What's in the Lava Zone in Subnautica

TL;DR The Lava Zone in Subnautica consists of two main areas: the Inactive Lava Zone and the Active Lava Zone. It features hostile creatures like Sea Dragon Leviathans, valuable resources such as Kyanite, and significant structures including the Lava Castle.

Lava Zone Overview

The Lava Zone is divided into two sections: the Inactive Lava Zone and the Active Lava Zone. The Inactive Lava Zone is stacked above the Active Lava Zone [1:1]. This biome is characterized by its extreme heat and volcanic activity, making it a challenging area to explore.

Key Structures and Resources

One of the most notable structures in the Lava Zone is the Lava Castle, which serves as a central landmark within the biome [3:2]. The Lava Zone also contains valuable resources, such as Kyanite, which are essential for crafting advanced equipment [3:3].

Hostile Creatures

Explorers in the Lava Zone must be wary of several hostile creatures. The Sea Dragon Leviathan is a formidable predator that guards the area around the Lava Castle [3:1]. Additionally, Lava Larvae can drain energy from vehicles, but they can be managed with a thermal reactor or by flicking the Cyclops' shield [3:3][3:5].

Base Building Considerations

Building a base in the Lava Zone requires careful planning due to the presence of aggressive fauna and environmental hazards. Some players recommend constructing bases near the Lava Castle or at the bottom of the vertical shaft between the Lost River and the Inactive Lava Zone [4:1][4:2]. Ensuring hull integrity and managing power consumption are crucial when setting up a base in this area [4:3].

Scientific Explanation

While the presence of lava underwater may seem unusual, submarine volcanoes are real phenomena on Earth [5:1]. However, the depiction of open lava lakes in Subnautica is more of an aesthetic choice designed to enhance the game's visual appeal and challenge [5:2][5:12].

Step 1, find entrance. Step 2, go into lava zone.

I know how to get to the lava zone because I have made a base in the lost river. So should I not be prepared for the lava zone and just go in blind?

So youre asking for tips once you're in there? Ok. Bring some extra water with you, find the lava castle (took me a while to find it hiding in plain sight). Bring tablets with you as well.

Edit to your edit: it's a fairly easy and short biome. Both inactive and active. Just make sure you have a prawn suit with a drill arm and maxed out depth module.

Nobody asked, but fire extinguishers needed (if you're in Cyclops) also, get the reinforced diving suit and rebreather, I highly recommend taking Prawn with drill arm and grappling arm, it makes everything easy peasy, but never forget that you will need to dodge fire, if you haven't been to lava zone before.... You will understand

Also if in cyclops, lights out and silent running will help, so slowest speed and watch out for leviathan proximity and it it gets close switch everything off. Remove power cells when you park it just in case. Also bring spares. Also, bring spare food into the deepest zones cos the stuff down there took me longer than I would've expected and it would be sad to expire from hunger or thirst half way through.

As a general note if you take the prawn into buildings of whatever kind be aware that it might get a bit stuck on floors or be somewhat inconsistent about whether it "thinks" it is in water physics or not. Quite a few things have this uncertainty - I have killed two bonesharks merrily swimming around in air-filled spaces, at which point they rolled over dead and floated around in the corridor. Just use the grappling arm to unstick yourself if you find you get stuck.

If you’re going in the east entrance it’s pretty natural to keep going down to the active lava zone at the bottom, skipping the Lava Castle. Watch your depth and make sure you don’t do that.

[Spoilers] I reached the inactive lava zone, help!

Posted by MRIT03 · in r/subnautica · 4 years ago

I finally reached the inactive lava zone and holy shit is it actual hell! Those lava larvae are beyond annoying, what is the best way to get rid of them ? Cuz disembarking the cyclops with warpers everywhere just to knife those little shits doesn’t seem like a solid idea. I found 2 chunks of kyanite (Yay!) but they were guarded by a sea dragon leviathan (not yay.) I assume that drilling them with a Prawn suit will attract the dragons’s attention, or do they not have good vision ? And what about the other fauna, specifically the sharks are they as annoying as the other sharks or are they tamer ? One did attack me in my prawn suit, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt since I intruded on its lava shower.

Fauna aside, what is there to actually do in the lava zone ? I know it’s the only place for kyanite and there’s supposedly a fortress in there ? Is that all ? It didn’t seem like a big place, just a corridor leading to an inner circle where all the stuff is, and I didn’t find a way to go any deeper than 1300, and there’s supposedly about 1800 m, how do I get down there ?

Finally, is it a good idea to put a base there, if yes then where would be the best spot?

Also yes, there’s the Lava Castle in the middle of it, and a couple ways deeper. All of which is guarded by the dragons. Sonar makes it all easier.

Flicking the shield on and back off will remove all larva from the ship. If you get a thermal reactor though you can basically just ignore them.

Came to say exactly this, shield flicker and/or thermal module will make those energy leeches irrelevant.

There should be a mountain somewhere in the middle of the cave. That's the fortress. There should be a pit to the south of it and lava falls to the north. Those are your ways down.

[deleted] · 4 years ago

I don't really know, but I suggest you don't bring your cyclops down there, only your prawn. If you have the grapple hook arm, the thermal reactor, the proper depth modules, and the jump jet upgrade it's super easy to traverse. I suggest you make a lost river base and dock your cyclops there for emergencies, but only go to the lava zone in your prawn, since it's much easier to notice and kill the larvae on your prawn. I kind of speedran this area of the game just by zooming through in my prawn. (edit: there's a deeper lava zone under there, and there are 2 entrances, i suggest you watch a tutorial for that because i couldn't find it for a while even with tutorials, also theres a cool loking rock formation with tunnels inside of it that lead to an alien thermal plant that you need to go to in order to progress the story.)

You can teleport back and forth in it. Just park your cyclops outside the gate

2 upvotes on reddit
AzureFencer · 4 months ago

I built one near that big pit near the lava castle. You could still very much hear the Sea Dragon, but the the area seemed just outside their area and the nearby warpers. That said there was a continuous presence of larva, so make sure if you park your cyclops to either make sure it has the thermal mod, or unplug the power cells when not in use.

Though... I will add if you're intending for this to also be a base to be a jumping off point to get into the lava lakes. Uh... do not. I had a hell of a time basically just running from a Sea Dragon that was dead set on my demise when I finished in the Thermal lab...

How is there lava underwater?

Posted by Guard_Dolphin · in r/subnautica · 23 days ago

So I've almost finished my first playthrough and I'm super confused how there is lava in the lava zone/lakes when everything is underwater. I tried finding the reason on forums but people just redirect to the wiki which has no answer as to why. Is this just how lava works or is it an aesthetic choice I shouldn't look too far into?

Video Game Science. Bear in mind there’s something very strange about water on 4546B, too; crystalline salt deposits just sitting there underwater?

This is actually one of the more realistic aspects of this game. You should rather be asking how the fuck Riley Robinson's janitor ass can withstand greater pressure than a deep sea submersible with a titanium hull, or how he is completely immune to the bends.

I would assume his suit takes care of that, to slowly increase and decrease pressure no matter how fast you ascent/descent. His incredible swimming speed is a lot more questionable

You get to the Lava Zones via the Lost River, which you access through the Blood Kelp Zone or an entrance in the Mountains biome.

1 upvotes on reddit
myfairdrama · 6 years ago

To get to the Lava zones, you have to enter the lost river. There are several lost river entrances, I usually use one in the deep grand reef. Following the lost river will take you past a precursor base and cache, and you’ll eventually get to the Inactive Lava Zone/ILZ Corridor, which is mostly stone with lava peeking out. Following this path will eventually get you to the Lava Lakes and the Active Lava Zone.

You’re going to need several depth upgrades for your cyclops/prawn suit. It’s too deep for the seamoth, even with all the depth upgrades. The thermal reactor is a good idea too.

I use the entrance near the mountains and bulb zone and then go straight before turning right to the ghost leviathan tree.

Note: I killed the ghost leviathan in my way.

From there I built my base around vents and used the surrounding deposits to fuel my adventures. It also was a nice refuge from the never ending danger of the depths.

Deeper location >!I also turned left before finding a strangely global rock that looked unnatural and then kept going forward to go even deeper. !<

The Lost River entrance near the front of the Aurora, near the bulb zone.

Just travel down until you find a massive hole straight down

Only downside is the ghost leviathan but he's really easy to evade

When you get down, the area you land in should have enough kyinate without going below depth

The easiest entrance to find is just to get to the big tree in the lost river, and then keep going.

7 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 7 years ago

Two entrances at least that I’m aware of. The easiest to describe is to go to the big tree thing and keep going to the next room beyond it. The shelf ends and you can go underneath it and down.

I prefer the other way though. It depends on where you come from but the way I go down to the lost river, if you go to the disease research base and keep going through that passageway you’ll come to a big room. There will probably be a ghost reaper here. It has yet to be an issue for me. Just go silent and have a decoy ready if he sees you. You’re going to drop down the hole right where the room opens up. Very hard to miss. I prefer this way because it’s a shorter trip, but you do have to go through the reaper. The other way has no leviathans unless one gets drawn over that way.

What's in the lava zone in subnautica

In Subnautica, the Lava Zone is one of the game's deeper biomes, located below the Lost River and above the Inactive Lava Zone. Here are some key features and considerations:

Key Features of the Lava Zone:

  1. Environment:

    • The Lava Zone is characterized by its dark, volcanic landscape, with lava falls and thermal vents.
    • The temperature is extremely high, requiring players to manage their heat levels.
  2. Resources:

    • Lithium: Commonly found in this zone, useful for crafting.
    • Uraninite Crystals: Can be found here, which are essential for nuclear power.
    • Kyanite: A valuable resource used for advanced crafting, including the creation of the Cyclops and Prawn Suit upgrades.
  3. Creatures:

    • Ghost Leviathan: A large, aggressive predator that roams the area. It can be dangerous, so be cautious when exploring.
    • Lava Lizard: A smaller creature that can be found in the Lava Zone, but it is less aggressive than the Ghost Leviathan.
  4. Structures:

    • The Lava Zone contains several important locations, including the Primary Containment Facility, which is crucial for the game's storyline.
    • There are also various thermal vents that can be used for energy and heat management.

Recommendations for Exploration:

  • Prepare Your Gear: Ensure you have a reinforced suit and plenty of health packs, as the environment can be hazardous.
  • Use the Prawn Suit: This vehicle is ideal for navigating the Lava Zone due to its durability and ability to withstand high temperatures.
  • Be Cautious of Predators: Keep an eye out for the Ghost Leviathan and plan your routes carefully to avoid encounters.

Exploring the Lava Zone can be rewarding, but it requires preparation and caution due to its hostile environment and aggressive creatures.
