TL;DR Final Fantasy games are available on a wide range of platforms, including PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, PC (Steam), and mobile devices. Some versions are also available on older consoles like the SNES and Game Boy Advance through emulators or classic editions.
Modern Consoles and PC
The Final Fantasy I-VI Collection is available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and mobile devices (Android/iPhone) [1]. While there isn't a dedicated PS5 version, the PS4 version will work on PS5 due to backward compatibility
[1:1]. For newer releases like Final Fantasy XVI, it is initially exclusive to PS5 with plans for a later PC release
[2:2]
[2:4].
Older Consoles and Emulators
For those interested in experiencing the classic versions, Final Fantasy games have been released on platforms like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and PlayStation One. These can be accessed via emulators or by purchasing a SNES Classic, which comes preloaded with some Final Fantasy titles [4:1]
[4:4]. The Game Boy Advance also offers versions of these games, often with updated translations
[4:2].
Portability and Modding
When deciding between platforms like the PS4 and Switch, consider factors such as portability and additional features like trophies or achievements. The Switch offers the advantage of portability, while the PS4 provides trophies [5:1]. On PC, players can benefit from mods like the Moguri Mod, which enhances graphics and gameplay experience, making it a popular choice for those who enjoy customizing their gaming experience
[5:3]
[5:5].
Conclusion
Ultimately, the best platform depends on personal preferences regarding portability, graphical enhancements, and controller familiarity. Whether you prefer playing on modern consoles, enjoying the nostalgia of classic systems, or enhancing your experience with mods on PC, Final Fantasy games offer a versatile range of options to suit different gaming styles.
Silly question here. I know that this has already been released on Steam and Android/IPhone, and the list of platforms that the games are coming to in Spring 23 include Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch; but no mention about the curren Gen consoles...
Is it safe to assume that a title WILL be also be available for PS5 if it's coming out to PS4, or is that a no-go?
I'm guessing it'll be on all consoles, but on PS5 it'll show as a PS4 game/bundle.
Everything but Xbox.
These are 2d pixel games. There is no reason whatsoever for a ps5 version. The PS4 version will work flawlessly on both generations of hardware.
I don't think there's any reason to have a dedicated PS5 version. It's not like those games will run any different
The only potential benefit would be load times.
Considering the load times when playing the games on a PC with an SSD makes no difference, there wouldn't be any difference between a PS4 and PS5. The only times the games load is when you first load up a save file. Why they even take as long as they do to load to begin with baffles me though.
>and the list of platforms that the games are coming to in Spring 23 include Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch; but no mention about the curren Gen consoles...
Playstation 5 can run every Playstation 4 game except currently 7 of them.
And the PS5 store includes many PS4 games. Most of the games installed on my ps5 are PS4 games that have no explicitly-Ps5 separate version.
I've only seen the PS5 logo in the official page...
Pretty sure it's PS5 only at launch and coming to PC at a later date.
As far as consoles go it'll probably be PS5 exclusive for the foreseeable future.
It stated "Also coming to PC" only to have it removed in the reupload.
There isn't a single 3rd party game that is exclusive to PS5 that didn't show up on PC day-1, that includes Forspoken. Hard to think Square (and for the most part, Sony) would lock themselves in a single console that is having shortage issues.
The console shortage has no bearing on if a game will come to PC day one. I wish people would stop saying this.
PS5 and PC
Similar situation as FF7 remake. Ps5 only for maybe a year or 2(maybe indefinitely if sony buys square) with a pc release after.
I feel as though Buiness Divison 3 knows a lot of their fans, through FFXIV, are on PC. Sony could buy exclusivity rights on Console, but when it comes to PC, it'll probably be Epic Store Front. Maybe not day 1, but eventually.
I assume these are decent deals?
$44 (PS4/Switch): https://www.amazon.com/FINAL-FANTASY-Collection-Anniversary-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B0DCKFWW1V/ (Edit: Note, it does require Prime to get)
$49 (Steam): https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/21478/FINAL_FANTASY_IVI_Bundle/
Which version do you guys recommend?
I have it on steam and switch. It really doesn't matter. I personally am tired of the achievement/trophy stuff and wish that would just stop now. So I tend to stick with Nintendo more
I bought on steam because I use a steam deck
all are fine, and run the same, so do what you feel most comfortable playing that type of game.
Steam. You'll never have to buy them again.
Steam. In case you get a steam deck or any steamos compatible handheld.
Heard so much good about the game, and I’ve played more than half of the series but somehow not this. I own a Mac with Steam, a Nintendo Switch, and a PS4...best way to experience this game? Thanks all!
Funny, I was talking to an employee at a pet store about this just the other day; I say find a SNES emulator and find a rom of Final Fantasy III. This way you’re getting the classic, somewhat silly translation and look of the original. Or find a GBA emulator instead; that version has a more refined translation, if slightly lesser visuals.
The best edition is the Super Nintendo version
You can buy a SNES Classic for like $80, and it comes preloaded on there. Plus you also get Super Metroid and Zelda: A Link to the Past. Totally worth it.
Does the snes classic version let you 2 player?
This is what I play it on
Snes emulator is very close to the original experience. Enjoy! You're in for a treat!
Also gameboy advance and playstation one on the final fantasy anthology collection.
This is probably asked frequently so sorry but I’m wondering what console to get the game on. I have a ps4 and switch but I’m not sure where to get it, I don’t use the switch docked that much if that influences anything. Thank you in advance
Both. Really it all depends on your preference and what console you play more. There's no mechanical or visual difference between versions on ps4 and switch aside from trophies that I can tell. I personally have em for both but only because I saw it discounted and decided to double dip.
If you have a pc I would suggest getting it on steam so you can get the moguri mod
Between ps4 and switch I would go for switch. The mobility factor will win it for me.
But besides that? Pc + moguri mod it's the best choice for a casual gamer.
PC + Moguri mod to play at home.
Switch to play when you are away.
Pc for moguri mod. 4k texture.
In no particular order:
Switch- offers portability
PS4- offers trophies
PC- offers achievements and can install some mods
Personally, I did PS4 simply because I played the original on playstation, and I am used to the PS controller for FF games of that era. It also allowed me to get some trophies which added another level to the game that wasn't available for me on PS1. I don't do much undocked switch gaming, so that didn't have any weight for me as I like playing on a TV. Also, I'm not tech savvy and am too lazy and apathetic (read: I don't need 4k graphics for games like this) to bother with PC.
It really comes down to what your preferences are. Either way, it's a fantastic game.
After finishing both Remake and Rebirth I want to try the original, but I'm not sure what platform to get it on. Are there any major differences between the PS5 version and the Steam version?
I assume there might be mods available for the PC version, but I'm not sure if there's any good ones that would enhance the experience.
PS5 version likely will play better. Steam has shit controller support. You need to play with it to get it semi decent.
If you don't mind that, you can use mods on the steam version if you really don't want to level grind. Having played the OG more times than I can count, I used mods so I could replay the game a little quicker with out the grind and enjoy the story.
Steam + 7th Heaven, absolutely the best way to play even if you aren't into graphics enhancers (which I have no problem with, make the game look like FFIX in the OW and it's a win)
There are so many mods now, voiceovers, upscaled textures, IX style models, but the one thing I always leave the same is the battle effects (like the auras and fireballs). You can even change the difficulty. Not to mention FFVII was on sale on Steam the other day for like 5 bucks. If you can get it on Switch, that's another good platform just for portability.
There aren't significant differences, as far as I know, if you don't plan to mod your game. If you do, obviously go PC. I'm partial to the Switch version (to play on the go, the smaller handheld screen also helps the game not look as old), but I also enjoy the PS4/PS5 version because they added the Remake reveal trailer to the main menu, so it feels special in a small way 😆
Switch i great, played 9 on it Pc works fine too
Don’t listen to all the pc players. Fuck Mods and Fuck sitting upright for hours to play a Final Fantasy game.
Get it for your PS5. You dont need anything to “enhance” it, except for maybe the X3 speed 👌
You need nothing else
I’m a casual gamer, and I have zero idea about Final Fantasy but I’ve heard a lot from people that they’re good so I just need somewhere to start from. (I have a PS5 btw)
Bro I played every FF but I, II and XIII. All of them are full story's so you don't need to play them in sequence (beside X and XIII that have 2 or more games).
There's a lot of good FF just to name some III, IV, VI, VII, IX, X, XIV, XV, XVI. FF XI was a MMO for PS3 so you can't play anymore. FF XIV is also a MMO and is one of bests FF imo.
I think a good start point is FF XV which is a newer game, have one of best FF story's imo, have an active combat engine and has all elements of classical 2D FF games.
But if you would like to start with the classical one's I say FF IX is a good one to start. A excellent game with a good story, good pace in the turn based engine and nice graphics.
My personal top 5 games in the franchise are VII, XV, IX, IV and X.
I hope this help as a guide but to say the truth wherever you start you will be good cause there's no bad FF games.
Just to finish don't start with FF VII Remake cause it's not a complete game, it's a good remake but the story is too long and Square make it in 3 games with the last one yet to be released.
Anyway I wish you a GG.
It depends on what you're after.
Lots of plot, turn based, interesting world, don't mind a lot of reading? Any of 4 - 9.
Beautiful world, interesting plot, turn based, real emotions? 10
Set up an AI to do the fighting for you, and tweak it as you need to? 12
Want something like an interactive movie that won't let you become overpowered, 13
MMO with an amazing story that you can sink hundreds of hours into and barely scratch the surface? 14 (and it's expansions. Free trial is expansive, Yada yada look up the ff14 free trial meme if curious).
Action game with RPG elements? 15 (though you will need to watch the movie, two anime, and four DLCs to get all the story. Oh, and the book for the alternate story.)
Action game with absolutely stunning cinematic cutscenes and amazing Kaiju fights, but light on the RPG aspect? 16.
An expansive series of games (and a movie) with a deep world? 7. Start with the Original, then Crisis Core Reunion. Then Remake. Then Rebirth. And then wait with the rest of us for the last one.
My personal favorites are: 5, 7, 9, 10, 14, and 15.
5 is whacky with a kinda depressing story.
7 is a classic and the game that got me into gaming.
9 is again, cute and whacky and the story is super dark when you think about it.
10 is just an all around amazing game that I replay every year. Every year since 2002.
14 starts off as a bit of a slog, but by the 12 I have felt so many emotions because of that game. Each expansion continues the story and is played in order. Get through the base game and into the first expansion and you'll find yourself immersed in one of the best final fantasy stories.
15 is under rated because of its split media. As long as you get the Royal Edition, you'll get a good experience. Starts off open world, but the last few chapters are one thing after another and quite railroaded. But you can go back to the open world at any point that you can rest.
A lot of people swear by 6, but I personally couldn't get into it. Still worth a play though.
Overall an excellent write up but I'll add that anyone can play FF15 and just watch a synopsis on youtube to get the rest of the story.
I feel like telling people they need to watch a movie and 2 animes is going to turn most people off of this game.
OP, this is the best answer, right here. Please go with this one ❤️
With any game you want that's not a continuation of a previous title. That's most of the games. Alternatively, you can play them starting with Final Fantasy and going through them consecutively according to their numbering.
Do final fantasy 16 Excellent. Easy to follow. Great characters and one of the best stories every told I. A video game
Thanks guys for all the suggestions!! I kind of heard that everybody kind of started with f7 or the remake of it and I think I will go with that too.
I had the very first FF demo disc for PS way way back and I barely remember it. Is there a good place to start with the FF set? Can I start at PS and work my way up on Ps5? Not sure what is even available these days.
Anything to know before getting into it?
Thanks!
Can’t go wrong by starting with vi and working your way up, and skipping 13 (my own subjective opinion…hated 13). Come this September I heavily vouch for playing Final Fantasy Tactics.
Any of them. Ff13 was the beginning of the serie's downfall.
I played all of them except 15. I would say the best one to start with is 10.
They all have completely separate plots and very different gameplay mechanics, so it doesn't really matter which one you start with. 6 and 7 are generally the most well regarded ones, but they're old. If you would rather start with something more modern, 16 and 7 Remake are both very good. And 10 is my personal favorite.
I’m fine with older games! I just have no idea. If 7, is the one for the OG Ps then I’d likely start there. Is the remake a lot different from the original?
Oh yeah, the remake is almost a completely different game. The story, characters, and everything are the same but the visuals are completely changed and look gorgeous, the combat system was completely redone, and it plays like the best of the modern games. OG 7 will probably feel very dated and certainly is by comparison to the new one.
That being said, if you want something more modern, FF16 is subjectively excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute with it, it’s super emotional, the boss fights are incredibly epic, and it’s just well-done all around
The remake is very, very different from the original, to the point where it's probably not even fair to call it a remake. It really is a completely different game. Both games are excellent. I would probably start with the original, cause it's kinda fun to see what they changed for the remake.
Also voting for 10. Has an amazing ost, loved every one of the playable characters, a lot of memorable scenes.
How is the quality of graphics of 10 compared to more recent games? I was eyeing since it is currently on sale.
It does show its age but the cgi scenes were miles ahead of many other games at the time. I still think it looks amazing and very well done. The turn based action isn't as refined as expedition33. And the strongest weapons are one of the most rage inducing rng bs to ever plague videogames, but you can finish the game without them.
Absolutely. There's a direct sequel which was a massive disappointment but the story closes very well without needing to play the sequel.
Start with FFVII. Thats my advice. The numbered titles dont share common stories so after 7 you can play 8, or 9, or 10 etc without any trouble.
Why not put the 13 trilogy on sale for the Xbox console 😭😭
Worth noting on the Microsoft Store, Final Fantasy I-VI and IX are only listed as on sale on Xbox Consoles and not PC, but they have Xbox Play Anywhere, so you only buy them once and can play it on either.
