Overview of the Lost River
The Lost River is considered a late-game biome in Subnautica, characterized by its eerie and atmospheric environment. It serves as a critical area for story progression and resource gathering [1:5]. The biome is known for its unique flora and fauna, including Ghost Leviathans, which are both intimidating and fascinating
[3:1]. Players often build bases here due to its strategic location near endgame resources
[3:1].
Key Features and Resources
The Lost River contains several important features and resources essential for advancing in the game. Notably, it houses nickel and crystalline sulfur, which are vital for crafting advanced equipment [3]. Additionally, there are alien facilities that provide significant lore and story elements
[1:1]. The biome's design includes waterfalls and green-hued waters, adding to its mysterious allure
[3:5].
Entrances and Navigation
Accessing the Lost River can be challenging, with entrances located in various zones such as the Blood Kelp Zones, Grand Reef, and Bulb Zone [5:1]
[5:2]. The Blood Kelp entrance is recommended for finding nickel
[5:3]. Navigating through the Lost River requires careful maneuvering, especially when using larger vehicles like the Cyclops due to narrow passages
[2:4].
Fauna and Threats
The Lost River is home to Ghost Leviathans, including juveniles and adults, which pose a significant threat to players [4:1]. While some players find these creatures calming, they can be dangerous if provoked
[3]. Warpers also roam the area, adding another layer of danger
[2:5].
Atmosphere and Player Experience
Many players describe the Lost River as a calming yet dangerous environment. Its unique atmosphere, combined with the presence of Ghost Leviathans and other threats, creates a memorable experience [3]. Building bases in this biome allows players to immerse themselves in the game's deeper lore while preparing for the final stages of their journey
[3:1].
In summary, the Lost River is a pivotal biome in Subnautica, offering essential resources, intriguing lore, and a distinctive atmosphere that challenges and captivates players as they progress towards the endgame.
Pretty much where I put it.
Lost River isn’t the end game, but it’s at the door steps of it. Obviously you can only go a lil deeper
But you could feasibly go there fairly early if you made that choice. But I think most average players first time there they are likely nearing the end of their first play through
bro that’s what i’m saying, that thought just makes the lost river that much cooler
Late game. People who say mid game are bonkers. There is like…. 5% of the game’s content after Lost River. It’s cool content. But it’s still very speedable. No voice logs. No pdas. No survivors.
No one else got as deep as you.
I think Marguerite may have made it to the Lost River
Having just finished a hardcore run, I think 5% is a bit of an exaggeration. I'd say a solid 30% of my hardcore game was based in my secondary, Ghost Tree base - my main base for all endgame content.
Granted, it was hardcore mode, so I did a good chunk of careful exploration down there, but still. There's a good amount of story there, it's just more you-focused. Thermal plant + the lava lakes and the emperor means lots of back and forth from surface to the PCF. I think if you speed through it sure, it's fast, but I'd argue you can speed through a lot of the beginning of the game in a similar way!
Exactly, I make a pass with the Seamoth for resources, construct what can be constructed for a bit deeper, then move in for late game encounters.
1 Is the shallows, kelp forest, and grassy plateau, 2 are things like the jelly caves, mushroom forests, and aurora, 3 are the other areas around the map you explore, 4 is lost river and finishing the deeper parts of the other areas, and 5 are the lava zones
in my opinion anyway
Late game.
It might be middling in how much more you're going to keep playing, but by the time you've explored the River you've already found most of the tools you can play with.
Yeah, the last two biomes are pretty big. Unless you've memorized the layout of the ILZ you could take a bit to make your way through.
First time I found myself there I was somewhere about 2-3. That was a lot of fun. There quite by accident, under equipped, and kept prodding in and out scanning things and collecting resources then running away again.
Subsequent playthroughs I'd agree with your numbering.
Aurora 1. Islands 2. Bases 3. River 4. Lava 5.
Assuming you build everything as it unlocks.
I think you underestimate things in the game that aren’t physical space. In terms of crafting, story, biome diversity, discoveries, logs, and flora/fauna documentation…. The remaining game after the lost river is reskinned fauna, lizards, kyanite, a two short alien facilities, sea dragons, and…. Yeah. It’s a lot of open space. But not much there to do or explore.
And no reaper leviathan,
Edit my bad spelt it wrong damn autocorrect
Western Grassy Plateaus look for a big ol’ hole, keep going down and slowly make your way right in the ravine, around 600 metres down there should be an entrance with a light green hue. Best part? No “Raper” Leviathan 😁👍
Y slowly
Because if you're in a cyclops, it's a little narrow and you have to watch your keel cam to avoid bumping into things.
And also it's easy to miss that right-hand turn into the arm of the trench where the entrance is.
Because Warpers roam there.
One end by the white plants with the red round thing you use for making something another acces point by the blue round low plants.
Not very clear sorry.
no WHAT leviathans???
edit: i’m making that my flair
When I hear that beat-boxin' in the depths I know it's time to run.
Rapper =/= raper
How do you edit your flair?
I just tried seeing what happends if i go in a certain way with my sonar constantly and saw a gap and found it (bad idea i use most of my batteries from cyclops)
mine: the lost river isnt scary, its calming even. it might be dangerous ok, the ghost leviathan is actually so cool and not even scary imo, its just so cool, the way to it is a bit scary tho. i just went there right now and i got a full prawn suit inventory of nickel and 5 crystalline sulfur didnt take that long
You shouldn't be able to kill or stasis leviathans
Also, Ben prunty is the best composer by leaps and bounds, and as long as subnautica 2 doesn't use AI for anything, and keeps him as the composer... It will probably be worth it.
So then there would be no reason for the stasis gun? I disagree about not being able to kill them ONLY because I had one follow me and wouldn’t leave the safe shallows so I finally went with my drill arm on the P.R.A.W.N. and took it out.
I think that stasis is meant for leviathans, however killing them shouldn't be possible unless you are using weapons that won't be obtainable in the Subnautica survival games, due to the massacre on Obraxis Prime.
You should be able to kill them, but yeah not stasis. Killing a leviathan shouldn't be as easy as freezing them and then dropping a dozen gas pods on it. There should be an actual challenge if you want to make the ocean safer.
lukewarm ngl, I think the lack of darkness makes the lost river lose its scare factor.
I think you're not wrong. Some hardcore cave diving, actual darkness, where if you lose your light or disturb the silt layer, visibility drops to effective zero, would definitely add a certain je ne sais quoi.
And also give you an actual good reason to use the sonar module. I made it once in my first playthrough and was like "damn, this is really useless."
You can change the setting, giving you less than 10 ft visibility in the lost river. My first play through it wasnt scary but i was wondering why i couldnt actually see. A friend came over to help me navigate it and said you should be able to see both walls. Went into settings and changed it for me and i could see a lot more. Didnt realize there were different light settings.
I really only found it useful with the cyclops in the inactive lava zone. That's the only place I couldn't see even with the lights
If not more. Base building/housekeeping are fun as hell and I like the seatruck/module idea.
I also like having all the stuff to do on land. I do wish there were reasons to HAVE to build a terrestrial base, and that the prawn suit didn't make the land-based stuff so easy.
Ya, one of the coolest areas ever, the juxtaposition of the blood kelp right before makes it even better.
This is SUPER important to me. Seriously. Its like the game design was at odds with itself. You can't build everything until just before the point where you no longer need it. I often find myself wishing the designers would have allowed me to build early and the base hub and cyclops become a longer part of the game. I get why they did it: You don't spend time in the water as much once you get the cyclops, which changes the experience from fear of the unknown to fear of hitting things.
I think the solution is this: make exploring more rewarding. That way if you are enjoying your base building you don't get done just as you finish the game. "side content" and DLC where there is another story that starts from your base would be fun.
Also:
Why didn't people like the sea truck? Cyclops is largely a mobile base. Customize! Among other things. I liked the seatruck but didn't like "trucking" back and forth and HATED the warp box implementation.
Its always my deep base build spot. I build just outside of the waterfall. I use a large room and then at the end I throw an observation room with a bed in it s I can watch the ghostie swim around.
plus it adds a bit of danger to build right net to that ghostie.
Yes, that one spawns near the entrance in the blood kelp zone. I think it's the only one in the biome though.
Nothing juvenile about that one. One fully grown one lives in the BKZ, and two in the Grand Reef.
There are, of course, three juveniles in the lost river, and the three adults in the void.
The ones in the void are 1.15x bigger than normal adults, which is a cute detail.
An adult lives in the blood kelp. He looks a little too far up to the surface.
What do u mean?
a good spot to stay - now get your dagger and kill that motherf*cker
is it just me or are juvenile ghosts kinda chill?
I agree, there not as up tight about you leaving on the lights outside your cyclops
I mean until you're like really loud or just in its aggro zone were fine but the bigger ones just want you dead by default
Ive been searching for it so i can find nickel but i cant find it anywhere
One in the blood kelp and one in the Grand reef. I prefer the one in the blood kelp it’s by the life pod that can be found in the blood kelp.
Thanks
Theres also one in the bulb zone but the blood kelp entrance is the best for nickel
To partially avoid spoilers, I will give advice in the form of riddles.
> Where can you get both reaped and shocked?
> Spheres, Squids, and Seabases
> An open wound that breaks the skin
> Are squids hematophobic?
Hope this helps!
I got the first 3 where is the last
Where do you find crabsquids in a biome with blood?
The entrances to lost river are in both blood kelp zones the deep grand reef and the bulb zone
I once saw a post asking what entrance people usually took to the Lost River, and noticed a lot of people either saying the Blood Kelp Trenches or the open Grand Reef. Me personally, I use the Deep Grand entrance, because as far as I'm aware, no ghost leviathans roam there. It's not an open space, so it's hard to get caught off guard, and a Degasi base is there to be used as a checkpoint if you don't use beacons. Is there a reason people prefer the open Grand more? Edit: I meant Blood Kelp Trench, my question still stands-
Blood kelp entrance is lovely once you kill the ghost leviathan in there
There isn't one in the open grand reef? There's two in the southern bloodkelp, one in the northern bloodkelp, one in the deep grand reef and one between the bulb zone and mountains.
Pretty sure there’s just 2 in the grand reef, one close to the sea treader path and one closer to the lost river entrance
Definitely not the Deep Grand Reef, because in the several times I’ve gone through, all I’ve had to deal with are Crabsquids and Warpers. We may not have the same idea for the Deep Grand
Blood kelp... trench? No need to kill anything there. You'll never be bothered. Now, nbkf? You can also never be bothered, but the route is a bit more specific, so it really depends on where you approach from. >!But, if you are in the nw mushroom forest, or the grassy plateau connected to it, or the underwater islands, you just find the big ridge splitting those biomes apart and follow it to the end. Hole is directly diagonally right and straight down from the end of that ridge.!<
Preference originally was near the last lifepod where I think most of us first find lost river.
Now, it just depends on where I am in the game. After a certain point when I have most of the schematics unlocked, I’m looking for homestead locations and I’m probably not coming back up for air until time to go.
Or…. Until I run out of brain corral.
Tbh, I'm kinda confused by your reference of "open grand reef" being separate from "deep grand reef"? The grand reef and deep grand reef have the same entrance, and it's in the deep grand reef. There's only 4 entrances: dgr, bkt, nbkf, and mc(bulb zone).
When I say Open Grand, I refer to the Grand Reef where the Ghost Leviathans live. Deep Grand refers to where the Degasi base holding the aquarium and a cuddlefish egg is
Ok. Well, there's only one LR entrance there, and it's the deep grand reef just past the degasi base. There is not 2 separate entrances. Edit - well shoot, it feels like you were making a distinction before, but you edited it out.
If this is between dgr and bkt, then it's basically a case of the game expecting you to find the dgr entrance first. Canonically, the expected way you are meant to locate it.
It's my least favorite entrance.
Tbh I've used that as my main entrance a few times and only ever seen it once in a previous run. Latest run it was the only one I used, and I didn't see it at all, and the baby in the entrance there disappeared after I played leviathan rodeo for a bit.
I’ve used the Blood Kelp entrance because if you stick to the left side of the cavern you can avoid dealing with the Ghost and it’s closer to the Giant cove Tree entrance down into the inactive lava zone.
I only use the one under the floating island, because it saves me a beacon
I'm doing my first playthrough of the game and I've explored every lifepod and gotten every tool except for the propulsion cannon and stasis rifle. I know I have to go to the lost river but I'm not sure what to bring and what I should worry about. Thanks :)
Stasis rifle can be found on the main island
I already have the blueprint but don't know where to get the magnetite to make it
Ah, in that case go to one of the safe shallows and look out for a hole in the ground it’ll take you to a forest of pink mushrooms, you can find magnetite there
I recomend bringing a melon farm or ALOT of water, as far as I know theres no source of it down there, also extra Cyclops power crlls
I mean, you don't need the stasis rifle, I didn't even use it until after I'd beaten the game. Propulsion is technically optional but it's convenient for getting your Prawn unstuck and for exploring somewhere else.
So what's in the lost river? Basically everything. Nearly every material is available down there and it is awesome, but you're going to need the Prawn's drill to access most of it. It's also the only biome with nickel, which will eventually be important. Oh, there's also ghost leviathans, so yeah, be ready to dodge those.
As for what to bring? Prawn with a drill at minimum, but it's a lot more convenient if you shuttle it around in a Cyclops. You just need to get that Cyclops past the ghost. A shield generator helps a lot. Sonar isn't needed but it's real nice for the upcoming areas. You'll also want material to do some building, all the stuff down there will need to go in lockers. Once you start going deeper than the lost river, carry that propulsion cannon around, just in case.
I prefer the deep grand reef one, but I take a few buoys as you can get lost trying to find the entrance.
My fave is the one on the left to the life pod under 500 meters in th3e bloodkelp zone
Each Blood Kelp, the Bulb Zone Mountain Border and the Deep Grand Reef
Blood kelp trench
There is an entrance in the northern blood kelp zone, one in the blood kelp trench, one in the deep grand reef and one on the border between the mountains and bulb zone.
I’m replaying the game again and I forgot the ways to the LR.
I find the grand reef one easiest but that's the only entrance I know how to get to so..
The entrance by cto Yu's lifepod(2?). Hug the left wall of the cave and take the waterfall down.
Big hole between bulb zone and mountain biome.
Blood kelp trench.
Head west south west from the safe shallows until you find the blood kelp area. Follow that trench to the western entrance.
I have already spoiled the entire plot line for myself already, but I'm fairly certain I have a ridiculous amount of hours clocked in the game, and so far the furthest progression wise I've gotten is locating every life pod (I'm fairly certain at least), building a couple bases and a seamoth, and locating both islands. I've went through the Sunbeam event and fully explored the quarantine enforcement platform. I know the general direction of the disease research facility and how deep it is, but for the ever loving life of me I cannot find an entrance into the Lost River to get there.
There’s a Blood Kelp zone north-northwest of your life pod, it borders the Dunes and a Mushroom Forest. It has a deep hole that’s bottom leads directly into the Lost River.
There's an entrance very close to the Degassi sea base nearest the Floating Island. Pretty much just find that and then keep going deeper. Other than that, there's always coordinates, since you've already been checking out spoilers. This map is spoiler-licious, but it's also super handy: https://subnauticamap.io/
The underwater seabase or the ones on the floating island?
About 1km north from your life pod, you're in the right spot when you passed a grassy plateau going down to a blood kelp zone. Room enough to get the cyclops thru (though it's a bit tricky to navigate through the "forest" to get deeper). There's also a venting system on a rock peak nearby (entrance is down the left flank, life pod in your back).
There's one directly south of lifepod 2
Underwater. You're always going to be going deep to get to the Lost River. I first found it right after finding the Degassi Seabase while searching for gelsacks.
