TL;DR
Popular Platforms
Board Game Arena is frequently recommended as a versatile platform that hosts many popular board games. It offers games like Saboteur, The Werewolves of Millers Hollow, King of Tokyo, and Carcassonne [1:2]
[5:1]. It's accessible from browsers, making it suitable for users with limited download capabilities
[3:1].
Netgames.io provides online versions of several party games such as Codenames, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, Spyfall, Secret Sith, Avalon, Love Letter, and Enigma [1:1]. These games are great for larger groups and can be played easily over platforms like Discord.
Jackbox Games are ideal for casual gatherings and support up to eight players. They include various mini-games like Drawful and can be played remotely by screen-sharing the host's game [1:8]
[3:7].
Specific Game Recommendations
For those interested in classic board games, Colonist.io offers an online version of Settlers of Catan, which is suitable for 3-4 players [3:2]. Playingcards.io allows customization of card games and can be used to play traditional games like chess and checkers
[3:2].
Tabletop Simulator on Steam is another excellent choice for playing niche board games like Red Dragon Inn. It offers extensive mod support, allowing you to find almost any board game [5:4]
[5:5].
Additional Options
For mobile users, Game Pigeon on iPhone allows you to play games like Battleship and Beer Pong via text [2:2]. Skribbl.io offers a Pictionary-like experience where players draw and guess words
[2:1].
These platforms and games provide a range of options for playing board games online with friends, accommodating different group sizes and preferences. Whether you're looking for strategic games or light-hearted party games, there's something available for everyone.
Hi, just wondering if anyone could suggest an online boardgame that could be played in a span of atleast 10-30 minutes and be able to accomodate 5-12 people, Something that has easy mechanics and would be fun to play it online messenger / teams / discord. Hopefully free also or atleast just the host could buy
Something like scrabble / snake and ladder / quiz types / card games / uno / skribbl / gartic phone
If you don't mind using another platform, check out Board Game Arena (https://boardgamearena.com/). There are games like Saboteur, Just one, Welcome to or even The Werewolves of Millers Hollow that take +5 players.
I would also add Secret moon but I think its max 8 people and chatting during the game could ruin it, it's very fun nonetheless
iirc it goes up to 9 with the thief extra character or something?
but yeah i love secret moon but it's really brought down by the fact that you can't be very social while playing it.
Doesn't Codenames have a free website to use?
Decrypto does as well (more of a learning curve there, but fun with a regular group)
I think there may be a Just One clone floating out there online somewhere too.
Codenames was a big hit with my office.
Yes it does as well as several other party games can be found online pretty easily.
Codenames: https://codenames.game/
Netgames.io has several games online including Codewords, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, spyfall, Secret Sith, Avalon, Love letter, and Enigma. https://netgames.io/games/
You can try the Jackbox games and stream them, people can join via browser or phone.
Jack box is the answer! There are like 4-6 games in that bundle.
Drawful is the best game, I think it can support 8 players.
During covid a friend screen-shared jackbox and we used the code on our mobile devices to join remotely using the game code.
This would be my suggestion, Wavelength. They have an app that is supposed to be pretty good.
lol @ "supposed"
I like how you can play this game remotely from everyone, but it's easy to for someone to have their voice go unheard if someone is a bit too dominating over the dial.
I like game pigeon. It’s an app on the iPhone. You and your friends smdownload it and you can play games like battleship, beer pong, and a bunch of other games via text.
Dominion online. It's an engine builder card game that's incredibly fun and has a ton of different playstyles. There are so many different decks to use so each game is a little bit different
My favorite 3 so far are:
horsepaste.com - this is Codenames, a 2-team game where team captains have to get their team to guess their 'codewords' using 1-word clues.
https://skribbl.io/ - this is similar to Pictionary, but every person for themselves. You get points for guessing the correct answer (the faster you guess, the more points) and when people guess your drawing correctly.
https://swellgarfo.com/scattergories/ - this is Scattergories, where you race against the clock to find words that start with the randomized letter and correspond to the categories.
What do you guys play?
Fuck thanks for the Scattergories link! Loved that game as a kid
I bought tabletop simulator and it's amazing
>tabletop simulator
i'm going to look it up, thank you!
I did a quick search and haven't found exactly what I'm looking for and my time is limited so any help would be greatly appreciated. I normally play old school board games with my sons (checkers, chess, Monopoly, Parcheesi, etc.) but I'm an ICU nurse where Covid-19 is active and my sons are quarantined with their grandmother a few hours away in a rural area. They have Chromebooks that they can use, but they belong to the school so downloading isn't really an option. Also, with rural internet, lower data transfer requirements are better, if possible. I've found Webopoly so far and will be trying that today. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and be safe!
Also, my reddit skills are a bit lackluster, so if this should have been posted elsewhere or differently, please let me know.
https://netgames.io/games/ with Love Letter being my favorite game but you'll have to look instructions of the game first since its a little more complex yet easy on internet
https://colonist.io/ Settlers of Catan on web, 3-4 players go to *create* and put settings
playingcards.io lets you play some games there and custom your own card games (and if you want upload photos and more and create a card game you already know) everything that happens on your screen will happen on theirs so calling out turns will be important
http://coup.thebrown.net/# idk if you know how to play coup...
https://skribbl.io/ create a private room and draw
Thanks!
boardgamearena.com has a pretty good selection, and you don't need to pay to use (paid premium does have some perks). I only found out about it a couple days ago, but I'm liking it so far.
Good deal. I'll try taking a look tonight. Thank you for your help!
First of all, thank you for your service to your community. Your sacrifices are recognized and appreciated. Thank you. Stay safe.
Many of the online services are overwhelmed because of high demand. I am unsure which of them have the traditional games you listed. I will look around today during my free time and update you on my findings.
My go to service has been Boardgamearena.com. Nothing needs to be downloaded and it should work decently on slower internet connections. As long as your kid's school doesn't block the domain you should be good. Now for the bad. The last time I checked they were blocking access to new users or free accounts. Only premium users have been able to log in. Premium accounts are relatively inexpensive, but not sure if you're able to swing that cost.
I hope others here have some suggestions. There may be posts on r/boardgames that cover this topic. And they have such a larger audience over there.
Best of luck to you.
Awesome, thanks for your help! I'll check out the boardgamearena.com site. I have never managed a website, but I'm assuming that increased traffic during the outbreak is costly on their end, so I wouldn't mind having to pay for a good site.
I'll check out the other link as well later this week. Thanks again!
Tabletopia has some of those games.
Sweet, I'll check that out as well! Thanks!
Jackbox? It's a pack of part games. You can host it and they only need a phone or tablet to play along with you
Do you need to see what's on the tv screen though?
Who ever hosts it can screen share with everyone else. That's what my buddies and I did. We skyped and the host put it up on the screen so that we could see it and then we all connected in without phones. I know some people stream it on facebook live too
I've gotten into Mahjong lately.
Is there an app or website where you can play against other humans?
Backgammon
Chess for cognitive benefits.
Scrabble.
Chess
for example the red dragon in or king of Tokyo or Carcassonne or some other niche but fun board games that in the time that I do have to spare I could play without stressing too much about finding people to play it with
As already suggested, board game arena is the way to go.
Board game arena is good if you want a variety of games, but most games in there I wouldn't recommend on a phone. For playing on your phone there are some games with specific apps like codenames and railroad ink
Tabletop Simulator on Steam. The workshop has everything I’ve looked for.
Tabletop sim for sure, I've literally played red dragon inn there
I assume you didn't know about Board Game Arena? Now you know. They don't have Red Dragon Inn, but they have a bunch of others (including King of Tokyo and Carcassonne).
This is the way!
I recently discovered this website called boardgamearena which has a ton of board games you can play online and has an amazing UI as well. I do like to attend in person board game events/meetups but sometimes I just don't want to spend 1.5-2 hours of my day stuck in traffic
The reasons I enjoy playing board games:-
I love strategy, social deduction games where there are multiple ways to win and I get to use my brain. So, repeatedly playing board games I like to get better at them (Splendor, Viticulture, Azul are a few of them on the top of my list)
I like to explore and try out new board games so that I can purchase the ones I liked physically some day.
An easy way to network and nerd out.
The networking part is the only one that is not possible while playing board games online with randoms. Hence, I was wondering if there are other people here that play online/virtually and love to explore out new board games online.
Not sure if it's your speed given the games you mentioned, but I'm part of a Discord community that plays lightweight games over video chat on Ludio (ludio.gg). Daily game nights with 10+ people every night. The networking/socializing is the focus though, not the games. And they don't do heavy board games at all - they do card games (trick-taking, card shedding), party games, social deduction games, push-your-luck games, etc.
Lots of games being organized in the Dads On A Map discord, if you're into heavier stuff like 18xx and Splotter.
I'm on a group that does several events over the week. We currently have events on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. We're called Gamewaves.
Feel free to come check us out!
Ooooh if there is a discord count me in too!
Me tooooo
You could try playing board games over Tabletop simulator (TTS) and use one of the discord channels associated with it. Make friends and build your own group through meeting people on these. Difference with TTS is that you can chat to the people you're playing against. All the below use TTS.
Some discord board game channels; Main TTS - https://discord.gg/ttsclub-90897972715352064

Hey!
Me and some university friends are now living in different cities. Before we liked to play board games together.
Do you have any suggestions on games that feel like a board game, but that is played online?
Board Game Arena has an astonishing number of games implemented for free. Hop on your own voice chat together and play stuff!
The civ games can do what you ask if you don't mind spending hours playing it
Sunderfolk
Tabletop simulator! The steam workshop is stacked with board games both common are rarer ones and you can import your own pics and 3D models if there’s something more specific
Jackbox is also really fun, there’s some more intense competitive games but some chill ones as well. There’s such a variety across the packs look into the games in each and hop into streams to see them being played. I would try pick these up in a sale though, they’re not the cheapest but your friends might be willing to split :)
My family has always enjoyed playing games together. Games like 7 Wonders, Puerto Rico, Dominion, and Catan. Over the years, we've all grown up and spread out. Now we've got people living in Washington, Virginia, and Georgia.
I'd love to re-instate family board game night, but using an online service where we can all play together at once. What sites do you guys like? Free options are a plus, but simple UI and a SFW environment are also important since this is a family thing.
Suggestions? I'm aware of things like boardgamearena and tabletopia but don't know much about them.
Thanks everyone. I think we will give one of free suggestions (I'll test boardgamearena and tabletopia ) a try first, and if the idea is a success I'll recommend tabletop simulator. Not everyone has a steam account, but I can help set that up.
I appreciate everyone's input, thanks for your responses!
If you want free, check out Board Game Arena.
If you want mind spending a few bucks, check out Tabletop Simulator.
What makes family board games fun is the socializing as much as the playing games. Tabletopia and Tabletop Simulator are good ways to play games, they don’t have good ways to talk to each other. You will need to do FaceTime or some other online video chat to get that level of interaction.
Tabletopia can be played with just one person paying as opposed to TS where everyone needs the game. Tabletopia also has a iPad app so that’s a plus for families playing together.
TS has pretty much every game if you look so it has that going for it.
One more thing both of these are just basically the board game on the screen. They don’t do any of the math for you or help you play at all. They are just a simulation of the games. It can be frustrating moving bits around on the screen so I would try it out before trying to get everyone involved.
Tabletopia has a lot of games which are totally free and nobody has to pay. And you can play it in a Browser. Which might come in handy when you don’t want to install steam and all that. But the controls are better in TS IMO
or just play on BoardGameArena which has in game chat, full game management/scoring, some great graphics (game developer dependant) and many games don't need anyone to pay a dime (unless you're trying to play from the same IP as they try to reduce cheating so that you can't play against yourself to up your rankings)
Tabletop Simluator has almost every game for free.
A lot of games have online play through an app
Tabletop simulator hands down
I recently discovered this website called boardgamearena which has a ton of board games you can play online and has an amazing UI as well. I know there are a lot of in person board game events/meetups that happen in Bangalore every weekend and I have been to plenty of them but sometimes I just don't want to spend 1.5-2 hours of my day stuck in traffic. Also if you are going and paying for attending a meetup you would want to spend several hours to get a bang for your buck.
The reasons I enjoy playing board games:-
The networking part is the only one that is not possible while playing board games online with randoms. Hence, I was wondering if there are other people here that play online or would like to try playing online while talking on some video/audio calling app. I have a mini collection of 15 games so we can play in person too once in a while.
Feel free to comment/DM if you are interested. I would love to know what your favorite game is and what do you like the most about it.
Most of them I don't know, or not able to recog by the fancy names
Which all games do you know of or have played before?
Ludo Chess Business Few board games which I used to made myself with custom rules
Any games that offer some card / item collecting dynamic and also have great social features and team based play and not just where I’m solo battling against one person or doing solo campaigns.
Also down for any other suggestions here of social games that I might not have heard of pref ones where I’d make online friends and there’s a learning curve cool with paying for an app.
Major bonus points for styles of games I’ve never heard of before that are online co-op of some kind.
Thanks!
Hearthstone’s Battlegrounds comes to mind. It had two game modes last time I played: 1vs8, and a “duo” mode with four teams of 2 players each.
You don’t collect cards in Battlegrounds though. And while you can chat with friends in-game, it’s probably not a great game for making friends? (I haven’t tried really)
