TL;DR The Nintendo Switch OLED offers a superior handheld experience with a better screen, improved kickstand, and additional storage. If you primarily play in handheld mode or tabletop mode, the OLED is worth the extra cost. However, if you mainly play docked, the original Switch may suffice.
Screen Quality and Handheld Experience
The most significant difference between the Nintendo Switch and the Switch OLED is the screen quality. The OLED model features a larger, glass OLED screen with vibrant colors and better contrast compared to the plastic LCD screen of the original Switch [2:1]. This makes the OLED model particularly appealing for those who play primarily in handheld mode, as it enhances the visual experience significantly
[1:3],
[3:5].
Additional Features
Beyond the screen, the OLED model includes several other upgrades. It has 64GB of internal storage compared to 32GB in the original [2:1]. The OLED's kickstand is vastly improved, offering more stability for tabletop gaming
[3:1]. Additionally, the OLED dock includes a built-in Ethernet port, which can be beneficial for online gaming
[1:6],
[4:2].
Price Considerations
The OLED model is generally priced about $50 to $100 more than the standard Switch [2:4],
[3:7]. For those who play mostly docked, this price difference might not justify the upgrade, as the gaming performance remains unchanged when docked
[1:4],
[3:4]. However, for handheld players, the enhanced screen and features may be worth the additional cost
[3:2].
Longevity and Durability Concerns
Some users express concerns over OLED technology due to potential longevity issues, such as burn-in [5:2]. While these concerns are valid, many find the benefits of the OLED display outweigh these risks, especially given the advancements in OLED technology that mitigate such problems
[5:1].
Conclusion
Ultimately, the choice between the Nintendo Switch and the Switch OLED depends on your gaming habits. If you frequently use handheld mode, the OLED's superior screen and features make it a worthwhile investment. Conversely, if you primarily play docked, the original Switch provides similar performance at a lower cost.
Hi all,
I recently had my switch and all of it’s contents stolen out of the back of my car and am looking to replace it. I’ve considered the OLED model since where I am it doesn’t seem to be that much more, but after speaking with a friend, his suggestion was to wait until Nintendo released something else to see if it was better. What are your thoughts on the normal switch vs the OLED? TIA!
Edit: the resounding answer is OLED, thank you all so much! I’ve already ordered one and it’s on its way!
I have had both including the light and the OLED is by far my favorite version of the switch thus far. You won't regret it one bit!
I upgraded my launch Switch to an OLED model and it’s truly a night and day difference between screens. If you’re playing mainly handheld, go OLED for sure, you won’t regret it.
The OLED doesn't outperform the regular Switch in terms of gaming prowess. The handheld experience is superior as well as table top mode. You get a better dock with the OLED.
Holding out to the next console from Nintendo can take years. Won't be here before 2024 probably
Nintendo releases a new console every six years and the Switch came out in 2017...
If anything the lite and the OLED are the Model 2 Wii and the Wii Mini of this gen
Nintendo claims the switch is only halfway done in it's lifespan. While I doubt that, since it's just way too dated, I do think there's at least another couple years of switch left.
So does the OLED function the same as the base Model when docked? I was going to get one cause my switch is LOUD and is just getting louder. I was going to upgrade and get another but if it’s the same docked I might get a new base model and save some money
They are identical. It has more storage, way better screen and a better kickstand and dock. My OLED outperformed my old V1 because I bought at launch so it was very well used hahaha. You'll get most benefits from the OLED in handheld and tabletop mode.
If you never play mobile then don’t worry about the oled, if you play exclusively handheld or sometimes and the extra cash something that you are willing to pay then absolutely. I guess even with a tv if you plan on keeping it for the long run, way after the switch’s life cycle then it can be nice to have.
Switch V2. Save some money. It's a waste to buy an OLED if you're not planning on enjoying the screen and the kickstand. It does have a better dock with the ability for a LAN connection without a dongle (the build in LAN is gigabit Vs the dongle only being 100mbit)
A lot of people say oled isn’t worth it but I really disagree. There’s a lot of little differences in the oled besides the screen that no one talks about that make it worth the extra $50. Better stand, better speakers, better storage. I say get the oled especially if you mainly play handheld
Ikr I love my new white switch oled. I’m glad I got it on march 14 my birthday and the next day bought super smash and Mario kart so colorful on the oled screen!
You need the OLED, it's a far superior product if you play in handheld mode.
So whats the diffrence between a switch and a switch oled
The OLED model has a larger screen with smaller bezels. While the original Switch’s screen is plastic and LCD, the OLED model’s is glass and OLED. (OLED is far superior, in case you didn’t know.)
The OLED has 64 gigabytes of storage instead of 32. It has slightly better speakers and a vastly improved kickstand.
The dock the OLED comes with has an ethernet port built in. The original Switch’s dock had an additional USB port instead. I’ve heard that either Switch works in either dock but I haven’t tried it.
The OLED model is larger by about a millimeter, so some accessories for the original Switch may not work with the OLED model, such as some cases.
I think that’s everything. In short, the OLED is better in almost every way.
I can confirm that both switches are compatible with either dock
Only a $50 difference in retail price too. Cross-compatibility with all Switch games.
Unless you play handheld mode a lot, there’s no reason to get oled
OLED
This video will show u every difference https://youtu.be/Awkidvf5Yos
About $100
Hi all. I want to buy a Nintendo switch and i've Just found out about the existence of the switch oled. If i'm not wrong the only difference is the screen. The oled version costs about 100€ more than the standard version. Is it worth?
If you don’t have a switch period, and you are going to utilize handheld as well then I would go for the OLED model. It’s only $50 more than the normal switch and you get a better kickstand for table top, a nicer display, crisper colors, and better image quality in handheld. If you just want it as a home console then I’d maybe consider the regular one
OLED has better screen and (theoretically) better battery time. But it worth only when you playing it handheld.
I'll play handheld manly, at least 90% of the time. Is the difference worth the money?
Not for me. Yes, colors looks better and it helps you to play in well-lit apartment, but it doesn't worth 100$. 25 tops. Yet again default switch doesn't worth it's money too.
Oled is great if you play handheld it's worth it you play that way. If you play docked it's not worth it.
I'll use it mostly handheld. Do u think the graphic difference between the two is noticeable?
Yes ist is. If you use it mostly handheld buy the oled. 👍
There is no graphic difference it's just better coolers and bigger screen. If it is worth it is just up to you
If you’re only playing handheld, it’s 100% worth it. I used to never play handheld until I got the OLED, and now I almost exclusively play handheld
I'll play mostly handheld. Thanks for the feedback.
It may even be worth a Switch Lite if price is your concern. It feels better to play handheld for long period of time
I have had a Switch Lite for the longest time, but I recently purchased a Switch Oled (instead of the vanilla Switch). The main draw for me was, funnily enough, the functioning kickstand. More often than not I play in handheld, but if I just want to melt onto my bed and play I can just place the thing anywhere and it'll actually stay standing! It's frustrating that Nintendo considers the off-center toothpick on the back of the vanilla switch to be sufficient, but there are some other nice things about the Oled so it was worth paying $350 instead of $300
Hello! Looking into buying my first switch. I’ve never played one before but recently have been dying to pick one up and play Zelda, Mario, and Pokémon. Should I get the original switch or try to find an OLED in stock? Pros and cons to either? Thank you!
Oled - Better Screen, Better Stand, 64 Gb of Storage, New Dock (with Ethernet), $350
OG - Basic Screen, Bad Stand, 32gb of Storage, Old Dock (No Ethernet), $300
If you buy an Ethernet Adaptor and a 32gb SD Card along an original Switch you may be spending $20 less than the Oled, not a big save.
Also the Oled Screen is closer to a Samsung Phone in colors, viewing angles, etc. Probably is the better option for 2022 standards
Only thing I complain daily is that Ethernet. It’s only at FE speeds 😔
I'll stick with original, not that I've had OLED but heard few negative issues like greenish tint in the display which put me off. I'm quite sensitive with bright colours, hurt my eyes causing headaches and I believe OLED models really pop out. For those reasons I'm happy with the original and an official pro controller. Whatever you decide I'm sure you be happy with your choice :)
Thanks for all the input from everyone! I was able to snag an OLED on Amazon this morning at list price. Hope delivery is smooth. Can’t wait to play it!
Oled is better and a Pro Controller may improve your performances
Get the best one you can. We’re spoiled with smartphones with bright and vibrant displays.
Switch OLED is fantastic in terms of colors, contrast and also much brighter making it a bit easier to use outdoors.
For my reason?
Thanks!
I'm not in support of OLED technology in the first place due to longevity issues, sure I might not burn it in the way most people think as I keep it varied and don't play at the highest brightness setting but It'll always be in the back of my mind, I want something that at least has a chance at lasting a lifetime without having to give second thoughts on how bright or how much I play something. OLED is the bastard stopgap tech between something much better to come (high density microLED FALD that's already being produced, and microLED).
Wear of OLED panels with varied content results in hotspots and patchyness that's visible in solid colors and with scrolling elements as there is no perfectly even wear.
3600 hours before visible burn-in on those panels, you'll end up with a hotspot at around that amount of time despite varied content (see TVs with the center more worn than the edges), it's not big deal or even noticeable for most people, but it is for me. All my OLED phones have brightness unevenness despite not having much typical burn-in (some do have normal burn-in too though). It's especially easy to see if scrolling on a non-black background.
3600h is a realistic amount of play, I have consoles and portables from the early 80s that work like new with just some recaps here and there.
As far as longevity goes I always go the extra mile, I've already modified my Switch backplate to give in case of lithium battery swell, another technology I dislike due to how unsafe it is. Literally meant to destroy the device when they go bad and swell up (spicy pillow subreddit)
If I want great graphics I'm going to play on a big TV with a good sound system, not portably, games already look bad in portable mode with how the performance and visual quality is dropped, there's moments where Mario Odyssey looks like Wii graphis when playing portably with how the resolution drops so much, OLED doesn't fix that. Smaller games that fit being portable is what I play on the switch screen, games where graphics aren't that great or detailed to begin with.
Mostly I don't want to contribute to the sale of OLED panels to speed up this phase for the incoming (and cheapening) of better panel technology.
That’s good food for thought. Lemme “trust but verify”.
What is the advantage of the non OLED?
The only one I can think of is the V1 Switch was moddable.
All are moddable now if you know how to solder
I only play on my TV so I prefer it just for the fact that it's cheaper for the same hardware
I don't prefer it, but I don't have the money to upgrade it right now, so it's the next best thing.
I still have my launch day switch, and I never play handheld. But I just bought my wife the TotK OLED because she plays handheld quite a bit and it is a nice screen.
I just got my first switch last week. I’m 60 and getting into gaming. I was wondering if there are any advantages of getting a OLED?
What’s the difference if if I played it docked or handheld for the OLED?
Docked IDK. But in handheld OLED screen is just in another level. LCD looks very outdated and small. Also sound is better in OLED. Battery life is not that very noticeable, but slightly better on OLED too.
When docked, both models are the same. It's purely a difference in handheld mode.
Docked OLED has more internal storage and a built in Ethernet port (instead of a dongle).
When playing in Handheld mode, the screen is slightly larger on the OLED Model, and will also look better with more vibrant colors since it has a better screen. The kickstand is better, it has more internal storage, a better battery, improved speakers (crisper and louder sound), and the dock has an ethernet cable. The output to the TV however is the same on both models, maxing out at 1080p/60FPS (though usually not reaching that for most games). I suggest the OLED model.
The oled looks better and has a better battery.
I have Luigi mansion on normal switch. I have a 55 inch tv with 4k how dose it look better? I want to get another set for my bedroom, that’s why I am asking. And was thinking OLED. Is it a huge difference in game play?
They were meaning when using it as a normal device. If you planned to only use it docked the only very minor advantage would be Ethernet support for better latency with multiplayer games.
What percent do you plan to have it docked and undocked?
Edit: saw further down it will be docked 99 percent of the time. Save your $50 and don’t get the OLED.
I would recommend just buying another switch dock for your bedroom so when you wanna play something in the bedroom you just take the switch and put it in the different dock that way you only have to buy a new dock and not buy a whole new switch
The batteries are the same capacity, the oleds screen is just a little more efficient.
...the Switch is plugged into an outlet on the tv. It can live literally forever. How could there possibly be one?
For the current regular Switch (v2) and the OLED, the battery life should be about the same. The launch Switch (v1) had shorter battery life.
I wanna buy a Nintendo Switch. I already have a pc and a oculus vr headset but i want a switch because of the cool exclusives and the portablity. I can't decide if i want the oled or the og. It will be much easier for me to get the og because its a lot cheaper and theres a lot of them in my country. The oled on the other side has a bigger screen and thats pretty much it. Its also more expensive and out of my budget. I heard thats its not any faster than the og and resolution is still the same. What do you think? Should i get the switch now and buy some extra games or save up more for the oled without any games.
The main reason im hesitant to get the OLED is because the screen will crack if dropped, and the original and improved battery version is somewhat less fragile. But that big screen is awesome.
Unless you really want the improved screen of the OLED, no reason to not get the original
The oled is the choice if you're gonna use it in hand held a lot. So if you plan on playing at home mostly, it might not be necessary
Buy the option that allows you to afford more games, after all what is a console without them?
wise words
If you're mainly playing docked, get the OG. If you're mainly playing mobile, OLED.
hello, i just got my first switch a couple weeks ago for a pretty good price. me personally, im more of a casual gamer but im kinda having second thoughts abt not getting an OLED model .. are there any other benefits to the OLED other than the screen? just curious about yalls experiences :)
Nah just enjoy. If you wanna upgrade, go switch 2. Its a bigger upgrade than 1 to oled.
i refuse to believe the color range is equivalent. darks will 100% be washed out when playing outdoors in low lit game environments. i’ll proudly be sticking with and recommending the oled over the switch 2
Performance+screen size+switch2 games > slightly better screen quality.
This is correct. OLED is great until you get a Switch2 and Doom (2016) is 7 minutes faster loading into the game.
Bigger screen size, colors are gorgeous on OLED and true blacks. A game like Hollow Knight looks stunning on OLED.
Took this pic at the time I upgraded to a Swoled.
Way better battery than even Nintendo’s estimates. I can play so many games for 4-6 hours no problem. The switch 2 (if you’re lucky) will give ya about 2-2.5 hours.
The better battery is also included in the base switch if it's the v2 model, which might be OP's case. It's not exclusive to the OLED.
You're right, though, the battery improvement in the OLED/V2 models was fantastic, I am holding off on getting the Switch 2 because I know the short battery will frustrate me.
I truly dislike what you’ve done to your switch
I suppose nobody’s opinions matter. Their switch doesn’t even matter. This is a forum to discuss thoughts and ideas on the switch. I’m giving mine. You’re free to give yours. Yours equally doesn’t matter
Wrong, battery life is MUCH better on the Oled.
The B button looks even worse to me.
The kickstand is SO much better on the OLED (really disappointed that the switch 2 didn’t keep it) but yeah, the screen is definitely the selling point but probably not worth buying a new switch over if you already have one.
Title
The OLED has a LAN port built into the dock, has double the internal storage at 64GB and generally has a better build quality than the base model.
Once you see that oled screen you’re gonna wanna play handheld
I have an OLED tv and monitor. Unless it won't display as good as the built in screen.
But the beauty of handheld play while chilling in bed or on the couch with an oled screen is unmatched
Only reason I can think of is higher base storage and a not horrible dock
Life loves to throw our plans out of the window
Speaking as someone who only plays docked, and has an OLED… Not really, no. I only got the oled because I was using a launch switch and the battery is pretty much kaput. The extra onboard memory and build quality is nice.
Nintendo Switch vs Nintendo Switch OLED
Key Considerations:
Display Quality:
Audio:
Storage:
Kickstand:
Battery Life:
Recommendation: If you primarily play in handheld mode or tabletop mode, the Nintendo Switch OLED is worth the investment due to its superior display, improved audio, and better kickstand. However, if you mainly use the console docked or are on a budget, the standard Nintendo Switch still offers a great gaming experience.
