Overview of Benefits
The Best Buy Totaltech membership offers a range of benefits designed to enhance the shopping and service experience for members. Key benefits include product protection on purchases, discounted services like Geek Squad Protection (GSP) and AppleCare+, free installations for certain products, 24/7 tech support, special sale pricing, and extended return policies [1:1]
[2:1]
[3:1]. However, it's important to note that some benefits may require you to purchase items directly from Best Buy to qualify
[1:10].
Installation Services
One of the standout features of the Totaltech membership is its coverage of installation services. Members can get free installations for car audio systems, TVs, and other appliances purchased from Best Buy [1:4]
[1:8]. This benefit can be particularly valuable for those planning multiple installations, as it can save significant costs compared to paying for each service individually.
Member Pricing and Discounts
Totaltech members receive access to exclusive member pricing on select items, which can sometimes cover the cost of the membership itself [4:1]. The discounts vary by product, with some offering substantial savings
[4:6]. However, not all items have member-only pricing, and these deals can appear randomly or during specific sales events
[4:4].
Changes and Limitations
Recent changes to the membership program have removed some benefits, such as free in-home services and installations beyond certain limits [3:1]
[3:6]. While the membership still provides warranties and store labor, some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the changes, noting that the previous version of the membership was more comprehensive
[3:6].
Customer Experience and Perceptions
There are mixed opinions about the Totaltech membership. Some users find it beneficial for frequent buyers or those needing regular tech support and installations [2:2], while others view it as unnecessary or even a scam designed to exploit less tech-savvy customers
[2:5]
[4:5]. Additionally, there have been reports of misleading sales practices and long wait times for tech support
[3:2]
[5:11].
In conclusion, the Totaltech membership can offer significant value for those who frequently purchase electronics and utilize installation services, but potential members should carefully evaluate the benefits against their personal needs and consider any recent changes to the program.
Installs, geek squad in-store and in-home services. Check often for TT only sales. If upgrading multiple phones, it covers GSP and apple care
It doesn’t cover Geek Squad Protection (GSP), but it does (or at least or used to) discount the price of GSP. TotalTech does include Best Buy Protection (BBP) but you must keep TotalTech active and paid for AND it includes services fees that may or may not be covered if you got GSP vs BBP. Same with AppleCare, it (used to, not sure of it still does) discount the cost of AppleCare.
I appreciate you digging into the nuances, I’m still not entirely sure if I understand.
TT does provide apple care+ as an accessory to TT, contingent on your membership and for up to 2 years. I assumed it was the same for the accidental GSP on the phones. It does not include Complete for theft and loss. From my understanding, it’s the same plans, just contingent on your membership.
That’s my current understanding of it.
Edit: you might be conflating the current TT model with the outdated Total Tech Support model that offered discounts instead of including the coverage as an accessory to membership. I could be wrong, but I interact with the plans on a nearly daily basis so wanna make sure I understand it right lol.
Installs
I 2nd this. I got TotalTech to cover the cost of installing my car stereo. It also cover basic setup of say a new TV and soundbar.
Kinda eh for stereos as it's free for anything above 300 bucks
Buy stuff and use geek squad services as much as possible.
It's best advantage is in the Car Audio segment.
You literally get everything installed for free, and you can bring ANY car you own. We're not required to verify if it's your car or not, so long as you're the one bringing it in.
The one catch (now) is that you have to purchase what you're getting installed from us.
Newly rehired BBY employee here! So you say you MUST purchase the car stereo and everything (wiring harness, speakers, headunit, backup camera… EVERYTHING!) DIRECTLY FROM BEST BUY in order to get it installed by Best Buy?
I don't know about must, as there are a few services that require a main product to be attached for the bundle to work. If you have TT, and you plan on continuing it at least for another year, you might as well purchase everything from BBY for the protection.
Barring the TT benefit, I have seen installers do "custom" labor on items bought outside the store. The installer has to see and approve all parts before agreeing to the installation, though.
Also, of course, they can't install anything that put a legal liability on them. For instance, a lot of people have been trying to install those overseas radios that are basically fully unlocked android tablets. Most of them don't have a brake lock, so you could potentially watch videos while driving.
if you want the services to be free (included with tt) otherwise it may not be covered and you’d have to pay labor, just depends
I use mine for my phones. My wife and I get new phones each year and it saves us $40 a year on apple care so that alone makes it worth it.
It can be. If you buy a lot of stuff, turn over stuff regularly, like me with gaming keyboards and mice and headsets and xbox controllers, yes. If you get service work done, like in-store computer care, or in-home installations of home theater equipment or appliances, yes. If you're in here once a year, probably not.
Remember, the whole point of it being a "membership" is to encourage people to be here more and do business with us more. If you're already doing a decent amount, it's pure bonus. If you're not, it's trying to get you there.
Applecare is one element of it, the bigger picture is making a lot or several large purchases like appliances, home theatre for example and you were planning on delivery, installation and set up....then TT pays for itself easily. We give away labor
The advice of TT is still kind of a joke, still long wait times and much of the information provided is often limited & will only make sense to someone who has a level of understanding. I've heard some people sell TT to people who have no clue of what an HDMI or USB port looks like, how wifi works and have no computer literacy at all. It really isn't for them IMO
For your benefit, nah
For my benefit, yes
No not at all it’s a huge con designed to take advantage of people who can’t use google.
It depends. For someone that is planning on having any tvs mounted at all or any gas appliances or a dishwasher or otr microwave it should be an easy choice to say yes. Are you a recurring buyer of apple products where you will be buying a few items this year and don't want to spend as much on applecare? Definitely worth checking the price difference. Do you buy a ton of electronics through us? Those protections can add up quickly. Do you need tech support if something goes wrong with your tech and you can't figure it out yourself? Probably worth it.
Total tech is one of the memberships where you have to evaluate it based on you and what you will get out of it. Give us an idea of what kind of stuff you'd be getting it for and most of us would be willing to help clear up confusion.
Just curious if there's any notable benefits being taken away moving to Best Buy Total that people should be aware of? I couldn't specifically see Best Buy mentioning whats being "removed" or changed, but a quick glance appears to be the same exact benefits.. Just want to make sure.
Guys so maybe I have a bad experience or maybe it's a scam now I bought Bose Headphones about 8 months ago covered by total tech now my headphones aren't working properly so I went to the store and they said I have to pay 49 dollars to send it to the manufacturer so they can see it and go from there those 49 aren't refundable I asked the worker so whats the point of the total tech if I still have to pay for that honestly what's the point if I can just call the manufacturer myself and I wouldn't have to pay 200 for you to tell me i have to pay were is the 24 months covered if you have to go thru that. I called best buy and the guy had the same response and I asked him honestly this is a scam your telling people that they are covered for 24 months and when somethings gets messed up you come here and you have to pay more when you could have just bought the replacement warranty for almost the shipping of 49 and get replacement that same day.
I bought 4 appliances from them with and continued with TotalTech the following year for the 24 months warranty. I ONLY continued for the warranty, I don't shop there anymore. I just tried to get service for one of the appliances. They'll give me a 'discount' on service and parts. Everything costs.
No more free installs (except drive times, free installs for some holidays.) and in home services have been removed as free with purchase. Other than that, it's still warranties, in store labor, 60 day return policy, 2 day shipping with no minimum, 24/7 tech support via phone or computer, special sale pricing, first dibs on some new stuff before the gen public.
But there are 2 tiers and they're both cheaper than what you have now. Also no free antivirus
You don't need their 'free' antivirus. Go somewhere else. This company is a scam.
No more free installation, and free shipping beyond a certain point. You could also get a new or replacement appliance if there was a malfunction or something. Overall the previous membership was amazing almost too good to be true. Now it makes no sense to continue the service with the changes made. I ended up canceling.
Yes
well of course...
I got the news days ago that Elite Plus and Elite are going away in May. It sucks because I've been Elite Plus for a couple of years now, and I preferred buying 4K Blu-rays, video games, and home media equipment at Best Buy. Pre-ordering Blu-rays through BBY is awesome because they usually deliver a few days earlier than Amazon, and I price matched in my return window if prices ever went down.
I was wondering if y'all could help me by answering the questions I have about Totaltech:
Does Totaltech give member pricing for everything or just specific items and/or categories?
Is the member pricing a consistent percentage or does it vary?
Does the member pricing automatically apply for items in my cart when shopping online?
Does member pricing apply to pre-orders, specifically movies and games?
Thank you for any answers y'all can give.
Don’t support the scam. Fuck total tech and fuck Best Buy for destroying the rewards program.
Came here to say basically this. Don’t reward Best Buy for shitting on their loyal customers. I’ve been Elite Plus for years, even when I was an employee. (Purchases with an employee discount don’t count toward status.) Now I’ll likely look elsewhere for things I used to get at Best Buy, unless I really need the financing for some reason.
Not to mention they screwed up my rewards account last fall that ended up with them giving me a new rewards number and unable to view purchases made before that. Then when a preorder I made a long time ago was about to be released (for a game that was delayed multiple times), I was unable to update my form of payment that had since expired, so I called and got an employee that couldn’t figure it out so lied to me and said the payment was being processed or something like that. (I couldn’t really understand what she was saying.) I got an email a day later that my order was canceled because they payment was not updated.
Best Buy has completely gone to shit since Corie Barry fucked her way to the top.
1:Member pricing is random, sometimes it can be big times and other times small items
2:Member pricing is random, almost like flash sales that come up for a day and then go away (they usually last longer tho) 3: it should apple automatically if you have total tech 4:I’m not sure about pre orders
Seriously. Don't give in to this bullshit. Consumers need to stop. Memberships instead of buying the damn software, nickel and dining for extra hot sauce and guac, and now this bullshit total tech.
It’s member pricing for specific items and categories. Not every item has a member-only price.
Member pricing varies from product to product. Some items have like $100 off while others have like $10 off.
Yes, the member pricing should automatically apply at checkout.
As far as I’m aware, no, pre-orders do not have member-only pricing.
I will also add that sometimes member pricing will pay for the membership itself sometimes too.
for example an item might have a 250$ Totaltech discount. At that point you might as well get the Membership
Yes you pay extra $199.99. Yes most if not all of your services are free with purchase. Yes you can call us 24/7/365. Yes you get product protection on purchases made after purchasing total tech. Yes there are more benefits. Also there is this big NO, you do not get priority on appointments, you don’t not get preferential treatment on appointments. You get those appointments for free that is your perk. If I get one more durn customer to say to me “I AM A PREFERRED CUSTOMER” I’m gonna pull my nose hairs out.
You kind of do get special treatment at Geeksquad.
My store literally says that TT walk-ins HAVE to get help, even if it means pushing back Apple appointments.
I don't agree with it, but it's how it is here.
That's nuts. My store all walk ins regardless of TT or not, if you don't have an appointment you will have to wait until an agent has a free moment or set up an appointment. I think if my leadership team tried to push this I would tell them cool learn to do what we do and help them then, but I have appointments.
Can't get memberships on people who already have memberships.
That’s fine for in store but I answer the phone and they don’t get anything but a dedicated phone line.
I was told by the ASM if a customer calls the GS phone number under the same phone number as the one tied in their TT info, they get sent directly to the TT hotline and not the generic GS one.
I work digital sales some days and the amount of customers who make a snarky remark about me not acknowledging them as a total tech member when I answer the phone is ridiculous. Like how am I supposed to know that? Lmao. Even if I did I’m not gonna suck your dick over it
I just signed up for Total Tech and am searching for some threads about it which is how I came across this thread...but what the fuck? People think they're special because they signed up for it? Lmfaoooo what dorks.
Maybe talk to the leaders who have resorted to calling it a "preferred membership" to confuse and weasel customers into purchasing it.
This isn’t really shady? The not talking about auto renew or keeping plans active for protection I agree with when talking about misrepresentation. But this is just different language and doesn’t distort the truth at all. In fact, it’s accurate in terms of console launches and gpus sometimes.
I wish I could. Had that discussion with my sup today. The stores need to be retrained. They are over promised and disappointed when we tell them no!
Been having this fight with my leaders for months. Training all the new people to omit certain information and sometimes blatantly lie to secure memberships. Then when us veterans try to correct the new people, the leaders crack down on us like we’re in the wrong. Even more shady that when customers come back to complain that they were lied to or not told this, instead of correcting the behavior, my leaders brush it off and say “It broke down all the terms on the pad that you signed off on or accepted,” and then said behavior continue.
Customers also don't understand that they're not the only ones with those plans. Their membership isn't any more preferred than the other 4.5 million members also seeking services.
I was at my local BestBuy today asking how much they charge for optimizing my PC, and they said around 150 I believe or I could get totaltech which is $200/yr and I can get optimized for free after that as many times as i want on as many computers I want, they also said if my PC parts get messed up under their hands, they will cover it, my PC is very expensive, and I barely trust myself with it, I just put in my new 3090 ti and they said they can optimize all of it, I feel like its too good to be true, and they said if I buy a new motherboard or anything they can put it in and everything, I don't know if this is true, I feel like it has a catch, does anyone know about totaltech and if it has a catch or not? It seems way too good to be true, can anyone help me out here? Thanks.
u/Nixterzfanz it covers almost any software services done instore, labor for hardware services done instore, slightly reduces the cost of some out-to-service and iPhone repairs, gives a small discount to some items prices around the store, and gives a protection plan for up to 2 years on most things you purchase at Best Buy while you have total tech.
What did Best Buy Totaltech replace? The 2-3 of BestBuy Rewards?
They’d do most hardware/software free of charge with TotalTech. There’s not really a catch. If you have it, your new motherboard will have protection included if anything happens to it. Most Anything you purchase from Best Buy will have a protection plan as long as you renew the membership
With a deductible tho every claim
Yeah GSP better tho you don’t have to pay $200 every year or a deductible and although you “may” have less protection time total tech is still new so no one knows how long a product’s protection should last
Not every claim, depends on what it is and when. I’ve swapped out 3 elite controllers and a set of expensive headphones with no deductive over the last 6 months.
True. But better than buying a whole new one. Or buying GSP and possibly never using it.
(If the new motherboard was purchased at bb)
It’s genuinely a pretty good deal if you regularly need help or make regular purchases.
everything you just said is included, there really isnt a catch. Other benefits include 60 day return period (which would also mean you can price match anything you buy), UP to 24 mo protection on everything you buy in the store ( small deductible fee for claims outside manufacturer warranty, and only if you continue membership after 1st year), a TON of deals that are exclusive for totaltech members that can range anywhere from $5 to thousands, again a bunch of services like pc hardware install, tuneups to optimize pc, free delivery and install on appliances and tvs, and free tech support. It really is a great program if you already want those services.
They sent me an email saying that I will have to renew soon. I’ve only had my products for a year or less. Why do I have to renew?
It says that my plan doesn’t expire until August 2026. I have other products under this membership as well. It also says to extend protection on the LG TV. I’m confused.
Isn't geeksquad included? Should I keep the membership?
I got my first year free and kept it after that because I buy a lot for home and work from BB. Your average Joe might not need it, but having a 2 year warranty by default and 60 days to return things is helpful if you shop a lot there. There are other benefits but I never use them. You have to renew to keep your extended warranties if you have any active.
All protections expire if you cancel. It’s most ideal if you buy a lot of tech but doesn’t make sense if your tech purchases are infrequent imo. There are cool services in addition to it but I’ve never found use for them.
Best Buy Total is a membership that attaches to you. As a member, purchases you make may include up to 24 months of Best Buy Protection.
If you cancel your membership or allow it to lapse, all your Best Buy protection plans expire, and cannot be reinstated.
In-store Geek Squad non-repair Services are included for members.
Geek Squad Protection is a separate warranty purchase. Geek Squad Protection plans are 20% off for members, and are not contingent on you keeping your membership active, as they are a separate purchase, not included with the membership.
Are you talking about in home non-repair services? Those are not included with membership
thanks for the accurate description /u/FemboyGeekSquad
All in a day's work
U have no choice at this point but to keep it for the foreseeable future. If U don't buy a lot of tech every year that shits a scam. Buy the gsp and have what U need covered for up to 5 yrs depending on the item. I don't sell or push that shit. As soon as u cancel it everything U have under it is no longer covered. The gsp is better in my opinion. That service isn't for everyone. That's for techies and resellers.
no one can. that's the point
I’m about to buy an expensive tv and soundbar and I was going to spring for the 2 year protection on the sound bar and the five year for the tv.
But if I sign up for Total I get $200 off and it appears I get two years of protection coverage for each item.
But what about that five year protection for the tv I wanted?
Is it like AppleCare monthly where I’m always covered as long as I continue to pay? If I’m always covered I wonder why the site makes it seem like coverage only lasts two years…
Keep in mind that there will be a deductible of $100 and a claim limit with Best Buy Protection (warranty that comes with membership. There is no deductible with t)3 5 year Geek Squad Protection.
Total is tied to a yearly membership, has a deductible, and only gives a pro-rated amount if it's decided the TV needs to be replaced. Geek Squad protection has no deductible, you keep your coverage even if you quit the membership, and you should receive back what you paid (in a store credit) towards a replacement.
BBYP and GSP fulfillment are the same. A comp SKU is used vs your current TV purchase price and which ever is cheaper is the credit you are provided. Having BBYP or GSP does not make a difference. All in home serviceable appliances and TV's are this way.
The five year gsp seems to be more convenient for you, the membership only covers your tv and sound bar for up to 2 years IF you keep it active. Not to mention it also has a deductible if you go with the membership, so personally it seems you'd be paying more than it's worth.
You can pay monthly per product after the 2 years have passed to continue the protection
Yeah, but even then if you're paying monthly because you still want the protection, might as well splurge on the 5 years at the time of purchase.
The five year plan is best on large items like TV and appliances. The cost is up front and there are no part or labor fees in the 5 years. With total, you will pay a 99 service fee and certain things will cost additional money.
I am a total member because it covers all the smaller things I buy, but I will only buy the 5 years on larger things. Plus with total you get a 20% discount on the GSP.
You only get 2 year of protection through total if you keep total subscription active for 2 years. So you would pay the total subscription twice to get 2 years of protection. Unless you plan to buy other stuff from Best Buy and really take advantage of the total it may not be worth it.
I am searching for a gift for my grandparents who love having the latest tech but sometimes struggle with tech support. I used to be able to help them but now live in a different state. I was considering purchasing a Best Buy Total membership for them to be able to go in and ask questions (e.g. “I’m locked out of my email on my iPad”). Is Best Buy Total the best option for this? Are there alternatives?
I offer a free tech support hotline for seniors and older adults (55+). It's call Seniority Support. If you can't figure out a plan for them, they're welcome to call me anytime.
As for Best Buy total care.. Personally, I don't recommend them. I've heard too many stories from former employees.. The prices are usually ridiculous, many of the staff are less than scrupulous, and booking/keeping appointments seem disorganized. That being said, most of their employees are pretty solid when it boils down to actual tech work..
Can we talk about how it seems like it was just one big scam? so many benefits slowly being stripped away, but when the customers were sold this they were given the full list of benefits.
That plus the whole rewards program being restructured to only reward bb credit card holders makes BB seem like scammers. This is coming from an employee's point of view.
My Sam's Club membership isn't $200 a year and it's actually far more useful. TVs have 2-5 year warranties without paying extra
Fun fact: Every purchase you make with a credit card likely gives you extended warranty
If you have the credit for a decent card like that, you wouldn't even bother with the rewards best buy tries to push. My shit tier credit cards offer a superior cash back option in REAL cash
But you paid $200… lol
Sam’s has 2 tiers for memberships lvls $50 and $110. If total tech was say $50 cheaper I think a lot more people would join but also do something similar like how Sams has combos feature for having card and membership ie extra points.
Best Buy wants to be like Sams club and costco
Just Sam's Club.
Costco cares about its employees.
This was the only reason I still shopped here. First they cut the points in half. Then they took away the ability to bank points. Now no points unless you use their credit card. Bye bYe BB.
Same, the points were basically enough of a perk for putting up with Best Buy's shit as a customer that I was ok with how frustrating it was to shop there regularly.
Now there is literally no benefit over other online stores, I'm not sure how they expect anyone to shell out $200 a year for the "pleasure" of shopping at Best Buy.
Yep I finally got tired of it and went back to Gamestop, of all places. Their Pro membership costs $15 but after one month you get $15 back in reward points. You get a $5 credit every month and every thing you buy gives points back.
TT should not be $200
Does it smell like a bad Q4 around here to anyone else?
