There used to be a default setting for "send original quality" in Android (iOS didn't have it as far as I'm aware). Such an easy implementation that once enabled, you didn't have to worry about it anymore.

Some app updates really baffle me at how backwards they are.

Awesome! Being unable to send photos as they are on my phone over the internet has been a major painpoint for me years.

What people actually don't understand is that we've been able to send full size medias for years on WhatsApp (while it's still compressed on iMessage FYI).

Actually iMessage compresses the pictures as well, don't know what you are on about haha :p

You could always send them in full resolution in whatsapp or telegram.

Given the number of forwarded photos and videos I receive, I'd not want to clog any storage with previews.

I mean it is temporarily copying data over because they have to keep WhatsApp private (i.e. not like FB messenger which does not require a phone to be connected because all that data is saved in FB's servers), so not sure why you're so pissed about that.

Secondly, it is backwards about photos because a vast majority of people don't care about the picture quality that much. That's why the 2-3 billion people using it largely don't complain about it. Some of them also realise that sending and receiving high quality data will fill up their storage faster, so those folks stay put with the default.

You are shouting in the void here. No one from whatsapp or meta team is here. Even it they are, they don't care about this. They are busy with other pointless features.

Telegram has an option if it gets compressed or not.

(1) Send it as a document -- they don't get compressed

(2) Upload it to dropbox / drive / google photos etc, and send the link over

Send it as a document. You will get it in full resolution.

On my version of whatsapp, when I'm about to send the video or photo, on the preview screen ( the one where you can make edits to the video or photo) there's an HD option. This will send the media at higher resolution

Attach it as a document. Now that WhatsApp's attachment limit is no longer 100 MB, but is now 2 GB, you can send almost anything in highest quality.

WhatsApp compresses media, you'll need to send it as a document to avoid....

Use Telegram.

Quick share is the most convenient way at the moment.

Can we make it default ? Every time we need to select HD option ?

Still beats the workaround of zipping photos before sending. But such as hassle if you want save multiple photos having to open each one and then the share sheet.

It's funny, android tablets have an app, and it's not even just the mobile version, it has some specific enhancements for a larger screen, but there's still no ipad app yet. Usually it's apple devices that get the better treatment.

This used to be a thing the whole time. This is what I did when trying to send pictures to my friends without losing quality. This or through e-mail.

Use documents option in attach button in the chat window to browse to the pics and send OG quality

The problem is that you want others to sent them hires to you. People who like hires images themselves use decent options to sent them. Like iMessage or an iCloud link. Or regular mail.

It saves photo in files app as A-WhatsApp. Converts if it’s not JPEG (if it’s HIEC)

Then opens WhatsApp app. From there have to select add files.

And it deletes that files when opening shortcuts again. After sending.

The fact is I've 2 accounts, in main it's becoming image, in another parallel acc it's remaining as text… tell me 1st, is it a bug or not???

yeah at least we can know that the iphone user is seeing a nice full quality image... but why do the google messages users have to save it to their gallery to see the full quality image??

Yep. I've been saying this for a while.. there was and maybe still is a bug. That when you check "view details" of a sent image. It still shows compressed . But when you actually download the image on the receiver end. It's full resolution

If you have the send photos faster option then you don't have the new quality picker option. As far as I can tell. Turning off send photos faster sends all photos at original quality. At least it has been for all the pixels in my household.. I don't know if the new quality picker has made it out of beta yet.

I was about to say it was replaced with a new toggle named something like send images faster (which you need to toggle off for higher quality) but now I can't find that setting either. LOL, "progress"

It's gone missing for me too. I hate receiving a blurry thumbnail and waiting 20 seconds before it finishes downloading. I'd rather not see anything at all until it is fully delivered.

I still have the option but I have had it toggled off since I first started using GM
