TL;DR
Popular Study Spots
For those looking to study or work remotely, several coffee shops around Harvard Square offer a conducive environment. Tatte is frequently mentioned for its spacious second floor, although it can be quite busy [1:1]
[2:2]. Broadsheet on Kirkland Street is another favorite, known for its excellent espresso and quiet atmosphere
[1:1]
[5:4]. Pavement Coffeehouse offers additional seating upstairs for a quieter experience
[2:3].
Unique Coffee Experiences
If you're seeking unique coffee experiences, Faro and Curio are newer cafes that rotate their bean selections regularly, offering something different each month [5:1]. Simon's up Mass Ave is also recommended for its proximity and quality offerings
[5:1]. Roust, near Flour, serves Broadsheet coffee and provides a quieter atmosphere
[5:9].
Quality Espresso Recommendations
For espresso enthusiasts, Broadsheet and Gracenote are highly recommended. Both cafes emphasize showcasing the quality of their beans through featured espresso drinks [5:8]. George Howell coffee served at Clover is another top choice for high-quality coffee in Massachusetts
[5:2].
Hidden Gems and Local Favorites
While many well-known spots are mentioned, some lesser-known gems include the Barker Center on campus with its charming coffee shop [2:1], and Swissbakers in Allston, which offers a cozy atmosphere and occasional free pastries
[1:3]. Additionally, 1369 is highlighted as a good pick not yet widely mentioned
[5:11].
These recommendations provide a mix of popular, unique, and hidden coffee spots around Harvard, catering to various preferences whether for studying, enjoying a quality brew, or discovering new flavors.
Any recommendations for good coffeeshops with tables, outlets, and wifi in the area? Looking for places to study in!
Just saw this article from syncremote.co about places to work around harvard
https://syncremote.co/blog/best-coffee-shops-to-work-from-around-harvard-square
swissbakers in Allston, near the SEC, is my fav. they close at 2pm BUUUUT the owners are the sweetest and, at the end of the day, will sometimes give out free pastries if they baked too many!! last Friday, I got a chocolate croissant and pretzel!! it doesn't get too busy, which is nice :)
In the square: Tatte and Blue Bottle. Tatte has a second floor that often has room, but in general they're both packed.
Going a little wider, the Peets Coffee by HKS has tables and outlets. Darwins on Putnam (RIP Petsi Pies), Darwins on Cambridge and Broadsheet on Kirkland are also good choices.
My personal favorite: The atrium and cafe in the Fogg museum. Its pretty quiet, the space is stunning, and the espresso is above average for Boston.
My wife and I will be staying near Harvard next week as she has a conference she's attending. I will be working remotely while she's there, and wanted to ask some locals about good locations nearby where I can work. Was thinking coffee shops, but open to any suggestions!
Tatte will be busy but you could maybe snag a table upstairs. LA Burdick's is a coffee/chocolate shop I recently discovered and enjoyed. I would stay away from Blue Bottle or the Starbucks if you're looking to hunker down for work.
Smith Center will be perfect for your needs I think
Yeah, Pavement Coffeehouse is there, and you can go upstairs above Pavement for more quiet seating as well too
Darwin’s and Tatte
Darwin's is gone, but can I interest you in another bank branch?
Darwin’s isn’t gone… is it? Last I checked all 4 of their branches were still open…
There's space in the lobby of the Science Center that you might find suitable.
The Barker Center on campus has a cute lil coffee shop with a great vibe, if you want to hang out on campus
As a broke grad student, the one thing that I can't do away with is a good cup of coffee brewed with real coffee beans (big fan of aeropress btw!). However, the beans that I managed to get my hands on have been pretty unremarkable. Where can I find GOOD coffee beans? If possible, please include both the name of the shop and the type of beans
Recreo in city hall or trek all the way to west Roxbury. They single source from their own farm in Nicaragua and are the best I've had in the city. Plus relatively inexpensive ($14-18/lb)
Barismo, broadsheet, gracenote, and George Howell all have excellent coffee. They roast their beans and they have many types for many uses.
I grab mine from Broadsheet. They do a pretty good job and have a lot of roast profiles to select from. I also use an aeropress :)
I like George Howell beans - you can get them at the GH stores or at Whole Foods.
I like medium roast beans brewed strong & hot
They make light and darker roasts too, single source with tasting notes for each roast
What are some underrated or lesser-known cafés in Cambridge with great ambiance or coffee? Tried most of the well-known spots around Market Square and Mill Road, but I’m looking to explore quieter or hidden gems—especially those ideal for reading or working. Any local favourites you’d recommend?
box cafe on norfolk street. its out of the way and not much to look at but they do banging meze and coffee.
Michaelhouse Cafe, Trinity Street
^^I love this one, their burnt cheesecake is to die for
Yes, love this place
Kanto on Cherry Hinton Road.
Queues were out the door and down the road at the weekend!
Can't believe nobody's said Barbarella in Chesterton yet - hands down the best brownies in Cambridge and a really cute aesthetic
Yes, used to get their cakes as a treat for everyone at work, amazing
But only three tables inside so might not be best for sitting and working
Kerb Kollective @ Cambridge Museum of Technology
Yes! They're great (as is the museum itself).
All answer’s are appreciated! Any excel sheet rankings by any chance? lol
Clover serves George Howell - arguably some of the best coffee you can get in MA.
Pavement in the Smith Campus Center.
Broadsheet for sure; Simon's is up Mass Ave a bit.
Broadsheet, faro, curio, cicada and Simon's are the spots that are closest to Harvard that I would easily recommend.
Broadsheet roasts in Cambridge and is featured at many local cafes (including curio) and their cafe has great espresso drinks and a constantly rotating batch brew which is really fun to try something different with.
Faro was at one point brewing broadsheet, but is now rotating beans every month. This month they are brewing with beans from dayglow and ilse and pour overs from Brandywine. They are a newer cafe but are doing good things and focusing on quality in a busy area. They also get their pastries from la saison, an awesome local bakery.
Simon's brews gracenote which is another favorite local roaster which has cafes across the river in Boston. Simon's is one of the classic local 3rd wave cafes in Cambridge.
Cicada is a great Vietnamese coffee shop that has a location with great vibes and fun Vietnamese influenced espresso drinks.
Curio brews broadsheet and has great liege waffles, a great cozy spot that is in East Cambridge, but can be worth a trip.
3 little figs is in Somerville and a little awkward to get to, but is great and brews tandem which is a roaster out of Portland, ME.
Barismo is another local roaster that is good, but not at the same level as broadsheet and gracenote for the variety they roast.
There are a bunch of other cafes/bakery's that have amazing baked goods, but this list is mostly focusing on coffee spots.
Barismo is another local roaster that is good, but not at the same level as broadsheet and gracenote for the variety they roast.
For a pourover, Barismo coffee is the best in Cambridge, even though the quality has declined noticeably in the past year or so. There food quality is also a notch above the rest. That said, variety is not a strength of either menu (food or coffee)--and it it's not cheap.
Thanks for the awesome answer. Out of curiosity: who would you say has the best espresso?
I don't usually get espresso on its own, but gracenote and broadsheet would both probably would be my picks. They both have a featured espresso which leads me to believe they care a lot about showing off their quality and I have had cortados at both and they were great.
I’d say Faro or Broadstreet at the moment.
Just pin this comment… no need to ever write up the Cambridge coffee scene again!
Unfortunately Harvard Square isn’t very friendly to local businesses these days. Flour (Mt. Auburn) street is a great local chain of bakeries with coffee. Broadsheet Coffee Roasters on Kirkland Street, is a true local shop. They’re a bit of a walk from the square just down the street from Memorial Hall, past the Divinity school.
I love the food at flour but their coffee is mediocre at best. Roust, down the street from flour is much better for coffee. Flour is my go to for breakfast sandwiches.
Check out Roust. It’s very close to the square and quite new. They serve broadsheet coffee (local roaster) and have a pleasant atmosphere that’s quieter than more of the other things around.
Haven't seen it here yet, but 1369 is a good pick too!
Had no idea. More info on that please?
Looking for any recs! 😊 a sit-down place, not just grab and go
Best coffee in Boston but not a sit down.
Phin Coffee House near South Station is good!
Seconding this!! Incredible coffee AND they are so kind.
Love this place, I've mostly gotten orders to go but their seating area is fairly spacious and really nice, and at least every time I've been it hasn't been too full
Amazing amazing! Never fails.
I love Farmer's Horse in the South End
The patio is nice
Correct, unless you count the HSP location but that's not very cozy at all. GREAT coffee though.
Glasser Coffee Co in Oak Square is awesome!
Specifically the South End one.. Great memories in that glass ceiling atrium grinding on work or just daydreaming
Render closed?!
I loved Render.
Hi!! My partner and I have been living here for a few months, and can not seem to find a coffee place he actually likes. He drinks mostly lattes! He is a loser for lavender type of lattes, that are sweet and is nostalgic for his hometown coffee shop that he swears is the best.
We have tried coffee shops on and off campus, and some of them have been actively nasty and others just burnt and not worth a $13 total, even with the cold pastry. We really just want a small business coffee shop that taste good, we can become regulars at, and study at.
Ones we (well, mostly he) have tried and did not like the most (no hate to any of these shops at all): Mad Goat Coffee and Literary: Both of these are actually the best I have had since moving here! But, also had some drinks where I felt I was just trying to power through finishing them, than actually enjoying them. Avionics Espresso Royale Also been to like campus coffee shops, library coffee shops, food-focused cafes, things like that. None have really been good enough to actually enjoy the drink much or to want to go back.
I genuinely don't know if maybe he is just a hater instead of a snob, or if we have just been trying the wrong coffee shops. And pretty much all these places had nice vibes, and we love the Literary! But, can anyone let us in on the secretly best coffee shops in Urbana-Champaign (not necessarily on campus)? There are TONS of them here, and everyones taste is different, so the list may be long. We just need some genuinely good options, in hopes of finding the coffee shop.
I hope I don't incite a coffee war, any help would be super appreciated!!!
Paradiso
Paradiso was a win thank you!! We both really enjoyed our coffees from there! The atmosphere is also really nice and homey :]]
That was my thought! Cafe Paradise has some amazing coffee.
honestly, I think mad goat is pretty solid. elm city is second place for coffee but better for studying. is yummy future any good?
Genuinely not trying to throw shade, but I think your BF may just be a bit of a hater haha.
Mad Goat is genuinely pretty dang good coffee. Columbia Street Roastery which is an old school roaster in town just opened their first café at The Yard on Broadway. That may be worth a shot, though idk what blend(s) they use at the Cafe. They admittedly have some god awful flavored coffees, but their single origin and unflavored blends are pretty good imo
You mentioned he liked sweet lavender lattes, do you/does he know if his favorite place used like a flavored coffee or something? Does his coffee shop back home ship coffee? He could maybe get some in the mail or something that may get him close.
He could also email his old cafe and explain the situation and see if they're willing to let him know what they use for their lavender latte that he can try to recreate at home. I've done it to a few of my old favorite BBQ places from Austin when trying to mimic them and have never had anyone turn me away!
Avionics is good. The wife likes the lattes at art mart
Mad Goat.
Columbia street has the best local roast. They are opening a cafe.
she already said her partner didn’t think mad goat was that good. she’s asking about others besides the one she listed. i don’t think people are reading the whole post before ordering
They definitely arent. Why read when I can type. Bonus points if I have no idea about the subject. Maybe an unhelpful joke or something derogatory about a marginalized group. Why am I so lonely?

This place feels like a warm hug on a chilly day.
Their chai latte is pure magic (honestly, it might be the best in all of California!), the prices are incredibly kind, and the cozy atmosphere makes you feel right at home. ☕😊
This place has hands down the best and most unique chai latte I've ever had. And I almost always order chai in every cafe I go to. Also really cool decorations and vibes. I really recommend it.
This place is absolutely a gem 💎
Location: DTLA
Bohemian House of Espresso + Chai https://g.co/kgs/CaCAMnS

Hey everyone, I just wanted to know what you personally think is the best coffee place on or around campus. I’ve been going to the same one and been looking for a change of pace.
vienna has a great crowd of regulars, i live right above it and have met many amazing and interesting people there. great coffee selection and even better taste
greyhouse is a nonprofit affiliated with campus house, had a guy from there tell me i should try conversion therapy so i generally try to avoid. super over priced too for the honestly small drink sizes. coffee is alright
copper moon in the hivine building has amazing staff but has terrible hours for the summer. judging from last year they will probably be open for longer the school year. coffee is great here too. cant really speak for the other coppermoons around here.
leaps in the union has alright coffee but its also incredibly over priced seeing that its in pmu hotel and affiliated with aramark. really only go there when my friend is working to get free drinks lol
theres a starbucks on 3rd street and in MSEE and theyre about what you would expect
Lavazza in Marriott hall knows what they are doing
Highly recommend Vienna. It’s right behind Greyhouse and I think it’s better
Didn't try it a lot, but their rotating brews never disappointed
Vienna
Sometimes earhart bathroom gives free coffees
