Understanding Data Throttling
Data throttling is a common practice among carriers to manage network traffic and ensure fair usage. Many users experience slower speeds after exceeding a certain data cap, even on "unlimited" plans [2:1]
[3:4]. This is often due to network congestion or prioritization policies that reduce speeds for high data users
[4:1].
Using VPNs
One potential solution to bypass throttling is using a VPN. A VPN can mask your internet activity, making it harder for carriers to identify specific types of data to throttle [3:1]. However, this method may only be effective if you're within your data cap, as throttling beyond the cap is typically enforced at the server level
[3:2].
Alternative Plans and Hotspots
Consider purchasing a hotspot device with a separate data plan dedicated to tethering [2:1]. Some carriers offer business plans with higher data caps or priority data, which might be more suitable for heavy data users
[3:8]. Exploring different carrier options or plans specifically designed for high data usage could also help mitigate throttling issues.
Apps and Tweaks
For Android users, apps like PdaNet+ have been mentioned as possible solutions to improve tethering speeds [3:5]. Additionally, TetherMe has been suggested for iOS devices
[3:7]. These apps may help circumvent some restrictions imposed by carriers, although their effectiveness can vary depending on the carrier's policies.
Carrier Communication and Plan Adjustments
If throttling persists, contacting your carrier to discuss alternative plans or options could be beneficial [3:4]. Some users have reported success in negotiating better terms or finding plans that suit their needs more closely
[5:3]. It's important to thoroughly read the terms of service to understand any limitations or conditions related to data usage
[4:4].
In conclusion, while completely stopping data throttling may not be feasible due to carrier policies, employing strategies such as using a VPN, exploring alternative plans, utilizing specific apps, and communicating with your carrier can help alleviate some of the issues associated with throttled data speeds.
Does anybody know how to bypass data throttling (on behalf of the carrier) when using USB tethering? It seems this is a standard practice among cell phone companies to throttle the shit out of your internet speed while tethering. I have enough internet speed to play a 720p/1080p video (usually) just using my phone regularly but when USB tethering I'm reduced to 350 KB/sec, which is NOT a usuable internet speed for literally anything. I thought I found a solution in an app called NetBridge, but it doesn't work under the conditions that I'm operating in. I'm specifically using USB tethering from my phone to my PC. This app creates a hotspot that is supposed to mask your internet activity/connections (something along those lines), but you apparently can only connect to this network wirelessly. My PC doesn't have a wireless adapter. I have my phone, my PC, and a USB cable. So that's what I'm working with. Does anybody know of any other app similar to the one I described that can perform a similar function with the goal of bypassing the throttling, taking into account my limited connectivity options? Thanks if anyone can help
What are you doing while tethered on the PC? You could try using a VPN if your goal is to mask your connections or whatever.
I'm just browsing the internet. Web pages, video streams, etc. I am using a VPN. Yesterday I signed into a location and was getting upwards of 8MB download speed. Today under the same conditions I'm throttled again to 350KB. Me getting that high speed has happened twice in the last month out of dozens of times of me doing this, and I have absolutely no idea why. The app I described in my post apparently is not the same thing as a VPN. I just figured there might be similar apps that work the same way that might also work under the conditions I'm constrained to.
Hi all, I run a small company with a few other folks, and we have a cell plan we all use. We work remotely and a couple of us don't have regular access to WiFi so we depend on tethering from our phones to do all of our work - videoconferencing, etc. The problem is, despite our carrier saying our plan has unlimited data, we get throttled when we use 20 GB/line and internet becomes unbearably slow. Is there any way to overcome this throttling? Are there plans where you can just buy by the amount of data and then we can have as much as we need? I know in other countries (we're in the US) it's possible, but all carriers seem to start throttling at around 20 GB, and it's about 60% of what we need to live our lives.

Does anyone know of a service or carrier that doesn't have these limitations?
I know personally T-Mobile has unlimited
The only throttling that I noticed was past the 45gb limit I got a warning hat if I exceeded 50gbsy speed would be downgraded to 128kbs
I'm almost positive all carriers have this. If data was truely unlimited without throttling then the carrier couldn't handle it. Try purchasing a hotspot from your carrier that is on a separate plan for separate data.
TetherMe plus a VPN works on Verizon iOS. Pdanet+ for newer Androids
I seen the tether me is that just for hotspot ?
Oh I see, you mean data throttling to the device itself. If you're talking about Netflix YouTube etc, sites that the telecoms throttle by default then a VPN will work as long as your within your data cap.
If you're talking about top speeds while you're past your data cap, that's on the server side and not possible.
I have the best Verizon unlimited plan and live in North Dakota for work, never get throttled. As soon as I head home to Minneapolis though, if I'm over my cap then speeds slow way down, no way to stop that. Population density.
I’d love for this to be real, and there may be a way, but I’m not entirely sure it’s possible. But... I’d love to be wrong.
Perhaps a VPN so the carrier can’t distinguish which type of data to throttle?
I suppose it’s possible. It depends on how they throttle it. It may be based on the number or any other thing.
I have unlimited. I have they’re highest plan Get More unlimited. At 75gb they throttle the hell out of it. They say so in their terms. Told the same thing when I called to complain. Besides their 100gb business plan. They don’t offer anything else. I’m on the highest plan their is.
I’m in Pennsylvania. They give you 75 gb after that it’s crazy slow.
I called in to try and get more data plan options. They were happy to bump me up to 100gb plan for the great price of 800 dollars a month
I’ve got unlimited text, voice and data for $80 not sure what you have.
Well Idk what y’all bundled on but I got unlimited (average use of 60gb monthly) and pay $45. They are two numbers so total of $90 average use both together 150gb
Thank you for contacting MobileX, regarding to your concern, your account was throttled due to excessive usage. Sometimes this can happen when too much data is used in a short period of time. This is to ensure all of our customers have access to same available data. The throttle should be completely removed in your next subscription renew. If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to contact us back. Regards, XpertCare
Same thing happened to me. We get 199GB of priority data so I'm confused as to why I'm throttled severely....I have 147GB left....
u/paddertonMX
I’m thinking to be honest the cap is 50. So many posts about data being slowed at the 50 gig mark
That needs to be thoroughly stated in the TOS. This 199GB is a useless figure. You'll never even use 100GB with the throttle beginning at 50GB. Honestly, I'm disappointed. Yet another provider doing shady tactics. Just say Verizon will only let us use 50GB at max with a QCI that is the same as regular Verizon customers. How hard is that?
Which plan?
And throttled to what
Unlimited $24 plan throttled to 0.3Mbps
How much data did you use? Based on the screenshot its 20.28GB but I don't know if there was earlier data capturated. Also if that is all you used than this is no where close to be excesive. If it is it needs to be spelled out in there ToS
Could be some congestion as well, I'm in a rural area and upload speeds are often like that... but should not be happening because that is not what MobileX advertises And I don't use over 2 GB a month.
Yea but how many gigs did you use total this month?
So right around the 50 gig mark

Download maps on WiFi, set them to keep up to date.
My email is usually good as it checks in the background.
But yeah, they might as well say they cut you off, not throttle...
What plan are you using? All plans except unlimited data one will be drastically slowed once you run out the data.
You can go to next level plan like now and pay the prorated difference.
I used to be on unlimited at $45 a month but recently switched to 15 gig to try to save money since I only do a 3 month plan. Guess I gotta go back to unlimited. The throttling drives me nuts tho.
Ok. If coverage and speed are both good in your areas then consider the 12 months unlimited for $360 for saving money in the long run.
The 3 month pricing for renewing customers is meh. If you get good service, go with the 12 month plan and save yourself a chunk of money.
When I run out of data I can still check my email pretty easily. I can even play YouTube videos but only with the screen off. Reddit or basically any web browsing is a no-go.
You get what you pay for kinda deal with Mint. I get hammered by deprioritation almost everywhere I travel. Full bars but shit connection speed. Been like this for 7 years now. Too stubborn to leave lmao.
It’s a different scenario than unlimited data customers get hit with deprioritized network speed. OP ran out of data 2 days before new cycle starts. He or she is not on unlimited data plan. Once data runs out the speed is like dial up modem days from the 90s

How did you determine that you are being throttled ?
probably by going to fast.com
it's a speed test based on Netflix's servers. this enables you to see if Video traffic is throttled. SPeedtest.net is not throttled, so won't be accurate for Video throttling.
Yeah the video throttling has been discussed on here ad infinitum. Yawn.
It’s a new feature actually. They don’t want you to use up all the data that you paid for so they are throttling videos (but sometimes end up throttling other applications too)
Vee pee n
You can go into the web dashboard and disable it. They said it will probably become a paid feature.
No disabled, it just raised the limit on the throttle.
Welcome to the party 1 percenter!
If you're on GSM, it could just be that your data is being deprioritized. GSM data is prioritized for every plan on US mobile and there's nothing that can be done about it. Regardless, if this is about video streaming, "Data Waster Mode" is supposed to combat this. But I believe they have been throttling for a long time and only just increased the throttling rather than it being a new addition.
Hi! I was wondering how to stop data throttling on an 'Unlimited' plan. Once I hit 50GB they slow me down, and I've tried using different VPNs but none of them have worked. Please help! (Android)
VPN can disguise the traffic but not the amount of data. Also likely to throttle speeds to some degree compared to native connection.
Solution is a plan that does not throttle at 50GB or to use less than 50GB
Thats why I wanted to know because there is no uncapped plan on verizon. Thanks though
I had a similar problem trying to keep a household going with a mobile plan wi-fi hotspot a year or so ago.
After speaking to a few managers and explaining the shortterm nature of the issue they eventually agreed to give me actual unlimited for the rest of the current month and following month for a reasonable fee.
This was UK based, not verizon, and explicitly an 'oh shit!' shortterm issue.
Thats why I wanted to know, because there is no uncapped plan on Verizon. Thanks though.
Hindi ba mg throttle ang signal after downloading a big size file like a more than 100gb. ? Heavy user kasi ako and I need reliable portable internet that I can bring it everywehe. Mahilig kasi ako mag download ng movies and i also play arpg games. I tried other networks but mag throttle sya like 300mbps down to 5-10 mbps. I used D*** prepaid unlidata right now. Sadly mg throttle sya. I have read na 100gb lng per month in a billing cycle
Portable pocket wifi
dlink Dwr u2000, 5g pocket wifi with better CA sa 4g
Zte Mu5120/5002, may rj45 port pero medyo may kamahalan
Zte f50g, medyo need mo i modify since nag throttle pag nag init
I used zte f50 5g. What do you mean modify po?
sa fan lang naman, im using zte f50g also pero ang prob is nag throttle pag nag init, mostly pag madaming nakakonnec or heavy downloading, mostly kasi pag nag ddl ako ng dati mga 300gb-500gb+ a day nag throttle pag nag init even may cooler/fan sa likod, kaya nag DIY ako ng case sa Sintra Board
I’ve been trying to ask Smart about this but the agents could not provide an answer. For context, we currently do not have a broadband connection from Sky. I previously tried the Unli 5G flash sale promo for 7 days on my iPhone and it was great. The speeds were blazing fast (max 200 Mbps) and we were able to use and abuse it, totaling 300GB+ of usage for 7 days. Never experienced any throttling and I was able to download some big games from Steam with a consistent speed (of like 70Mbps).
Then I purchased the Unli 5G for 30 days on a new prepaid SIM and put on my Android phone. 5G signal was consistent and almost full bar but when I tried to download a game on Steam yesterday, the internet throttles down to no connection at all, then comes back after a minute or so. Signal is still the same btw.
It seems that there is throttling this time, like it’s preventing an abuse of usage just like in their older unli data promos for 4G. For that day btw, data consumption was around 30GB, although I read here that Unli 5G supposedly has a data cap of 100GB daily. Also, after 12am, that throttling was still in effect, so in short, there really is some sort of abuse protection I guess from Smart.
Personally what I figured is that most of these "unli" plans from SMART actually have throttling.
(Through their "fair use policy" - which to me, can easily be problematic that they advertise "unli" and then go, BuT thE fAiR uSe pOliCy)
Anyway, the cheaper the unli promo, the more likely and severe the throttling.
You can try some workarounds, like using a VPN.
If you want little to no throttling though, consider getting either the 30 day 999 or 1299 promo - depending on whether you'll use the sim in a phone or in a router
Edit: a few words
Pansin ko lang sa Unli Fam 1299 sa H153 ko, I'm getting 300mbps download but 2mbps upload on average. I also noticed the drop on upload speed previously nung naka MR600 ako after they introduced 5G in my area.
Meanwhile on my phone, nakaka 450mbps ako na download and 50mbps na upload with All Data 99
Oo, napapansin ko din yan minsan. Same sim same 1299 promo, parang naka lock sa 300mbps sa H155 router, pero sa phone umaabot ng 400mbps. Apparently multiple ang throttling rules nila depende sa promo, device at area/network congestion
Why is the upload speed disappointing across the board? 😭
Yan din pansin ko sa Smart lately. Nagsubscribe ako ng one day unli. Nung una consistent na 200 Mbps ang download speed. After siguro naka-30GB ako ng data usage, biglang bumagal to around 5 Mbps na lang, with high latency pa. In short, halos di na magamit.
Limited/Metered data plans are not throttled.
It's ironic because I chose smart wifi because they have the best speed and best signal in my area. Now that they're throttling their own speed, I no longer have any reason to stay with smart.
Lahat naman ng Unli data may speed cap unless you are using consumable data, kaya yung mga nagsasabing True Unlimited yung sa smart is either agent or di talaga gumagamit ng smart data.
There’s no such thing as truly unlimited internet.
For example, if you pay for a 10 Mbps package at 130,000, you might get a data cap of around 700 GB. Once you hit that limit, your speeds drop drastically, sometimes to unusable levels.
Telecom providers also monitor heavy users and may throttle bandwidth for activities like gaming or torrent downloads, even before reaching the cap.
However, if your usage is high only on weekends but remains low during weekdays, you might avoid throttling—as long as you stay within the provider’s set limits.
Meanwhile most providers start well until they get a lot of subscribers.
Are there any service providers that don’t throttle regardless of how you blast away your internet?
The challenge is whenever they start out as a means of attracting customers, they don't apply FUP's. but once they have captured the market, they impose it. And for the many that don't read the fine print, they barely notice or even know what FUP is and how it will affect them. As per now I've tried and tested Canal Box and it works great. Yes, you can blast away your internet regardless of how you use.
And if it doesn't work out for you, you can share your insight with us.
What is your monthly usage (if you happen to monitor)? Have you blown 5TB consecutively?
One of the reasons they put caps is issue of customers becoming "resellers" or "ISPs" via sharing. You can literally supply an entire mall assuming they have enoughbandwidth for your plan and not get speeds halved for each device connected.
Me believing I've blown through 5TB would be a stretch, at most like 2TB. I haven't been monitoring, usage but I'll setup a usage monitor. But it seems to keep up.
See the re-seller business is also sometimes murky water. On one hand when you ask the agents that sell to you (For this reason I assume they might not be qualified.), they mostly reply with "yea sure you can re-sell". But on the other hand, when you engage customer care (through media platforms) they claim it isn't supported. Also, when you read through, the FAQ and Terms & Conditions of use (for some ISP's) they clearly state that re-distribution & reseller are prohibited and is actionable.
It depends on the option you have chosen. I have realised that in Uganda people prefer the things that gives them hard time. Okitegera? You find someone on an outdoor trying to do reselling, another one is on zuku but relies heavily on streaming, another pays 60mbps at like 350k but has about 80 PCs, the other will pay for fibre but forget the router alone can't support the maximum level of work he wants!!
Then another person will heap on themselves dedicated and suffer since they thought private means the best.
And so many examples people using the wrong package and option for different usage. Now this makes the providers play along because business has to be in place regardless.
I say this because I work in Networking Solutions and it's crazy how people suffer.
What you need zuku 10mbps and 55+ channels if your main concern is gaming and streaming?
What you need 3mbps dedicated for if you are going to do social media marketing?
Why would you buy 60mbps @130k and expect it to serve a mall or the whole apartment?
TBH our providers do some good work. It's the market that is totally zigzag.
This is the stuff UCC should be looking into. UG does not have effective consumer protection
But this is done everywhere… in some countries where their UCC is strict, some consumers get legal notices especially if they notice you downloading or streaming illegal content
I use Zuku. It's way more expensive than the other telecoms. But I've never had a datacap. And I'm a power user that transfers lots of data. (About 60GB a day sometimes) And whenever my internet speed slows down, one phone call puts things back in order.
The downside is I pay about twice what other people pay for 60Mbps to get 40Mbps!!!
You are on fibre. It would be hard to do that on outdoor or indoor.
Oh, my bad. I thought we were talking about fibre.
By the way, NITA uganda is the best if your pocket is handsome. 😁Give them a try baba

how to stop data throttling
Key Considerations for Stopping Data Throttling
Identify Throttling: First, confirm if your internet service provider (ISP) is throttling your data. You can use speed test tools (like Ookla or Fast.com) to check if your speeds drop significantly during certain activities (like streaming or gaming).
Upgrade Your Plan: Sometimes, throttling occurs when you exceed your data cap. Consider upgrading to a plan with higher data limits or unlimited data if available.
Use a VPN: A Virtual Private Network (VPN) can help mask your internet activity from your ISP, potentially preventing them from throttling your connection based on usage patterns. However, choose a reputable VPN that offers good speed and reliability.
Change DNS Settings: Switching to a faster DNS service (like Google DNS or Cloudflare) can sometimes improve your connection speed and reduce throttling.
Limit Background Usage: Ensure that no background applications are using bandwidth. Close unnecessary apps and devices that may be consuming data.
Contact Your ISP: If you suspect throttling, reach out to your ISP for clarification. Sometimes, they may offer solutions or adjustments to your service.
Recommendation: Using a VPN is often the most effective immediate solution to prevent throttling, especially if you frequently stream or game. Just ensure you choose a high-quality VPN service to avoid any additional speed loss.
