What Redditors are Saying

Who is the Most Powerful Avenger?

TL;DR Scarlet Witch is widely considered the most powerful Avenger in the MCU due to her reality-warping abilities.

Scarlet Witch's Power

Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda Maximoff, is frequently cited as the most powerful Avenger due to her ability to warp reality and her impressive feats against formidable opponents like Thanos [1:1][2:2]. Many commenters highlight her near victory over Thanos in "Avengers: Endgame," where she forced him to resort to bombarding the battlefield with his ship to escape her wrath [1:7][2:5].

Thor's Strength

Thor is often mentioned as a contender for the title of the strongest Avenger. He has demonstrated significant physical prowess, such as nearly killing Thanos in "Avengers: Infinity War" when Thanos had all the Infinity Stones [1:4][2:9]. However, some argue that Thor relies heavily on his weapons, like Stormbreaker, and his power can be inconsistent depending on his emotional state [2:10][3:12].

Captain Marvel's Physical Strength

Captain Marvel, or Carol Danvers, is noted for her incredible physical strength and durability. She was one of the few Avengers who could withstand direct attacks from Thanos, including tanking a headbutt from him during battle [1:8][3:7]. However, her portrayal in the MCU has been criticized for not fully utilizing her potential, leading to debates about her overall impact compared to other Avengers [1:10][1:12].

Other Contenders

Doctor Strange is occasionally mentioned due to his versatility and mastery of magic, although he isn't technically an Avenger [3:1]. The Hulk is traditionally known for his brute strength, but his character development in the MCU has seen him nerfed in various ways, diminishing his standing as the strongest Avenger [2:11][4:2].

Conclusion

While opinions vary, Scarlet Witch emerges as the most powerful Avenger based on her ability to manipulate reality and her notable confrontations with Thanos. Thor and Captain Marvel are strong contenders due to their physical capabilities, but each has limitations that prevent them from surpassing Wanda's unique powers.

Wanda is a reality warper. She also came closer than anyone else to killing Thanos. It's easily her.

Yup, she beats out Carol because of her warping power.  Infinity stone powered heroes all the way.

If Vision wasn’t so cautious trying to figure out the Mind Stone in his head he’d be up there too.

Thor nearly killed him, with thanos actually fleeing. Then thor did eventually kill him, and cap also knocked him down using thors hammer/power, so he's pretty close behind. A lot of his power is physical though and Wanda's isn't so she has a huge advantage there depending on how well thor can use his lightning, but we've seen she can mess with his mind. We also saw what she did to professor x.

No tricks of the mind and pure power/strength alone though thor might take the cake

The only person who tanked a hit from Thanos is Carol. Physically, she is undoubtedly strongest.

Strength vs magic is apples and oranges but considering what Wanda did to the illuminati I'd go with her.

Thor caught Thanos off-guard in Infinity War as said by the directors and then got stomped by him in Endgame though. Also Thanos was not putting up a fight when Thor killed himz

Wanda or Carol

Im not loving that its not Hulk or Thor or Vision. or even Strange.

I can live with it being Wanda. I think theyre playing Carol kind of weird in the MCU. Shes not bad but shes not being given nearly enough material to work with considering how powerful she is. Like...you made her your superman why is she not more present and getting more interesting development?

Just feels like they chickened out of using her more prominently. Im also of the side of the fandom that hates Wandas heel turn in MoM. Even though Olsen acted the crap out of that movie the writing gives me whiplash.

But thats more a greater symptom of the whole MCU. Theyve been in a rush to nowhere since Endgame and idk why.

The problem with Carol is they don’t know how to nerf her. So she basically just fights people, while being fully powered, but for some reason doesn’t always kick their asses. Everyone else has been nerffed (for better or for worse) in some way(s) through out their arc to take them out of a big fight or to explain why they got their asses handed to them.

Hulk: Nerffed a million times either by literally leaving Earth to getting some sort of Hulk ED

Thor: Nerffed by his own self esteem

Vision: Nerffed by taking him out of IW to surgically remove the mind stone

Strange: Nerffed by his ego. Sure he was going easy on Peter in NWH, but I also don’t think he expected Peter to outsmart him so easily.

Wanda: Nerffed by her own self, her own poor decisions, and, in general, poor mental stability

Again, these aren’t all great reasons for why those characters haven’t just mopped the floor with everyone they’ve fought, but they’re all better than Carol. The writers made her powers go from 0-100 in like 5 minutes, and they kept her powers there. She should be bustin up everyone who tries to fight her, but she doesn’t, and there’s not real reason why other than that’s what the story demands

Scarlet Witch was the only one to take on Thanos in a 1v1 and completely wreck his shit, before he bombarded the planet with his ship. She would have easily won otherwise.

But Captain Marvel nearly beat him in a 1v1 till he used the power stone on her and Thor literally stabbed him and could have killed him if he went for the head

By that comparison, Hulk only lost to Thanos because he used the Power stone on him.

Thor was reliant on a weapon and required Thanos to be distracted, Danvers might have beaten him but Wanda owned him. She’s only gotten more powerful since then too.

Bjornen82 · 4 years ago

If you’re referring to the endgame scene, that was without the gauntlet. Thor nearly beat him in infinity war with the gauntlet. I’m sure Wanda is becoming more powerful but as of right now Thor still has her beat.

Thanos nearly killed Thor (and Iron Man and Cap) with no Infinity Stones shortly before Scarlet Witch nearly killed Thanos.

6 upvotes on reddit
StewartS2007 · 4 years ago

Thor literally killed him… and in Infinity War he almost killed him but Thor just wanted revenge instead of actually focusing on the main goal so he wanted Thanos to see he failed before actually killing him but he didn’t go for the head. And that is when Thanos had all of the infinity stones. In Endgame when Scarlet Witch almost killed him, he had no stones.

I think if he didn’t send down the explosions she would’ve won. I think she is more powerful and will be soon.

But you’re talking about killing Thanos, they both could do it, but Thor would be the best bet than current Wanda.

(This is just my opinion and what I know, don’t get mad if you disagree I just thought I should say this.)

I look at this question from a comparative perspective.

In terms of all-rounding/physical strength, Danvers wins.

Strange (though technically he never was an Avenger) has greater versatility, while Wanda does the most damage focused at a single target

For me I see that as an unfair evaluation power level-wise. Because when that happened Thanos had already fought like everyone else including Thor and Scarlet Witch and Carol was fresh into the battle. For me I’d probably say Scarlet Witch is the most powerful.

Wanda might be able to deal more damage than Carol at her full potential, but she's also as vulnerable as any normal human with combat training. A bullet could kill her.

It depends on the continuity.

If it's the current comics, Wanda has everyone dead to rights considering how the recent Darkhold event ended.

With the MCU continuity, it's a toss up between Wanda and Dr Strange.

Depends if we are talking about the strongest they've ever been, as Chthon has always been way lower in scope than Rune King Thor, the current cosmic Iron Man, Starbrand etc.

Also depends if we count outliers, as then you've got House of M Scarlet Witch.

I see a lot of Doctor Strange, Thor, and Scarlet Witch, and some debate about which one is most powerful. while I agree these three could all be worthy of the title, a lot of this discussion is like deciding the most powerful: Rock, paper, or scissors.

23 upvotes on reddit

niccinco · 7 years ago

Thor.

Wanda and Strange are impressive, no doubt, but they're glass cannons. Strange was choked out with a piece of rebar, and Wanda was incapacitated by one of Hawkeye's taser arrows. None of those really stack up to tanking the energy of a neutron star for a few minutes.

Thor has roughly the same destructive output as they do, but he also has the durability to back it up. Hell, put pre-Ragnarok Thor in New York or London and he'd be perfectly capable of killing the Black Order.

Edit: People seem to think that Wanda can destroy all the Stones just because she can destroy the Mind Stone. The movie made it clear that the only reason she was able to do this was because she was connected to it.

66 upvotes on reddit
narcolepticaf · 7 years ago

I think it's a tough decision between Doctor Strange, Thor, and Scarlet Witch.

Doctor Strange was able to fight Thanos by himself for a bit, Thor's new axe cut right through that infinity gauntlet beam before literally stabbing Thanos, and Scarlet Witch has enough power to literally blow up an infinity stone.

Southern_Bad_620 · 3 years ago

He is op even without the axe have you seen Thor ragnarok or in the comics when he doesn’t use any weapon. His weapons don’t give him power they basically make it easier for him to control it that’s why he needs stormbreaker the most powerful weapon ever made because it is the only weapon who can handle the power of Thor.

1 upvotes on reddit
C
Comiccow6 · 7 years ago

I think in terms of overall power goes Strange>Thor>SW. In terms of pure strength though, Thor takes it. Strange is more about trickery than just hitting people.

3 upvotes on reddit
narcolepticaf · 7 years ago

I can hop on this train!! Strange has all sorts of spells and outlets, while Thor and SW are limited to their inherent abilities. In terms of strength, you're absolutely right, Thor wins hands down. SW sure does have potential though (just look at the comics!)

"No, we have to destroy it. I've been giving a good deal of thought to this entity in my head, about its nature. Also, its composition. I think if it were exposed to a sufficiently powerful energy source, something very similar to its own signature, perhaps... its molecular integrity will fail."

Vision clearly refers to a separate power source. Wanda's power is similar or can emulate the stone, but its source is different.

Who is the strongest avenger in the MCU?

Posted by jodlad04 · in r/Avengers · 3 years ago

I think it comes down to the Asgardian God and the celestial. That move Thor does in Ragnarok where he jumps in the air and the lightning strikes the undead skeletons, would probably kill Wanda and Strange since they have human durability.

Captain Marvel can get knocked out by the power stone while Quill was able to utilize it. So that puts him above her power level.

So then there's Thor and Star Lord. But both have insane durability. One could hold an Infinity Stone while the other could tank the power of a star. At that point it probably comes down to who has the better strength in terms of raw power.

Peak versions of the character are being used so Infinity War Thor, GOTG 2 Star Lord, Wandavision Scarlett Witch, No Way Home Doctor Strange (no Time stone allowed since he can just pause time which is too op), Endgame Captain Marvel.

    • Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff): Known for her reality-warping abilities and immense magical powers, especially showcased in "WandaVision" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness."
    • Thor: As a god of thunder, Thor possesses immense strength, durability, and control over lightning, along with his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir.
    • Hulk (Bruce Banner): The Hulk's strength increases with his anger, making him one of the physically strongest Avengers.
    • Doctor Strange: With mastery over the mystic arts, he can manipulate time and reality, making him a formidable force.
  3. Team Dynamics: The effectiveness of an Avenger can also depend on teamwork and strategy. Some characters shine in solo battles, while others excel in collaborative efforts.

Takeaway: While Scarlet Witch is often considered the most powerful Avenger due to her reality-altering abilities, Thor and Hulk also rank highly in terms of raw power. Ultimately, the "most powerful" can depend on the scenario and the specific challenges faced.
