Communication and Connection
One of the standout moments for fans was when Conrad and Belly communicated their feelings openly, agreeing to be friends. This scene was praised for its authenticity and the relief it brought after previous episodes [1]. The subtle communication between them, often through glances and unspoken understanding, is a recurring theme that fans enjoy, especially during tense moments like the kitchen argument
[2].
Romantic Tension and Intimacy
The romantic tension between Belly and Conrad is palpable in several scenes, such as the guest bedroom moment where they communicate with their eyes [2:2]. Their intimate conversations, like those over the phone sharing astronomical fun facts, add depth to their relationship
[3:3]. Fans also cherish the moments when Conrad expresses his deep feelings for Belly, such as when he says, "Belly I don’t think I could ever get over you"
[3:2].
Memorable Scenes and Gestures
Several specific scenes stand out as fan favorites. For instance, the fireplace scene and the Christmas scene are highlighted for their warmth and emotional impact [3:5]
[3:4]. Conrad's gestures, like showing up with wet hair after Belly confesses her love or checking if she's okay after a kiss, demonstrate his caring nature
[4]. These moments capture the tenderness and complexity of their relationship.
Character Dynamics and Development
Conrad's interactions with Belly often bring out the best in both characters. Fans note how Belly seems more vibrant and herself around Conrad compared to other relationships [5:1]. Conrad's adoration for Belly is evident in his smiles and the way he lights up around her, reinforcing the idea that they have a special connection
[5:2]
[5:5].
Overall Impact
The chemistry between Belly and Conrad resonates deeply with viewers, making their moments together some of the most cherished in the series. Whether it's through meaningful conversations, shared looks, or heartfelt declarations, their relationship continues to captivate audiences and evoke strong emotional responses.
Spoliers ahead! To start off: this is probably one of the best episodes all season. It didn't feel out of place or weird unlike some of the previous episodes (cough episode 4 and 5 cough cough). I am SO glad that Laurel came to save the day and ultimately the house. That was very satisfying to watch fall in place. And that scene where conrad and belly actually COMMUNICATED their feelings and agreed to be friends? So good. Not to mention when he said 'what else do I get' to her with the reward system. Oh my lorddddd. And when conrad and jere made up that was great too, finally being mature to say sorry and put all that shit behind them. And steven encouraging conrad to tell belly how he feels just for him to walk in on jere and belly making out... ALSO when belly was like 'I am completely over conrad' to jere, girl no one believes you but we'll pretend like we do. She is literally only getting with you because you're there and she doesn't think she can have conrad. Anywayyy let's see how long that lasts. It is just me or does it just feel.. awkward, like a bit uncomfortable between jere and belly, like they don't have much chemistry or not as much as she has with conrad. I'm looking forward to seeing how their relationship plays out on screen. Of course it's not a tsitp ep without at least one cringey line from skye, this time it was 'i'm team cam cameron'. Overall it was a really good episode, I genuinely enjoyed it. Probably one of the first times I can say that about this season lol.
JER AND BELLY HAVE NO CHEMISTRY I'M SORRY
RIGHT it's feel so forced and awkward between them but with Connie baby it's fun and relaxing to watch.
I love the "I know she knows, she knows I know, we BOTH know" pining stage, like damn this was the peak of their tension and one of their most intimate moments (that includes the guest bedroom scene) like talking with their eyes 🥵🔥
I love that now that he knows, he’s just openly staring at her like 👀 He said he isn’t gonna pretend for her anymore, and he’s not gonna pretend. I also never noticed his mouth dropping open in slide 6 like he’s trying to catch his breath. Belly’s face in Slide 10 is similar. They both look like they’re keeping so much emotion in every time they look at each other. Hopefully they won’t have to soon!
I dont get how Belly can be doing this and still wanted to marry Jere like what
I’m not sure I can ever recall a character in deeper denial. I feel like she just thinks she’s in too deep and now she needs to commit to this life because it would be too embarrassing for her and too hurtful to Jere to turn back now, and too scary to commit to Conrad knowing how heartbroken she felt when it ended the last time. But she’s only 21! Yes, it’s embarrassing, yes it’s hurtful, but not more hurtful for both of you than committing to a life and person you’re not 100% on board with. Even if they did get married, I fully believe it would have ended badly somewhere down the road. I’m glad Belly finally got the courage to admit her feelings before we got to that point.
Honestly, screw Jere for asking to marry her days after she found out about Lacie, and the fault is also on Belly for accepting a proposal with the relationship in such a rocky place. Get back together, maybe, but don’t lock in a life together before figuring out what caused the issue in the first place. Marriage isn’t a bandaid that will fix a troubled relationship. If anything, it’ll probably make it worse.
And their deep breathing in slides 4 & 5 🤭
My roman empire atm is that when people say he is inappropriate for saying he was in love with her 2 days before her wedding, but the whole reason he said it was because HE KNEW SHE LOVED HIM BACK. If she hadn’t acted the way she had around him and she genuinely didn’t want him anymore then he would’ve kept it to himself. He felt selfish wishing that their relationship wouldn’t work out, but when it mattered he gave her the choice he knew she wanted. I am so over this show ruining my life and my views on love😩😩😩
I'm loving their secret glances...aww bonrad💕💕
Me too. Belly needs to get her stuff together
One of their buzziest scenes actually
fr
I don’t have much to contribute besides objectifying him lol because he looks so incredibly good in these clips. I mean he always does but especially here 🥵
It’s killllling me. It’s so embarrassing but I haven’t had a crush on a character like this in YEARS
He literally is delicious!
“Belly I don’t think I could ever get over you” and Kissing outside her house in October
I Loved them talking on the Phone. ". Yes Conraaad" . Belly got way more personality than in the books. And when Conrad said Belly has the most beautiful smile
Yes! Loved their phone calls (and them sharing astronomical fun facts)!
“We’ll figure it out”, “ it’s torture standing in front of you not being able to kiss you” and the whole Christmas scene.
fireplace scene
I have two to start this off
How he shows up to Belly's room the morning of July 5th with wet hair after she drunkenly told him she loves him with wet hair the day before.
During that last scene, how after he initially kisses her he pulls away to check that she's ok to keep GOING. HOLY CRAP his smile when she nods yes.
Just random observations upon my 10th rewatch.
book moment: chapter 16 of It’s Not Summer Without You. (If you haven’t read it and you’re Team Conrad - PLEASE do) series: “go Laurel” I love that he genuinely likes her mom, not just like as an adult he can tolerate, but he likes her as a person!
What happens in that chapter????
It’s all good things in that chapter! I don’t want to spoil it if you plan on reading the books!
It’s in one of the flashbacks when Stephens steals her muffin and then they toss it around the kitchen and when Conrad gets it he gives it back to her. I think that moment shows just how much he really cares about her. When the other boys would pick or tease her he would always be the gentle caring one. (haven’t read the book so I DK if that’s the case there, but that was my observation at least in the flashbacks)
There are a lot of little things in the books that show his feelings. Him doing little things like this go waaaaay back, it’s good when you see it’s not just a recent thing.
his SMILE after belly tells him if she can’t smoke, neither can he. so pure and precious
Does he smoke anymore in the show after that?
literally down badd, the first and second are my favourite. he melts at belly's silliness ("same old belly") and the him getting all shy and giggly about being mistaken as her fiancé 🥹 (can we blame the lady for thinking that, they're so married couple coded lol)
The last one is giving:
THE EXACT SAME SMILE SHE GAVE HIM ALL THOSE YEARS AGO YALL IM UNWELL, they even have the same head tilt.
conrad "whenever I talk to you im just happy" and "you have the prettiest smile I've ever seen, your whole face just lights up" fisher 😭😭😭
Only smiles around Steven laurel and belly 😭
She brings out the best in him. That's why he loves her.
And he brings out the best in Belly. She's a shell of her former self with Jere.
He ADORES her!!!!
I THOUGHT YOU KNEW!!!
FROM THE MOMENT I WAS SMILEY AND SMITTEN AROUND YOU I THOUGHT YOU KNEW!!!
The Summer I Turned Pretty is not a perfect show, but Belly/Conrad is an all-timer ship. I think they'll be one of the ships that this generation of viewers will look back on fondly many years from now like some of the best teen drama ships of all time.
I have to give a lot of credit to the chemistry between Chris and Lola. 💖 The two of them have managed to make Belly and Conrad so beautiful and buzzy. They've created a ship that people root for despite some of the flaws in the story and despite the show leaning too hard on the love triangle. I honestly think that the show isn't being given enough credit for the cultural phenomenon it has become.
Here are ten of my favorite moments throughout the show (so far). 🫶🏻
They look like babies in the first season 🥹❤️
Right?? It really feels like they grew up on our screens and I feel oddly protective of them even though they're fictional 😂😂
Icons. I still can’t believe we got this adaptation and that we were blessed with the two leads having this much chemistry. Truly one in a million
Top 10 fav ships of all time for sure
One of the most realistic lovable MAN I have seen in recent times......total HUSBAND material
I have been saying this for a while now: Conrad Fisher (TV version) is Jenny Han's best male character of all time. Sorry to Peter Kavinsky, he's great, but he doesn't even come close IMO. 🥹
It’s criminal to not have any guest room screenshots in this compilation
I only did 10 moments 🤭 Sorry! There are so many missing from here. 🥹
I forgive you 💓 the ones you did add are amazing
I didn’t really care for them in S1. Their interactions especially in the first two or three episodes were a little...Conrad was really bringing the "dark, broody" energy that I didn't particularly care for. He could be pretty rude to Belly at times and him trying to flirt with her felt weird sometimes. Besides their dance scene and kiss in the last episode, alot of their moments are honestly forgettable.
Them getting together should have been the easiest thing ever. She likes him, he likes her….one could argue that it’s because he believed he wasn’t ready for a relationship but it’s like….you still flirt with her and when she’s trying to move on, you make yourself known again. It’s just too much whiplash. He took Belly on an unnecessary, emotional rollercoaster ride. Anyways, I don’t have too much to say about them in S1. I can kind of see the appeal but it wasn’t enough to move me.
However, I like them a lot more in S2 even with the funeral and prom scene lol. Them actually becoming a couple and having history made some of their scenes make more sense. While in S1, they didn’t really have any history so I didn’t understand where all the angst was coming from. I think the tension was better this season and I can actually see why people would root for them. There is something appealing about 'first love' for a lot of people and them coming back together.
Overall, S2 made me dislike them less but I don't see where people feel they are soulmates or "meant to be". It was a cute first love but that's it. It's a forgettable but unforgettable relationship. Unforgettable in the sense that it was first love with the guy you had the biggest crush on who you thought you'd never get the chance to date. A interesting story to tell. Forgettable in the sense that she's not even 18 yet so she will most likely have way better relationships that'll make first love look like nothing.
Honestly I couldnt see anything good about that relationship because Conrad irks my soul as a person. Like even outside of Belly he is just a horrible brother and wasnt really there for him and I can never get past that. He really need to do better as a brother for me to ever root for him in anything.
Totally! Thank you
Honestly, my hatred of Conrad really taints my ability to tolerate him as part of a pair with Belly (or anyone else). I guess my biggest issue with them as a “couple” is that there’s a whole lot of telling and not much showing where they’re concerned. I have zero buy-in to them because I haven’t really been shown that there’s anything there worth rooting for. The fact that her experience with first love was him just makes me sad more than anything else.
I agree with your ideas of S1 and I can kinda see some moments of sweetness between them in S2. But just saying they’re meant to be and are infinite isn’t enough. Those few cute moments are destroyed for me not just with the prom and funeral scenes, but also because during their whole relationship (and after) Conrad is always too consumed with what’s happening with him. He never really checks in on Belly or seems to ask her or care how’s she doing. The counselor said her grades were bad all year and it was probably because she was up late always with Conrad or worrying about him. It contrasts so much with Jeremiah and her having that relationship where they are always connected and checking in on one another. Jeremiah did more to help her get back on track in just a week with her than Conrad did all year. That’s cuz Jere really knows her and aside from their ESP, he cares to ask questions and make sure she’s happy. I can’t stand how self absorbed Conrad is…. Sure he always acts like it’s for a good reason, but he still pushes people aside, ignores them, and makes them feel like crap.
With all the parallels between S1 and S3, this could lend itself to parallel the book scene where Conrad does briefly take back his beach confession the morning after when Belly reacts poorly.
Justice for Cameron. The only healthy option in the spider web of this whole train wreck 😂
It is interesting, though, that they gave Cam the back story of a sister who died when he was young. That death affected his family greatly. It's part of the reason he and his mother are so close, and it at minimum contributed to his father leaving them. The Cam we see has had time to grieve and heal, making him ready to date and possibly be a good boyfriend to Belly. He's a proto-Conrad, if you will.
Han, forever with the parallels and echoes.
Hahaha I’m rewatching s1 and thinking about how drama free Belly’s life would’ve been if she’d stuck with him
Sweet boy!!
Ugh. I wish she would dump Jere this fast but I’m also here for the drama
Girl me too😭 I saw someone on TikTok say imagine if conrad brings agnes as a +1 for the wedding and she objects
I would be 💯 here for that, but I think Belly is just going to get cold feet at the last minute after Jer confronts her about still having feelings for Conrad at the second to last minute
I’ve never felt so validated 🤣
This just me giggle tho. Because literally. All it takes is an “almost kiss” for her walls to come crashing down for this man.
He was so happy about the moment they had the night before and when Belly texted him good morning. Then he had the conversation with Cleveland on the boat where he basically told Conrad " in my experience you can't be with someone when you aren't in a good place yourself." Conrad goes back home and is cold with Belly because our boy Connie couldn't communicate.
I was thinking, they both are the PERFECT example for “she fell first, he fell harder”.
We have seen Belly in love with Conrad, though we saw the peak of it when she was a teenager. It was sweet :( a little silly at times.
But seeing Conrad in love with Belly is something that is…completely different. I’m not saying it’s something much deeper (love is not a competition) but it’s so beautiful to watch.
I’m so excited to see more of them in the movie!!
Anyone got any recommendations for films/ series with the "she fell first, he fell harder" Belly and Conrad vibes lol ?
I’m yet to watch it, but I think Flipped is that trope
omg loveee Flipped!!
YES I LOVE THAT MOVIE
To all the boys I have loved before? I don't know why but I love the movie and its sequels.
True and the with the drama and love triangle it’s more “She fell first, Jere fell harder, Conrad fell hardest” 🤣🤣
i like to believe that Jere fell because Conrad fell LMAO
Conrad was always attentive to Belly and clearly he noticed her because he liked her, but does anyone know or does the series show the exact moment when Conrad fell in love with her, or was it something he simply noticed and when summer was close he discovered his mother's cancer and changed everything? I wanted to watch the series again to catch details that maybe I didn't catch before, but I'm too lazy for the 2nd season, I only care about Conrad and Belly's flashbacks because otherwise this season is very weak
In the Paris bedroom scene he says that at some point his feelings changed but that was before Susannah’s cancer reoccurred (the summer from season 1) we don’t see this in any explosive scene but key flashbacks show little signs. Him handing her the muffin, him getting junior mint for her.
He just didn’t want to complicate things. I liked the way he explains it to Agnes. It’s like being kinda awake-ish and then suddenly you just are awake!
I think he was just better at hiding it all along!
Right. I think that people forget that she fell first.
agreed!! and she was in love with him for a long fucking time too😭 that’s gotta be rough
There are so many moments throughout this season where I've noticed that Conrad either makes Belly take a deep breath or hold her breath in. I think Lola really made the creative choice of using Belly's breathing as a way of communicating how she's feeling, and it's pretty awesome.
It's like her love for Conrad is this one huge breath that she just refuses to exhale.
Conrad listening to mystery of love on his headphones at the same time Belly has the Christmas flashback with the same song is also a great touch!
Thank you for putting these together. I see so many people saying we need to hear Belly's VO to know that she's thinking of Conrad, but there are so many moments where we see her being affected by him, by his presence, by her thoughts of him, by her memories of him. I can see her fighting it, and I can see her giving in to it in so many of these moments. Any time he's mentioned, she's so NOT normal about it.
Yes. I'm of the thinking that the writers could have been maybe a little more explicit in regard to Belly's love for Conrad.. especially in the first few episodes. They really did take a lot away from the book to play more to the love triangle, which was really disappointing. But there are definitely gems like these that show how her expressions betray her when she's around him. I really gotta credit Lola for it as well. 😊
They literally wrote it in the script !
"I can't even say his name without you making THIS face"
I think this show has more subtext than a lot of audiences can handle these days and that makes me sad.
I agree so much!
She did that in the kitchen after the confession scene as well and then at the lifeguard station with her back to him when he wants to tell her something. She thinks it’ll be a love confession.
Yesss! I think these are both in the compilation video I made 😊
This is a very good video all the awards.
He takes all of our breaths away too
Oh 100% 😭
In the christmas scene, when Belly walks back into the living room she takes a deep breath. And then while Conrad is sitting there, he gets up, takes a deep breath and walks into the room too!! They mirror each other so much and affect each other so much. I'm so excited to watch the season all over again, Lola and Chris have done such an amazing job with only their eyes and expressions and body language.
