TL;DR
Battery Life Challenges in Gaming Laptops
Gaming laptops are notorious for having poor battery life, especially under heavy workloads like gaming. Most models struggle to last more than 2 hours while gaming due to high power consumption [1:3],
[1:6]. However, some users have found ways to extend battery life during lighter tasks by adjusting settings such as screen brightness and refresh rates
[2:2],
[4:3].
Recommended Models
Several models stand out for offering a reasonable compromise between gaming performance and battery life:
Asus Zephyrus G14/G15: These laptops are frequently recommended for their balance of performance and battery efficiency. The G14, equipped with an RTX 3060, is noted for being lightweight and portable [5:2]
[5:4].
Dell G15 with AMD CPU: This model has been reported to achieve up to 10 hours of battery life when not gaming, thanks to its efficient AMD processor [4:5].
Lenovo Legion Slim 7: Suggested for those who need a gaming laptop that can also handle long periods unplugged [1:12]
[5:5].
Factors Affecting Battery Life
When choosing a gaming laptop with better battery life, consider the following factors:
Processor Type: AMD Ryzen processors are known for their power efficiency, which can help extend battery life [4:7].
GPU Management: Technologies like Optimus allow switching off the discrete GPU to save power [4:7].
Battery Size: Larger batteries (80Wh or more) generally provide longer usage times [4:7].
Display Settings: Lowering screen refresh rates and brightness can significantly extend battery life [2:2],
[4:3].
Additional Considerations
While gaming laptops typically don't excel in battery longevity, using external USB-C power banks or chargers can be a practical solution for extending usage time without relying solely on the internal battery [1:10]. Additionally, it's important to note that running demanding applications on battery can lead to reduced performance and potential long-term battery damage
[1:11].
I search for a gaming laptop in a price range from 900 to 1500 dollars that batter life under heavy workload (a.k.a playing newest games on high or above, rendering and all 3d related work) is at least 6 hours.

Any recommendations for a laptop that fits these requirements?
If it has a 99 Wh battery, a Ryzen CPU that you forcibly cap at like 10W, turn down brightness and refresh rate to minimum, I guess it could do it. But that's not "heavy workload" by any means as it will be running pretty slow.
Maybe get some external batteries that can charge the laptop via USB C.
Powerbank charging? Tried. Doesn't work on mine. If you have a gaming pc that's built with that in mind to recommend - i'm listening
Gaming like loads while running on battery? None excel at that, 2hrs outaide max. Maybe just seek one w biggest battery and most efficient cpu and gpu.
Or buy macbook pro or whatever.
Lenovo legion slim 7 comes to mind
Its an efficient model for sure. But... Maybe for a light game, no gaming laptops exist that can run AAA games for more than two hours (rarely more than an hour) and to run at all, performance is cut back on battery. Thats just the nature of power, battery capacity.
No way any gaming laptops gonna last that long on battery while gaming and it's also bad for battery too. That battery is for light work and also when the power shuts
No way you'll find anything close to that. Capacity and how much wattage the battery can output is the main issue here. There might be laptops that can do that for 2.5 hours, but don't expect amazing performance or anywhere near high settings
The problem is, that batteries in laptops are usually smaller than 100Wh due to FAA regulations. And power consumption is high.
The only laptops that can last that long under load are Apple's new M1/M2 MacBooks. But they're useless for 3D design and gaming.
In any laptop that's not a MacBook, putting the system under significant load while not plugged in not only results in reduced performance but also very high potential to damage the battery over the long term.
Please help me explain my situation backwards to you.
I found that my 3080 desktop at 4k (BIG screen) is just as sharp as my 1080p 15 inch screen. I actually find my 15 inch screen possibly sharper, because the big screen is so big. A PPI/DPI thing.

That said, with an approximately 15 inch screen, My FPS in gaming is higher on my 3070 laptop, than my 3080 desktop at 4k.

With THAT said, yes I do have a higher FPS on my laptop, im going to get longer battery life on my 3070 laptop, than a 3080 or 3080ti laptop made by the same manufacturer.
So with that said, maybe look for a 3070 or 70 series laptop which uses less power, but comes with a 99 or 100 watt battery, and NOT an 80 watt battery.

You might find you get the most battery life therefore, from a 3060 if you can retro-fit a 100w battery (some legion laptops let you do this) or a 3070 or 3070ti running on a 100 watt battery, and avoid the 3080ti laptops.
If I could have my dream laptop, I would choose this way:
- Its a lenovo legion laptop (I like the build quality best)
- Ryzen for best battery life.
- I want a 3070 or thereabouts, as the fps in gaming is fine at 1080p for me, pinsharp at 15 inch.
- Which one has the 100 watt battery... and Id grab that one.
Sorry for such a long post. I wouldnt choose my next laptop any other way I dont think. And am thrilled with my 3070 that I have now, except wish I went with a 100w 3070 instead of an 80w 3070.
Hey everyone,
I'm in the market for a new laptop and battery life is a big priority for me. Specifically, I'm wondering if the battery life of gaming laptops gets drained quickly when just watching videos or browsing the web.
I've been looking into some options and came across the Asus Zenbook 14 (2024), which seems to be one of the best this year in terms of battery life. Ideally, I'm looking for a notebook that's around 15 inches or less.
Do any of you have experience with gaming laptops and their battery performance during lighter tasks? Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your help!
Max I got was 7 hours, Acer Predator Triton 14 (i7-13700H/RTX4050/16GB) Turning cpu boost off and screen to 60hz, screen display 50% brightness and in eco mode.
If battery life is a concern, you don't buy a gaming laptop. I get about 2.5hr on a Vector GP66 (12800HX, 32gb DDR5). I can stretch my old gaming laptop (HP Pavilion i5-9300H, 16gb DDR4) to 4 hours by dropping the screen brightness.
Contrast my 13" Lenovo L13 (AMD 5675u, 8gb DDR4) with max brightes gets 6 hours. Similar number for a 14" Lenovo Flex5 (AMD 4300, 4gb DDR4) with max brightness.
Don’t buy gaming laptop pls
I travel a lot and need something to game when I’m out of town
This is like asking which dragster gets the best gas mileage
I have an asus zenbook s14 oled.. its very lightweight, battery is also great, performance is comparable to a 3050 rtx.. but the main issue is overheating due to demanding games..
I am going into college and am looking to purchase a laptop with enough battery life to not need to charge throughout the day but also the ability to game in the evenings. I realise these criteria are sort of niche but thought here would be the best place to ask for any recommendations you would know of.
How about legion 7 gen 7 amd. How’s the battery life on that?
Anything amd will do 5+ hours excluding that one Lenovo $550 budget laptop with a tiny battery
I think that legions 5 and 7 drain battery quick.
( if I remember correctly )
My Asus has a 90Wh battery and last a really long time. I think with the screen set to 60Hz and in the windows power efficiency mode it can last like 8-10 hours.
Dell G15 with AMD CPU can get 10 hours if you read reviews. The 3060 version with 165hz is $1049 on their site right now.
Excellent deal IMO. I love mine.
No gaming laptops will have enough battery to game all day, most can drain a battery in 2 hours or less when not plugged in. However many are now offering usbc charging 100w+ (2022 models are a bit higher iirc). This is probably one of the easiest ways to go about it so you only have to carry a usbc brick not the normal ac power adapter.
That being said if battery life is your goal you'd probably want something with a 3060, as they're less power hungry but still competent in games.
I'm in the same situation and went with an asus zephyrus g15 (2021). Like all gaming laptops it can suck the battery dry really quick if you let it, but if you throw it on a more conservative performance mode it does pretty well. It uses a lower power version of the gpu (85w vs 125/165w on more performance oriented machines). You lose a bit of peak performance but it does extend the battery life and allow the laptop to be much more thin and portable. I also chose it because it doesn't scream "gamer", so I feel less awkward pulling it out in public.
When you say that most laptops drain in 2 hours, is this while gaming or while studying ?
Depends on the performance mode you're using. Gaming is what will kill it quick, if you use a silent or battery saving mode some laptops can get decent life, say 6-10hr generally.
You can also further customize the power plans to extend this.
Sounds like you didn't even read his post
If battery life is important to you, look for laptops that have:
So as the title says I'm currently in the market for a gaming laptop with decent performance and good battery life. I'm aware that most of them usually have a poor battery life which isn't great as I am a student and well running out of power during class is a huge inconvenience. I have looked at all-rounder laptops from Dell, Hp, and Acer but the specs only seem to top out at around 1650/1650ti which is a bit low for the games I want to play. Ideally, the laptop below is the kind of laptop I'm interested in as its battery life is good but the bulk and weight of it are the minuses as I am a student.

Overall those are the things I'm looking for when I buy one eventually.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions
Zephyrus G14/15? Comes with botb 3060 and 3070, but no webcam iirc
Yup zephyrs are probably your best choice I would recommend the g14 with the rtx 3060 very lightweight and small
slim 7 or g14 or the strix g15 ae
Legion slim 7 and zephyrus 14
Blade 14 FHD 3060 for portability and battery life.
Hello, thanks in advance for all your help!
I play a pretty large variety of games (total war games, bg3, football managers, lots of 4x games, e33, etc.), and while I have a PC I travel a lot. Price isn't really an issue. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding good gaming laptops that are capable of running good games (don't need it to be on ultra or anything), but that are also reliable, aren't too disruptive if I'm using it for work in a classroom or on a plane, and have a long battery life?
zephyrus g14/16 with the ryzen ai hx 370 is probably the best option. razer blade is also there ig, hp omen transcend maybe? also the new acer 14in laptops
most other gaming laptops come with hx chips which are just desktop chips so theyll be power hungry/heavy

I have an older acer predator that has about an hour and a half battery life when I'm doing light tasks. Undervolting the cpu can help squeeze some more life (and performance if done right).
its really the gpu that drains laptop batteries. 3060/4060 laptops tend to have the best battery life, once you make that 3070/4070 or higher jump battery life quickly goes down no matter what your doing, if your looking to watch videos or browse, you can always buy a tablet or you can buy a high capacity power bank to charge your laptop when your on the go.
Hello all,I’m currently leaning towards the zephyrus g15 or m16 since as I have seen, they have a pretty good battery life. I was wondering, what other similar options are out there?I’m not looking to game on battery ofcourse, I just need a laptop that can last me on study sessions or work outside of home(browsing, office, autoCAD). Looking for something with ryzen or intel 7,9 and at least an rtx3070. Preferably an msi or lenovo if not an asus but I’m open to all the suggestions!! Thanks in advance!
From my experience AMD laptops have way better battery life than intel. Also probably get something with a 1080p screen.
Yes
On battery saver, I can get close to 5 hours
Yeah the best we can do is about 30 minutes
But I'mma need to have a friend look at it
From my research when I bought my laptop in the summer, the G15 will have better battery life due to using AMD. However, you will probably get better gaming performance from the M16 overall (but higher temperatures too). Also, the M16 has thunderbolt. If you do graphics, audio, of design work and need to transfer large files that may be worth looking into.
I would look at Lenovo Legion 5 as a good competitor. It has a higher wattage so even a 3060 might outperform the 3070 in the zeph, or be equivalent. I suspect you won’t get too many hours on battery alone but probably enough to get some solid work done at a coffeeshop or airport.
If you aren’t bothered with cost, you could look at Razer too (but it seems like a third of the bill is just for brand, and they seem to have battery issues).
so I`m trying to find a gaming laptop that can play a game in a long time while not connected to a power source, my ideal battery life is around 2 hours gameplay for AAA game like cyberpunk or horizon zero dawn, I`m ok with a low graphic setting, is there any good recommendation?
thank you :)
I get 8-9 hrs on my Zeph G15 which has a 90whr
interesting, is it 2021 version? or the newest one?
2021
You're gonna need a power generator because a Gaming laptop without a power source is like a Ferrari without an engine.
I know, but I travel a lot, and power generator is not something that we can get easily here
That is unfortunate 😕
Get a steam deck honestly, laptops just can't game well without a power source unless you get a m1 MacBook but those aren't known for good gaming performance
I`m planning to get that, but maybe in 2023 or 2024, since our country are not in their pre order list, and its seems the price is skyrocketing due the scalper
That’s not happening ever
Make a compromise, that is literally not going to happen
I can’t tell you anything about specific laptops, but it is good to know that amd based laptop consume less power and tend to have a better battery life. Intel on the other hand, especially with their 12th gen, has more performance, but it consumes more power
I see, got it, thank you :)
Hi Everyone! I am looking for a gaming laptop, around 2500 at max that has decent battery life. I personally need 8-10 hours. I was looking at the MacBook pro 16, but I am making sure all my games work on it. Do you have any recommendations? Would the Rog Strix Tablet with Ryzen 9 365+ max be a good option? What would you all recommend?
if you want a straight up Macbook replacement get a ROG Zephyrus with a ryzen AI 9 370hx CPU I have a G16 version and with the help of Ghelper I can make it last 8-14 hours a day on battery while using software like Photoshop on decent brightness. And when it comes to gaming it destroys any game I throw at it with little fan noise some lighter games like cs2 has me getting 200fps at max settings with 0 fan noise and my temps are only at 80C.

None will compare to a MacBook. But an AMD APU will be best.
Well, Actually! There are now laptops - just as you say, they do need to have an AMD CPU: https://youtu.be/typTJtq4XEU?feature=shared
We've come a long way but Apple is neither battery champ in the sector of phones, neither laptops.
The Ryzen AI 7 350 is the one to get, as you'll see here: https://youtu.be/typTJtq4XEU?feature=shared
>Would the Rog Strix Tablet with Ryzen 9 365+ max be a good option?
If you mean ROG FLOW Z13 with Ryzen 395.
It's... incredibly expensive for the performance it offers, the battery life shouldn't be bad but that's hardly a justification for 5050 gaming performance at north of $2000. I doubt you have to have the touch screen or the front facing camera. It's somewhat better than traditional laptop for gaming on battery for a few hours, but that's not what you meant.
Just look for an AI 350 or 255H or better laptop with a discrete GPU, their idle power isn't necessarily lower but it's easy to find a laptop with bigger battery, say a Zephyrus G16. Or the 2025 Acer Predator Triton if endurance is something you absolutely won't compromise on.
best gaming laptops with long battery life
Key Considerations for Gaming Laptops with Long Battery Life:
Processor and GPU Efficiency: Look for laptops with newer generation processors (like Intel's 11th/12th Gen or AMD's Ryzen 5000 series) and efficient GPUs (like NVIDIA's RTX 30 series) that balance performance and power consumption.
Battery Capacity: A laptop with a larger battery (measured in watt-hours, Wh) typically offers longer battery life. Aim for at least a 60Wh battery for decent longevity.
Display Technology: Opt for laptops with a lower resolution (like 1080p) and IPS panels, as they consume less power compared to 4K displays.
Power Management Features: Look for laptops that have good power management settings, allowing you to optimize performance and battery life based on your needs.
User Reviews and Benchmarks: Check reviews and benchmarks specifically for battery life during gaming and regular use, as real-world performance can vary significantly.
Recommendations:
Asus ROG Zephyrus G14: Known for its excellent balance of performance and battery life, it features AMD Ryzen processors and can last up to 10 hours on a single charge under light use.
Razer Blade Stealth 13: This ultraportable gaming laptop offers a good mix of gaming performance and battery life, lasting around 10 hours with its Intel Iris Xe graphics.
