TL;DR
Carrier Throttling and De-Prioritization
One of the primary reasons for slow mobile data speeds can be throttling or de-prioritization by your carrier. T-Mobile, for example, doesn't throttle but may de-prioritize certain services like home internet compared to cellular networks [2:1]. This means that during peak times, your data speeds might be slower due to congestion. Testing speeds at different times of day can help identify if this is the issue
[2:2].
Hardware Solutions
Improving hardware can significantly impact data speeds. Using an external antenna or modem can enhance signal quality and speed [1:7]. These devices should ideally be mounted outside to avoid interference from walls or other obstacles. Nater Tater on YouTube provides reviews on such equipment
[1:8].
Device Optimization
Ensure your device is functioning optimally. A failing battery, for instance, can cause throttling issues [1:3]. Also, check settings related to WiFi scan throttling or similar features that might affect connectivity
[4:2]. For older devices, upgrading to a phone that supports carrier aggregation can improve data speeds by utilizing multiple channels simultaneously
[3:1].
Data Caps and Plans
If you experience periodic slowdowns, it could be due to reaching a data cap, leading to throttling until the next billing cycle [5:4]. Check your plan details and consider upgrading if necessary
[5:2]. Some carriers offer additional data SIM cards with higher limits, which might be worth exploring
[5:5].
Environmental Factors
The location of your device or gateway can also affect speeds. Even small changes in placement can make a difference [2:6]. Experiment with positioning to find the optimal spot for signal reception.
Ok.
So, my phone is iPhone 13, and I prefer to use SIM network [ usually 5G but sometimes gets downgraded to 4G ] because fixed broadband connection here in my neighborhood is still xDSL and has a crabby upload speed.
So you could relate that upload speed is the most important for me.
However, in speed tests in 4G coverage, upload speeds doesn't exceed 15 Mbps in the best conditions while standing literally next to the cellular tower. And in some extremely rare situations, It reaches 30 Mbps. Although download speed is usually around 120+ Mbps.
And in 5G coverage, download speed is around 650Mbps+ in the best situations and 170Mbps+ in the poor normal situations, but upload speed doesn't exceed 25 Mbps in the best situations, haven't even had the "extremely rare situations" like the one mentioned above in the 4G.
What I have tried,
Tried doing Network resets from the phone.
Tried changing SIMs for different providers and didn't work [ However, one of the providers had nice upload speeds 40Mbps+ in 4G for example, but with no 5G coverage and extremely high ping and bufferbloated all the time ]
Tried changing servers, results are almost the same even for out borders servers.
Tried calling the SIM provider, and they said the routine stuff about doing network resets, etc... [ wasn't helpful ]
What really helped was putting the SIM back into my Samsung A52 phone
But that phone is a 4G+ phone not a 5G phone. and also download speeds were much lower.
Thanks in advance.
5G Testing from a Laptop using USB Tethering
I usually get 5G upload speeds around 100mbps with my iPhone 15pro on TMobile towers (home and while traveling) when I’m within 1/4 mile of a tower. It looks like 130mb is my max on my speedtest history.
Tmobiles band 41 is a TDMA band meaning the entire band switches from upload to download many times a second. In theory band 41 upload could approach half the download speed.
I believe TMobile can choose to allocate more time to download than upload, so that can impact upload speeds. It’s also possible your local area is connecting to towers that have a more limited upload backhaul. (Like possibly a business cable internet feed?)
Turned out to be my phone's battery service thing with health under 70% causing throttling
Changed battery and the issue got solved.
Yes it’s entirely possible. However, you likely cannot without some additional hardware. Upload speed depends on the ability of your gateway to get data TO the tower. The built in antenna isn’t great at that. So, to improve your upload speed, you’re going to need to get an external antenna. Ideally this should be mounted outside so that nothing interferes with the signal, like walls. Another option is to get an externally mountable modem and to mount that outside. An after market gateway will also likely be an improvement, but again, it too will have better upload speeds with an external antenna.
The antenna route is cheaper by a bit, but aftermarket gateways and modems are going to perform better than the THI provided equipment. For comparison, I have a KVD21 that maxes out at ~25 Mbps upload. I picked up an Elsys Amplimax Ultra and now my upload speed is routinely between 80-90 Mbps.
Update :

Ok.
I'll try to buy a 5G modem and see if it helps.
Thank you for your response
Check out Nater Tater on YouTube. He does a lot of reviews of the different modems and antennas. They’re not cheap devices, but they do work.
Other than adding an antenna no... And even then it will depend on your specific exact area..

Someone yesterday mentioned rotating phone with a critical degree, but their comment got deleted.
I have tried rotating phone around 30 degrees after each speed test, and It worked.
At a certain degree upload speed was extremely good.
Do you think iPhone 13 sends data in a some sort of a linear channel, so that the phone has to be in a specific rotation to get the best upload for the connection ?
Think it just depends on how the network is built out/provisioned in a given area and how clear the path from gateway to tower is.
From a G4AR in SA, no external antenna.
I have both T-Mobile home, Internet, and cellular phone service. I live approximately a quarter of a mile from a T-Mobile tower. It appears to me that T-Mobile is throttling my home Internet speeds by approximately 1/4 of what I can get on my cell phone.
Speed test shown in photo 1, was taken on my iPhone when connected to the Home gateway. Speed test shown in the second screenshot, are when my phone is connected to T-Mobile Ultra Wideband connection on my iPhone. Third photo is that of the new 5G gateway I have no idea what it’s called.
I switched to T-Mobile home Internet about 10 months ago after I got sick of Spectrum’s high prices in lousy speeds. At that time, I was getting somewhere in the range of 500 Mbps down.
Why are the speeds approximately a quarter of what I can get on my iPhone?
One way to find out it's prioritization and not throttling is to measure at different hours of the day.
For example, I have measured speed in the afternoon, evening, and in the early morning hours like 3 am. What I have found is that speed is incredibly fast at 3 am (up to 750 down) and not as fast in the middle of the day (more like 250-450 down).
This is not explained by throttling, because if it was throttling they must have a threshold that shouldn't change much. If they want to throttle me to 250 then speed should be 250 or below pretty much all the time no matter what hour of the day.
It is explained by de-prioritization, because during the day everyone is awake using their phones, and phones have priority, so my Home Internet goes to the back of the line and gets "only" 250-350 down*. In the middle of the night everyone is asleep, the cell towers are wide open and looking for something to do, and they are more than happy to give me the entire firehose of throughput.
*I say "only" 250-350 down because until recently, speed at that level at my location used to be unattainable and when it arrived it was more than I wanted to pay, like $100/mo. I could get it with cable but at a much higher price than TMHI. For me to get 250-750 down and 10-60 up for a flat $50 and not having to deal with the cable company is something I can only be very happy about; it's a great service for me even when I am de-prioritized.
T-Mobile doesn't throttle, but they do de-prioritize.
That means that there's not an arbitrary "top speed" placed on your devices. But there is only so much bandwidth available to the tower, and there is only so much space available in the radio frequency spectrum of the bands on the tower. And TMHI is at the bottom of the priority list.
So this is normal. You're not being picked on. Different times of day, even different times of year can affect performance based on how congested your local tower is. I've noticed, for example, that my speeds drop way down when there's a power outage. Why? Because everyone just lost home internet (all the people using fiber/DSL/cable), and their phones and tablets have switched to the cell tower!
The good news is, 209Mbps is still very fast. Try not to sit and run speed tests all the time and try to get a high score. This is good enough for 13 simultaneous 4k Netflix streams. Very, very few things you do online will "feel" any different between 200 and 500mbps.
But ultimately, that's why your phone is faster. Because your phone is higher on the priority list. TMHI is the bottom of the priority list on each tower.
Much appreciated. I was curious, ran a speed test and saw a pretty big difference. Since I didn’t know why, I posted here.
So T-Mobile home Internet has a different QCI priority level than the cellular network. Which leads to different priorities?
I can easily get 4x the speed on my phone. But my phone also supports mmWave bands the home internet router doesn't.
They sent out emails a while back saying that once you cross the 1.2TB threshold you are subject to deprioritization. But even that depends on the traffic on the tower you're connecting to. If the traffic isn't hitting capacity you're fine, but when it's maxed out you'll notice this. I've noticed it myself after that point, but there are no other options in the rural area I live in. It can be frustrating, but for folks like me with no other option it's better than nothing.
Well it's all the "cellular network", but yes.
TMHI is the very bottom of the list. Below phones and tablets, and even hotspot devices.
That's sort of the schtick. You get unlimited data on a device that anticipates using significant amounts of data; but you have to wait in the back of the line (so to speak) for everyone else to get their data first.
Another possibility might be the location of your gateway if its not in the most optimal spot. I don't mean just the generic placement guide instructions, rather the actual position where it sits at your site. Even inches can make a difference. For example I can easily knock my speed way down simply shifting my gateway over a short distance while still retaining very similar metrics. Maybe you could use more trial and error to find the true perfect spot.
Otherwise +1 on everything said so far. Priority, bands used on each/SA vs NSA, even just differences in the modems themselves if your phone and gateway aren't using the same one, etc.
The high upload speed, higher than the phone (significantly), is a strong tell-tale that the signal is very strong; but this is just the result of de-prioritization. On a busier tower this is expected, TMHI is the bottom of the list.
This is my second time using TMHI. The first time, right after it launched, I got blazing, consistent speeds for a year. Then things started slowing down as T-Mobile oversold the service, sometimes as low as single digits in the evening. I canceled. This time around (two years after my Spectrum promo ended) I again sometimes get 600-700 downloads, and sometimes 35-50. Then I reboot the router and things might improve for a day. In reality 35-50 is OK temporarily for what I need for streaming and work, but I really want consistent speeds, so I will probably go back to Spectrum once it comes up with a new promotion.
this was the post i needed to read. i was seeing how this home internet is working out with others. ive got 5gig frontier that i pay 100 a month and was seeing how robust tmo is. i live in LA and all the towers in this city are maxed with cellphone traffic. since tmo home internet is low priority, id likely not see consistent, reliable speeds. tmo have been blowing me up with this home Internet offer of late, and so i came on (didn't even know this sub existed until i internet searched today) here to read up on others' experience. Appreciate your input. i can stop searching and move on with my day...
What I don’t understand is why speeds get substantially faster on TMHI when using a VPN versus when not. To me that suggests that the content has some relevance and that it’s not just a matter of the line being prioritized lower.
Or is it just that the path the VPN is routing the content is faster (closer to me) than the TMHI path for routing (my very lay and poor—probably incorrect—understanding)?
Cause it will be dramatically different and never slower on the VPN.
When I use a VPN my speeds go down to barely anything.
Hi there,
I recently attempted to increase the phone signal on my D280, which worked marginally, but I noticed that the data speed greatly deteriorated.
I am not sure why this happened, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a relatively simple repair that could remedy this?
Much appreciation,
Cw
>I recently attempted to increase the phone signal
Can you expand on this.
"Increasing the signal" isn't really a thing you can usually accomplish as a user or as a tech with mobile phones. It's engineered into the hardware and firmware. If, somehow, you managed to "crank it up," then it's going to have a higher output of heat, chance of failure, and unexpected consequences.
Best option would be to undo whatever was done, maybe. Or, replace the board. You could send it off to someone who does board work, but that may cost more than the phone.
Not a problem, what I did was add a wire to one of the terminals inside the phone. how much experience do you have repairing mobiles?
Like I said, it lowered the dBm ( IE increased signal)
I'd start by removing the added wire.
In my experience, more signal strength than intended can cause echo or similar negative impact. It's not just a matter of increasing power. You have to adjust or engineer the hardware and firmware that processes the signal into usable data. Not really a DIY thing.
Your best bet for an increased data speed is to buy a phone that supports something "carrier aggregation." Basically, it means that it can support multiple channels at the same time, greatly increasing its speed. The Nexus 5 came out a bit before this became the norm.
Hi dear Community,
I am very proud holding the new X 15 Ultra in my hands. I have it for some days now and I did not regret my decision changing from Samsung to Xiaomi yet. I wanted to ask you if there are any tricks and tips how to increase WiFi connectivity? I just noticed that my smartphone suddenly had increased connection (didnt change location - bathroom ;)) when I ran a speedtest checking the performance... I was wondering If the Smartphone sometimes throttles down on purpose? Or do I have to update some settings?
Thank you very much
Go to developer settings and uncheck WiFi scan throttling
Thank you very much!!!!
On same spot wifi is suddenly better I assuming you are saying this. If that's case did check the signals on modem and router ?
Yes, that s correct. I will restart my router. This might Help. Thank you
From your words, I don't understand. Is the WiFi signal better or worse than before?
Sorry for the misunderstanding. WiFi is better during speedtest than in average Mode..
What gives? This happens every one or two months. VPN on or off, connected to any server, it doesn't matter. Takes ages to load anything on my phone or laptop, on wifi or mobile data. Can't get my office work done. Weixin payments take 45+ seconds to pull up while the vendor and I just sit there and awkwardly stare at each other. Wechat mini apps don't load, and when they actually do the translate feature takes several minutes to work. Using China Mobile, and my bill is paid for via mobile top-up on wechat. After a few days the internet speeds go back to normal as if nothing ever happened, and everything is fine for another 1-2 months until it randomly happens again. Does anyone else experience this?
Probably blew through your data cap by the end of the month and then you get throttled until the 1st of the next month. Has nothing to do with being paid up.
Is there a way to increase that cap online or do I have to go to a China Mobile location in person? Someone else initially helped me set up my phone and internet when I moved here but there was a language barrier so they didn't really make it clear how things worked or what my data limits were.
You can do it through the app, but you'll have to change packages. I can do it, but I use Telecom 电信. Not sure if you can do it with China Mobile through the app. Try searching for 套餐 in the app and see if there's an option to upgrade.
Also, through the app you can see your monthly data limit/usage and other info.
I don't know how to do it online. I would just go into a shop and ask.
I used to run out of data quickly, as well. However, when I moved into my second apartment, I had to put the internet under my name and China Telecom gave me a data sim card. Because I bought the fastest internet package, I received a sim card with 10GB of data per month! It's so awesome - now I never run out of data.
Check to see if you're eligible for a data sim from China Telecom if your apartment's internet is in your name. Even if you're not, check to see if a data sim from one of the three mobile companies is a cheaper option.
Also, regardless of what you do, when you're at the mobile companies, get your sim card locked. This will make everything so much easier to deal with if your phone gets lost or stolen.

Imam Poco M4 4G telefon i maksimalnu brzinu interneta od oko 15Mbps. Android je up to date. Očekivao bih 5-10 puta brze.
Šta sam probao:
Da li može biti do telefona? Šta mogu još da probam?
Update: Probao karticu u drugom telefonu ide do 100Mbps. MTS kartica u mom telefonu, isti limit od 15Mbps.
Probaj sa drugom A1 karticom, i sa karticom iz druge mreže.
Tako ćeš videti da li je do kartice, A1 ili telefona.
Upravo probao i dodao u post.
Probao, tamo radi ko sat.
па шта питаш онда брт, знаш да је до телефона
so i have a monthly 20 gb subscription on my cellular company and when it ends it ends I can't extend it , so i want to limit my speed to conserve, i don't mind watching videos on low quality but most apps don't let you decide , so im looking for an app or trick to slow down the download speed, I changed the prefferd network type to 3g and 2g , 3g is too fast 2g is to slow , i want something around 200 KBps
The Developer options has a download limiter with a few alternatives, it's mainly for testing.
i tried it , it didn't seem to work
When I tried it, it applied to cellular data but not Wifi.
What difference does it make? You're now gobbling up the same quota way more uncomfortable.
saving data ? i don't think i understood what u said
That's hot not hot that works. You'll download the same amount of data but slower.
You are now running through the same quota, just slower. It's possible some services will indeed scale down quality. For most others the experience will just get worse.
Basically, if you manage to do what you want, the apps will continue to use the same data capacity, but with a poor experience for you. In any case, you should prohibit certain apps from using mobile data or reduce their usage (i.e., their settings); that would be more useful.
You can turn of data saver mode. You can find it in the settings by searching "data saver" in the search box at the top.
That will reduce the data usage of apps.
You could also look into switching networks. At least here in the UK the price comparison sites have better prices than the official websites of the phone networks, so you could look at them and get more than 20 GB for the same or a lower price.
Are you regularly going through your 20GB of data? You may want to see which apps are using the most and then focus on those apps.
it's not enough for the whole month yeah , and like i can't just not use Instagram and Facebook, i need those for study and communication
I have 5g high speed data for 5mbs, and then it throttles to 2g. Is there a way to set it up so that my data speed is a lot slower so that the 5mbs can last longer? I would rather it be medium slow for the entire month instead of lightening fast for the first half and then too slow to connect to a web page for the rest.
This sounds like a question better asked to your cellular carrier. Even if you throttle your individual phone’s data speed , the webpage will still ‘cost’ the same amount of data. After a certain amount of webpages - at either the full or throttled speed - you will reach your carrier’s data limit and they will throttle your speed to 2G. So unless you find some solution with your carrier, throttling will make you go medium slow for half a month and ultra slow for half a month. Best of luck. Signed, Jackthefarter12
I understand how things will still "cost" the same, but it would cause me to slow down without having to make an effort, which would save me data. Like if I have an hour to browse the internet and each page takes 2x as long to load, I'd be loading half the stuff and using half the data as usual.
Stay connected to wifi?
That has nothing to do with my question. I don't have access to WiFi very often
What phone do you have?
I have a KB2007 on Android 13 with Metro by T-Mobile and the speeds on this phone suck. I just wanted a minor upgrade from a Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
Even late at night is it slow. 0.001 to 10kb slow. Tried rolling back to Android 11 but my computer wouldn't recognize the phone (despite having the latest OP8t drivers). I don't know how to stop the phone from using a specific band as other suggested.
I don't want to switch to another phone as I no longer have $ for that. This phone is amazing in other things. I just want to see if i can improve my MD speeds. It shouldn't take my phone 40+ seconds to load a page.
Edit: I have the same sim I used in my note 9, which came from an A54. On both Note 9 and A54, the speeds were MUCH faster than now.
If anyone struggles with this in the future, I used the app 5G Switch by Sava KS from the Play Store and after changing to NR only and then back to NR/LTE/WCDMA/GSM my Provider stated speed was reached. From 10 Mbits in inner city to stable 50 Mbits (max. speed for my plan)
Do you have a 5G data plan and are you in an area where 5G is available?
Yes to both. Although it is the cheapest 5g data plan. Bought a 2gb top up to see if it did anything. Nothing.
I am with Virgin mobile Canada and my phone is showing 4G even though I have the 5G plan. Someone on reddit mentioned the 5G network manager app from play store to change the prefereced network type. After I did that, I started seeing 5G and speed improved. It's worth the try.
I'm getting 600Mbps on 5G with KB2005. It's probably your ISP not supporting it properly.
Maybe :/
I guess your unit doesn't have all the bands
Go to apn settings change bearer uptick unspecified and select rest of them. This mostly solves the problem with both upload and download speeds check it out..
how to increase mobile data speed
Here are some key considerations to increase mobile data speed:
Check Your Signal Strength: Ensure you have a strong signal. Move to an area with better reception if you're in a low-signal zone.
Limit Background Data Usage: Close apps running in the background that may be using data. On most smartphones, you can restrict background data in the settings.
Use Wi-Fi When Available: Whenever possible, connect to Wi-Fi networks to offload data usage from your mobile plan.
Clear Cache and Data: Regularly clear the cache of your apps and browser to improve performance. This can help speed up data loading times.
Update Your Device: Ensure your phone's operating system and apps are up to date. Updates often include performance improvements.
Disable Data-Hungry Features: Turn off features like automatic app updates, location services, and high-definition streaming when not needed.
Switch to 4G or 5G: If your device supports it, ensure you are connected to the fastest network available (4G LTE or 5G).
Use a Data Compression App: Consider using apps that compress data, such as Opera Max or Google Chrome's Lite Mode, to reduce the amount of data used while browsing.
Contact Your Carrier: If you consistently experience slow speeds, check with your mobile carrier to see if there are network issues or if you need to upgrade your plan.
Recommendation: Start by checking your signal strength and limiting background data usage, as these are often the easiest and most effective ways to see immediate improvements. If issues persist, consider upgrading your plan or switching to a carrier with better coverage in your area.
