TL;DR
Sending Videos as Documents
One effective method to preserve video quality when sending via WhatsApp is to attach the video as a document rather than as a media file. This bypasses WhatsApp's automatic compression, allowing the video to be sent in its original resolution and quality [1:2]
[2:4]. With WhatsApp's increased attachment limit of 2 GB, this option is feasible for most video sizes
[1:2].
Using Cloud Services
Another workaround is to use cloud services to share videos. By uploading your video to platforms like Google Photos or OneDrive, you can share a link with recipients, ensuring they receive the video in its original quality without any compression [1:6]
[4:2]. This method might be slightly less convenient but guarantees the highest quality.
HD Quality Option
Some users have reported an HD option available in WhatsApp that allows sending media at higher resolutions [1:1]
[3:4]. However, this feature is not universally available and may vary depending on app updates and user location
[1:4]. If available, using this feature can enhance video quality, though it still might not match the original resolution.
Compression Issues and Troubleshooting
WhatsApp compresses media to save bandwidth and server costs, which often results in significant quality loss [2:1]. Users experiencing distortion or glitches should check for app updates or consider alternative methods until WhatsApp resolves these issues
[3:2]
[5:2]. Additionally, enabling HD quality settings where possible may alleviate some problems
[3:4].
Alternative Messaging Apps
For those frequently frustrated by WhatsApp's compression, considering alternative messaging apps like Telegram, which might offer better media handling, could be beneficial [1:11]. While switching apps may require convincing friends and family to adopt a new platform, it could provide a more seamless experience for sharing high-quality media.
Recent convert from iphone here. Sent a video to my wife using Whatsapp and the quality is so bad. I was under the impression that Whatsapp was going to be a good substitute to iMessage to send media.
Am I missing something? I tried to look for media upload quality options but I don't see them in the settings.
Attach it as a document. Now that WhatsApp's attachment limit is no longer 100 MB, but is now 2 GB, you can send almost anything in highest quality.
WhatsApp compresses media, you'll need to send it as a document to avoid....
That sucks! I guess that is a good workaround in the meantime. I hope some day companies let us share our videos and photos without any type of compression.
The best workaround if you're sending heavy files would be to send a Google Photos or OneDrive link depending on which cloud platform you use to backup your pictures. It's definitely a bit more annoying though
You can send all your videos/photos at once with samsung link sharing if everything is under 5gb
On my version of whatsapp, when I'm about to send the video or photo, on the preview screen ( the one where you can make edits to the video or photo) there's an HD option. This will send the media at higher resolution
This feature isn't rolled out for everyone as yet. I had it two weeks ago then WhatsApp removed it🤦🏾♂️. I could send images at full 3000x4000 resolution.
Show screenshot of that please coz this awful whatsapp compression is getting on my nerves
HD button at the top. If you click that, will send pic at full resolution. Will also send vids in HD
Use Telegram.
The problem is. My friends already use WhatsApp so it is not fair to have them also download another app because of this issue. I would love to have a fix for this.
Quick share is the most convenient way at the moment.
So I'm making this video invite on premiere pro. When I export it, I set it 4k then change the frame size and then export it. It looks good even when I transfer it on my phone but as soon as I send it on WhatsApp the quality reduces by a lot. And it's not like this can't be fixed, I sent it to someone else via drive and they made some changes and got that fixed. I don't want to trouble them again and again when I have this issue. So I thought I'd ask if someone else knows how to fix this problem?

Also it is wanted as a video only not as a doc
You don’t. I think WhatsApp even compresses your 4K into 480p or something like that
I know, but when I asked someone to help me with it they were able to fix it. The issue is he is really busy and can't be reached till 29th😅😭
Oh really? I’ve never heard of that. Clients sometimes send me video files over WhatsApp and it was always horrible quality so if you figure it out, I’d love to hear how to disable this. Good luck!
Send it as a document not video
My client has asked it in the format of a video only. He doesn't want it as a doc
This is the only way you can receive it without compression. If he downloads the document it will save in the video format that you have encoded it in.
Why not just send a link to the video on a different platform.
WhatsApp compresses images and videos you send. There's nothing you can do about that. Think about it from their perspective: Unnecessarily large pictures and videos literally cost them money in terms of servers and bandwith.
I know it does 😭😭😭😭 But when this one uncle helped me with it, the video didn't compress as muchhh. Is he was free to teach me or help me with it again I would have asked him only but he's very busy
You already posted this on /r/videoediting - and it's probably most appropriate there (if you want it to be here, we suggest the "ask anything" weekly thread.
I removed it from there cause it said in the rules that you can't post regarding clients. It's for personal use. That is why I posted it here😅
So, like the title states, all of a sudden when sending videos through WhatsApp, they go all distorted like in the image.
If I record the video through WhatsApp and send it, it doesn't get distorted, but if I record it through my camera app and then send it through WhatsApp it gets distorted.
No issues with playback through the Gallery app and no distortion when sending through Facebook or email or other app.
I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, thought it might need a software update which didn't make a difference. Tried restarting the phone. Uninstalling and Reinstalling. Tried a clean Reinstall too but nothing seems to have worked. No app updates showing in Google Play. Seems like the problem is only WhatsApp related.
Anyone else had the same issue?
Images attached.
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra One UI Version: 7.0 Android Version: 15
It's just the ongoing media issues WhatsApp is having, you just have to wait until they fix it.
It is an issue other users have reported, don’t know if it’s dependent on who you’re sending it to - as in android to iPhone or android to android etc.
No doesn't matter if it's whether Android to Android or Android to IOS.
My girlfriends S24 Ultra is fine but she's running previous versions of One UI and Android to me.
Previous videos that sent fine through WhatsApp are also having issues but relieved somewhat that it isn't my phone with the problem and it's WhatsApp as everything else is fine.
Enabled HD Quality and upload once again. If you will have a new phone in the future the issue will be the same. They correct issues for this phone but the next new model will experience same issue
Thank you. This fixed it!
This is killing me. I record some awesome videos, but then when I send it to my family it goes like 360p. Is there a way around besides sending as a document (which makes the files goes 100mb+)?
Sending large files (or a huge bunch of photos) via whatsapp is one of the things that get under my skin and irritate me. Just send me a google photos link (or link from whatever app you are using to back up your photos and videos). Or create a shared album for the 3000 photos you took on vacation and share that album with me instead of sending me the 3000 photos by whatsapp.
Compress the video with x264 (veryslow preset), with a PC program such as Handbrake. Do not compress the audio. Once it's done, send it as a document. The file size is then near-perfect, and there is only a mild additional quality loss. You can also lower the crf to reduce the quality loss, but it should not be set to 0. Video compression (of any kind) basically works by playing video on an invisible screen and screen recording at a defined quality.
I just send a link to quick share whenever I want good quality.
This shit was annoying me too
Open Whatsapp, settings, storage and data, media upload quality.
The past week or so every video I send via WhatsApp, whether shot in app or sent via my own gallery, is very glitchy with the video jumping around like an old VHS for both me and recipients. Any troubleshooting I've found seems to only apply to video calling (and hasn't solved it), has anyone else had this issue and found a solution? Thanks!
My wife is having the same issue. They must have made some changes recently to the way videos are compressed and that's what's causing the problem.
Not sure what users are supposed to do until a fix is applied lol
So frustrating, weirdly my partner with the same phone isn't having the issue. Just have to wait it out for now I suppose!
Same here. s23u, probably a shitty WA update and a lot more shitty QA and degredation teams.
Mine is v2.25.9.78, please write your vers as well so we can pinpoint who needs to be fired
I'm having the same issue. Super frustrating 😤
same issue on my s25u
I am having the same issue today. Sending videos made on my camera itself. Once received. Video is glitchy for recipient. They sent it back, it is glitchy. Viewing original in gallery is fine. Pain in the bum. Everyone thinks its my s25u but I think its a whatsapp glitch
Hi, I am a Google Pixel 7 Pro user. I have problem of sharing videos through WhatsApp. When I shared videos with my friends, either via chat or story post, the quality of the videos would reduced so much. The video would be so grainy and white balance totally off, like from an 8 years old phone. This problem only happened when I shared videos, not photos.
The problem is with WhatsApp and you'll never get this changed. They compress the video (pictures also) so that it's small enough to send. Unfortunately it destroys quality. It affects all messaging services. The reason they won't change it is that it would costs them huge amounts of storage/data if everyone sent in full quality.
If you wanna send someone a full quality video you'll have to create a link via Google Photos and send it to your contact.
I get your point, but when I used my previous phone, Samsung galaxy S10 plus, the videos sent via WhatsApp were far more acceptable than now that I use a Pixel 7.
If you're recording a video for the specific purpose of sending it via WhatsApp then don't use 10-bit HDR. For some reason whatsapp totally destroys the video. I'd recommend 4K/30 or 4K/60 for that purpose. The videos should look normal after sending (but still compressed).
Yes
This happens especially when you record in HDR and transfer over Whatsapp
It looks really bad. Don't use HDR if you are going to send over Whatsapp
I haven't tried yet, but I will.
Yes, we have discovered that Whatsapp sucks.
That is all.
Apparently Messenger has the same issue.
Share it using document button. You can send any file when selecting document
I noticed the same issue with WhatsApp on my P7. I recently sent a 3 second video and WhatsApp made the colors in the video look extremely faded.
If you don't want to share a link for better quality videos, send the video to the recipient as a document. Sending it as a document will send the full quality video without any compression/reduction in quality.
Yes, faded that's the right word. Thanks, I will try sending it as a document.
It started happening when i got my new phone. Basically any video will become hours long and corrupted after i sent it, even tho the video is only 10 seconds long. I doubt it's the phone's problem cuz other apps r totally fine with sending videos.
The format of the videos is mp4, h264 coded. ive tried reinstalled whatsapp, didnt work plus all my gc showed i was added, really embarrassing.
My old phone works perfectly, i thought it's due to the latest update but it wasnt as i also update whatsapp on my old phone and it was fine.
I would really appreciate for ur help of any kind, whatsapp official support did not support at all.
SIX HOURS!? WHAT
The video is basically corrupted
hmmm maybe..well i am not sure what to do
Recently, I cannot send a every single video on Whatsapp due to size file format video even thought the video i want to send is nothing wrong with it. I try to take a video from my phone and when i try to send it to wjatsapp statue or my contact , it said the same error about the size format video . I check my whatsapp and my phone , it the lastest update. I even restart my phone too . Anyone have this similar problem? What should i do ?
what's the video format, MP4 or??
Please check the type of file is it .dat .divx mp4 mov wmv avi mkv
Hi all,
When I capture a video in regular mode and upload it to WhatsApp status, the quality gets pixelated. However, the quality remains good when I upload the same video to Instagram. Has anyone else experienced this issue?
I think it's an issue with whatsapp. It's the same for me.
If there Any solution like video settings etc?
Any advise on how to fix the distortion when sending videos on WhatsApp?
The partners phone started doing this yesterday, video is perfectly fine on the phone and when sent through other platforms, but when sent on WhatsApp it's zoomed in and the right side is pixilated. Have already tried restarting the phone and redownloading the app
Same issues happened on my Redmi Note 13. Think this is on WhatsApp end.
Send it as HD, it will go without distortion.
How do you do that?
I have exact same issue, samsung s24fe... started to occur around 3 or 4 days ago. Uninstall app, reinstalled cleared cache etc... still occurring
It stopped doing it to her phone after a couple of days. No idea what happened but it seemed to fix itself
Maybe a WhatsApp update broke it and a new update fixed it.
Same here on xiaomi mi14t. Anyone found the solution to the problem?
My wife just started to have this issue too. She's using a Samsung A35
