What's in the Safe Shallows in Subnautica

Overview of the Safe Shallows

The Safe Shallows is one of the initial biomes players encounter in Subnautica. It is generally considered a beginner-friendly area, offering essential resources and a relatively safe environment for new players. However, despite its name, there are several hazards to be aware of [4:1].

Resources and Environment

The Safe Shallows is rich in basic resources like limestone outcrops, which provide copper and titanium—essential materials for crafting early-game items. The biome features coral tubes, kelp forests, and thermal vents that can be used for power generation when building bases [2:1]. It's also strategically located near deeper areas, making it an ideal starting point for exploration [2:2].

Hazards in the Safe Shallows

Despite being labeled "safe," the Safe Shallows contains several threats. Crashfish are notorious for surprising players with their explosive attacks [3:7][4:1]. Other dangers include Gasopods, which release toxic clouds, and Stingers that can cause damage if touched [4:1]. Occasionally, larger predators like Reapers or Ampeels may wander into the area due to game bugs or player actions [5:1][5:3].

Base Building Considerations

Building a base in the Safe Shallows offers several advantages. The area provides easy access to solar power due to its shallow depth and proximity to the surface. Some players prefer locations near thermal vents for additional power options [2:1]. The central location allows quick travel across the map, making it convenient for accessing various biomes [2:2].

Unexpected Encounters and Bugs

Occasionally, players report encountering unexpected creatures in the Safe Shallows due to AI behavior or game bugs. For example, hostile leviathans may drift into the area if they break from their patrol paths [5:1]. These occurrences can lead to surprising and sometimes dangerous encounters, adding an element of unpredictability to the otherwise calm environment [5:2].

The coral tube that sticks straight up out of the water just to the Northeast the bank slopes down towards the grassy plateaus. To me this is the ideal location to build. It's in the very middle of the map. Has access to deeper water. You can get anywhere in the map in a prawn suit in less than 5 minutes.

Anywhere? It’s the “safe” shallows. I suppose building near one of the two thermal vents would make for easy power.

3 upvotes on reddit
Zethren527 · 2 years ago

I would argue that is a bad idea because they are so loud and solar power is plentiful.

I'd suggest either the North end or South end depending on what you want. North to >!be closer to gun island (with plentiful lithium, diamonds, gold)!< or South to >!be closer to an entrance to the lost river!<

!Although, I think there is an entrance to the lost river up north as well? I've never used that one so IDK.!<

That's my home. I even have a friendly cow (gasopod) on my lawn constantly singing his song of joy everytime he sees me (I've built my first base on his territory, probably. Everytime I get out of the base, he starts gassing me and crying)

On my hardcore run I considered these the only true threat to ending my run.

Leviathans I can outrun, outmaneuver, or just sacrifice my vehicle to. But if you’re clumsy enough to trigger two crashfish in early game when you have no seaglide and no fins. You just might be instantly dead.

Yeah. The AI is a bit wonky. A lot of critters wander far from home. One time, it was a Reaper. Another time, it was an Ampeel. Reapers like to clip through cliffs. I've died once while in a... safe house...all because it clipped through. Was at the final stretch, too.... So long hardcore save....

I had a Reaper and an Ampeel somehow drift in to the Safe Shallows in previous save file. Every time I passed my lifepod I'd see them duking it out lmao. I think if you drive around in your Seamoth or Cyclops with the front lights on it can pull hostile fauna, although sometimes I see it happen without my intervention. Earlier today in my hardcore playthrough I went to a wreck in the Bulb Zone that I had never been to before, but from my last playthrough I knew it was supposed to be relatively safe other than some Ampeels, but once I pulled up a Reaper came roaring out from below and snapped one of the Ampeels. It was quite shocking, but a pretty cool moment, especially since he didn't come for me. I think it was the Reaper that patrols next to the front of the Aurora and he must have somehow been aggroed by an Ampeel that came a little too close.

Or there's just something funky with the game's AI sometimes, I mean look how often Reefbacks wind up beaching themselves in the Safe Shallows, or getting tangled up awkwardly in the Kelp Forest. I played Below Zero before the OG game, and in BZ Leviathans all follow a very obvious patrol path that they pretty much never break away from, so I was pleasantly surprised when a Reaper showed up randomly in the beginning area of the game, I like being forced to be on my toes like that! If that had happened my first time ever playing though, I might not be so positive about it lmao

I'm all but done with my 2nd play through and I never thought of planting a brain coral. I guess I wouldn't have much use other than for visuals but its pretty cool.

I'm trying to think of an area that is really tight where I couldn't fit a seamoth but once inside I could build a bed and plant these.

I mean you don't really need to either, which is one of my few complaints. After a while you realize just how small the map is and how much of a waste of time building more than one base would be.

Why does a tank with 45 seconds of oxygen even exist?

Actually never thought about that. Even though standard O2 tank is pretty small

33 upvotes on reddit
SteveV076 · 6 years ago

Yeah... And IRL a heavy tank could get you like 6-8 minutes on a tank.

Subnautica, many years into the future with an 'Ultra-Capacity' tank is still less than that

29 upvotes on reddit
TheAlphaRIP · 6 years ago

You forget that this tank got the tech in it, to refill nearly instantly and on it's own, as soon as there is some air around you. So you need to fit a tank, as well as a compressor and a pump among other tech stuff in it. I think 45 seconds don't sound that bad anymore if you think about it.

Just imagine what a hassle this game would have been, if you'd need to spam your inventory with oxygen tanks just so you can switch between them and would need to refill them to make them work again and a station in your home base or your ship...

It represents a wide host of issues:

  • The loss of biodiversity from the reefs themselves is significant, but when you account for the food chains rooted in reef species it reaches far beyond that, causing problems like:
  • Devastation for coastal and island counties economies, which in turn impacts the global economy.
  • Loss of a global food source.
  • Loss of potential medicine production.
  • Loss of scientific inquiry.
  • Dying coral reefs represent the loss of significant carbon draw-down and notable oxygen production. By itself not a huge deal, but when combined with the rest of the global climate issues it represents an exacerbating factor.
  • Increased erosion on shorelines.
  • Increased ocean acidity.

All of the above might not impact you directly, but over the years you will feel the ripples from it - you might not realize the cause, but it will happen.

What's in the safe shallows in subnautica

Key Considerations about the Safe Shallows in Subnautica:

  1. Location: The Safe Shallows is the starting biome in Subnautica, located near the crash site of the Aurora. It's characterized by shallow waters and a vibrant ecosystem.

  2. Resources:

    • Common Materials: You can find essential resources like Titanium, Quartz, and Copper Ore.
    • Plants: Look for Creepvine, which provides Creepvine Seed Clusters and is essential for crafting materials like Fiber Mesh and Silicone Rubber.
    • Food Sources: You can catch small fish like Bladderfish and Garyfish for food and water.
  3. Fauna:

    • Friendly Creatures: The Safe Shallows is home to non-aggressive creatures like the Peepers and the Hoopfish, which can be harvested for food.
    • Predators: Be cautious of the occasional Stalker, which can be territorial, especially if you venture too close to its den.
  4. Base Building: The Safe Shallows is a great location for establishing your first base due to its accessibility to resources and relatively safe environment.

  5. Exploration: As you explore, keep an eye out for wrecks and other points of interest that can yield blueprints and additional resources.

Takeaway: The Safe Shallows is an ideal starting point for gathering essential resources, establishing a base, and preparing for deeper explorations into more dangerous biomes. Make sure to stock up on food and water before venturing further!
