC that you'd need the main game for anyway
By the way.. there is a free demo, why not install that and try it out
My daughters play on the ps4 and love it. Look at free expansion there are a ton of them even my 4 year old will make some crazy stuff on there
Just "Minecraft" is what you want.
There are other games
Story Mode Dungeons A tower defense style game (can't recall the name)
All those are different games that use Minecraft as as the world.
Story Mode is a Telltale game that uses choices to determine the story's outcome (a similar game was "the Walking Dead" and "A Wolf Among Us")
Dungeons is a Diablo clone set in the Minecraft world (it's fun, but it isn't Minecraft, except in the world and characters).
So yeah, just "Minecraft".
You should mention that Story Mode has long been discontinued now. I think the tower defence game is called Minecraft Legends
It has but if you can get hold of a physical disc copy of episode 1, you can use it to access the remaining episodes on the ps store and download them. 1 to 5 are included, 6 to 8 cost extra. The same works with Story Mode season 2 as well.
FWIW I got the first season for my Minecraft mad stepson and he says it's really boring and nothing like playing proper Minecraft.
Well, I didn't because I didn't know that...
Thank you for your additional information.

If computer Java or windows 10?
Java, sometimes VR
PC - Windows 10
Mobile because you can play wherever you want as long as you have data
I know right only problem for me is I like external controls like controllers or keyboard
Apparently I connected my ps4 to my phone I forgot how
Where all my Switch homies at?
I used to play switch alot but I got a computer to play windows 10 so I can easily download add-ons and stuff
Mobile
I have a 7 year old kid who loves Minecraft, he watched a lot of YouTube videos of other players playing but has not played it himself.
We have a switch and he also has a good Android tablet of his own.
My question is what is the simplest version for him to get started on?
Between a phone and a switch: definitely a switch
Switch
The switch has better performance and simpler controls, so for a young child, I go for the switch
