TL;DR
Best Buy Membership Benefits
Best Buy's membership programs, such as Best Buy Plus and Total, offer several benefits. The most notable is the extended return policy, which allows returns up to 60 days instead of the standard 14 days [4:3]. This can be particularly valuable for those who frequently purchase electronics and want flexibility in returning items
[4:5]. However, some customers have reported aggressive sales tactics from employees when promoting these memberships
[4:1],
[4:7].
Amazon Membership Benefits
Amazon offers unique benefits that may appeal to different types of shoppers. For example, purchasing a Kindle directly from Amazon often includes a trial period for Kindle Unlimited [2:1]. Additionally, Amazon's trade-in program allows customers to receive discounts on new purchases by trading in old devices
[2:5]. This program can be leveraged for significant savings, especially during promotions.
Return Policies and Customer Service
Both retailers provide customer service and return policies, but there are differences in convenience. Best Buy is often praised for its straightforward return process, particularly for large items like TVs [3:3],
[3:6]. On the other hand, Amazon has been known for efficient customer service, sometimes refunding items before they are returned
[3:2]. However, returning large items might be easier with Best Buy due to physical store locations
[3:5].
Sales and Employee Incentives
Best Buy employees are encouraged to promote memberships and credit cards as part of the company's business model, though they do not receive direct commission for these sales [5:1]. Instead, bonuses are tied to overall sales performance in certain categories
[5:3]. This emphasis on memberships can lead to pressure from management, affecting the shopping experience
[5:9].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When choosing between Best Buy and Amazon, consider your shopping habits and priorities. If you value extended return policies and warranty services, Best Buy's membership might be beneficial. Conversely, if you prefer digital content perks and trade-in opportunities, Amazon could offer more relevant advantages. Additionally, consider the ease of returning products and customer service experiences when making your decision.
Spending $1500-$3500 a year is not getting anything for free. The cost of those perks were baked into the fact one was spending a ton of money at the store as it is.
you earned the perks with out of store purchase with the visa version of the card... so NO you didn't have to spend 1500-3500 AT Best Buy you just had to spend that much on the BBY credit card...
This! I maintained my elite plus membership for 3 years by using my best buy visa card outside of bestbuy. It was so worth it cause I also had a TON of rewards that I would stack up banking my points
Emphasis on the “a year”. Literally had to spend $3500 EVERY year to maintain elite plus. Spent $25,000 in 2015 but only spent $800 in 2016? Sorry, but you lost your elite plus status. I’d much rather spend an extra $50 the following year to maintain the benefits of an extended return policy.
Best Buy has cycled through an excessive amount of programs in the past couple of years.
Who remembers the Gamers Club? Such a good deal and they just pissed it away.
Yea I think it was like $15 a month or $35 a year. I forgot the pricing since it didn’t last too long.
Clickbait clueless OP is clueless.
Clueless OP? Elaborate
Yes, complaining about having to pay 50 instead of 3500
Best Buy Plus is actually a halfway decent option, especially if you shop relatively often but don’t go over $1500
Hey, guys, quick question! Is there any benefit from buying the kindle direct from Amazon as oppot Best Buy? I have a reward cert from BB that I wanted to use, but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing out on anything from Amazon. TIA!
Think Amazon gives like 3 months of Kindle Unlimited, and I'm not sure if there is any other difference. I got mine from Best Buy simply because I have the warranty program with them and I wasn't going to have to spend money on a warranty like I would if I bought it from Amazon and I think the warranty program with Best Buy is better and last longer.
Ok, good to know. I’ll check to see if I can still get the KU for three months, thanks!
You’re not missing anything and the warranty is still through Amazon.
Great, thanks!
Stackable discounts using the amazon trade in program. For example, you can search local listings on Facebook marketplace for an obsolete amazon product (I found a first generation Echo Dot for $7), then use that to get a 20% trade-in credit with amazon (plus a credit for the device… in my case it was $5). You can stack that discount on top of an Amazon sale price. Which is how I got my scribe for ~40% off during the Mother’s Day promo.
Yes, this is a good point. Also, on Amazon, if you click on "trade in," it will take you through all kinds of previous devices you may have bought that you didn't even realize you could trade in (it offered me a trade in on a couple of mini bluetooth speakers, for example). So might be worth checking it out.
Yeah, the only other thing folks haven't pointed out is you'll have to register it yourself, whereas if you buy from Amazon you can get it pre-linked to your account. So yeah, no differences worth speaking of, really.
I'm a pretty loyal Amazon customer, and not too long ago purchased a 55" TCL Series 6 for a spare room. Now I'm looking to spend more on a nicer and bigger set (Samsung Q80) but for whatever reason I'm now wondering if I should be shopping around not just for prices, but for upsides/downsides of specific retailers when making purchases.
Wondering what folks would suggest when it comes to Amazon vs Best Buy in their purchasing experiences.
minor update: For clarification, either way would be buying online and having it shipped/delivered. Don't have a way to transport that big of a TV myself from a store. Wondering about experiences with returns, warranties, etc, etc.
Honestly, the return process seems like it would be easiest with best buy, but amazon is pretty good. Id just make sure you document and take a couple pictures if you do it with amazon.
Ive had amazon refund money to my account while the item was "still in transit" back to them, like i received the notification a couple hours after i had dropped off the package. These were <$1000 items, but still high dollar.
I dont know how you feel about warranties, but ive heard some good things about people getting the best buy warranty on their tv's. Ive just read a couple stories of "no questions asked" situations where their tvs were replaced with the same or newer model televisions with the geeksquad warranty.
I would be worried about how well a large TV is handled during shipping. It's also much easier to return the TV to BestBuy in case something does happen. Amazon does have great customer service however.
How do you think a TV gets to Best Buy? It's shipped.
The only difference IMO is that if something were to go wrong, it's easier to return it to Best Buy than it is to return it to Amazon.
On the other hand, you may be like me and get lucky and have Amazon send you 2 75" TV's, and even after you try to return them, they just tell you to keep it.
While I know the TV is shipped to get to Best Buy, I prefer to pick up in store because it gives me a chance to physically inspect the box before receiving the TV. I can outright reject it on the spot if it appears damaged and returning is much simpler (although I've never had to).
wow, thats nice and lucky. I would have bought someone a pizza that day just out of feeling like a winner.
I like to buy large purchases like this from Best Buy. If you don't like they have a generous return policy with no restocking fee
When I got my TV from Amazon a couple of years ago I was able to set a delivery window (IIRC it was a 2 hour window).
When the delivery company came they also unboxed the TV and placed it on my entertainment stand, plugged it in, and made sure it turned on.
I have purchased several TVs from Amazon for work. No problems. If you don't have a way to transport the TV, I'd definitely consider Amazon. That said, in the Amazon vs Best Buy argument... I would go with Costco :) Extra warranty (year, or more if you use their Visa card), usually good price, exceptional customer service if you do need to return it, can have it shipped to your door but still have the option of an in-warehouse return.
I wanna hear the good or bad experiences from either having the membership or vice-versa selling it to customers on the daily. Lay it out on me and be brutally honest with it. Give your stories or quick interactions.
I would say it depends on how much you intend to spend at Best Buy. I got it mine just as I was buying all new stuff for a condo I just closed on; full entertainment setup w/Savant universal remote, new fridge, even automated/remote shades (controlled by the Savant app). I consider it worthwhile because I spent all that money on this stuff at Best Buy.
I've also since purchased a new phone and pixel buds, and had the "opportunity" to see what happens when something breaks. One of the pixel buds stopped working, so I scheduled an appointment at a local store to have it looked at. Got there and checked in, and they just asked if I wanted new ones and what style, then handed me the new ones ready to go, took only 5 minutes and no questions asked (except for what color).
For me it's been worth it, I may even renew it in 6 months when it expires.
Good enough to purchase it myself as an employee. I think the 60 day return period is overpowered Lmao it’s 2 good.
Hey this is exactly what I have a question about how much can I abuse this, I'm moving right next to a best buy.
Best Buy plus costs 49.99. U get 60 day return window instead of standard 14 days. U can return anything even if it’s opened within whatever your return window is. If ur non Best Buy plus it’s 14 days if ur plus it’s 60 days. Refunded to original form of payment or can use funds for exchange. Employees literally can’t say no to a return unless it’s outside of return window.
Even on laptops?
Well I felt like I was held hostage yesterday by the Best Buy employee about this membership. I went in and was paying in cash and she proceeded to hound me for an hour into getting it. The whole experience left me pissed off. When she rang up the purchase she went ahead and had the total set at the Best Buy plus membership price (which really didn’t save me much) I debated with her nonstop about it because she was damn intent to not let me make purchase/leave until I signed up. It made the shopping experience miserable.
This just happened to me. The Best Buy person would not let it go even after I repeatedly told them no. They eventually called the Mgr on me. It was beyond infuriating.
It’s good value if you’re gonna use it, it’s a lot like a Sam’s club membership. It’ll only save you money if you were already going to spend it
Literally how I describe it to people. Sam’s Club membership plus some service benefits
As someone who spends a lot on warranties as is at Best Buy it’s been worth is and the 60 day return policy is great I’d pay $50 for alone
You an i know you almost never use your warrenty
It’s a good value for some but definitely not for everyone
I've had a separate employee on each of the last 3 days telling me to get the Best Buy membership vs an actual warranty on an item. The third day I had an indepth discussion about the Membership vs an actual warranty on a certain item. I told them my situation about how I'm not a frequent buyer and my use case and they still kept trying to convince me that 180 for the membership was better then the 2 year warranty at 180.
I'm curious as to what the employees get if they successfully sell a membership.
no, sales advisors do not get commission or bonuses for membership or credit card sales. the only commission i’m aware of is that category advisors for appliances and such get a commission for certain brands.
we’re heavily incentivized to push memberships and credit cards as Best Buy’s business model is based primarily around both of those items.
i will always be honest with people, the Total membership is usually situational and there are some instances where it does make the most sense to sign up for Total, however it’s not always the case.
VPLs get bonuses based on their brand, Category Advisors get bonuses based on how much revenue they sell (in their category and for the whole store), and Designers/Appliance Pros make direct commission off their sales.
This isn’t even true , cat advisors don’t make any bonuses for brands
We do get bonuses, just not commission. It's a quarterly bonus based on brand or category sales performance
oh. my appliance category advisors coworker said he makes commission, but maybe I misheard.
I sell more memberships being honest with people. "I don't think Total is best for you/this. Try out Plus for a year, it's saving you $XX today, and it's about 25% of the cost. if you want Total later, upgrade then."
Employees have a set amount of memberships they need to sell. They do not get any kickbacks or commission off them. It’s mostly to get upper management to get off their butts.
Yeah they get not getting bitched at by their DM/Supervisor.
Best bonus the company can afford...
They’re commissioned on hours. No memberships, don’t expect to be scheduled.
We get the bonus of not getting harassed by our managers.
We don't get harassed by our management. That's our bonus.
Can anyone speak to the culture of Prime video vs other groups at Amazon. Would love to hear from anyone who works/has worked at Prime Video and can speak to the culture, wlb, and how it may be same/different than other groups
I'm curious as well
I’m in prime video. Great org IMO, but it is mostly team dependent. However there isn’t really much scope lately for promotions from what I’ve seen. I have heard of one toxic org though, but from my interactions with the teams I work with it’s great
Which org?
I've recently heard alot about Amazon memberships being a waste due items not really even being delivered in two days like it says and you get free shipping anyway for anything over $35.
I've been wanting to get a Costco membership as I've always loved Costco but curious how the community feels about it. Gotta appreciate a CEO who doesn't raise the price of hotdogs. Most like to squeeze the orange (customers). Costco squeezes the orange (its suppliers) to get better prices and allows them on their shelves from my understanding.
Costco is worth it. It’s also the last of the fun hangouts. Kmart started great. Walmart kicked their ass but Walmart was great. Could spend all day there. Amazon is still convenient at times. I still have Prime. But Costco has that weird vibe when you walk in the door. The concept is weird. There’s just so much stuff. Even Bezos said that Amazon won’t last forever. If Costco stays true it could give Amazon a ride.
Costco is certainly worth it. The price relative to unit size is great compared to most other stores! I have both a Sams and Costco membership for free, so I bounce between whichever has the better price, plus they're down the street from each other.
Costco yes, if you drive a car
I take 4 Zyrtec a day (as directed by my allergist) and the cost savings in their generic Zyrtec 365-pill bottles alone is worth it. My local grocery store’s generic costs 21 cents a pill and up (depending on bottle size), while Costco’s is about 5 cents a pill, or less if it’s on sale.
Interesting convo. Living in France where we have only two Costcos but Amazon Prime is still only 65€/year, it’s a no-brainer that euro for euro, Amazon Prime wins hands down. Plus it includes free same-day shipping on most items.
I have 100 dollars in gift cards, which I can get for $399, or I can pay $499 under Best Buy, but it's covered under my two-year Total Tech membership. Which is the best option?
I vote for best buy and pay with credit card. If something goes wrong and best buy doesn't step up, dispute with credit card. If you bought from Amazon, they mess up and you dispute your credit card, Amazon screws you further, your account + gift card will be gone for good. Plus, best buy has price protection if price drops within 30 days while amazon wont do anything for you.
This. Amazon messed me up and took 200 dollars of another item when I disputed for just one item. I eventually got back at them but felt dirty in the process. However, I had to do that.
Best Buy, you are good to dispute.
Wife got mine for Father's Day on the Amazon $499 deal. It's from the official Lenovo store and came new factory sealed. The two year deal is tempting. Might be worth going Best buy and using your gift cards for accessories. I bought a butterfox case, battery power bank, and low latency gaming earbuds for example when I got mine.
remember that the 2 years is only if you renew your total tech for 2 years as well
True
i got from amazon. i will try my best to take good care of it and avoid taking it certain places to avoid breaking but im not thinking about any of that till i have it in my hand lol. but if it is common for your devices to break, would get sometype of protection
I ordered from Amazon the package came sealed but the box was empty so beware. Waiting for replacement coming Wednesday hopefully I get it this time
Gift cards, tickets, sports, apps, there’s literally discounts and deals for almost everything. I feel like a lot of people forget they have these insane benefits and not utilize them.
Their discount doesn’t really look like a discount and it was hard to navigate them. I tried to browse them before and thought their “discount” is a joke. It almost look like just advertising
I’ve worked a lot of places with “discounts for employees.” They’re all the same that Amazon offers. None are ever a great deal.
Career choice is just as bad.
Then Amazon goes and says “see look at the total compensation!”
What a joke.
Wouldn’t use their car rental discounts for budget. Had to call and tell them to take off the Amazon corp account because I would’ve paid over $1000+ for a rental versus using the regular site and paying 400.
Avis and Budget are basically the same company. Use Amazon's benefit through Avis instead of Budget, the prices always beat every other option for me, and I rent cars a lot.
I got my husband and my daughter pretty decent baseball tickets when their team was here playing for dirt cheap from those benefits. We got like 60% off everything and free parking.
Nothing in there worth a shit, that’s why. There is nothing to “ benefit” us in Amazon benefits lol. They’re never gonna offer anything where people go.” hell yeah that’s awesome”. Never gonna happen. You’ll benefit more by switching your car insurance 😂
The rental car discounts are decent.
Idk I've gotten some pretty sweet deals on concert tickets
damn i'm gonna have to give that a look, i didn't know we had discounted tickets
It looks like I’m speaking for a whole lot of goddamn people… company tool 😂
It's nothing a good Google search couldn't get you. Some of them might even get amazon a commission .
