New to switch

Posted by northerndonutman · in r/Switch · 16 days ago

Hey r/Switch, I just got my hands on a brand new Nintendo Switch, and I'm beyond hyped to jump in! It's been a minute since I've been in the Nintendo world my last console was a 3DS that was basically just for Pokémon. My main gaming has been on the Xbox Series X, so this is a totally different scene for me. Since I missed out on the first two Switches, everything about this is new.

I've heard all about the big names like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, but the library is huge and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by all the amazing reviews

. I'm down for pretty much anything single player adventures, party games, RPGs, indies, you name it. So, for all you seasoned Switch players, what should I check out first?

I got my Switch 2 yesterday after years of Xbox/PS gaming (my last Nintendo console was the Gamecube and what swung it for me was the Gamecube games on the Online service). But God yes, those bloody A and B buttons! 🤣

1 upvotes on reddit
No_Perspective_8818 · 14 days ago

Hey, I feel you on the A/B button swap 😂 Coming from Xbox/PS it feels totally backwards. If you’re into the GameCube layout though, you might want to check out the NYXI Wizard controller. It’s basically a modern wireless pad but keeps that classic GameCube button layout, so it feels super natural for Smash or any of the retro stuff on the Online service. Been a lifesaver for me switching back to Nintendo!

I will give you live hack to save a lot of money. If you don't want to have physical version try this. Before buying a new game, check it on website Deku Deals. It shows you when a game was last on sale and how much it cost then and now. This sales are based on official nintendo shop, so you will not buy it from someone else. Some games are so much cheaper in sale even 90% if you buying some older games. Hope it helps!

Hi everyone, I'm someone who never owned a Switch, but is looking forward to buying the Switch 2. I already know I'll get Mario Kart World, but I'm wondering what other games should I buy? I don't want to get bored of Mario Kart and have nothing to do, so I'm just looking for a few recommendations.

Mario Odyssey And Zelda breath of the wild are must-haves.

I also would recommend Mario Maker 2, Metroid dread has a demo and I highly recommend it. And Kirby and the forgotten land is also really good.

  • Breath of the wild is a great open world game that takes a while to get through.

  • Super Mario bros. Wonder is a fantastic 2d platformer

  • There are a ton of great low prices indie games on the eshop

  • Super Mario party jamboree is great fun with friends

Breath of the Wild. Play it first and if you like it (you will) get Tears of the Kingdom sometime after. Definitely get the Switch 2 upgrades for them but if you can find a discounted copy of the game for the original Switch and then buy the upgrade pack it will work out cheaper.

Bro play both Zeldas with the upgrades. If I could experience any game for the first time again it would be both of them. They are truly incredible.

First and foremost, don’t limit yourself to just Switch 2 games. There are dozens upon dozens of brilliant games for the OG Switch. Sure, they won’t look as good, but if you’re anything like me, gameplay is significantly more important than just shiny visuals.

There’s the Luigi’s Mansion games, Xenoblade(s), Donkey Kong Country/Tropical Freeze, several good to amazing Zelda games, a couple of must play Metroid games, several excellent Mario games, and many more. And that’s before we even touch on the indies and third party games.

Haven't had a nintendo console since my gamecube broke.
I'm looking for some fun exclusive games. Obviously I'm buying all the zelda ganes and smash bros. But if there's anything I'm missing I would love to hear it. Note that if the game is on other consoles then I'm not worried about it. Just looking for those gems

Here are some I’ve enjoyed:

  • Super Mario Wonder
  • Luigi’s Mansion 3
  • Super Mario RPG
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Animal Crossing New Horizons

Some that I own, in my backlog that I am looking forward to playing:

  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  • Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
  • Super Mario 3D All-Stars

Games that I’ve seen others praise that I either don’t own or own and haven’t fallen in love with:

  • Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
  • Pokemon Legends: Arceus
  • Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
  • Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
  • Metroid Prime Remastered
  • Metroid Dread
  • Pikmin (the entire franchise)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles (the entire franchise)
  • Fire Emblem (the entire franchise)
  • Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
  • Super Mario World 3D + Bowsers Fury

Left out Smash/Zelda since you mentioned those were ones on your list already.

Congrats on the purchase!

Kirby forgotten land is great! Also love Metroid dread and none on this list are bad

3d all stars sucks because I’m pretty sure it’s expensive to get since it’s out of print and no longer sold digitally. Great game collection though if you can get it at a reasonable price

I’m really looking forward to playing Kirby after checking out the demo!

And I got lucky with 3D All Stars as I found a copy while in Japan for ~$40, but yes it is expensive state side.

I’m going to add 2 to the list.

Pokémon Snap and Splatoon. Outside of a few on this list, those eat up so much time. Side order for Splatoon 3 is rather addictive if you like spite games. The community is still active, so you won’t have trouble hopping in.

The various Mario games are always good, both the new ones and the re-releases from the previous consoles. Mario Kart, Mario Maker 2, there's a 3D pack that has SM 64/SM Sunshine/SM Galaxy on the one cartridge.

Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Ghostbusters

The NES and SNES virtual consoles provided with Nintendo Online.

Those are the main ones I play on mine.

I recently bought a nintendo switch, which should be delivered tomorrow together with Pokemon. I already know I am going to buy SuperSmash, but I am looking for a few other games to play. I like playing games such as spiderman(I also own a PS4), GoW, so more like long singleplayer games with a good story. But I also like to play games such as overwatch. Now I am looking for some games to play with or without friends and was hoping you guys got some nice recommendations.

You’ll probably see this a hundred times, but Breath of the Wild is an obvious choice. It’s widely considered one of, if not the best, Switch game ever. I’m very biased to Pokemon as a whole, and I think every Pokemon switch title was fun, but my favorite was Scarlet/Violet (as well as Arceus but you already have that).

I don’t think it’s a problem if you go ahead and play it. If you’re super concerned about getting the entire story, I’d play BOTW first, but if you’re just wanting to play a super fun game and don’t care a whole lot about the story, go ahead with TOTK.

Breath of the wild for sure

Story of Seasons if you are into Harvest Moon

A Mario game. Odyssey is super fun, 3d world is more like the SNES games, and comes with Bowser's fury too, which I haven't checked out much yet but looks fun so far. I honestly really enjoyed Paper Mario even.

If you're into RPGs maybe The Witcher or Skyrim.

Lots more than this are should buys, but this will cover a variety of genre and are each solid games.

Breath of the wild for sure. probably still best game on switch.

If you liked mario games on the snes, try mario odyssey, to see how far the series has come, it's pretty good!

If you don't have it already on pc, hollow knight, best metroidvania in the past 10 years.

If you like pokemon, you already have all those games, but I recommend pokemon snap or new mystery dungeon.

Rhythm games? Cytus, deemo, arcaea, voez are pretty good value for their money on switch (terrible value on android/ios), often half price here too.

Speaking of half price. dekudeals is the best place to look at nintendo e-shop titles. shows you stuff that are on sale. Things that are currently at their lowest ever. AND! It doesn't lag! (nintendo e shop is very laggy) Definitely worth a browse.

https://www.dekudeals.com/hottest

If you want to play with friends all over the globe, super smash bros is a fun game, not as fun as smash 4 on 3ds, but still incredible.
Mario kart 8 just recently got announced more dlc. 48 tracks on it's way for the next 2 years. It has longevity and people will be racing for a long time after that too.

3 upvotes on reddit
Mr_Chainsaw_88 · 3 years ago

Yeah, I've got dekudeals permanently opened in a tab on my phone, sorted by newest deals. It's awesome. I'd totally recommend keeping an eye on it as well.

It's how I decide on, and filter through games on the eShop. Without having to deal with lag on the Switch.

Snowrunner. It’s a game about off-road trucking and at first blush you probably think it’s like so many throw away vehicle games.

If you get past the tutorial and get a couple trucks, it is a super deep game.

It is equal parts super chill and absolutely terrifying.

I probably have a couple hundred hours into this game across switch and Xbox.

Supposedly they are implementing cross play for switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and pc. Up to 4 players.
