TL;DR
Battery Life Across Models
The Nintendo Switch models vary significantly in battery life. The Switch OLED generally offers the longest battery life, lasting around 5 to 6 hours during gameplay [1:1],
[3:6]. The Switch Lite provides a shorter battery life of approximately 3 hours
[1:1]. The new Switch 2, while offering enhanced performance, has a battery life ranging from 2 to 6.5 hours depending on the game being played
[1:1],
[3:1].
Impact of Game Intensity
Game intensity plays a crucial role in determining battery life. More demanding games like "Breath of the Wild" (BOTW) and "Fire Emblem: Three Houses" can drain the battery faster. For instance, BOTW can last about 2.5 hours on the original Switch, whereas the Switch 2 can extend this to nearly 4 hours [5:2]. Lighter games will naturally consume less power, allowing for longer play sessions
[3:1].
Display Technology and Battery Consumption
The display technology also affects battery consumption. OLED screens are more energy-efficient compared to LCDs, contributing to the longer battery life of the Switch OLED [3:4]. Despite the higher capacity battery in the Switch 2, its increased processing demands result in similar or slightly reduced battery life compared to the OLED model
[3:1].
External Solutions
For those concerned about battery life, external battery packs can be an effective solution. Users have recommended various power banks, such as the Ravpower Super-C Series and Anker's official Switch powerbank, which can extend playtime significantly [5:8],
[5:10]. These accessories can provide peace of mind for extended gaming sessions, especially when playing demanding titles.
Considerations Beyond Battery Life
While battery life is a significant factor, other considerations such as display quality, performance enhancements, and personal gaming preferences might influence the decision to upgrade or choose between models. Some users prioritize the improved performance of the Switch 2 despite its shorter battery life [3:1], while others appreciate the vibrant display and extended playtime of the OLED model
[3:4].

I wanna just add that Super Mario Odyssey had Switch 2 upgrade wich makes it run at a higher resolution than other two consoles. That may affect battery life drasticaly. For 1:1 test you should run SMO without any patches on every machine and then compare it's lifetime.
Sure but as of right now, the "plays your switch games better" is kind of the selling point of the console as there is really no switch 2 exclusives yet.
I love the Switch 2, it's everything I wanted out of the original Switch. Even though the Switch 2 is my main machine moving forward, I'll really miss the display colors and battery life of the OLED dearly. Hopefully a Switch 2 OLED arrives in a few years!
But why is the battery so weak when its a Switch 1 game? I mean, when its Cyberpunk its clear to me, that it need much more power but here?!
The s2 is likely running the s2 game update which is presumably more demanding than what is running on the s1. Still nuts that the oled has double the runtime though.
Because SMO was updated to take advantage of Switch 2 extra horsepower, so that console is working harder than OLED and Lite to play this game.
Well Swtich 2 is doing some sort of translation in order to to be able to run Switch 1 in the new hardware which is different. In Nintendo's words, it's something halfway between hawrdware compatibility and software emulation.
I suspect for this reason Switch 2 requires more processing power than Swtich 1 to run the same game, because it's doing some sort of partial emulation.
Plus, all the enhancements that Super Mario Odyssey got on Switch 2.
Switch 2: 2 hour 46 mins.
Switch OLED: 5 hour 27 mins.
Switch Lite: 3 hour 12 mins.
as someone that plays primarily undocked, this is why im waiting in getting a switch 2

Hey, did anyone checked or saw any review on the battery life, comparing Switch 1 titles running both on the OLED and on the new device?
Of course Mario Kart World and Cyberpunk are heavy games, but what about regular Switch titles like the Mario platformers, or maybe Animal Crossing?
Yup. It's about the same for the same title on both consoles for me.
Sounds good, so no compromise on existing library
All my Switch 1 games run even faster. However, in portable mode, due to non-integer scaling from 720p to 1080p, they appear slightly worse, but worth it for that perfect performance.
Hi all! Does anyone have any real-world experience comparing the battery life of the OLED vs the new Switch 2? I love my OLED and am satisfied with its battery life. I have a massive backlog (still working on Switcher) and don't really have a need for the Switch 2, but might appreciate the extra horsepower. I'm trying to decide if the performance increase I would gain by moving to the Switch 2 might be negated by the battery life.
Real world experience would go a long way in helping me decide. If you have any input based on first hand experience, would you please share?
Nintendo officially rates it at between 2-6.5hrs. Heavier games like TOTK will drain faster than a basic game like Among Us.
It has a higher capacity battery, but that's just to compensate for the higher power of the S2, so it's kind of a wash.
I have both S2 and OLED. It is noticeable that it lasts less than the OLED. But it definitely is something else playing BOTW at 60fps. :) For me the trade-off is worth it, but I'm a 70% docked player.
I don't expect you to know offhand, but I'll ask JUST in case: as you've been playing BOTW on the Switch 2, how long do you think the battery has lasted you? Is it truly as low as 2hrs as Nintendo claims?
Unfortunately I don't have that answer. I played it for about 30min so far in handheld mode, but didn't pay attention to the battery in that instance since I was testing all my games.
However I can say that I started with a full charge and I played Welcome Tour for about 3hrs, then almost another hour of MKW before reaching about 15% battery and stopping. Bear in mind I'm estimating, but trying to be conservative. (I remember that day I played from 8pm-midnight)
I don't think MKW is as demanding as BOTW or TOTK though, but I could be wrong since it's brand new and probably taking advantage of the new power.
I know with my OLED I was always amazed by how long I could go without charging it. With S2 it was noticeable I had to pay attention to the battery a bit.
I hope this helps ever so slightly at least. Lol :/
Edit: I have a Steam Deck and PS Portal too. And compared to those I'd say it's OLED > Portal > S2 > Steam Deck from best battery life to worst.
The Switch 2's battery life is kinda on the disappointing side (depending on the game and how bright you have the display at). OLED screens use less battery power than LCD screens. Yes, this LCD screen on the Switch 2 is nice, getting HDR at 400 nits is a tough ask but it's decent. But OLED has the superior blacks, contrast, and color saturation. We'll get a Switch 2 soon, that's obvious
Plus this is Nintendo we're talking about here. This is literally the Switch 1 playbook rewritten for Switch 2: Switch 2 > Switch 2 Lite > Switch 2 OLED.
Mine drains at 1% a min no matter what I play. I won’t be playing much as a handheld though so I’m fine with that.
OLED is probably a good 2-3x longer battery life.

I filtered out the games reviews2go hasn't yet reviewed on the v2 switch. You can toggle the filters however you so please.
Will add Lite when it comes out.

Update 8/25/2019 1:18 PM CST: Spoke with the original reviewer who did the battery tests and he confirmed that his og switch is only a month old. Check this message for a full explanation:

"The original model switch I currently use for my battery readings is only about a month old. My original launch unit bricked then and I had to replace it. However, given their logic in the tests vs how many charges/how old the unit is, there is no way to give them definitive readings for all games unless the one testing were to constantly buy new switch units pretty often, which is unrealistic, financially. After all, even after a single game's testing, that's already 4 full charges used up and depending on how many charges they consider 'valid' for not being accurate anymore, I wouldn't worry about it. Even if we were looking at a launch unit, the range likely wouldn't change that much for several years of use and the Switch is still only 2.5 years into its own life cycle. If this were a laptop battery we were testing, then it wouldn't be that big of a problem, because you just test it and you're done, but what they want is hundreds of games tested and by the time those hundreds of games are tested, their logic of "Hundreds of charges no longer being accurate" will already be used up. That would be a thousands of dollars undertaking, which just isn't realistic. In the years I've been incorporating battery tests into my reviews and the charts, this is the first time anyone's ever asked for such technical stuff as battery life vs how much lifelong energy the battery has left which we likely cannot detect without dismantling the system and using special equipment to survey the battery, itself. Honestly, I say don't worry about it. No one's ever asked me about stuff this technical in the reviews I put this info into. They're just happy to have a range/summary to look at for handheld mode. "
If you own a launch Switch please be aware that the screens on the new ones may be worse!! Japan Display was the exclusive display provider for Switch at launch. Since then they have branched out to several other manufactures and the screens having varying degrees of quality. My launch Switch had a beautiful display. This new one is much warmer (has more of a pinkish color to it) and does not get as bright. I honestly don't know if the battery upgrade was worth losing that display. Games like Breath of Wild looked so perfect on that original display.
I have a new and an old switch.. screens are definitely different. The new one is much warmer, but I prefer it over the older one. Seems brighter to me also, but I havent done a side by side comparison.
Any chance of getting a couple of photos of the two displays in action to give us an idea? Preferably on the white home screen at max brightness?
I was thinking of selling my current Switch to buy the V2.
This link will give you more info. If you scroll down a little in the thread you will see comparison pictures. https://www.resetera.com/threads/nintendo-expanded-lcd-suppliers-in-2017-jdi-no-longer-major-lcd-supplier-for-switch.15184/

This should be higher in the comments
Are you controlling for age/wear on original model Switches?
how are you getting 5 hours and 4 minutes out of Diablo 3 on max brightness? on 75% brightness i'm getting almost exactly 4 hours. are you turning the game on and letting it sit there until it dies? or playing the whole time?
well I'm guessing they are just letting it idle until it turn off, since it would be very difficult to match the gameplay exactly over the course of a few hours.
If you want numbers that represent real play time better, you have to do a lot more tests to get a somewhat accurate average playtime.
Just buy a good battery pack for your OG switch, problem solved :)
True :( plus this one's my first ever switch. Might give it a year or two before I buy a new one
unless they decide to release the switch pro but eh
I have about half of the games on the list and the difference is huge. I’m on pace for 12+ hours with the new Yugioh game using airplane mode and a lower brightness setting.
I did the trade in and also have a charging case I got off of amazon. Easily lasts 4-5 hours before I turn the charging case on which has a 10000 MhA battery. The new switch is totally worth the $75 if you only play handheld like me. I havent even taken the dock out of the box lol
So what is the old battery time?
Minimum battery life for BOTW is 2.5 hours with less than 3.5 hours at best.
As a side note the minimum battery for the current Switch on a demanding AAA game is a straight 2 hours. With the new Switch revision that should be bumped to 4 hours.
The same user showed in another video that 2 hours & 3 minutes in Fire Emblem Three Houses dropped the battery down from 100% to 61%.
Wow, my switch would die twice in that time period.
Not bad at all, that's like a 2 hour improvement.
Honestly though, I always carry a charger on me anytime I'm going to be playing for more than an hour or so. While it's nice for new owners, it's certainly not necessary.
Someone mentioned how having the new Switch means their battery bank will last longer too. I haven’t seen anyone else mention it, but the same applies to the Switch Lite. The Lite has poorer battery life than the new Switch because it has a smaller battery—a good power bank should provide the same number of hours of playtime for both the ‘new’ Switch and the Switch Lite.
Personally I’m pretty stoked!
2 hour improvement? My launch Switch doesn't even hold a 2 hour charge playing the new FE, so for me it would be about 3 hours!
It does, otherwise switch would connect to wifi and drain the battery faster.
Not OP, but I use the Ravpower Super-C Series 26800mAh. I bought this when I picked up my Switch shortly after launch. It’s a little heavier and a bit bulky but it fits fine in my Switch case, so it’s never an issue.
It is awesome! I never worry about battery life. Take Switch to park. Pack some snacks and beers. Play a game a bit. Plug into charger when necessary. It’s nice because it charges the Switch while you play, and a full charge goes a long way. I’ve never run out of battery life, and I only play my Switch in handheld mode, typically on the go / outside. It’s also great because it charges my phone really fast too.
Highly recommend this charger or something comparable. I’m sure there are even better options now.
Anker has an official switch powerbank
Right but we have to buy an upgraded console for that. It's definitely nice to have more battery life but I can't say that alone would get me to buy it.
ive been using a ravpower since launch. works great
I had mine full of charge (was playing docked on occasion for a while now) and took it out to play some Pokemon Violet, and after about 20-30 minutes it had used about 8% of my battery. My switch is about 4 years old (I got it in November 2019), and I wanted to compare it to other's console ages and battery.
Tears of the kingdom decimates my battery. I have a launch switch and it's probably gonna be dead after 2.5 hours. If I play something like the original final fantasy 7, or lately, golden sun, it takes several hours to get below 20%.
It definitely depends on how demanding the game is. Skyrim I can play for 2-3 hours before I need to charge. Stardew Valley I can play for 6-8 hours before needing to charge.
I would like to add to this too, If i try to play any new or continuous game(i.e Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2) the battery will drain due to how much is going on in a game. Other games such as animal crossing or even LoZ will take less due to A; less need of processors, and B; the games aren't as fast-paced as modern games. I am grateful that this was pointed out. Thank you
Playing DQ XI on switch drains the battery in almost 2 hours for me and it feels very warm too.
People in the comments here are drastically over estimating their battery life. No one is getting 5-7 hours on BoTW… lmfao
When my switch was brand new, it can last for 5.5 hours with med auto brightness, wifi off, bluetooth on on botw.
Now with after years and more play time, it can only last 4.5 hours with the same settings.
How many years u have the switch bro?
Several hours usually. 5 to 7 or so? Depends on how graphically intense and draining the game is. I've got an OLED. But my OG model lasted a long time also.
20% use an hour sounds about right. My switch is from release.
That's about what I estimate for mine
I appreciate them publishing this, but could not see why they would. A lot of people will start to wait, since the battery life difference is HUGE. Also a lot less heat for MK11 and other hot running games. Most consumers will not make the less heat connection until after using, but will get the battery life difference that was published.
Seems they would have not mentioned it, rather than publish and expect consumers to buy a now “inferior” version. Seriously, the battery life difference is huge.
It can also impact Lite sales, but if more regular Switches are sold, they have the same overall install base and make more money selling peripherals with the regular Switch...... Perhaps that is why they published, to seed that in folks heads. The Lite price will lure new customers that would not have purchased the original Switch due to price or size. Announcing the new Switch will also lure new customers as well, due to much more battery life.
I’m one of the latter, so will get the regular Switch when released. None the less, seems Nintendo will see a big sales dip until the Lite and new Switch version is released and rely on others not knowing, to sell current Switch inventory.
After all the conjecture above, I still have to say their candidness about the new improved model is refreshing.
Edited for clarification.
This is probably not going to be common knowledge amongst the general Switch-buying public. I would be shocked if your average mom was informed well enough to know or care about the difference in battery life on the Lite vs. the new model, and especially the old model vs the new model. They'll walk into the store and see $200 and $300 price points and make a decision based on that.

That being said, I'm glad that they announced it because I have enough extra money to afford a trade in and upgrade, so I'll probably do that. They wouldn't have gotten my sale otherwise, so it's at least working on some people.
Very easy to forget that people here are not "average consumers". The few (even if counted in thousands) people that will hold off to hunt for the revised model will not impact the sales in the grand scheme of things, where millions of units get sold yearly.
One of my biggest questions is if the “new” switch is if it’s gonna have the better battery life advertised on the box, or is it just going to look like the rest. What’s it going to look like when me as a consumer walks in to target to buy the one with the better battery life? Am I going to look for a box, or are we going to have to look at serial numbers to tell?
They had to switch chips they were using. Newer chips are more energy efficient.
>Seems they would have not mentioned it, rather than publish and expect consumers to buy a now “inferior” version.
It comes out about a month after being announced... no big deal.
>It can also impact Lite sales
Doubtful. The battery life on the lite is still good, and the form factor is for a completely different consumer.
>I’m one of the latter,so will get the regular Switch when released.
Ok. Doesn't this answer your post?
Not to mention that the Lite is 2/3 the price. That alone will drive sales.
I got chips
They announced a switch lite with a little bit different chipset (Tegra 214 vs Tegra 210) and LPDDR4X DRAM memory, both grants some battery boost to the console.
New revisions of original switch get the same hardware improvements just to optimize their production. Basically it's not improvement made for players, it's improvement made for facilities, on which switch is produced. That's all.
Then why list the battery life? The result though of over 50% more battery life and a cooler running device are pretty significant benefits for the consumers. Have you played MK11 or Red Faction? They run comically hot on the current Switch.
...So people will buy it? Why would they not list a highly marketable improvement to the revised model?
Because different people want different things. Simple as that.
I just got the Switch and playing Octopath Traveler. I am trying to figure out if the battery life I am getting is expected. I have my brightness set to around 50% and the wireless is on.
My battery goes from 100% to 50% in 1.5 hours. Are other folks with playing the same game seeing similar results?
Edit: thanks folks. Seems like I am not alone!
Yes that is exactly what I get. I have a 30000 mAh battery pack on the way to help with that. That's the single gripe I have with the switch.
It definitely depends on the game as well, Octo is a very resource intense game alongside Mario Odyssey probably as the most power hungry. In general though, that original 2-3 hours of battery Nintendo originally stated is pretty dead on. I do notice about a 10 percent or so gain in battery. Especially if you're in a part of your house that is a weaker signal and the switch is constantly reconnecting/authenticating, that can wreck your battery life without you ever realizing or getting any benefit from it.
Hmm I played breath of the wild at work for quite some time and had about 20-30% life left. I’m talking like 2-3 hours plus sleep mode throughout my 10 hour day.
Though it is brand new.
Yes. Easily. Exact same results
Nice, thanks.
Need a test with Final Fantasy XII, Fire Emblem: 3 Houses, or any other battery hogger for switch.
Somebody posted a video with fire emblem and I think it was 4.5 - 5 hours battery life. I won’t know for sure until my new one comes in tomorrow.
Fe3h is definitely much better. Playing for an hour and I'm only down 18% (minimum brightness, adaptive on in a flourescent-lit office, not airplane mode) and the switch itself is running much quieter and cooler.
Also, even on minimum brightness the screen is very visible. I had to have my older switch on at least 30% or so to enjoy it here.
So 4.5-5 hours seems definitely reasonable. More with airplane mode.
It went from about 2.5 to 5 ish.
Of course things like Bluetooth, WiFi, amount of controllers, and brightness will affect this by maybe half an hour. The good news is this is now a truly handheld console that can be played for hours. Now can we get a first party stand.
I traded in old model for new one yesterday (GameStop’s deal was too good for me to pass up, especially since I’m constantly traveling).
Can confirm that the extra battery life makes it 100% worth the upgrade.
Zelda estimates are spot on; FE 3H I’ve been playing today in the office for roughly 3 hours and at 52 percent now.
Mind you my settings aren’t crazy, maybe 45% brightness and auto turned on.
But to me it definitely makes a big difference in use factor
Couple things I noticed with my new unit. The screen is a little warmer "reddish hue" compared to my old screen, and it doesn't get quite as bright. The joy-cons wiggle less when attached. The switch came preinstalled with a screen protector.
man I'm gonna pull the trigger on the GS deal. I have a launch day Switch and a few game I want to get rid of. The new longer battery life is too good to pass up.
I did the same. Feels good to have a new Switch and fresh Joy-Con. Battery life is a plus for sure since I travel a lot and take the train to work.
Literally exactly what I did: picked up the Switch at midnight launch and needed that battery.
How is switching digital purchases?
I haven't seen a definitive answer on this and I definitely want the better battery life, but I don't wanna lose my digital library
The new Switch is also a lot quieter and cooler than the OG Switch. I remember being worried about my Switch when I first played BOTW and heard the loud fan and eventually felt the heat of the console. The new one however, didn't have those issues after playing BOTW for an hour, which I should add, left my battery at 88%, it would easily be on the 60s on the original model.
The new Switch has a red box, while the older model has a white one you have probably already seen.
I played Cyberpunk hand-held on quality mode for 2 hours. The battery went from full to 26%. It looks amazing.
So basically if you plan on playing a big game like that in handheld mode with all the settings turned up? I don't usually play the big games in handheld mode
The battery life is terrible.
Got mine this morning. Opinion: not very good lol 2.5 hours for Breath of the Wild Enhanced edition
2 hours
very interested as well...
