What Redditors are Saying

Vehicles in Subnautica

TL;DR Subnautica features several vehicles including the Seamoth, Cyclops, Prawn Suit, and Sea Truck (in Below Zero). Each vehicle serves different purposes such as exploration, resource collection, and transportation.

Seamoth

The Seamoth is a small, fast, and maneuverable submersible that is ideal for exploring the underwater world. It is often praised for its speed and ease of use [2:6][2:7]. Players can upgrade it with various modules to enhance its capabilities, making it a favorite among many players for quick travel and exploration [2:5].

Cyclops

The Cyclops is a large submarine that acts as a mobile base. It offers significant storage space and customization options, allowing players to build inside it and tailor it to their needs [2:11]. While it provides ample room and functionality, some players find its maneuverability challenging compared to smaller vehicles [2:3].

Prawn Suit

The Prawn Suit is a versatile exosuit designed for deep-sea exploration and resource gathering. It is considered one of the most powerful vehicles due to its ability to withstand pressure at great depths and its utility in mining resources [2:4][2:8]. The Prawn Suit can be upgraded with various tools and enhancements, making it indispensable for late-game exploration.

Sea Truck (Below Zero)

In Subnautica: Below Zero, the Sea Truck combines elements of the Seamoth and Cyclops. It allows players to attach compartments for additional storage and functionality [2:1][2:9]. However, it lacks the customization freedom of the Cyclops and suffers from reduced speed and maneuverability when heavily loaded [2:3].

Gameplay Without Vehicles

Some players attempt challenges where they complete the game without using any underwater vehicles, relying on strategies like building mini-bases for air supply or carrying multiple oxygen tanks [5:2][5:4]. This approach requires careful planning and resource management but is possible with creativity and patience [5:10].

ORIGINAL POST

What would you pitch for upcoming games to move around in? I for one would love some kind of big submarine again like the cyclops. Maybe with some small airship as a sidecraft for high above surface locations.

A speedboat. One that can only travel along the top of the water but is ridiculously fast and is great for getting to places if you don’t plan on going deep.

I think it'd be cool to have a boat. Something that can't go beneath the surface, but maybe it has literally everything you need to thrive. It could also have a dock so you could bring some little vehicles like your prawn suit.

Floating foundations could be a thing i think, with the option to tow them around. A normal boat would probably need a pretty big map to be of use.

Why? It's faster than the seamoth, has the same modules as the seamoth, and can have compartments. I answered PRAWN because it's better than all 3 but still.

The sea truck is like if someone combined the sea moth and the cyclops, but only took the bad things. You get the larger space of the cyclops, but without the ability to customize it. You get pretty decent speed, but with the shitty maneuverability of the cyclops, and your speed suffers from too many modules, which also adds on to worse maneuverability. You can dock it like a sea moth, but only if you un-attach the modules and then reatach them later, taking up time.

The cyclops and sea moth have all of these exact things, space, the ability to dock, and speed. But without the downsides

1 upvotes on reddit

NoiceMango · 3 years ago

It's worse than cyclops in my opinion because you can't customize it at all. You're forced to use prefabricated rooms and the only thing you can really customize is color. The cyclops actually gives you the freedom to build in it and customize it how you want.

What types of vehicles are you hoping for in Subnautica 2?

Posted by SlipperySp00der · in r/subnautica · 7 months ago

There’s the classic ones like “a seamoth but better” or “Cyclopes but bigger” but I wanna hear some more creative stuff. Id take a wager that sub 2 is gonna be a good bit bigger than the OG game. So I think it’s fair to have a few more options than one that’s fast, one that’s good for scouting and collecting resources (the prawn), and the CHONKER. It’s alredy been said that bases are getting a whole team focused on them so clearly they want us to have a bit more freedom. And considering that multiplayer is an option, having players being able to choose different vehicles could help spice things up. Like say two vehicles that function similar too the seamoth but say ones a little faster but has higher crush depth and maybe a specialization like maneuverability, while ones a little slower, stronger, and a differing specialization like towing stuff around kinda like the seatruck.

My main one that I think would honestly be genius is a boat type of vehicle. It’s massive and is basically all you need mobile base wise, it’s just hella resource dense and maybe is lacking in some nuances you can only have in your base to keep players from just existing on it. Definitely a late game vehicle too. Maybe it can even carry this games bigger sub and drop it whenever you find a place worth exploring. Like a cyclops for a cyclops. Its catch is it can’t go underwater itself. It’s good bringing a boatload of stuff with you, but you can’t take it down with you, and hoping that this game has some really deep areas, that would be a drawback. Also leaves you a bit open for creature attacks sense it would be a big mama.

Another one that I have less to say is maybe some sort of spider vehicle. Much like the prawn but it can’t jump (well maybe it can but just not too high). It can however climb walls and has mandibles for collecting resources. Having a vehicle bound too the sea floor or walls could be really cool in my eyes

An end game huge submarine with no manual controls, more of a constant moving base that follows a designated path around the whole map, with tiny service bots that go out to get resources and 2+ slots for vehicles (or even 4). This moving hub would be a luxurious end game base and fortress with incredible ever changing views out of the windows so you can enjoy the whole map, kinda like with the cyclops but removing the ‘hassle’ (even if it’s fun sometimes) to drive it around

I would want a sub that's kinda like a mini-Cyclops that still has a bit of space to build inside, but has a scanner that basically works as a portable scanner room, and maybe even have the ability to scan the ocean floor to then map it out on your PDA

11 upvotes on reddit
R
Ragnarok314159 · 7 months ago

I would like something like this and it would have limited capacitor output that can be upgraded.

For instance, you want to run a scanner? Great. You have to put it into low power mode, can’t move, but can recharge (thermal vent type situation). The mapping sonar aid may attract unwanted guests.

There needs to be a trade off on things.

2 upvotes on reddit
rust_tg · 7 months ago

I really like the boat idea. An idea i have for that is that u can shoot a chain/rope down to the seafloor, which both anchors the boat and allows u to quickly descend/ascend back to the boat. And the prawn or prawn equivalent would be able to attach to it. That way u can travel on the surface and then quickly get down to the ocean floor for deep exploration

The rope/chain by default would not be able to deploy at certain depths, but could be upgraded to deploy deeper. That way u dont skip to too late in the game and theres some ability for progression still

And maybe the boat could have a radar module or something so you could actually have a map of the whole area

Are there going to be currents in the new game? I had a random thought in the middle of the night last night: how is the life pod stationary without an anchor.

2 upvotes on reddit
SlipperySp00der · OP · 7 months ago

Oooo I’m torn on that. On the one had it would be so hella fun to use that, but on the other I feel like it would cause less open water exploration. With the boat it’s late game and would probably be pretty slow so more often than not players would use the “seamoth” of the game to get around. I feel like for the type of vehicle that would be it would have to be about middle of the game progression wise. To me it just feels like it would be too good of an option for players to use anything else. Also I’m not too sure how a surfboard would mesh with Subnauticas technology design. Everything is sleek and efficient. I feel a surfboard would stick out a bit. But it is an interesting idea for sure

5 upvotes on reddit
The24thWizard · 7 months ago

Exploration is fun but it would be useful if you want to go from point A to B and you already know the way, especially because what you want is under water so you still need to explore.

1 upvotes on reddit
PsychologicalBig3010 · 7 months ago

Well I didnt mean an actual surfboard but like a thing you stand on that goes really fast. And it would be be used to go above certain areas. Then you just pick it back up and you can dive down. And the boat you suggested could hold stuff on it and even carry a vehicle, but the board would just be a quick exploration thing, when you dont feel the need to take a whole ass boat with you. It'd be faster than the boat (by a decent bit) but you wouldnt be able to carry anything on it

Maybe its niche, but maybe it'll be useful for a thing or two (wouldnt be expensive to craft either, but it would require you to go deep to get its ingredients or something)

1 upvotes on reddit
rust_tg · 7 months ago

Yeah it also gives an equivalent to the depth module v1, v2 etc system that all other vehicles have

1 upvotes on reddit
SlipperySp00der · OP · 7 months ago

I do like that idea a lot. Be a very interesting vehicle. I’m back and fourth with the big enough for a small base though. On one hand it would be hella cool for a mini base to travel like that, on the other I would love some clostriphobia with it being on the smaller side, making you feel a lot less defended when using it

Seems like everyone is recommending Subnautica so I will buy that. Did you play the Below Zero one? I think it's a sequel and it looks good, sorry you seem like you know a lot about the game

OldWorldDesign · 1 month ago

Subnautica Below Zero is a 'sequel lite' spinoff with most of the same equipment and challenges, and slightly cleaned up gameplay mechanics. But the map is smaller. I think it's just as good as the original, but a lot of people didn't like how the map was smaller and to be fair it is much shorter and there's less to do but from my perspective it was more focused.

Was about to recommend Soma, but if you want something to help you calm down that is the opposite direction. Maybe Abzu? Never played it myself but it's about underwater exploration and is more casual but has no subs you control.

If you're new to PC gaming, it might be a pain to set up, but the best submarine game I've ever played is called Sub Culture. It's very old now, late 90s, but it's utterly captivating.

Besides the graphics (which tbh are charming and stylish rather than "bad") it doesn't really feel like a super old game. It's open world and somehow isn't even clunky to play.

It's abandonware, so you can find the .iso online. I haven't been able to find an unpack anywhere, unfortunately, but it's still not super hard to install if you look up instructions on what to do with a .iso file.

Does Proton work on Windows? If so (or if you use Linux) then I strongly recommend you install it and add it to Steam as a "non-Steam game". Proton (Steam's compatibility layer) is somehow far better at handling old Windows games than Windows is.

Anyway, if anyone is interested, I can write a follow-up comment with proper installation instructions for noobs.

[If OP is new to "the internet" as a whole, then I don't necessarily recommend this for them - simply due to the installation hurdles. But I sincerely hope someone reads this and decides to try this game, because it really is awesome and I swear I'm the only mfer who has ever even heard of it. I just wanna spread the love and hope more interest in it helps preserve it.]

Without vehicles

Posted by CaelosCZ · in r/subnautica · 1 year ago

So, about half a year ago, I finished Subnautica for the first time in years. I had been playing it for five years, but never completed it. I tried starting it a few times, but after finishing it, I wasn't really entertained.

However, thanks to this community that keeps reminding me of this game, last night, I started a new game with a certain challenge that occurred to me: Complete Subnautica without any underwater vehicles (except for the rocket, of course). But as I'm playing and having trouble diving deeper than 200 meters, I wonder: Is it even possible to finish Subnautica like this?

All Subnautica speedruns are without vehicles, Seaglide only. You can watch them for inspiration.

If you include Seaglide in the no vehicles rule, it's still possible, just more tedious.

Either way, since you're not making a speedrun, you'll need intermediate bases or just breathing points (AKA external planter with brain corals) scattered around the map, and probably get into habit of always carrying materials for quick recovery base construction (room, hatch, bioreactor, some fuel).

Might try that. My current peak in suicidal curiosity is scanning a Juvenile Ghost in Lost River (drowned literally at the same time my scan completed) and a Warper at 400m below the floating island using nothing but a Seaglide and an extra oxygen tank, dunno if that's enough.

Is it possible to venture into the lava zone without a vehicle and not take constant damage?

2 upvotes on reddit
EntropyPhi · OP · 6 years ago

Scanning the big creatures is a lot easier with a stasis rifle. Lava zone damages you slowly but it's not dramatic, bring a few medkits and it isn't an issue. Having bases on the way to chill out in makes it safer as well.

You don't need to. Two high capacity O2 tanks and a sea-glide will take you from surface through lost river and to the alien themal power thingy. There you can oxygen up and activate the teleporter, and then everything else is a breeze. If you want to you can build a quick base at that big tree thingy, but it really isn't needed with 2x225 seconds of O2.

Completing the game without the Seaglide would be a lot harder.

Some I would actually use, some would just be cause why not. I’m thinking of making a drilling prawn suit with a bunch of storage upgrades and 2 drill arms, a seamoth/prawn (unsure yet) with torpedo and hull upgrades for killing things, and seamoth for transport (things like energy efficiency and maybe the solar upgrade, do you guys think there are any others I should make too? Who needs the seamoth or the cyclops? The prawn? Pff. All you need is the seaglide and.. well.. a lot of bases. It was fun and a little scary at times. I died twice and had to restart, both times fairly early. A reaper very nearly ate me when I got distracted and wandered into the dunes. The sea dragon nearly burned me to death a couple times. 10/10 would recommend if you’re looking for another way to replay the game with a little added challenge. Edit: To clarify- You must build a cyclops for the shield generator - I did this at the end of the run while building the neptune. No vehicles were used at any point.

Probably the best vehicle I've ever driven in a video game. I love the cyclops so fucking much. I always feel so happy when I've built it and really every time I climb into it, make my way to the cockpit and settle into the driver's seat. Wish it had more stations and more stuff to it though. More of a mobile base than it is.

Players have done way harder runs:.

Maybe OP is referencing this guy:

> I've done it with no vehicles, no base building tool and only 1 oxygen tank. And since I didn't want it to be tedious I thought out a route that turned out to be both safe and a really fast way of beating the game, barely over 2 hours

Wow then you must have made a LOT of bases. What do you power them with?

Man I feel like the only one who didn’t love the cyclops. I felt like it was too cumbersome wherever I tried to take it and the batteries drained too fast. I tried to make it my traveling home but it didn’t work. Then I was scared to take it into really dangerous areas because all my hard work would be demolished so I stuck with the moth/suit for the whole game. I was perfectly comfortable in my little seamoth

Ever had to spend 5 minutes travelling back to your base? Never happens with a Cyclops, because it is your base.

As for the batteries, trick is to make a lot of spares. Power cells really aren't that resource intensive. Then keep materials for 3x Power Cell chargers and some power supply (solar, thermal, whatever) and charge up during downtimes.

I was amazed when I re-entered a damaged Cyclops and heard "Welcome aboard Captain. Some systems require attention."

I realize you're just joking.

But for the other clueless idiots out there, no-vehicle runs always allow for building the Cyclops for the shield generator.

What vehicles can you use in subnautica

In Subnautica, you can use the following vehicles:

  1. Seamoth:

    • A small, personal submarine.
    • Capable of diving to depths of 900 meters.
    • Features a sonar upgrade for scanning the environment.
    • Can be equipped with upgrades like depth modules and torpedoes.
  2. Cyclops:

    • A large, mobile submarine that can carry the Seamoth.
    • Can dive to depths of 1,700 meters.
    • Has a power management system and can be upgraded with various modules.
    • Provides a base for storage and crafting.
  3. Prawn Suit:

    • A mech suit designed for deep-sea exploration and resource gathering.
    • Can dive to depths of 1,700 meters.
    • Equipped with powerful arms for mining and combat.
    • Can be upgraded with various modules for enhanced capabilities.
  4. Exosuit (Prawn Suit) Upgrades:

    • Drill Arm: For mining resources.
    • Grappling Arm: For mobility and climbing.
    • Jet Upgrade: For enhanced movement.
  5. Sea Truck (in Below Zero expansion):

    • A modular vehicle that can be customized with various modules.
    • Can be used for transportation and storage.
    • Capable of diving to significant depths.

Key Takeaways:

  • Each vehicle serves different purposes: exploration, resource gathering, and combat.
  • Upgrades are essential for enhancing vehicle capabilities and extending their operational depth.
  • Consider your needs (e.g., exploration vs. resource collection) when choosing a vehicle.

Recommendation: Start with the Seamoth for early exploration due to its speed and maneuverability. As you progress, aim to build the Cyclops for deeper exploration and the Prawn Suit for resource gathering.
