Board Game Arena
For those looking for a variety of card and board games to play against real people, Board Game Arena is a recommended platform. It hosts published board games online, allowing you to play in real-time or turn-based modes with friends or other players. The platform offers both free access and a premium subscription option, the latter mainly for starting 'premium' games [1:1].
Popular Digital Card Games
Several digital card games are frequently mentioned across discussions as popular choices for multiplayer gameplay. Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering Arena, and Marvel Snap are widely recommended due to their engaging mechanics and large player bases [1:2]
[1:3]
[3:3]. Magic: The Gathering Arena is particularly noted for its extensive history and well-built mobile version
[1:3].
Team-Based and Social Features
If you’re interested in games that offer team-based play and social features, Hearthstone’s Battlegrounds mode allows for duo play with teams of two players each [2:1]. While not primarily designed for making friends, it provides a social aspect through in-game chat.
Custom Card Games
For playing custom card games with friends, Tabletop Simulator is suggested as a versatile tool. It allows users to create custom decks by re-texturing cards, although it may require some technical setup [4:1]. Unfortunately, there aren't many free websites that facilitate easy customization of digital cards
[4:3].
Unique and Lesser-Known Options
Some unique card games worth exploring include Elder Scrolls Legends and Teppen, which offer different gameplay styles compared to mainstream options [5:2]. Additionally, Slay the Spire and Shadowverse provide interesting twists on traditional card game mechanics, such as evolving characters and strategic deck-building
[5:3].
These recommendations should help you find an enjoyable online multiplayer card game to play with friends, whether you're looking for competitive strategy, cooperative play, or creative customization.
Just looking for a good card game (or something similar) where you play against other people and use strategy. For example Hearthstone, Magic the Gathering, Gwent, etc. Which would you recommend?
All platforms, but preferably PC or mobile.
I play Hearthstone and Legends of elysium - you can try
Best mobile games I’ve played:
Star Realm Magic Arena Pokemon TCG
Best I’ve been recommended quite often: Marvel snap.
Personally I point everyone at Magic arena. Magic has 30 years of history and the mobile game is extreme well built with amazing tutorial. There’s multiple formats and plenty of ways to play for free or buy more tokens if that’s not an issue for you.
I've been playing Marvel Snap recently, not really something to sit down and play for hours but good for killing a few minutes here and there. I think some of the Yu-Gi-Oh games might have multiplayer but I'm not 100% sure. There's also Magic the Gathering Arena
Armello
You should look into Board Game Arena. It's an online board game hosting website that lets you play published board games with real people online in either real time or turn order, for free. There is a premium subscription option but that mostly just grants you the ability to start a 'premium' game and then wait for players. But you can join any game regardless of premium status or not, and at least 60% of the games aren't considered premium which means you can start those at any time.
And these aren't schlocky flash games made specifically for the website, these are classic board games known and loved throughout the world. Wingspan, Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, Splendor, Clank!, Patchwork, etc. BGA currently has over 400 games available to play and their collection keeps growing every month. BGA also works on both PC and mobile devices.
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll look into it (:
Any games that offer some card / item collecting dynamic and also have great social features and team based play and not just where I’m solo battling against one person or doing solo campaigns.
Also down for any other suggestions here of social games that I might not have heard of pref ones where I’d make online friends and there’s a learning curve cool with paying for an app.
Major bonus points for styles of games I’ve never heard of before that are online co-op of some kind.
Thanks!
Hearthstone’s Battlegrounds comes to mind. It had two game modes last time I played: 1vs8, and a “duo” mode with four teams of 2 players each.
You don’t collect cards in Battlegrounds though. And while you can chat with friends in-game, it’s probably not a great game for making friends? (I haven’t tried really)
What digital card games have you been playing, and what do you think of it?
Feel free to share your thoughts and use this community thread to ask questions, seek suggestions, give recommendations, discuss, or share anything else related to r/DigitalCards and games!
Marvel Snap has been what I’ve played the most since it released on iOS, but as of the last few weeks I’ve played less and less and now it’s been a few days. They need to do something major or they’ve probably lost me. A draft mode would be amazing.
Other than that, I fell back to Monster Train. But I’ve burned out on that again, too. Currently look for a new card game. Roguelike, CCG, whatever. Preferably Switch or IOS.
Find anything? I'm about to go back to PvZ Heroes and collect what I don't have
Been playing Marvel Snap daily and Legends of Runeterra a few days a week for the vault. These are still the top tier card games currently on the market imo.
Yeah it’s the only 2 I played these days
Breach Wanderers just hit 1.0 and is a solid alternative to Slay the Spire. Mobile and PC. Cross save progress.
I fell out of normal TCG’s and CCG’s after they announced Gwent was going into maintenance mode :(
try out Bonez. its a roguelite-ish card game based on blackjack (21) with betting and power cards.. really fun
zoombies.world/bonez
MTG Arena, playing F2P and having fun with it. Only way I'd do MTG again (much cheaper). Card dealing algorithm is whacky, but still best MTG digital version around, & its def kplayable.
No other CCG can match the number of cards.
I want to play online with custom cards with friends online but don't know where or how to do it. So if anyone know a website please tell me.
Thanks!
I think you're stuck playing via webcam then.
even if the cards are digital?
Yes, there is no online option I'm aware of that you can add your own cards to easily.
If you're looking for help with your card's authenticity check out r/RealOrNotTCG (card verification, edition info, scams, tampering, fakes, etc)! If you're looking for pricing help check out Card Kingdom and TCGplayer for North American markets and cardmarket for European markets. Ebay and Amazon are not reliable sources for pricing info. If you're looking for something else you may disregard this message!

Best bet for ease of use probably tabletop sim. Should be able to re-texture cards and then toss them together and save the deck as a whole inside a container pretty easy.
I can't think of any free websites or anything that'd let you do it otherwise in a way that's not insanely jank
So there have been quite a few Online Card games made in the past few years. Some were original properties, some are based on others, and some were Hearthstone. But some stand out above the rest I think. Whether it be through quality, mechanics, aesthetics, branding, sound design, or other what not everyone has their own favorite.
My personal favorite is Elder Scrolls Legends... a game that I see next to no one ever y’all about. Elder Scrolls Legends is a game much like Hearthstone where you put together a deck, classes, and try to defeat the enemy by striking them down. But it’s rather interesting in that while your class/portrait mainly helps you get racial cards you want your actual deck is composed of what ATRRIBUTES you choose. Do you want a Mana heavy Willpower deck? Agility and Strength? You can do that and make some bizarre working combinations!
And things get a bit lore difficult where you have to defend and get through two different lanes, so if One lane is open you can be attacked. Sometimes the second lane is normal and other times it will have special rules in that will make the match all that much harder. It is also the only online card game I know of that actually has a full on STORY to tell that ties into it’s main series that diverges based on your actions.
But what about the rest of y’all? What is your favorite online TTC and why? What makes it stand out above the rest in your head?
I used to play a shitload of Hearthstone, but I fell off for... various reasons. After listening to the most recent podcast, I've started playing Teppen, and honestly I'm a fan so far. I'm less than a week in right now, but there's something about the flow of the game (and also the fact that I get to play the #1 Firey Boi) that really speaks to me.
Does Slay the Spire count? That game is too good, though it could use some attack animations.
Shadowverse had some highs and some really steep lows in its time, but it was probably the one I've had the most fun with. I'm always into evolving (form changes) characters in games and big top end cards; SV always had those. SV's main twist on the Hearthstone formula is you can "evolve" 1 of your creatures 2 or 3 times per match. Usually evolving gives +2/+2 and the ability to attack other creatures immediately, but it can also give a lot of other effects. Most decks were made around a playset of legendary or high cost cards because the power level on cards past 5 mana were exponential; serious bullshit blazing. I haven't played in over a year though, so it could be straight garbage again.
The only thing with Slay the Spire is that I feel like my runs are feast or famine with how strong they are. That could be me just being trash tho idk.
I feel like the rogue/green character suffers that aspect the most. Going for the really independent archetypes like all powers on robo/blue or defense on warrior/red can result in the same.
I guess arena by default since I'm an MTG mark, but I have several problems with arena both technically and conceptually. I don't play anything else.
YGO Pro all day
How much online? For F2P, browser-only play, there is Card Hunter, each game is a different DnD session's monster encounter, over a variety of tilesets/terrains. You mix'n'match your group (warrior/priest/wizard) your races (human/elf/dwarf) and especially your gear (each different gear piece gives you pre-determined cards that fill your deck, and make your characters play very differently).
another fully F2P, and done being updated, browser-only game is Elements. It is like Magic, but it does have a trainer mode if you just want to putz around and see how good your theory-crafting actually is
I want to pick up a new pvp card game but i feel like all the big names are a bit of a miss Master duel is stuck in a horrible meta The bazaar is extremely consumer unfriendly hearthstone's meta and monetization sucks so much ass
is there a card game that has an online client (doesn't have to have the level of polish like master duel) that's worth picking up? thanks!
I went back to Teppen and it's been a lot of fun. 33 sets upon return scared me (34th coming in October), but I've spent exactly zero dollars and I've made huge inroads into several sets and have six top tier decks already.
Not sure how they actually make money.
Dominion is a deck building game, but it’s free on steam with ranked pvp. There is paid dlc, but it looks like you don’t need it.
Warpforge and Legions if you're into Warhammer If you're okay with playing a fan made project with online support then I can suggest one piece tcg sim, where all cards are free and updates are regular
One piece sim is fun but unofficial,
Ranked bounty add on by another dev too
Putting in a vote to check out Draconis 8. It’s online, in beta right now.
Every booster is a a full playable deck. Accessible, fast, tactical. Endless card pool to explore / collect but also not required to win.
The main issue is that arena doesn't have all the cards id like to use and I do not have a computer currently. I have an iPad and an android phone. Any ideas?
If you own physical cards, there is also Spelltable. Works with phone cameras.
Another option would be Tabletop Simulator, if you want more of a board gaming vibe than on Untap.
I'm traveling and I forgot to bring my cards, felt dumb for that. Tabletop simulator costs money last I checked but I still might try it anyway
Oh, in that case, I'm sure the other options will do just fine.
And yeah, if there are time constraints, Tabletop Simulator isn't a great option. If you can wait for a Steam sale, it's a cheap one-time purchase.
I find it hard to believe Arena doesn't have what you are looking for. Try making a deck using 'historic' format. That should give you access to all the cards that Arena has to offer. I found all my Illusion cards from 10 years ago. Haven't made the deck yet as it will burn out all my wildcards.
Arena does have some fun stuff but not everything. I recently got very into making decks on moxfield and found a lot of new stuff
If you’re trying to play commander? Arena absolutely does not have everything you’d want. Multiplayer and they also just do not have every card:/ idk what to tell you
I did just discover untap.in, is it reliable?
I had a lot of fun with untap! Give it a go!
I haven't gotten into a lot of those things. I am an older player and learned how to play by what I had. We didn't have the resources back then that we do now. I can look online and tailor a deck for what I want, but there is no fun in that.
I wonder if cockatrice do support android, you can check on the cockatrice GitHub maybe
Kinda motivated with the return of buddyfight in Vanguard so actually trying to play the game again (but as a Kid I don't actually own the card and they are not in stock in local stores now so I usually resort to online client)
Area and untap
Buddyfight? Untap
Never really played card games but it's something I've always been curious to check out.

Open to anything really but obviously something friendly to beginners would be ideal.
Also, I have no interest in playing Hearthstone.
EDIT: I said 'OFFLINE' but I meant, play in real life with actual friends and cards that you buy
Try "Star Realms" - there is free demo on steam I think? demo allows you to play offline or with AI and one mission from custom scenario. It's sci-fi themed if it's important.
Damn I need to reword my post. Obviously I was not clear, by offline I meant In Real Life with actual cards and friends at a table. Ill edit my post description
Maybe I was unclear - Those are physical cards to play, but that demo on steam would allow you to check them out for free, before spending money on deck.
In fact you can play with physical cards as well as playing offline electronically:
https://www.starrealms.com/
Magic: The Gathering isn't exactly friendly to beginners but in my opinion its the best card game there is. The online client Magic Arena came out recently and the tutorial in it is pretty good for new players.
'Card games' is an extremely broad category. The grand-daddy of card games is Magic: The Gathering (mentioned by Indigo_), which is an excellent game with some online versions available as well. But it is fundamentally quite similar to Hearthstone (or rather Hearthstone ripped off Magic pretty hard), so it might not be to your taste. I would say that it has a lot more depth (and complexity) than Hearthstone, but that doesn't really help when you're a beginner.
There's also a whole genre of board games called 'deckbuilders', which are essentially card games where you expand and customise your deck of cards as you play, such as Star Realms (as mentioned by Mjollnir5) and Dominion. Some also have other elements, such as a game board and pieces, so are not pure card games as such. Some of these games (such as Star Realms) have digital versions available, but many more can be played online using {Tabletop Simulator}. If you want to play both irl and online I highly recommend checking it out.

I recently discovered this website called boardgamearena which has a ton of board games you can play online and has an amazing UI as well. I do like to attend in person board game events/meetups but sometimes I just don't want to spend 1.5-2 hours of my day stuck in traffic
The reasons I enjoy playing board games:-
I love strategy, social deduction games where there are multiple ways to win and I get to use my brain. So, repeatedly playing board games I like to get better at them (Splendor, Viticulture, Azul are a few of them on the top of my list)
I like to explore and try out new board games so that I can purchase the ones I liked physically some day.
An easy way to network and nerd out.
The networking part is the only one that is not possible while playing board games online with randoms. Hence, I was wondering if there are other people here that play online/virtually and love to explore out new board games online.
You could try playing board games over Tabletop simulator (TTS) and use one of the discord channels associated with it. Make friends and build your own group through meeting people on these. Difference with TTS is that you can chat to the people you're playing against. All the below use TTS.
Some discord board game channels; Main TTS - https://discord.gg/ttsclub-90897972715352064
Eclipse https://discord.gg/PQPJbTXm
Coin games https://discord.gg/9NFcJyMp
Wherligig https://discord.gg/HDmHAYw7
Leder games https://discord.gg/woodland-warriors-476234833572397056
I'm on a group that does several events over the week. We currently have events on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. We're called Gamewaves.
Feel free to come check us out!
Lots of games being organized in the Dads On A Map discord, if you're into heavier stuff like 18xx and Splotter.
Ooooh if there is a discord count me in too!
Me tooooo
Not sure if it's your speed given the games you mentioned, but I'm part of a Discord community that plays lightweight games over video chat on Ludio (ludio.gg). Daily game nights with 10+ people every night. The networking/socializing is the focus though, not the games. And they don't do heavy board games at all - they do card games (trick-taking, card shedding), party games, social deduction games, push-your-luck games, etc.
