TL;DR Best Buy generally offers more comprehensive warranties, especially for electronics like TVs, but at a higher cost. Amazon provides more affordable options with third-party providers, but their return policy is often more favorable.
Warranty Coverage and Cost
Best Buy's warranty plans, particularly through Geek Squad, are known for being more comprehensive but also more expensive. For example, a 5-year warranty on a TV can cost around $500 [1:3],
[2:1]. Best Buy warranties often cover specific issues like burn-in for OLED TVs, which many other warranties do not
[1:3],
[2:5]. On the other hand, Amazon typically offers cheaper warranties through third-party providers like Asurion, but these may not be as reliable or comprehensive
[4:1],
[4:2].
Return Policies
Amazon has a more generous return window of 30 days compared to Best Buy's standard 15-day return period [2:1],
[2:4]. This can be advantageous if you need time to evaluate your purchase. Best Buy does offer extended return periods through memberships like My Best Buy Plus, which extends returns to 60 days
[2:7].
Ease of Warranty Claims
Users have reported that making warranty claims with Best Buy is generally easier than with Amazon's third-party providers [2:2],
[4:6]. Best Buy's in-store service allows for direct interaction, which can simplify the process. Amazon's warranty claims are handled online, and while they are straightforward, they rely heavily on third-party providers
[5:1].
Additional Considerations
For products like Kindles, the manufacturer's warranty is honored by Amazon regardless of where the product is purchased [5:1],
[5:2]. This means you can buy from Best Buy and still use Amazon's warranty services. However, Best Buy does not repair Kindles directly, so any warranty claims would go through Amazon
[5:2].
In summary, if comprehensive coverage and ease of claim processing are priorities, Best Buy might be the better choice despite the higher cost. If affordability and return flexibility are more important, Amazon could be preferable, though it involves dealing with third-party warranty providers.
Last time I bought a tv at amazon it disappeared off my porch and I never got it!
wink
Well yes, but actually no.
Have a 5 year best buy warranty for my 65 C9. Cost me an extra 500 bucks but it was worth it as I could never have peace of mind with an OLED without one. Best buy also is the only place that covers burn in.
Whichever is cheaper/faster/with better return policy - whatever your priority is. My 2 cents, stay away from squaretrade, Asurion type warranties if you can. Ask around if GSP from BB is worth it or not. If you like it get the TV and GSP from BB.
Bestbuy
Best buy is better but you'll be paying 300-500 for just the warranty depending on screen size and price.
Pretty sure I’m replacing my x90 that had bad DSE, with a tcl qm8. Still waiting on rtings opinion, but the more I hear, the more it seems like a solid swap. Should I purchase from Amazon with 4 year protection plan for 215, or same price tv at Best Buy’s geek squad is 525 for 5 years. I’ve read different things about warranties, and that they are all pretty much recommended to avoid.
But I’m thinking with the warranty I got through Costco on the x90, I should at least get something for the tcl. But obviously the half price through Amazon is looking tempting. I wish that Costco carried the qm8… or maybe they will??? Anyway what are your thoughts on where I should purchase this tv, and what I should do about warranty?
From what I have read here, BB warranty claim is easier to deal with than other third parties.
Otherwise Amazon has the better return window. If you don't have a membership, is less at Best Buy.
Best Buy has the advantage of price matching until your return period ends.
Gotta love the Military Exchanges. (BX/PX/NEX). 45 day return policy and warranty is as good as the Geek Squad's and 4 years for a $1500-$2000 TV is $200. But most ppl can't shop those lol.
I would be very wary of Amazon warranties or any 3rd party warranties. Store warranties like Best Buy or Costco are good.
BestBuy seems to have a better overall warranty but at a higher cost. The edge for Amazon is their 30 day return policy verses 14 for BestBuy.
Slight correction: Best Buy actually has a standard 15-day return window. Amazon's is still better.
Is there something I’m missing that makes Best Buy’s better than Amazon?
Seems like they both cover basically the same thing. Zero for parts and repairs and what not, not accidental damage. I’m struggling to see why BB warranty is twice as much. Other than I heard they are the only ones that cover burn in, but not looking at oled.
FYI - If you buy the new My Best Buy Plus membership, which is $49, one of the things you get is a 60 day return window.
I'm a pretty loyal Amazon customer, and not too long ago purchased a 55" TCL Series 6 for a spare room. Now I'm looking to spend more on a nicer and bigger set (Samsung Q80) but for whatever reason I'm now wondering if I should be shopping around not just for prices, but for upsides/downsides of specific retailers when making purchases.
Wondering what folks would suggest when it comes to Amazon vs Best Buy in their purchasing experiences.
minor update: For clarification, either way would be buying online and having it shipped/delivered. Don't have a way to transport that big of a TV myself from a store. Wondering about experiences with returns, warranties, etc, etc.
I have purchased several TVs from Amazon for work. No problems. If you don't have a way to transport the TV, I'd definitely consider Amazon. That said, in the Amazon vs Best Buy argument... I would go with Costco :) Extra warranty (year, or more if you use their Visa card), usually good price, exceptional customer service if you do need to return it, can have it shipped to your door but still have the option of an in-warehouse return.
I would be worried about how well a large TV is handled during shipping. It's also much easier to return the TV to BestBuy in case something does happen. Amazon does have great customer service however.
How do you think a TV gets to Best Buy? It's shipped.
The only difference IMO is that if something were to go wrong, it's easier to return it to Best Buy than it is to return it to Amazon.
On the other hand, you may be like me and get lucky and have Amazon send you 2 75" TV's, and even after you try to return them, they just tell you to keep it.
While I know the TV is shipped to get to Best Buy, I prefer to pick up in store because it gives me a chance to physically inspect the box before receiving the TV. I can outright reject it on the spot if it appears damaged and returning is much simpler (although I've never had to).
wow, thats nice and lucky. I would have bought someone a pizza that day just out of feeling like a winner.
When I got my TV from Amazon a couple of years ago I was able to set a delivery window (IIRC it was a 2 hour window).
When the delivery company came they also unboxed the TV and placed it on my entertainment stand, plugged it in, and made sure it turned on.
I like to buy large purchases like this from Best Buy. If you don't like they have a generous return policy with no restocking fee
Honestly, the return process seems like it would be easiest with best buy, but amazon is pretty good. Id just make sure you document and take a couple pictures if you do it with amazon.
Ive had amazon refund money to my account while the item was "still in transit" back to them, like i received the notification a couple hours after i had dropped off the package. These were <$1000 items, but still high dollar.
I dont know how you feel about warranties, but ive heard some good things about people getting the best buy warranty on their tv's. Ive just read a couple stories of "no questions asked" situations where their tvs were replaced with the same or newer model televisions with the geeksquad warranty.

Amazon uses shit third parties for all their warranties or install, avoid
I just buy my electronics with a credit card that extends the warranty an extra year
I ended up finding an open box one at a Best Buy 30 minutes away. That and the 2 year protection was $890 after tax.
These warranty companies all collect more than they pay out. I've saved enough declining them that it's no big deal if something breaks.
Just avoid Hisense.
Best Buy. No question.
Amazon uses Asurion. They do pay out. I got a $1579 X90K fully covered although you don't get the initial cost of insurance back. I got a check within a week or them approving my claim.
That said, the Best Buy warranty is way better.
I believe the warranty is the same whether you purchase a Kindle on Amazon or BestBuy. Does anyone have experience using the standard warranty at either location? Excited to begin my e-reading journey with you all!
Best Buy doesn’t repair Kindles. They may sell an extended warranty for a replacement. For the most part, all warranty is done through Amazon.
Thanks everyone for your replies. I have a small amount left on a gift card to BestBuy so I was leaning toward that route. I suppose it's worth the warranty to go through Amazon. Has anyone had to use the warranty in the 1 year period?
Amazon will still honor the warranty even if you just at Best Buy, although you might need to show the receipt.
I’ve done a warranty replacement and it’s very straightforward. They send you a refurbished device (basically new, at least I’ve never been able to tell her difference) then you have a month to send them back the old device using the prepaid label they give you
Thank you! So Amazon will accept the warranty regardless of where it's purchased ? I'd hope they'd send back a new device if the new device was defective. I'm eyeing the paperwhite signature!
Thank you so much for commenting ! I appreciate it! If its the same warranty (1 year w refurbished replacement) i might as well use the BB gift card. I'm going to get all the protective covers and all that good stuff I've seen recommended on this forum too.
Amazon
Hello Ultra-Wide Diaspora,
Ready to pull the trigger on a G9, just not sure what retailer to go thru. I’m split between Amazon and Best Buy and as prices are the same, the decider will be the warranty.
I know that Best Buy’s Geek Squad is the gold standard, but does anyone have any experience Amazon and Asurion? The Geek Squad warranty doesn’t cover accidental damage while Asurion’s does, but i dont know if Asurion has a reliable reputation or not. Is there any way for Best Buy to cover accidental damage?
I haven't kept up with thing much but why is Geek Squad the gold standard? I just bought the 57" on Amazon but will have to wait 4-6 weeks for it to deliver, versus driving an hour and 15 mins to best buy for one for the same price but only because I didn't have to make the drive and saved $85 using the Amazon Chase VISA. Figured I could wait, no problem. Amazon has a 30-day return policy and Best Buy a 15? Curious what makes it better.
I filed claims on asurion before for small electronic products like a anchor Hub but never a big purchase before like that. It would be a gamble, what they do and what they do for real. Where whereas for geek squad you know if it has a problem you can send it in and get a new one and if it says it doesn't cover accidental damage it would make sense to go for the asurion but like said I don't know how they treat TV TVs, monitors, etc. I don't really don't know so it's a toss-up right there. I am shocked that Best Buy doesn't cover accidental damage if asurion does it makes sense to go for them if you think about it, but I would ask the other people in this Reddit what their advice is before buying from Amazon.
I narrowed down my future purchases to two laptops at a great price as open box items. Best Buy is charging approximately $450 more for a 16" 4090 mini. Does anyone have any experience with Geek Squad and Assurion from Amazon? I plan to buy accidental protection regardless of which option I choose.
I'd reccomend staying away from Assurion. Best Buy seems to be the better option bhere as I hear good things about their add on warranty but TBH, only have experience with Assurion. But TBH again, I hate the idea of having to buy an additional warranty for something I feel like the manufacturer should be covering. But it's the only way to confidently buy a Razer product.
Both are great options because of the return policy. I personally have used best buy for both of my blades and had nothing but great experiences.
Thank you. Yeah I just don’t want to get an Assurion warranty then next thing you know they deny a claim. I would FIRST go with Best Buy but for the price difference I was intrigued by Amazon.
Try and find an open box model on BB. Get your cake and eat it too.
Did you purchase “open box - acceptable”? I bought my Blade 16 and Blade 18 through open box Amazon. The 18 had the worst ips bleed I have ever seen on any system in my whole life…like did they drop it and stomp on it? and the 16’s touchoad broke on start up :)
Open box bestbuy are clean, have never had a problem and I went that route. Good luck for sure!
My open box was excellent. It looked like no one opened it just the box got a little messed up.
I understand that. I have enjoyed Razer due to be able to game and the builds. Knock on wood I had a 15 for two years and a 17 for two years and never any issues but this time I want to be prepared. Especially since I am saving money open box.
I’m not seeing any open box Blade 16’s with a 4090 on Amazon. Do you mean the Omen?
I can’t add the photo but no it’s the Razer I had ordered it an hour ago knowing that I can cancel if I decide not to move forward with it today as they are not shipping due to the holiday. Not yet shipped Delivery Estimate Thursday, September 7, 2023 by 10pm
Razer Blade 16 Gaming Laptop: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090-13th Gen Intel... $2,956.96 Qty: 1 Sold By: Amazon.com Services LLC
And that’s new?? That’s an insane deal if so
Nice! That’s a great deal. Enjoy!
They claim that Amazon is more stable in pricing so even though them and Newegg are both marketplaces, somehow Newegg isn't as good and therefore they wont approve them.
The item Im trying to price match is sold and shipped by Newegg, not a third party seller.
Yeah that's what I thought at first but they will honor online only pricing from all of those stores.
Those stores still have locations lol. I worked right next to an ABT, to be honest it was super nice inside lol. Amazon doesn't, but to not lose to Amazon well known from everyone. It's accepted by corporate. I bet maybe 10 percent of the people shopping at best buy know what Newegg is. They used to match Tigerdirect, which was basically neweggs competition with vast parts with physical stores. Like microcenter basically lol, till CompUSA bought them out. They went to crap and then bankrupt. Same with Frys electronics, i built my first pc with parts from them. They were massive, literally was every store in one.
best Buy stopped price matching New Egg around 2019.
From what I can find, they violated Manufacturer UMRP pricing and that made Best Buy tell them to fuck off.
For the unaware, that's a minimum price for hardware set by the manufacturer. They're also involved with scammy discounts.
If I remember right this was back when Newegg had that price glitch for iPads that Best Buy honored at the time. This was the result
Thats interesting. I wasn't aware of this.
So they discounted too low? Or the low prices were bullshit to try to screw over the other retailers?
This video does a fairly good job at explaining the issue with Newegg and why some are frustrated by them.
I bought a 7800x3d about a month ago and they priced matched NewEgg seems I got lucky
Best buy is ass now. Don’t shop there.
bestbuy told me that they dont price match amazon. only actual physical stores.
They absolutely price match amazon. Just not resellers using amazon; has to be sold BY amazon.
You should fight them on that. If the item is sold and shipped by Amazon then it should be price matched according to their own policy.
Agree with OP you should ask them again. Less than a year ago they price matched Amazon for me (just asked and shared the link wasn't hard), saved about $300 and got the computer about a month faster.
The phone I want is the same price from all three, so I'm wondering if there is a benefit to buying from one retailer or another? It seems that if I need to get the phone fixed/replaced while under warranty, it would be easier to be able to take it into Best Buy, but I'm sure there are other things In not thinking about.
Samsung cuz you get coupons afterwards I think. 3rd party warranty is not fun. I got rejected repair services cuz Samsung denied my service provider as authorized dealership lol.
Thanks. I learned that buying an international phone could be a problem, but I thought the warranty for US phones was the same as long as the phone wasn't refurbished.

I bought it from Samsung because of the better trade-in value, employer discount, and $130 in freebies.
But if you don't have a trade-in, and the price is the same considering everything, then I would go with Best Buy for quick pickup and easier returns. After that, I would consider Amazon because of its amazing customer service, and if you have an Amazon store card, you get 5% back on purchases. My last resort would be Samsung.
If you buy from best buy then you'd only take it back during the return period. After that, any warranty claim goes through samsung
Thank you.
Are you wanting to buy it unlocked then? Since you said Amazon. Carriers have good trade in deals if you're willing to stay with them for 2 to 3 years according to the terms.
Best Buy is offering a 200$ store credit.
Samsung. You will get reward points. I even got buds 3 pro included.
I wouldn't go with Samsung just for the reward points. 1000 points is 1 dollar, not worth it imo.
If the price is same everywhere, atleast you get something back. I got 60-70 usd in points when I ordered the s25u. And I couldnt get it cheaper anywhere else. 1011 dollars for the 1tb jade green and buds 3 pro.
I recently scored a XBox Series X. I was told Best Buy has a 2 yr warranty and the manufacturer is 3 yr.
I hesitate to purchase the $79 coverage (I have until 1/16/22 to purchase) and here’s why,
I recently bought a Vizio tv from Best Buy and one week after it had a screen issue. I had full geek squad plan on the TV but they wouldn’t even listen to the full description of the issue on the phone. Since the TV was so new and still under warranty, I had to contact Vizio direct. All went well and Vizio took care of me. In the case of the TV, 1yr manufacturer warranty, 3yr Best Buy/ geek squad so I was ok with the additional cost.
I hesitate to spend the extra money if I’m going to be defaulted to coverage that is essentially free with original purchase.
Couldn’t get a clear cut answer if geek squad will cover additional things such as physical damage and whatnot. What are your thoughts?
I would have just done a return exchange on the tv since it was within the return period. No point going through the hassle of manufacturer warranty stuff. I don’t believe it covers physical damage but it does cover one controller replacement last I checked
Manufacturer warranties are typically one year. Are you in Canada or something?
Manu won't cover everything, might have to pay a premium for them to fix it, and might be without the console for 6 months while they process your claim.
I don't recommend relying on a 'free warranty' on a product.
You bought a Vizio. You will be using the warranty.
I bought a vizio OLED this year and you can bet I bought that geek squad for it.
A couple of big differences I can point out right away. The main one is that the manufacturer warranty covers parts and labor - factory defects due to material and workmanship. The manufacturer warranty does not cover failures due to regular use and wear. Controller has some button drift, that's covered under warranty; button sticks because someone jammed it a bit too enthusiastically, you're own your own. Overheating is another common one. Overheats during regular use, warranty covers it, overheats because it's gotten too dusty or doesn't have proper airflow, nope. GSP would cover both.
The second is procedure. Manufacturer's warranty very frequently requires you to deal with the manufacturer, they don't usually allow BestBuy to act as their agent for their warranty. Gotta call them and follow their process. GSP, BestBuy owns the process.
For something like that TV, if it's within it's regular return period, it's easier to return and exchange than warranty. We'd be billing the manufacturer for the defective unit anyway.
For an XBox, the plan covers use and wear, but not significant physical damage. Jammed button on the controller from use, yes; smashed controller from pitching it at a wall, no.
