TL;DR Totaltech can be cost-effective for frequent Best Buy shoppers who utilize installation services, extended warranties, and price matching. However, recent changes to the program may affect its value.
Cost Savings Through Services
For those planning multiple installations or purchases, Totaltech can offer significant savings. For example, one user saved $280 on Nest products through price matching within the 60-day return period [1:3]. Another noted that fireplace TV mounting costs were reduced by at least $100 with Totaltech
[2:4]. The membership also includes free haul-away of old appliances and protection plans for new purchases
[2:5].
Extended Warranties and Protection Plans
The inclusion of extended warranties is a major draw for many users. Totaltech offers up to two years of protection on covered products, which can be particularly beneficial for expensive electronics [5:4]. However, if the membership lapses, coverage is lost, and reactivation may not be possible
[5:5]. Some users have found alternative solutions, such as homeowners insurance, to cover their devices
[3:4].
Changes to Membership Benefits
Recent changes have affected the perceived value of Totaltech. Free installation services have been removed from the new Best Buy Total plan, though occasional promotions may offer discounts [4:3]
[5:6]. This has led some users to reconsider the membership, especially if they primarily joined for installation benefits
[4:7].
Potential Drawbacks
Some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the program, citing issues with service exclusions and changes without clear communication [3:1]. Additionally, cancelling Totaltech can inadvertently cancel associated services like AppleCare+
[3:3], leading to unexpected gaps in coverage.
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
If you frequently shop at Best Buy and plan to use installation services, Totaltech might still be worth considering despite recent changes. However, if your primary interest is in extended warranties and installation services, it may be wise to explore standalone warranty options or other service providers to ensure comprehensive coverage. Always read the fine print and stay informed about any updates to the membership terms.
Did you take advantage of installations and other Total Tech services, did you get your moneys worth out of it? Comment if u have anything to add, anything u wish u knew before purchasing it.
As if this is going to be even remotely accurate or useful. The type of customer who uses Tt doesn’t even know what Reddit is. This is also a subreddit FOR employees.
Yeah what kinda person is in the Best Buy subreddit, I’d guess about 50% employees
He is trying to defend another post he made about Total Tech being a scam for most individuals, and after being embarrassed in that thread he made this one to try and go "See, told you so"
No I made this to start gathering some data
Took advantage of 60 day return as 60 day price match. Bought a bunch of nest stuff normal price and within 60 days it all eventually went on sale giving me back around $280. So TT paid for itself plus $80. I price match most things within the 60 days and have made back about $500 in price matches because of the 60 day return. That’s my biggest win from this program.
So waiting for a sale on something u bought ok, hey well that’s a benefit
Yeah I mean it takes me all of 10 min to check to see if it’s on sale. Even if it’s like a $10 or $20 difference I’ll do it. Point is it has already paid for itself after the first major purchase. I purchase quite a bit each year so the money I don’t have to spend on protection plans helps a lot. Makes justifying open box purchases that much easier too cause I know I’m getting it cheaper and it’s protected without me having to buy a protection plan directly for it.
Total tech is awesome. Now geek squad gets to help my parents reconnect their printer every other week.
Yes! And reset my dads email on his iPad.
That connected car accommodation back in december was awesome
This is hilarious.
I'm planning to buy a 55in TV from BB and would like it to be wall mounted above my fireplace. Would it be more cost effective to buy a TT subscription or just pay the 1 time wall mounting service?
Edit: Thank you everyone. Looks like TT it is.
Totaltech would be a no-brainer for your situation. It’s straight up cheaper for the installation vs. paying out of pocket instead. Additionally, the TV you buy will get 1 year of protection plan coverage as well.
I know you’re already getting it, but just to chip in as well, if you take advantage of TT, it saves you a ton of money in the long run. Since it launched in October, I’ve saved $500 on products and services.
Tt. Fireplace mounting requires the regular $200 mounting and an add on specialized mounting, which is an extra $100. Tt literally saves you at least $100.
I have Totaltech membership, i plan to replace microwave hood range and gas stove. Do you know if Bestbuy will handle uninstalling old appliances, install new ones purchased from them and haul away the old stuff?
Thank you
As a member you will get free installation on both of those and free haul away. Plus protection for up to 24 months with an active membership
Do i have to uninstall the old appliances and move them out ? Thx
If there are any services involved, generally yes. In your scenario, it should save you money on your day one purchase and any other benefits later are just gravy.
Hello guys I was looking into joining the total tech program that Best Buy offers and was wondering if anyone has any experience good or bad that they would like to share? I recently bought a C2 tell them and not sure if to join total tech or just buy geek squad protection (total tech is cheaper)
I’m a member. You get some discounts here and there but most beneficial to me is AppleCare+ is included on Apple products I buy. Free shipping, delivery + basic setup, and 60-day return window is nice too.
Are you still a member? If so I'm sure you got the notifications regarding bestbuy total tech changing to Best Buy total. I just read the fine print and it seems as though there might be more exclusions with the 2 year extended warranties offered compared to the previous Total Tech program.
Hey, does the AppleCare+ apply to every Apple device we buy through them? Suppose if I’m buying an iPhone and an iPad, would it apply to both? Or maybe if I buy one apple product and my family member also buys an apple product with my membership, would we both still get AppleCare+ since we both have different Apple accounts and devices?
Yes, it does. And yes, you can use different Apple IDs since the subscription is tied to the device Serial Number and paid for by Best Buy.
FYI I just cancelled my Best Buy total care and was not aware that cancelling the membership cancels your AppleCare+. So my $4k macbook is now not covered, and apple will not cover it even though I have no lapse in protection and no claims. Best Buy won't let me reactivate apple care because I'm outside the purchase window, even if I reactivate my membership with them. Best Buy also has a horrible reputation for repairs on apple products so without apple care I don't see it worth doing the best buy membership at all. I would steer clear of this. I am currently looking to see if I can get device coverage through my professional insurance provider.
2023 Macbook - they do not. If you cancel Apple Care, they don't allow you to re-enroll. I was able to get my computer covered under my home-owner's insurance, even if I damage it traveling/not in my home/etc, for like $9 per year, so ended up with a good alternative there. But Apple would not let me get Apple Care, and Best Buy would not let me re-activate it once I cancelled the Total Tech subscription. Was quite annoying initially especially given the computer was approx. $4k.
TOTAL TECH IS A SCAM. Today my phone was stolen and I was told they can't do anything about it at all. That I would have to continue paying a phone I don't have. As well that I would need to purchase a new phone because they can't do anything. I purchased a phone in September, I specifically asked for just protection on the phone. I let the worker know this 3 times and said once that I don't want the membership. As soon as I leave the store. I get an email about a membership. I go back into the store to speak with customer service was told that the membership was a protection plan.... again I specifically stated I didn't want a membership. They told me that it's the best thing because it even covers devices I have at home as well. I would have to renew it every year for $180. I asked what does it cover about the phone. They told me everything. Clearly not everything when I go in today to figure out how to make a claim. I'm told they don't cover lost and theft. Which is ridiculous because if I'm paying $180 for a membership a year it should be covered. Atleast charge a certain price if lost to get a new one like any other company. Not only that it should be told that they don't cover loss or theft. Now I'm stuck paying for a phone that I don't have. Was signed up for a membership that I didn't ask for at all to being with. I can't even use. If I was told they didn't cover lost/theft I wouldn't even have brought that phone to being with. BEWARE OF THESE WORKERS. They love signing people up for memberships and not disclosing certain information. They just want to make a sale.
if I'm paying $180 for a membership a year [theft and loss] should be covered
Or, you know, you could ask. Or read about it yourself (always a good idea).
I didn't ask or approved to be signed up for a membership. I asked for phone protection multiple times.
The geek squad protection I got for 5 years was cheaper than one year of total tech protection and it also covers burn in
Because Total Tech covers the WHOLE store, plus TT also covers burn-in too just not accidental damage on TVs
Not only ia Best Buy TOTAL Tech JOKE ON THE CONSUMERS! I feel it is more like a bait switch. I purchased the total tech program. In June of 2023 Best Buy changed mu plan, They said they sent me an email saying so. O receive a lot of emails daily from Best Buy. I don't have the time to read all the emails and spam I get from theses emails. I canceled mynew so called membership. now they tell me my products purchased under Total Tech is no longer covered.
Bware I personally will not buy any membership offered by Best Buy!
I bought a TV from Best Buy and was planning on buying Total Tech membership to get it installed for free but they said it's not free anymore and it now costs $250 to get it installed. Is this true? Total Tech isn't worth it if this is the case...
That's fine, you and other customers like you didn't make Best Buy any money. Best Buy wants customers that value the 60 day return policy, member exclusive deals (Which seem more numerous than they were when it was just Totaltech), free 2 day shipping, 2 years of BBY protection included, free remote and store support and 20% off diagnostic/troubleshooting. They want people that shop at Best Buy more than once in three years.
You're welcome to think it's not a value to you if you don't care about the other benefits. Best Buy isn't a charity though. The Totaltech plan when it was thought up, was meant to drive revenue in other areas. It wasn't meant to be used for a free install on a product sold for no profit and then canceled. It wasn't meant for unlimited free in-home troubleshooting because people can't be bothered to learn how to restart their computers and turn their printers off and on, or install ink, or remove a paper jam. I'd give these people the benefit of the doubt the first time, but it got annoying when I'd go out to someones house over and over and do nothing other than restart their computer and turn the printer off and on to fix their issue. Yet I was the miracle worker. Because it was free, we were just enabling our clients to abuse the service.
Unfortunately, Best Buy has just reversed course and gone to the opposite extreme. They should have kept the $50 service model. Or 50% off all services.
The free installation services were removed when the plan was changed to My Best Buy Total back in June. It is now slightly cheaper with a whole lot more discounts on products to compensate the loss of services. It also still includes Best Buy Protection on everything you buy, discounts on in-store services, some being free, and the extended price match/return policy.
I just bought a TV with installation discounted to $99. As long as I keep total tech I get a 2 year warranty, right? What happens at the end of 2 years? Can I renew? Would it be a good idea to buy a third party warranty for 4 years while the TV is new?
Yeah there’s a current promo that discounts tv install and mountings down with Total. If you keep Total next year then the warranty continues, however after the second year, you need to opt in to a monthly charge to keep the warranty going.
If you don’t want to mess with that and would like a longer warranty without monthly charges (or the $99 service fee when replacing a TV under warranty) then you can return the included total warranty on the item and purchase a standalone 2 or 5 year protection from Best Buy. I usually opt for this route.
How did you get the discount to $99? I just bought a TV and called to schedule an install (I thought the installs were still free, I didn’t realize the membership changed) and they quoted me $249 for an install. My TV is 75”.
The “whole lot more discounts on products” is completely incorrect. There are hardly any additional discounts now compared to when I had total tech membership
Unfortunately, you're the type of customer that Best Buy didn't want to attract with the membership. The person that only buys the membership to get the free install for the one major item they buy in the 1 visit they make to Best Buy every 3 years.
I mean, attracting people to shop at Best Buy was the very reason they included the free installation in the first place.
That was their intent, but it didn't work out the way they wanted. TBH, if they hadn't included all pc services for free at the last second when testing it, things likely would have gone a lot different.
Best Buy wanted to make a splash, but it backfired.
There are still promotions where you get install discounted and honestly some of the deals you can get on stuff do make it worth it and pays for itself but don’t forget there is Best Buy plus which still gets you the discounts and 60 day return/ exchange/ price match
To fully answer your question, Yes! total TECH still has free installation. Best Buy stopped selling that particular membership when they rolled out Best Buy Total and plus, which does not. That's one of the reasons when I see someone who still has Total Tech I double check on their renewal date, since they will lose that particular perk when it automatically converts to BBY Total.
Which is why I bought totaltech the very last day I could lmao
Hey gang,
I'm a long-standing Total Tech member and was recently informed via email that the program will be introducing new tiers and will now be called Best Buy Total. My main concern is any possible changes to the two-year extended warranties offered on products purchased from Best Buy. This aspect of the program was my primary motivation in investing in the program to begin with as it gives me coverage on any expensive electronic component I buy. I read the fine print, and I couldn't find anything regarding additional exclusions in comparison to the Original Total Tech 2-year warranty, but I would like some feedback from an actual BB employee if the 2-year extended warranty portion of the program has been changed or altered in any way.
Thanks
What is the special pricing for best buy total members? Like if I buy a new 65inch or 75inch tv will best buy total save me money?
Depends there’s usually different tvs in a variety of sizes that have additional total tech discounts that regular bestbuy members aren’t eligible for. If you are looking for a specific model of tv though chances are it won’t have a total tech discount. I run into special pricing with total tech every once in awhile but usually it’s smaller items.
It's the same. Up to 2 years of protection on covered products with the active annual subscription and your existing coverage under Totaltech will continue up to that 2 year maximum after your membership converts to Total at renewal. Service fees still apply for claims made under those plans.
Know this is an old comment but I wanted to clarify something about my total tech changing over to whatever they changed it to.
My question is, I purchased a LG G2 77" OLED TV that was $4k back in December 2022, I bought total tech at the time so they'd deliver and install it for free and that I'd have a two year warranty on the tv.
Do I still have the 2 year warranty? What exactly are the benefits now other than deals that randomly pop up for TT members?
Also, can I purchase a geek squad warranty on that tv now or is it too late? It seems like that would have been the smarter thing to do since I've paid for total tech for two years now, which was over $400 bucks total between the two years.
Appreciate it.
If you renewed your membership in 2023 then you still have coverage until 2 years from the delivery date of the tv, and you will be given the option to move to a monthly plan in month 25.
If you cancelled or lapsed in membership you no longer have protection.
You can not change the type of protection with Best Buy once the return period ends.
You can view your current subscriptions and protection plans by signing into your Best Buy dot com account and going to your profile.
Totally forgot that the free installation wasn't mentioned!. That's a real bummer. I had mine done the beginning of the year and don't intend on buying another TV anytime soon but it was a great benefit. When you say it's removed as an everyday offer do you mean there will be scheduled times when it's available to TT members for free or will the only installation benefit be the 20% off geek squad installations that the membership offers now??
There will be promotional times when My Best Buy Total members may get free installation. They are currently doing it in appliances for the 4th of July sale. We haven’t been told anything else, other than free install offers will be for total members only if/when they occur.
The 20% off is for repairs in the new plan, meaning an out of warranty repair. There is no discount on installation services in the new plan .
The only service included in the new plan is for computer repair at geek squad in store.
I see what your saying but I guess if you buy quite a few things from bestbuy it's nice to have things covered that you normally wouldn't normally spend extra money for a warranty on.
Like you said though after 2 years you're basically on your own unless you want to go monthly. $20.00 less a year and free installations being removed isn't a great trade off imo. That was a huge benefit that seems to be gone now.
Only thing I have covered under TT now that I would actually invest in a warranty for is my A95K tv. I was going to buy an Asus 27 inch oled monitor but it's not available for purchase right now despite being reassured from customer support it was coming soon. Asked again today in the store and still no clue. Might be time to move on lol.
Usually on product release 95% of the time there’s GSP. 5% says vendor says no.
Regardless you still have the same BBYP on the new Total.
Also just out of curiosity what does say a 4 year Geek Squad plan cost for an expensive laptop? Like say a $3,800 blade 16? Just give me a ballpark number if you can. I know the Amazon Asurion 4 year extended warranty for this laptop is $320.00 no deductible either.
Regardless I imagine the GSP is infinitely better. I've never purchased anything through amazon w/ Asurion but I imagine if you needed to use it you would spend many hours in RMA hell.
Browse the product page or put it in your cart and it will offer GSP to you if it is available. You probably have to log out if you're a total tech member.
I have 100 dollars in gift cards, which I can get for $399, or I can pay $499 under Best Buy, but it's covered under my two-year Total Tech membership. Which is the best option?
I vote for best buy and pay with credit card. If something goes wrong and best buy doesn't step up, dispute with credit card. If you bought from Amazon, they mess up and you dispute your credit card, Amazon screws you further, your account + gift card will be gone for good. Plus, best buy has price protection if price drops within 30 days while amazon wont do anything for you.
This. Amazon messed me up and took 200 dollars of another item when I disputed for just one item. I eventually got back at them but felt dirty in the process. However, I had to do that.
Best Buy, you are good to dispute.
Wife got mine for Father's Day on the Amazon $499 deal. It's from the official Lenovo store and came new factory sealed. The two year deal is tempting. Might be worth going Best buy and using your gift cards for accessories. I bought a butterfox case, battery power bank, and low latency gaming earbuds for example when I got mine.
i got from amazon. i will try my best to take good care of it and avoid taking it certain places to avoid breaking but im not thinking about any of that till i have it in my hand lol. but if it is common for your devices to break, would get sometype of protection
I ordered from Amazon the package came sealed but the box was empty so beware. Waiting for replacement coming Wednesday hopefully I get it this time
remember that the 2 years is only if you renew your total tech for 2 years as well
True
I got the news days ago that Elite Plus and Elite are going away in May. It sucks because I've been Elite Plus for a couple of years now, and I preferred buying 4K Blu-rays, video games, and home media equipment at Best Buy. Pre-ordering Blu-rays through BBY is awesome because they usually deliver a few days earlier than Amazon, and I price matched in my return window if prices ever went down.
I was wondering if y'all could help me by answering the questions I have about Totaltech:
Does Totaltech give member pricing for everything or just specific items and/or categories?
Is the member pricing a consistent percentage or does it vary?
Does the member pricing automatically apply for items in my cart when shopping online?
Does member pricing apply to pre-orders, specifically movies and games?
Thank you for any answers y'all can give.
I will also add that sometimes member pricing will pay for the membership itself sometimes too.
for example an item might have a 250$ Totaltech discount. At that point you might as well get the Membership
Don’t support the scam. Fuck total tech and fuck Best Buy for destroying the rewards program.
Came here to say basically this. Don’t reward Best Buy for shitting on their loyal customers. I’ve been Elite Plus for years, even when I was an employee. (Purchases with an employee discount don’t count toward status.) Now I’ll likely look elsewhere for things I used to get at Best Buy, unless I really need the financing for some reason.
Not to mention they screwed up my rewards account last fall that ended up with them giving me a new rewards number and unable to view purchases made before that. Then when a preorder I made a long time ago was about to be released (for a game that was delayed multiple times), I was unable to update my form of payment that had since expired, so I called and got an employee that couldn’t figure it out so lied to me and said the payment was being processed or something like that. (I couldn’t really understand what she was saying.) I got an email a day later that my order was canceled because they payment was not updated.
Best Buy has completely gone to shit since Corie Barry fucked her way to the top.
Seriously. Don't give in to this bullshit. Consumers need to stop. Memberships instead of buying the damn software, nickel and dining for extra hot sauce and guac, and now this bullshit total tech.
1:Member pricing is random, sometimes it can be big times and other times small items
2:Member pricing is random, almost like flash sales that come up for a day and then go away (they usually last longer tho) 3: it should apple automatically if you have total tech 4:I’m not sure about pre orders
It’s member pricing for specific items and categories. Not every item has a member-only price.
Member pricing varies from product to product. Some items have like $100 off while others have like $10 off.
Yes, the member pricing should automatically apply at checkout.
As far as I’m aware, no, pre-orders do not have member-only pricing.
We're looking at replacing our dishwasher and gas range and we've checked out HD lowes and Costco on line. So has anyone bought anything from best buy? We got an email for special financing for 24 months no intrest a possible incentive to shop there.
Deals are to be had on their open-box appliances. You can negotiate the asking price, especially if you open a credit card. YMMV
I had a good experience. Bought on Black Friday, they held in warehouse until my house was completed in March. Geek squad did a decent job hooking washer/dryer and fridge
I have purchased their scratch and dent. But no delivery or installation or haul away there. That freezer has been working fine for 8 years. Dishwasher and dryer have had no issues either.
I worked there and moved to an independent mostly because of installer issues. I'm sure it's a regional issue but the smchicago market sucks for installers.
I recently bought all new appliances. Best Buy had the best price with free install. I asked my locally owned independent business, with their own service techs and installers if they would meet that pricing . They did. My store also offered financing. May be worth a shot checking locally.
So I was at Best Buy yesterday and someone there tried selling me on TotalTech. Claimed I would get access to exclusive deals, protection, etc. When I asked what products are on special with TotalTech and when these specials are, I couldn't get an answer. So it felt like such a roll of the dice that something you may need might be on a special price. Spending $200 a year seemed steep and the employee kept describing it as Amazon Prime but Prime is half the price and gives me streaming services. Can anyone actually demonstrate TotalTechs yearly worth?
Depends. Do you shop at Bestbuy a decent amount? If so, yes. The protection plans and services will make it worth your time.
I do shop there a lot but I think I hit the point where I capped out on tech. I literally have everything in my house maxed out (I got bored during covid. name a category and I have it).
Long story short, I was buying a fridge and I wanted to cover it for 5 years (most modern fridges are notorious for sucking) and was told as long as I paid the subscription my fridge was covered but that wasn't the case. It was going to cost me $324 total after the initial 2 years. Total, the coverage and the total tech over the next 5 years was going to cost me $1324. Meanwhile, competitors 5 year was around $250. So I returned it all and now I'm dealing with that refund process and there's a whole issue with returning TotalTech after 1 day of having it.
Yeah in the case of the fridge I probably wouldn't bother with it, especially if you're already all decked out otherwise. Depending on brand and market you might also have a better option as well. Returning Totaltech should be pretty simple, not sure why they're having an issue.
Here's some examples of previous member pricing promotions:
$200 off unlocked Samsung S21 Ultra or Note 20 Ultra
$100 off M1 Mac Mini
$350 off 65" Sony X85J
$350 off Surface Pro 7 with Type Cover bundle
$150 off M1 MacBook Pro
Misc. Major Appliance discounts ranging from $50 - $650 off
All of those items would come with Best Buy Protection or AppleCare+ as well, and qualify for free setup or in-home installation.
And if you're not happy with one of those items? You have 60 days to return it.
I've saved almost $400 on purchases and been given free protection plans on those items... and I still have 6 months left before my renewal. I'd say 10000% worth it.
The big reasons I signed up are:
Everything else is convenient (though i’ll never be using GS services…if I can’t fix it they sure can’t lol), but those are the 3 biggies for me. I just left the company but my discount hasn’t ended yet so i saved some on it.
Includes 'Best Buy Protection'/AppleCare+... sorry I'm a salty agent about this
I’m confused on that… it includes AppleCare on any item you buy from Apple…?
I mean the other day only totaltech members could buy ps5s online
😂😂😂 customer obsessed
There are exclusive deals and offers. But sales associates will not know all of them in advance. A lot of apple pricing right now. A PS5 drop for TT members recently
Their prices seem decent, but i have a feeling they are older tech with Best Buy inflated pricing, but I could be wrong. Thank you in adavnce!
None of them are good deals at all unfortunately
I kind of figured, more wanted to see which was the best of the 3 worst ones at Best Buy kind of thing. Like I didn't have much faith in any of them, but more wanted to know which was the least worst
Never buy anything from Best Buy imo. If you're spending this kind of cash just get a Costco membership for a year and it'll pay for itself on just the pc.
of the three the first is the only viable choice - never go under 12-16gb of vram for any new computer purchases that are not strict budget builds.
I have a link saved from a different prebuilt post. One is 1500, the other 1200, and the poster said it can run most anything at 1440p, so those were i was looking. I'm mostly just curious. Thank you very much for the information, though!!
glad i saw this cus i just bought the 1099 one and after putting everything into pcpart picker and then looking it up online ima return it
I guess I'm glad to have helped. Hopefully you find something better!
Nope
Yeah i kind of figured that none were really "Great" choices, but like which was the best of the three worst sort of thing. I never really have any faith in Best Buy computers.
