How to Send Photos in Original Quality on WhatsApp

TL;DR To send photos in original quality on WhatsApp, attach them as documents instead of using the standard photo attachment option. This method bypasses the compression applied to media files.

Sending Photos as Documents

The most reliable way to send photos without losing quality on WhatsApp is by attaching them as documents. This method ensures that the images are sent in their full resolution and do not undergo any compression [1:1][4:1][5:3]. While this approach preserves image quality, it does come with a trade-off: you lose access to media-related features such as editing or previewing images before sending [1:1].

Limitations and Workarounds

WhatsApp's default settings compress photos and videos to save space and data, which can be problematic for users who prioritize image quality [2:1][5:6]. Although some users have reported an "HD" option available during the media preview stage, this feature is not universally available and may not always preserve the original quality [5:1][5:4]. As an alternative, consider using cloud services like Google Photos or OneDrive to share links to high-quality images [4:3][5:8].

Alternative Messaging Apps

For those open to using different platforms, Telegram is often recommended because it allows users to send uncompressed photos easily by selecting the option to send images as documents [2:8][5:10]. However, convincing friends and family to switch apps can be challenging [5:7].

Conclusion

While WhatsApp does not natively support sending photos in their original quality through its standard photo sharing feature, using the document attachment method provides a viable workaround. For users frequently needing to send high-quality images, considering alternative messaging apps or cloud storage solutions might offer more flexibility.

How did you change the quality. I'm on android, and the image quality settings are missing..

Attach it as document will give you original file. But whatsapp will treat it as document and you will lost media related feature like editing the picture before sending.

It will worth it though when say you took a precious family group photo and want to send over to everyone.

There used to be a default setting for "send original quality" in Android (iOS didn't have it as far as I'm aware). Such an easy implementation that once enabled, you didn't have to worry about it anymore.

Some app updates really baffle me at how backwards they are.

I understand why they might not want to "send original quality" by default, because it most likely contains EXIF data, but "HD" should definitely be turned on by default.

I wish Telegram did this. Remove the silly 2GB file size limit and just give normal uncompressed pics. Thats better than needing 2GB file sizes.

(And no, I dont wanna send pics as a file always. Nor do my friends who don't even know how to do that)

Telegram removed it about a year ago :( there use to be a HD button that stuck and would just send all your photos in full quality. I finally moved all my friends to telegram because WhatsApps "select as document" was to complicated for them when they didn't care about HQ, then TG basically did the same thing, at least you can just select it in the drop-down though and download from the dropdown menu like any standard photo

WhatsApp can do this because they don't have to store the media on their servers. Telegram doesn't eat up your device's storage and stores everything on their servers.

Given the number of forwarded photos and videos I receive, I'd not want to clog any storage with previews.

7 upvotes on reddit

I mean it is temporarily copying data over because they have to keep WhatsApp private (i.e. not like FB messenger which does not require a phone to be connected because all that data is saved in FB's servers), so not sure why you're so pissed about that.

Secondly, it is backwards about photos because a vast majority of people don't care about the picture quality that much. That's why the 2-3 billion people using it largely don't complain about it. Some of them also realise that sending and receiving high quality data will fill up their storage faster, so those folks stay put with the default.

Option to send Original Quality Images?

Posted by Chait_Project · in r/whatsapp · 3 months ago

Please add an option to send Images and Videos as Original Quality. Now that most of the people have 128GB-256GB storage or more. The option of send as original quality can be added along with Standard Quality and HD Quality. If someone doesn't want to download then they can keep auto download OFF for that chat. Send as document helps but not too much as the thumbnail of the image is not seen and we have to open each and every file to see what image it is. Little Huge Process.

Whatsapp video quality

Recent convert from iphone here. Sent a video to my wife using Whatsapp and the quality is so bad. I was under the impression that Whatsapp was going to be a good substitute to iMessage to send media.

Am I missing something? I tried to look for media upload quality options but I don't see them in the settings.

WhatsApp send photos as documents at full resolution

Posted by Mikuka_G · in r/shortcuts · 5 years ago

Would be great to be able to send photos at their full resolution (when sent as photos WhatsApp compression reduces the quality too much). It can be done by saving photos to a folder and then sending the photo as a document but it is cumbersome and an automation would be great.

It saves photo in files app as A-WhatsApp. Converts if it’s not JPEG (if it’s HIEC)

Then opens WhatsApp app. From there have to select add files.

And it deletes that files when opening shortcuts again. After sending.

My Whatsapp Text Status Updates are getting sent as images instead of... Text?

Posted by mreggman6000 · in r/whatsapp · 3 months ago

So recently I just noticed that every time I make a text status it sends a picture instead, almost like I took a screenshot of the text and posted it as a status update. But I'm just directly sending a text status. Also like it's not even a good high quality screenshot, it's very compressed.

I could go around it by sending the text somewhere and then forwarding it to My Status. But this means I can't change fonts or background color.

I don't see any of my other contacts with the same issue, they all post regular text status updates.

Did I accidentally change something?

Did I get randomly chosen for a random feature trial??? Honestly, if this is an actual planned feature, I have no idea what the point is... It can't be space/data-saving, because a screenshot of a piece of text is always going to be bigger than the piece of text on it's own.

Photos actually ARE sent in original resolution

Posted by Busy_Load_6892 · in r/GoogleMessages · 7 months ago

Yes it's frustrating that, despite RCS supposedly fixing low quality images, images still get sent low quality. But based on my experimentation, this is actually a front-end issue, and the images are actually sending and being received in full resolution (assuming you have the pesky "Send photos faster" setting disabled).

Viewing a large photo in the Google Messages app shows them in grainy compressed form, but if you hit the download button and open the image in the Photos app, you will find that it is the original quality. This applies both between two Google Messages users and between a Google Messages user and an iMessage user. Again, assuming the "Send photos faster" option is turned off.

Here's an example image if you want to try it for yourself. The original resolution is 3587 x 2614. Please test it with a friend and if my claim is true, report this to the developers via the Send Feedback option.

how to send photos in original quality on whatsapp

To send photos in original quality on WhatsApp, follow these steps:

  1. Use Document Feature:

    • Open a chat in WhatsApp.
    • Tap on the attachment icon (paperclip) in the message input field.
    • Select "Document" instead of "Gallery."
    • Browse and select the photo(s) you want to send. This will allow you to send the image in its original quality.
  2. Compressing Images:

    • If you send images via the Gallery option, WhatsApp compresses them, reducing quality. Using the Document feature avoids this.
  3. File Format:

    • Ensure your images are in a supported format (like JPEG or PNG) for easy sharing.
  4. Limitations:

    • Keep in mind that WhatsApp has a file size limit of 100 MB for documents, so ensure your images are within this limit.

Takeaway: Using the Document feature is the best way to maintain the original quality of your photos when sending them on WhatsApp. This method preserves the resolution and detail, making it ideal for sharing high-quality images.
