T-Mobile Throttling and Data Issues

TL;DR

  • T-Mobile users report frequent data throttling, connectivity issues, and poor customer service.
  • Consider alternative ISPs if persistent issues occur.

Frequent Connectivity and Throttling Issues

Many T-Mobile customers have reported experiencing connectivity issues, including data throttling and poor internet speeds. Users often find that their data service drops significantly, even with full bars of LTE or 5G [3:1][3:2]. Some users have noted that these issues are more pronounced in crowded areas, such as stadiums or busy city locations [3:2][3:3]. Additionally, there are reports of data being deprioritized for certain subscribers, such as Google Fi users [3:3].

Customer Service Challenges

Several users have expressed frustration with T-Mobile's customer service. Instead of resolving technical issues, some representatives have attempted to upsell products or services [1:1][1:2]. This has led to dissatisfaction among customers who feel their concerns are not being adequately addressed. A few users have suggested reaching out to T-Mobile's support on social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter for better assistance [5:2].

Tower Maintenance and Network Issues

Network maintenance and tower upgrades are common reasons cited for connectivity problems. Users have experienced multi-hour outages and fluctuating speeds during these periods [2:5][5:6]. While some improvements are seen post-maintenance, the lack of communication from T-Mobile regarding these disruptions is a point of contention [5:9].

Alternative Solutions and Recommendations

For those facing persistent issues, exploring other internet service providers (ISPs) might be beneficial. Some users have switched back to previous providers like Xfinity or AT&T Fiber due to consistent service quality [1:1][4:2]. Additionally, investing in external antennas to boost signal strength has been recommended by some users, although this can be costly [5:12]. For those considering switching, it's advisable to test new services during trial periods before canceling existing subscriptions [5:4].

ORIGINAL POST

My T-Mobile home internet's been so buggy over the past couple of weeks. I work from home using the Google platform and stream occasionally. I've called twice now, had to move it from one side of the house to the other, and then was told that if I can get YouTube up (couldn't even get Ookla to work while on the phone), then I need to talk to my workplace IT to deal with the Gmail issues. I guess I can understand that and then was instructed to turn it off/on. He told me it had been 9 days since I've restarted it. I didn't realize that you had to unplug it and re-plug it back in every 7 days. It's only been 9 days. I've had it for about a year and a half and have not had problems with it, nor had to do that. Just these last couple of weeks. I told him I appreciated his help and I'd try the weekly restarts.

So I can deal with the duh moment and now I'll do the restart thing (seriously??). But to ask if I want to add an apple watch (I have one...do you want another? I have two...no.), and then take a look at my international calling plan...really? I told him I didn't want to buy anything, just consistent non-buggy home internet. Sigh...I guess this is more a rant, but I just would like focused tech support without having to deal with the sales crap. Anyone else living near the HQ having home internet issues?

I just had a similar experience. Been having a terrible time with my fx4100, requiring multiple daily reboots. First agent suggested I try a different gateway and connected me to that department. The new agent then started the order and said my new plan would be $10 more per month. I was like "hold up, I'm just trying to get a functioning gateway. You can't be changing my monthly price for that." a couple minutes of back and forth, more waiting, and then asked me about adding a phone line. Almost felt like I was at a car dealership. I used to be a die hard tmobile home internet fan since 2020ish, but this last year has been a huge pain in the arse.

Right?!? I had some problems when I first plugged it in, but they were so good and wanting to expand in my area, so everything was solved. Car dealership is right. Thanks for validating!

I've only had this for a few weeks now and went all in with the waveform 4x4 antenna mounted outside. Been quite happy with my setup THO. Had to reboot it just yesterday due to no internet access after 20 days online. Dunno why exactly, but it's back. Once I get my rebate I'll likely snag a promo from spectrum or xfinity and just save it for the next time I need to switch. At least I got an alternate option besides cable. Sigh...

They actually sent me nice apology and owned that it’s not as consistent as I should expect. I appreciated it, but will still be keeping an eye on it. I’m locked in at $50 per month, which is cheap compared to what I’m paying for Xfinity, but 50 bucks is 50 bucks. Thanks for sharing the antenna. Didn’t know about that!

Father_Guido · 15 days ago

Antenna is pricy but I already has "very good" signal and that almost doubled my speed with "excellent" signal. Latency is still there, but I'm not too concerned about that. Worth $450 and half a day installing? I think so just for the flexibility that I now have with the cable companies ;)

This is why I left last week. My Home Internet had issues since the 5G SA ‘upgrade’ two months ago & it went totally out last Friday. And I call into tech support & instead of helping me, they were trying to sell me a new phone. I hung up & called back & had the same thing happen. It seems they no longer want to help, just sell new stuff. I left & went back to ATT Fiber after almost 3 years. TMHI has been almost unusable for me since the SA became live two months ago. And I’m seriously considering leaving the phone service also if thing continue this way with the constant upselling when you just have a question or need help…

If I could get AT&T Fiber, I wouldn't be hanging around here on T-Mo... I spent about 10 years on UVerse and it was rock-solid -- the only downside was annual price increases that eventually made it stupid to stay with them.

ATT seems to have changed some of their policies, going back, I got locked in at $65/mo for as long as I keep the service for the gigabit plan. It’s a promo they’re running in my area currently. I think the competition from TMHI & Verizon may be finally making them lower prices… But only time will tell because I know how these companies claim no price increases and then boom price increase with some fine print…

I had a 10 hour outage for my phone and Internet, T-Mobile knows nothing about it according to support.

There's no way a tower goes down for 10 hours and T-Mobile knows nothing about it.

Mine is even worse. It's always averaged between 60-120. Which is fine. But this past week, running a stability test, every 30-60 seconds i get spikes over a second. A couple times it's even jumped up as high as 3. It's insane.

This happened to me for 3-4 months. Seems like the last few weeks it's finally back to normal. I am in college and take proctored tests online and if you lose connection you fail the test. I had so many 1 minute drops I was worried I'd have to switch back to cable. Seems to have been fixed though keeping my fingers crossed.

In the article it says that T-Mobile will try to appeal this decision not to get fined around $92 million I believe, So we might have this depending on what type of strategy they'll try to use to have us consent to our location data being sold

While it's not related to speeds it's not just t-mobile. So the FCC fined them all 200 mil and the phone carriers raise the prices. So we are basically paying their fines for them to spy on us.

Data getting deprioritized?

Posted by modeless · in r/GoogleFi · 1 month ago

Here's something that happens to me a lot. My phone says 2-3 bars of LTE, but I'm getting no data service at all. I turn airplane mode on and off. When my phone reconnects, I have 4-5 bars of 5G and fast data! For about 30 seconds. Then it apparently realizes I'm a Fi subscriber and kicks me off of 5G down to LTE and my data stops working again.

I can keep flipping airplane mode on for a second to get 30 seconds of fast data as many times as I want. But why is it throttling me? Does T-Mobile deprioritize Fi customers?

They aren't supposed to, but it happens to me at work sometimes as well, it doesn't kick me off 5G but throughput drops. Can't say for certain T-Mobile customers aren't getting the same thing.

I work at an airport with thousands of people around at any given time, so no wonder towers are swamped.

T-Mobile's MTU issue cost them at least one customer

Posted by vcems · in r/tmobileisp · 1 month ago

<rant>

I've had T-Mobile for 2 years now. Recently, my work laptop would not function due to the VPN (Global Protect) settings. After trying to work with T-Mobile and my state employer's IT team (who would not change the MTU settings even though other agencies did), I have gone back to the dark side - Xfinity. I knew how it could be resolved... either increase the MTU on the T-Mobile hardware, or decrease the MTU setting on my computer. Neither could be done (IT dept locks down our ability to change settings, and T-Mobile is just... T-Mobile).

The residential ISP equipment could not or would not be fixed to allow a higher MTU, but the commercial Inseego unit does allow it, however T-Mobile would not send me the Inseego unit for my residential service (I have one for my business already, which is how I found out it worked at 1500).

So, T-Mobile lost me as a residential customer. If they throttle the Inseego units, they will also lose me as a business customer.

Don't feel too bad about leaving T-Mobile. I could change the MTU on my laptop and t-mo still urp'd up on my employer's Global Protect VPN. I'm a Linux admin and I work from home everyday. Our network engineers and I worked for a week before realizing I had to pull plug on TMHI.

In the end I switched back to Xfinity for my work from home connection. TMHI works the rest of the house but I'm starting to rethink that relationship. I had a few other coworkers in the same situation and they went back to Xfinity and never looked back.

It's really a shame though. The t-mo tower is about a quarter mile from my house and the throughput was amazing. But not being able to scroll a terminal screen for more than 30 lines was killing me.

Yeah, I had fantastic throughput because the tower is so close to me. Up until this most recent change that I suspect is on my agency side, it was wonderful. What really peeves me though is that the inseego box still has the MTU settings correct so I can use that at my business location. I'd rather be sitting in my barcalounger and do my job!

My dad is going through the same thing a his new job. Neither his work IT nor T-Mobile will do anything about it, so he is signing up for local fiber or cable, whichever company manages to get their act together.

I also use T-Mobile isp for my WFH, but thankfully my work doesn’t have a vpn in the first place.

I tried. They knew exactly how to fix it because we did. Problem was every time I rebooted it would have to get fixed again. They would not create a profile that would keep the MTU setting. They told me I had to work with T-Mobile. Even though other state agencies managed to create profiles for their T-Mobile ISP users. It sucks. I actually like T-Mobile. I preferred them over Xfinity.

Terrible experience with T Mobile Home Internet service

Posted by Diligent-Specific-34 · in r/tmobileisp · 1 month ago

I switched from a 400/25 Mbps service with Xfinity to T Mobile Amplified Home Internet about 2 months ago. when during the trial period I was hitting downstream speeds even above 800Mbps and upstream about 80Mbps.

This past week has been a nightmare though. My internet became practically unusable. Speedtest by Ookla reports speeds all over the place. The best I have hit was 180/5 but only momentarily because for the most part it's somewhere closer to 50/1.5 and there has been times where I hit 10/0.5.

Customer/technical service are clueless. They keep telling me that there's maintenance work they do at the tower I was connecting to up until recently, but neither they gave me a heads up about those service disruptions, nor do they give me an ETA of completion, not even promise to notify me when this will be completed to at least know what kind of situation I am in at that point. The last person I spoke to today said "at this point I want to wish you to enjoy the rest of your summer" LOL.

They did offer me some credit for this month's bill but that's totally useless if you don't have internet service practically speaking. I will be seriously looking to switch service providers again of course, I feel the way their sales department promotes their service is extremely aggressive and when their capacity hits a limit, you will be dealing with technical issues and service disruptions/outages all of a sudden.

I was curious if people have come across this kind of situation, what was their experience and if they have any advice to share.

I am sharing a sample of my speedtest stats .

This is going to be normal with wireless home internet. That is most likely because they are performing maintenance on a tower. They won’t tell you anything as usually phones can connect to different towers. It could also be a server issue on T-Mobile’s side. I would contact t-force on Facebook or twitter and have them look into it. You might get some more insight on what the actual issue is. I’m here to tell you tho, anything wrong with the tower your service connects to is going to drastically affect how your service works. I’m a longtime AT&T Fixed Wireless customer so I’ve been going thru this back and forth struggle for 5 years now.

everything is a compromise, tmhi relies on cell towers that by their nature are not a robust system for maintaining optimal service if a tower goes down or has issues and you dont have backup from your location

cable internet has other problems but if a node goes down its zero service rather than slower which depending on where you live happens a lot or never

yeah those speeds are ass but I bet its temporary given your past speeds

3 upvotes on reddit
Hot-Bat-5813 · 1 month ago

Cancel and move back to Xfinity if the tmhi service isn't meeting your needs? Sometimes things done to the tower/network take longer than a week to accomplish, if that is what is actually happening.

Sure I will do that but honestly this is a crappy way of doing business. I would have never switched to them had I known that service is so unreliable and customer management so incompetent. I mean they could at least notify people about possible service disruptions and follow up with ETA and progress updates, if all of a sudden your service turns from high speed to dialup quality. I mean 0.5Mbps upstream? WTF?

It's why they offer a trial, and people should 100% test the service before cancelling their existing ISP subscription.

Sometimes, T-Mobile Home Internet works great. Sometimes it's a trash fire. It all depends on the tower situation where you live.

That's the key.

I call probably every 3 months to calmly alert them my service isn't very good. And Literally every time they tell me "They're currently working on your tower will be done tomorrow."

And all they do is a reconnect right at that same time and it sort of improves.

My speeds haven't never been what I see most people complain about. I've only cracked 100mbps once, with my Chester modem.

With the stock tmobile units I've never hit more than 25mbps, and its average is around 10mbps....

But it's literally the only provider that will offer me internet. Even satellite and starlink told me no.

It’s funny you wrote this because I am going through the exact same thing as we speak. As of the 18th I have dropped from 500-800 down to sometimes 50-80 down and my up speed went from 30 to near 0 or if lucky 4. I have had there home internet for over a year with no problems. I have gone on with T force and get the same old runaround. Maintenance, bla bla bla, but know eta or anything. Even my cell phone sometimes creeps and took 5 min to just send a picture. I have line of sight to the tower with some trees that have always been there but in winter I can see the tower about a mile away. If I go 1-2 blocks in either direction I get awesome speeds in the car… over 1000 mbps and 30-40 up. My complaints have fallen on deaf ears over there so I’m giving it sometime before I climb the tower and hammer the panel back my way .. lol just kidding. But ya I feel your pain and you’re not alone.

I ordered new service in June and I was completely content with my 250-350 compared to 50-60 with Cox. Coincidentally, my slowed to a crawl 1-10 on Aug. 18, the same date as yours, the start of my third month’s billing period. I moved the gateway all over and even took it outside with no improvement. On Saturday, I chatted online with support and they reset the gateway and told me they could already see an improvement. I did not. Then they checked and also told me they were doing maintenance on my tower. Since Monday, it’s improved a little, minimum 15 download and in the middle of the night 250. How long does this maintenance take?! I’m also frustrated that they do not notify customers or indicate anywhere online when there are issues, like other internet and power companies do. I have had T-Mobile cell service for 11 years without a problem. I used it as a hotspot when my internet service went down and got about 30 Mbps download. I was so happy to get out of my abusive relationship with Cox, but now I feel like I’m stuck in another one.

It’s very much possible the tower you were connecting to was closer and had solid 5G n bands that were giving you the good speed. If that tower is out, you’re connecting to a different more distant tower and are only on LTE et the edge of the coverage.

Try moving the modem to different locations of your home, new tower is likely in different direction. You can get external 4x4 mimo antenna to boost your signal. Or wait until maintenance is complete and hopefully you get better signal.

Slow Home Internet

We have had T-Mobile home internet for 5 years and it has been great, however over the last two months it’s be total garbage. Spent multiple hours with support, even got the new T-mobile amplified router and it was great for 1 week and now it’s garbage again. T-Mobile’s solution was to use my phone as a hotspot when the home internet is slow, but in my option that’s the right answer. We use to always get close to 200MB down and 70MB up, which was great for us. We get anywhere from 1 to 5MB down and 35 - 70MB up. It’s totally unusable as it is and I’m going to have to switch.

I’m so disappointed in this, and the customer service is just terrible around it.

I have over 200 lines on T-Mobile and it just annoys me they don’t care, maybe I move them all off.

In my area for the past 4 nights, they have been doing "coverage and reliability" maintenance literally from 5pm until sometime after I'm already asleep. Seems like a great idea to wait until your customers get off work and would like to game, stream, or just scroll through the internet to down your connectivity.

Unfortunately that’s tower congestion (too many cell customers and TMHI is the lowest priority) when download is that much lower the upload.

I’d imagine TMobile engineering is aware, but there’s no quick solution, and a tower capacity upgrade can take a long time.

If you are lucky you might be able to connect to a different, faster tower (even with less “bars”) by moving the gateway to the other side of your house, otherwise it might be best to leave instead of waiting for them to upgrade the tower.

It can be during times of high congestion.

Most users have unloaded pings in the 20-50 range (with higher loaded leading to buffer bloat)

During congestion yes. 105 isn't bad though, under normal conditions you may still get 100+ depending on the routing and the distance away from the server. When testing with nearby speedtest servers and no congestion you will likely see 20-40 ms as Speedtest selects the closest server automatically (Sometimes these are even hosted on the ISP's network).

Anytime my data usage approaches 100 gb. it starts to get throttled

Anytime my high speed data passes right around 75 GB. My data seems to get throttled and customer service never seems to know what they’re talking about. It’s annoying having to contact them every time it happens. I need a permanent fix.

Home Internet practically completely stops daily

Posted by AHAMKHARI · in r/tmobileisp · 4 months ago

As the title says. Starting a couple months ago, my router will, at some point in the evening usually around 6-7, start slowing down before stopping. This happens every single day without fail and i’m stuck wondering if it’s something on my end or if this is a common issue. Only two things are ever connected to it that being my PC and PS5, both of which are connected by ethernet.

This can’t be an issue of my machines having trouble connecting to the router since, as I mentioned, they are both connected by an ethernet cable. I doubt it’s congestion unless every single T-Mobile customer is making some cross country call all at the exact same time.

I’m considering just completely replacing this router with something from a completely different company and brand.

Ours was like that for a few months, nightly from 7-11pm and most of the afternoon on weekends speeds would drop from 80/20 at night to 8/4 or less, sometime under 4. Eventually they upgraded our tower and now we get 250-350 anytime of the day or night.

So sounds like your local tower is over capacity and not much you can do on your side.

I was with TMHI for 2 years, and it worked great. One day, out of the blue, it just started acting up exactly as you describe. It worked fine during the day, but at night, when everyone was home, it died. I found out 2 things. 1, they re-aligned my tower, causing me to get less service, and 2, they oversold my area. This is because at the time, people would use other people's addresses to order the service even though they were not allowed anymore on the tower. I think this might of changed, but that's the problem with wireless is it's not an unlimited resource.

Data throttled after using less than half of the 200gb "unlimited"

Posted by cantliftmuch · in r/mobilex · 5 months ago

Edit 2 at the beginning to explain why they do what they did to me. The plan is unlimited 199 gb per month. They only allow 50gb pero th to be high speed, everything else is throttled to 50kbit/second. They told me I could buy more data to get my speed back up, I did this because it wasn't much money. My speed never went up. They then told me that I'm still throttled because I still went over my allotted data for the billing cycle. End edit.

So I've had mobile x for 27 days as of today. Yesterday I noticed my data was incredibly slow. After over 24 hours since my support ticket, because I was given a sarcastic response the first time, I was told I'm being throttled for too much data usage. I looked and I've used on average, 1.83gb per day, which equates to about 49.42 gb total. The balance says I have 148gb remaining until 5/3.

That makes me wonder why I'm being throttled? Regardless, I'm switching back to my old provider once I get home from work. It may be $20 more per month, but I'm not being lied to about what unlimited means.

Edit: their customer service is being incredibly condescending. I've been meeting that with extra politeness and they're refusing to answer me, they just keep giving me the terms of use link, wherein I read that they reserve the right to limit and restrict all use on any customer for any reason without explanation (paraphrased).

PSA - For anyone looking in on this situation, OP in the comments, stated that Verizon doesn’t have good coverage in their area. When asked why OP got MobileX, then, OP stated they didn’t know MobileX was a Verizon MVNO.

So then this “throttle” really means nothing, if it is even a “throttle”. It could just be the subpar coverage of Verizon. Which is a MAJOR variable in OP’s situation that OP didn’t disclose in their post. Which means, at worst, this post is bunk or at best, OP’s judgment isn’t to be trusted.

My point is that you:

  1. Didn’t disclose, in your post, the fact that Verizon has subpar coverage where you live.

  2. Didn’t do your due diligence prior to signing up for MobileX to find out what carrier they use.

Therefore, it is hard to trust your judgment on this entire situation.

Some of this could be solved very plainly …is there a speed reduction after 50 gigs to 512k for the remaining 149? If that’s true then that’s fine. If not then have fun up to 199 gigs. I couldn’t get the use policy to load on the website. It said page cannot be found .

2 upvotes on reddit
cantliftmuch · OP · 5 months ago

They don't explain it in their use policy, it says they reserve the right to reduce whenever they want, but I was able to find several people complaining about being throttled once they hit 50gb, so my guess is they throttle you atfer 59 for the remaining 149. They won't increase you speed if you buy more data, just increase the data they allow.

It went down to .05mbits/second when they throttled me.

It makes sense, the issue wasn't that they did it, they acted they didn't for a day, then got sarcastic, then got rude, then got evasive. Has they told me that why it happened, I'd still switch, because I can't use a plan like that, but I wouldn't have been upset, just disappointed.

You can see the CEOs response here, I refused his help and he got butthurt.

I am sure it would be the same. Every company has its pros and cons. I can say from my one experience with Peter A it went well. I would also humbly suggest going with Visible wireless as well. They now have unlimited priority data on their Visible plus plan that has 5G and 5G ultra wideband for just 35 dollars a month all taxes included. Since you were on MobileX, and if you have good Verizon coverage in your area then you may want to look at what they have to offer as well.

TBH I'm currently on US Mobile right but I'm thinking of switching to Visible and get that plan since Verizon is the best network where I live and they currently have the best deal for unlimited priority data. Even Us Mobile at best has 100GB of priority data on premium plan which costs 45 a month and then after that they throttle you I believe to 1mps too and they only offer 50GBs of hotspot.

Don't get me wrong their customer service is 2nd to none IMHO and if you need options with pool plans, or plans that work on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizons network then they are the best with that. However if you already know that Verizon is what you want and you just want a straightforward unlimited priority data plan and unlimited hotspot at 10mps on Verizons network then I would say the best is visible wireless at this time.

That really made you upset didn't it? You're blaming me for this more than the CEO did. It's okay though, my mistake doesn't affect the issue at all, so get down off your high horse, untwist your knickers, and calm down.

You're right though, I didn't do my due diligence, but I was also ignorant, as I didn't know Verizon and T-Mobile have huge dead spots over my house until I got mobile x and noticed I had bad coverage unless I was on my wifi.

I was able to figure that out and found out about the dead zone, and didn't blame mobile x at all for this, as is proper. It's really not even Verizon or T-Mobile's fault for the bad coverage, it's the DHS's fault because I live near a nuclear power plant and they limit coverage due to national security concerns.

Is T-Mobile throttling my internet speeds?

Posted by Quicksilver7716 · in r/tmobileisp · 6 months ago

I have both T-Mobile home, Internet, and cellular phone service. I live approximately a quarter of a mile from a T-Mobile tower. It appears to me that T-Mobile is throttling my home Internet speeds by approximately 1/4 of what I can get on my cell phone.

Speed test shown in photo 1, was taken on my iPhone when connected to the Home gateway. Speed test shown in the second screenshot, are when my phone is connected to T-Mobile Ultra Wideband connection on my iPhone. Third photo is that of the new 5G gateway I have no idea what it’s called.

I switched to T-Mobile home Internet about 10 months ago after I got sick of Spectrum’s high prices in lousy speeds. At that time, I was getting somewhere in the range of 500 Mbps down.

Why are the speeds approximately a quarter of what I can get on my iPhone?

This is my second time using TMHI. The first time, right after it launched, I got blazing, consistent speeds for a year. Then things started slowing down as T-Mobile oversold the service, sometimes as low as single digits in the evening. I canceled. This time around (two years after my Spectrum promo ended) I again sometimes get 600-700 downloads, and sometimes 35-50. Then I reboot the router and things might improve for a day. In reality 35-50 is OK temporarily for what I need for streaming and work, but I really want consistent speeds, so I will probably go back to Spectrum once it comes up with a new promotion.

this was the post i needed to read. i was seeing how this home internet is working out with others. ive got 5gig frontier that i pay 100 a month and was seeing how robust tmo is. i live in LA and all the towers in this city are maxed with cellphone traffic. since tmo home internet is low priority, id likely not see consistent, reliable speeds. tmo have been blowing me up with this home Internet offer of late, and so i came on (didn't even know this sub existed until i internet searched today) here to read up on others' experience. Appreciate your input. i can stop searching and move on with my day...

One way to find out it's prioritization and not throttling is to measure at different hours of the day.

For example, I have measured speed in the afternoon, evening, and in the early morning hours like 3 am. What I have found is that speed is incredibly fast at 3 am (up to 750 down) and not as fast in the middle of the day (more like 250-450 down).

This is not explained by throttling, because if it was throttling they must have a threshold that shouldn't change much. If they want to throttle me to 250 then speed should be 250 or below pretty much all the time no matter what hour of the day.

It is explained by de-prioritization, because during the day everyone is awake using their phones, and phones have priority, so my Home Internet goes to the back of the line and gets "only" 250-350 down*. In the middle of the night everyone is asleep, the cell towers are wide open and looking for something to do, and they are more than happy to give me the entire firehose of throughput.

*I say "only" 250-350 down because until recently, speed at that level at my location used to be unattainable and when it arrived it was more than I wanted to pay, like $100/mo. I could get it with cable but at a much higher price than TMHI. For me to get 250-750 down and 10-60 up for a flat $50 and not having to deal with the cable company is something I can only be very happy about; it's a great service for me even when I am de-prioritized.

T-Mobile doesn't throttle, but they do de-prioritize.

That means that there's not an arbitrary "top speed" placed on your devices. But there is only so much bandwidth available to the tower, and there is only so much space available in the radio frequency spectrum of the bands on the tower. And TMHI is at the bottom of the priority list.

So this is normal. You're not being picked on. Different times of day, even different times of year can affect performance based on how congested your local tower is. I've noticed, for example, that my speeds drop way down when there's a power outage. Why? Because everyone just lost home internet (all the people using fiber/DSL/cable), and their phones and tablets have switched to the cell tower!

The good news is, 209Mbps is still very fast. Try not to sit and run speed tests all the time and try to get a high score. This is good enough for 13 simultaneous 4k Netflix streams. Very, very few things you do online will "feel" any different between 200 and 500mbps.

But ultimately, that's why your phone is faster. Because your phone is higher on the priority list. TMHI is the bottom of the priority list on each tower.

Much appreciated. I was curious, ran a speed test and saw a pretty big difference. Since I didn’t know why, I posted here.

So T-Mobile home Internet has a different QCI priority level than the cellular network. Which leads to different priorities?

6 upvotes on reddit
Volcanic_xB · 6 months ago

They sent out emails a while back saying that once you cross the 1.2TB threshold you are subject to deprioritization. But even that depends on the traffic on the tower you're connecting to. If the traffic isn't hitting capacity you're fine, but when it's maxed out you'll notice this. I've noticed it myself after that point, but there are no other options in the rural area I live in. It can be frustrating, but for folks like me with no other option it's better than nothing.

2 upvotes on reddit
Evening_Rock5850 · 6 months ago

Well it's all the "cellular network", but yes.

TMHI is the very bottom of the list. Below phones and tablets, and even hotspot devices.

That's sort of the schtick. You get unlimited data on a device that anticipates using significant amounts of data; but you have to wait in the back of the line (so to speak) for everyone else to get their data first.

Another possibility might be the location of your gateway if its not in the most optimal spot. I don't mean just the generic placement guide instructions, rather the actual position where it sits at your site. Even inches can make a difference. For example I can easily knock my speed way down simply shifting my gateway over a short distance while still retaining very similar metrics. Maybe you could use more trial and error to find the true perfect spot.

Otherwise +1 on everything said so far. Priority, bands used on each/SA vs NSA, even just differences in the modems themselves if your phone and gateway aren't using the same one, etc.

4 upvotes on reddit
Evening_Rock5850 · 6 months ago

The high upload speed, higher than the phone (significantly), is a strong tell-tale that the signal is very strong; but this is just the result of de-prioritization. On a busier tower this is expected, TMHI is the bottom of the list.

What I don’t understand is why speeds get substantially faster on TMHI when using a VPN versus when not. To me that suggests that the content has some relevance and that it’s not just a matter of the line being prioritized lower.

Or is it just that the path the VPN is routing the content is faster (closer to me) than the TMHI path for routing (my very lay and poor—probably incorrect—understanding)?

Cause it will be dramatically different and never slower on the VPN.

T-Mobile throttling my data

Key Considerations Regarding T-Mobile Throttling:

  1. Data Prioritization: T-Mobile may throttle your data speeds during times of network congestion if you are on a limited data plan. This is common among carriers to manage network traffic.

  2. Data Limits: If you exceed your monthly data limit, T-Mobile may reduce your speeds until the next billing cycle. Check your plan details for specific thresholds.

  3. Video Streaming Quality: T-Mobile may limit video streaming quality on certain plans (e.g., SD quality) unless you have a plan that includes HD streaming.

  4. Network Management Policies: T-Mobile has policies in place to ensure fair usage among customers. This means that heavy data users may experience throttling during peak times.

  5. 5G vs. 4G LTE: If you are on a 5G plan, ensure you are in a 5G coverage area. If you fall back to 4G LTE, speeds may vary based on network congestion.

Takeaways:

  • Monitor Your Data Usage: Use the T-Mobile app to keep track of your data usage and avoid unexpected throttling.

  • Consider Upgrading Your Plan: If you frequently hit data limits, consider a plan with higher data allowances or unlimited options.

  • Contact Customer Support: If you believe your data is being throttled unfairly or if you have questions about your plan, reach out to T-Mobile customer support for clarification.

Recommendation: If you find that throttling is a consistent issue and affects your usage, consider switching to an unlimited plan or exploring options that prioritize data speeds during congestion. This can provide a more reliable experience, especially if you use data-intensive applications frequently.
