Turn-Based Strategy Games
For those interested in turn-based strategy games, several options stand out. "Through the Ages," "Tzolkin," "Terra Mystica," and "Race for the Galaxy" are board game adaptations available on platforms like Boardgamearena [1:1]. Additionally, "The Battle of Polytopia" is a mobile game that offers a deceptively simple yet engaging multiplayer experience
[1:2],
[3:1]. "Battle for Wesnoth" is another free-to-play option praised for its tactical depth, although it lacks modern graphics
[2:2].
Real-Time Strategy (RTS) and 4X Games
For fans of RTS and 4X games, "Starcraft 2" remains a popular choice with its free-to-play multiplayer mode [2:2]. The "Civilization" series, particularly "Civilization V" and "Civilization VI," offer extensive online PvP experiences
[1:4],
[5:1]. These games allow players to build empires and compete or cooperate with friends over extended sessions.
Classic and Nostalgic Picks
Some classic games continue to have dedicated communities and are worth exploring. "Heroes of Might and Magic III" is still played today, often requiring third-party sites for online play [1:7]. "Warcraft 3" has seen a resurgence in popularity, particularly among younger players, with active 3v3 lobbies
[4:3],
[4:6].
Unique Multiplayer Experiences
"MyHordes" offers a unique cooperative multiplayer experience where players must work together to survive zombie attacks by strategically managing resources [4:1]. Another interesting title is "Wargroove," which combines elements of tactical combat with a charming art style
[5:1].
Affordable and Free Options
For those on a budget, "Epicinium" is a free online turn-based strategy game available on Steam [2:1]. "Ticket to Ride" and "Carcassonne" are also affordable digital board games that provide enjoyable multiplayer experiences
[3:5]. These games often go on sale, making them accessible to a wide audience.
These recommendations cover a range of preferences, from classic titles to innovative new games, ensuring there's something for every strategy enthusiast.
Hi all
I've played hearthstone and Gwent for a bit. Although I liked Gwent better it's still just completely unbalanced. If you want to win you have to play a certain way with certain cards.
I guess that's the meta but I'm really over it.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it!
There's a mobile game called The Battle of Polytopia. It's deceptively simple, and it's multiplayer.
There's a bunch of board game adaptations that fit the bill. Boardgamearena is a good free site for it. Id recommend Through the Ages, Tzolkin, Terra Mystica, and Race for the Galaxy.
There's app versions of many as well, Terraforming Mars is great!
Nice thanks! Do enough people play these games where I can find a match quickly?
Varies by game, but boardgamearena has been super active since the world shut down. They have live and async game modes as well
Civilization V has given me a lot of online PvP fun, and many long nights.
Why not XCOM? The multiplayer is only turn-by-turn
Why not XCOM? Idk lol never heard of it I'll look it up now thanks!
Xcom, Xcom 2 , Xcom Chimera squad , and The Long War mods are sure to keep you busy....God damn that mod.
I’m probably gonna sound like a broken record, but... Heroes of Might and Magic III. There is a good reason, or rather a bunch of em, that people play it to this day, including finding ways to play online. You will require some third party site to play MP through, yes, but considering tournaments are played with the same setup, it’s most likely worth it.
Ok I did some research, it does look just a bit dated. Out of curiosity, why not play VII?
Dated doesn’t even begin to describe it lol, the original game (before expansions) was released in 1999!
III is universally considered the best installment in the whole series. In particular, when comparing it to VII, the older one has a lot of advantages: VII is a buggy mess that was barely finished and its development was terminated abruptly, it was a surprise that even one expansion saw the light of day; it has super high system requirements but barely has anything to show for it; it has much weaker unit diversity (7 playable factions vs 9 in III); it is slower paced due to several factors, making it less suitable for multiplayer matches; it is more complicated in several places (skill learning, combat turn order for example) that a lot of OG players found unnecessary. I could probably bring up some more examples, but the bottom line is, because of those many reasons, the player base for III is substantially bigger today than it is for any other installment.
Personally, I disagree with some of those points, my personal favorite installment in the series is V which has many mechanics VII also has and III doesn’t. But I know for a fact that I’ll have a much harder time finding someone to play V with (which I don’t have time for anyway, can’t afford to sit 3+ hours with no interruptions) than I would if I wanted to play III.
So, long story short, after playing some games for a long time, we´re looking for a new one to play with my friends, specifically a strategy based one.
I don´t mind if it is RTS, Turn based, 4X... As long as it is somewhat easy to get into (I do play some Age of Empires II and III myself, but its hard for newcomers to get into these RTS, having to learn build orders and such...).
I would appreciate it if they were Free to Play or one of these kind of games that you often see dirt cheap on Steam for sale, though its not by all means necessary , just suggest away.
Thanks for your help.
Starcraft 2 multiplayer is free to play and it's an amazing game.
Battle For Wesnoth is turn based and also free to play (it's FOSS in fact), and it's pretty great though not as visually pleasing.
Hades Star, VERY long term game though. There are great tutorials for AoE 2 DE and you dont really need build orders to play well and have fun
Homeworld is a great game and often on sale sometimes up to 85% off. You could also try one of the older Civilization games like Civ4 if you want a cheaper option (Cheaper than the newer Civ games) If your group of friends are in a budget, although they are good games, I would advise against games by paradox is their business model includes releasing alot of DLC through the games lifetime
Epicinium is a pretty good free online turn based strategy game- Battle for Wesnor is another one. Recommending both!
Edit: Can find the former on steam and the latter on its own site I believe
Hello Everyone!
As the title suggests, I am looking for turn based strategy games to play with friends online.
To be precise, I want to play with my friends :-
Looking for games similar to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (that can be played with friends), AOE 3 (create town/base and army) OR board games OR war tactics etc.
Battle of Polytopia. A mini 4X game. Really fun for a good amount of time, even against bots. Basic tribes are free, but you have to buy a dlc tribe (1€ for the cheapest) to play online. Which is ridiculously cheap for the quality of the game.
Thanks, I have played Battle of Polytopia and Hexonia. The problem here is that I am broke af and can't really pay for full version, is there any workaround to get full version?
I have also played Ancient Empire Reloaded however the graphics are a bit old school.
The only "woraround" for Battle of Polytopia is pass&play. But as said the cheapest tribes are 1€, which is acceptable even if one is broke. After you bought one tribe you can play multiplayer as much as you want.
You're in luck, polytopia only makes you pay per tribe. You can play for free, or if you want to play with your friend you only need to buy one tribe and the game is easily worth that. I think the cheapest tribe is $2
I can't think of any game like FFT on android that has multiplayer
But you can use PPSSPP emulator with online play enabled to play FFT WotL PSP version, it has multiplayer mode but just single battles, not story coop or anything
Ticket To ride is really good, in a 4ppl lobby, carcassonne also good little slow, underlords prettt fun, kinda dead gsme no updates but still fun with friends
Been forever, so maybe someone can confirm or correct me, but Uniwar might fit your criteria
Thanks,I will try Uniwar and report back.
Chess
Let me know what are your favourite games! Your favourite game is not included? Type it in the comments below!
Also how does a strategy game list exist without either of the starcrafts on it? Be real.
I've also enjoyed tempest rising, broken arrow, and terminator a lot which aren't on this list. Warcraft 3 is surging in popularity with young players right now. 3v3 lobbies are mostly new players in WC3.
Wow, wc3 is making a comeback? I'll have to check it out
Gonna have to restart my Compaq computer and re install the Wc3 and Wc3: Frozen Throne discs and log in to Battle.net.
Starcraft 1 (remastered)
MyHordes is a multiplayer game where 40 players work together to survive in a town under constant threat from zombies. Each day, players have a limited number of actions. Towns typically last several days, and success depends on strategic resource gathering, building essential structures, and carefully managing water, food, and other supplies.
Available in English, German, French and Spanish.

I played a bunch of online android games but I always rage quit when I get repeating losses due to lags, but I still play online strategy games since they don't require the connection to be that good, so do you have any online strategy game that isn't a pay to win? Maybe we can play a game together since I got nobody to play with.
What games have you played? There are many online games. As for the classic 5v5 MOBA, I would say that Honor of Kings is the best, then there are other styles such as CoC, iGP Manager, Souls, Brawlhalla, Brawl Stars, Chess, CoD Mobile, PUBG Mobile or Legends of Runeterra.
I've played most of these and got bored because most of them are not that good when you're playing solo, and I always play solo sadly
Now, I know it first-hand because it happens to me too haha, it's difficult to find good games that you have fun with, and more competitive online strategy games are my favorites. I could mention the typical Clash Royale but I got bored or Fall Guys, Afk Journey, there are many. Now I'm only playing Football Agent, I've gotten addicted to it, it's very cool, Exoracer from time to time, a bit of Brawl Stars and some CoC (I play these last two from time to time, I leave it and then I play again). In the end it's a matter of taste but I'm the same as you, there is nothing that really hooks me, when Honor of Kings came out I went into it very hard and got to GM, but I left it as time went by, maybe I'll come back.
Please share your own
I'm looking for a strategic game for a while. I've already tried CoC, RoK, AoT3 and many others. As a student, I don't have possibilities to practice strategic skills in real life. So I'd like to have an experience in mobile/computer games. But all the games I tried are actually not strategic. They can offer only simplistic war(training troops and beating enemy) and basic economics(collecting resources from factories).
Is there really good game about leadership with complex politics, war and economics?
Real strategic thinking in video games? Go into 4x strategies. Start with Master of Orion for example, then ascend towards Stellaris, Europa Universalis and Distant Worlds 2. Only this type of games (seriously macro, "open system", complex, sometimes even non-linear etc.) train mental facilities close to proper strategic thinking applicable in real-world contexts.
Slay the Spire.
You have to deal with RNGesus, Bird Cultists, and worst of all, your own dumbass, short-sighted decisions.
You'll learn how to plan ahead. You'll learn how to optimize your ratios. You'll learn how to adapt and "lean-in" to a situation rather than forcing a narrative that just won't work. You'll learn a lot about order of operations & causality. You'll learn less about negotiation, but more about how to weigh options and make a rational choice. But you'll screw that choice up time and time again, chasing some shiny object or even worse, chasing hope. You'll learn how to identify synergies.
If that doesn't do it for you, UnCiv is a mobile version of Civ 5.
Europa Universalis 4. Loved it, entered me into the world of Grand Strategy games. You run an empire from 1444 till 1821.
You build relationships with empires, call in favours befriend those that may protect you, especially as a small nation. Economic goals, trade power, embargo’s, inflation and corruption. Territorial aspect, war or through political means. There’s more than this, but main points.
However when it comes to skills that can be applied, as someone now working in a COO team idk how transferable these would be to be honest with you. I use to be a heavy gamer and still try when I get the time. But I can’t name a game that can help you practice skills that can be applied in real life. General strategy is best and for that thought process of thinking ahead I’d say chess will do the job.
I’d also recommend Victoria, which is more economy and politics based.
However a lot of paradox games are significantly better with DLCs and they can get expensive with those. There is a bit of learning curve with them but from the sounds of it you’d enjoy that.
That sounds great. I definitely have to try it.
Surprisingly, arma reforger.
It’s a sandbox, not everyone plays it super strategically, but to some extent it’s basically game theory the game.
Otherwise chess
Try Twilight Imperium 4th edition with the prophecy of kings expansion. It’s a board game not a video game, but there’s a free version on discord and has a steep learning curve. It’s better in person but is quite time consuming.
Lots of good stuff in there like making decisions with imperfect information, allocating resources efficiently, trading and transacting with rivals, long term planning vs short term gains, and lots of fun ways to get distracted from the true end goal
+1 Board and card games could last OP a few millennia
Never heard but I'll try it. Thank you
As my flair says - AoE 2 and 3.
Games where you build a city/village, and play online against other players, invading their city/villages looking for resources and stuff.
How about this? Northgard https://apps.apple.com/ru/app/northgard/id1533979882
Hades star is pretty deep.
My latest obsession is play.stateofsurvival.net give it a try
Awhile ago I made a post asking what people that were the hardest single player strategy games and I got a lot of good recommendations. Now I'm asking what people think is the hottest/best Multiplayer in a strategy game right now?
I specify CURRENT games because I personally feel games like star craft and supreme commander are well renowned but are a little dated.
If you're into chess games you could check out Godsbane. It's a 1v1 strategy game:
Best is entirely subjective. Also what genre are you looking for? For rts, Starcraft 1 and 2, Warcraft 3, Company of Heroes 2, Supreme Commander, Dawn of War 2 Elite mod, Age of Empires 4 and 3 and 2 all have active player bases and are excellent.
Any genre. I have played all those except one of the sequels and warcraft 3. Just looking for something fresh and multiplayer.
Steel Division 2, great RTS
Thats a good idea. I have steel division normandy 44 and really liked it.
My top teir list in order: Hearts of Iron 4 Crusader kings 3 Wargame: Red dragon Door Kickers 2 Victoria 2
All amazing in my opinion but can also just depend on the mood or tast
